Some Cultural Context Lost in Translation - Part III
When the writers love making old Turkish movie references via Doruk...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From Episode 44)
"It must be a cat."
This line is from an old Turkish movie called "Aslan Bacanak" (1977) In the movie the male lead was afraid of the female lead's brother hence he always met the female lead secretly by walking on the rooftops of the houses without being seen but ended up creating a little bit ruckus for the residents.
In time this line became very popular. For example if there is a noise and a person is worried about where that noise comes from (like it may be a burglar, your house may be crashing down etc) the other person who hides something and knows very well the source of the noise, can use this as a famous lie.
So Nebahat was about to look at outside of the house because she saw a shadow and thought it might be a cat but Doruk immediately said "yeah it must be a cat." to prevent her from going outside.
So that's why it suited perfectly. Because Asiye was shy about his mother in that situation.
However this line gained one more subtle daring meaning after Aşk-ı Memnu 2008 Tv Adaptation.
While Behlül and Bihter were making love in the greenhouse they heard a noise from outside. They stopped immediately, got panicked. Behlül tried to reassure Bihter by saying "it might be a cat."
And "the cat" became a symbol for the both representations: "innocent love" or "sexual intimacy".
Since Doruk is a 2000s child, I am not sure what he thought when he got caught and said this line. *whistling*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From Episode 44)
Kaan: "Professor, I can be the first one, if you want." Doruk: "Go on, little brother-in-law. Show yourself."
Little brother-in-law.
"Don't hold the little-brother-in-law back" is the actual line from an old Turkish movie called "Tosun Paşa" (1976) but in time people started using "little brother-in-law" part separetely.
Usually it refers to a person who tries to do some business that is beyond their capacity. So basically Doruk was referring Kaan's meddling in everything. It was the perfect situation for him to sass since this was their "my so-called brother who always betrays me" era and Kaan was everywhere where he shouldn't be in the very first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From Episode 36)
"This is our house with the pink shutters."
This is not a line but more like a symbol for the happy ending for the lovers. So in the most of old school Turkish movies lovers portrayed impossible love. I mean, cliche but pefrect formula. Rich woman & Poor man or vice versa, Sick Woman & Healthy Man or vice versa...These lovers had always dreams and these dreams mostly contained a house "with the pink shutters".
So Doruk, such a hopeless romantic, and as an old-school love representative in the viewers' eyes, painted a house like that and playfully said what it was when Asiye asked what he painted. Because to him, they will have their happy ending.
Old school isn't a bad thing, imo. When some things are done right, they turn into meaningful assets for the sake of story. You can choose these motifs for Asiye and Doruk because this is their main problem. Will they have a happy ending or not? Their theme is not about whether they will stop loving each other or not. Because I think we all know this is not even questionable anymore.
By the way when I started writing this post, I couldn't help but think that these actors could play period drama characters one day. Since Turkish drama industry broke the taboo that the partners wouldn't act together again, there is a probability that we can see that Onur & Yazgı will be co-stars again. That would be interesting.

How would you rank the castings of Aşk-ı Memnu characters in 1975 and 2008 series?
Right. The 1975 series:
1-Nihal. Couldn’ be better cast.
2-Bihter.Beautiful, youthful, can be mean.
3-Adnan
4-Behlül.
5-Firdevs
The 2008 series:
1-Matmazel. She perfectly captures the “nanny” archetype in this series.
2-Bihter. She may not fit the physique described in the book but She did portray a young, beautiful, ambitious and two faced woman very well.
3-Firdevs. The amazing acting aside, Her characterizatiom was closer to the book at the beginning of the series. She became too level-headed and mature towards the end.
4-Adnan. He is no sensitive gentleman.
4-Nihal. Again, she was closer to her book counterpart at the beginning of the series, and only in the childish aspect. She did not come across as fragile at all.
5-Behlül. His characterization is just not the same, except for being a womanizer.

Behlül çok çapkın, sorumsuz bir gençtir. Adnan Ziyagil'in dizide uzaktan akrabasıdır. Hayatını keyif üzerine kuran Behlül, "kolay lokma" olarak gördüğü kızların ardından Adnan Bey'in genç karısı Bihter'e âşık olunca hayatında köklü değişikliklere neden olur. Behlül Haznedar, Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil'in romantik drama türündeki Aşk-ı Memnu romanından uyarlanan 2008 yapımı aynı adlı televizyon dizisinin başrol karakteridir. Çapkınlığıyla tanınan Behlül dizide Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ tarafından canlandırılmıştır. Behlül Haznedar Kanalına Abone Olmak İçin 👉 #Behlül #Aşkımemnu #Kıvançtatlıtuğ

Leyla Hazal Kaya (born 1 October 1990) is a Turkish actress. She is best known for playing the role of Nihal Ziyagil in the TV series Aşk-ı Memnu, Feriha Sarrafoglu, Adını Feriha Koydum (2011–2012) and Filiz in Bizim Hikaye (inspired by the British TV show Shameless) (2017–2019).
Kaya started her acting career in 2006 with TV series Genco. She played the character of Özge (Gülay Erkaya). She had guest roles in fantasy series Acemi Cadı of Turkish version "Sabrina Teenage Witch", popular series Sıla, "Taşların Sırrı". In 2008, Kaya played Nihal Ziyagil in a modern-day adaptation of the novel Aşk-ı Memnu, written by Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil. She had her cinematic debut in Selçuk Aydemir's movie Çalgı Çengi in 2011. At the same time she took lessons from Ayla Algan in drama. She then joined Ümit Çırak Modern Acting Techniques Workshop and took acting lessons from Ümit Çırak himself. Kaya played in the first two seasons of the TV series Adını Feriha Koydum (2011) as the lead character, Feriha Sarrafoğlu. She played the role of a porter's daughter trapped between two lives and falls in love with the most popular student at her university, a rich and handsome boy "Emir Sarrafoğlu" (Çağatay Ulusoy). The series had one of the highest TV ratings in Turkey. Later, together with her mother Ayşegül Kaya, she appeared in the commercials for Bingo. In the late 2012, she left the cast of Adını Feriha Koydum and starred in a new series called Son Yaz Balkanlar 1912, portraying the character Emine. However, the series ended after a few episodes due to low ratings. She later appeared in the 2013 series A.Ş.K and played the character of Azra Özak, a tennis coach. That series also ended after 13 episodes. In 2015 she appeared in Maral: En Güzel Hikayem, opposite Aras Bulut İynemli. She played the leading character Maral Erdem. Her latest TV show is Bizim Hikaye (in English: Our Story), which is the Turkish adaptation of the American TV series Shameless. In this TV show Kaya plays "Filiz Elibol Aktan", opposite actor Burak Deniz. As of 2021, she shares the leading roles with Bugra Gulsoy and Ozan Dolunay in the TV series Misafir, an adaptation of the Japanese TV series Oasis. Since 2010, she appears as Behzat's dead daughter "Berna" in some episodes and film of hit crime series Behzat Ç.

Aşk-ı Memnu Yine: New York Sokaklarında Beren Saat ve Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ'u Görenlerin Trajikomik Yorumları
Aşk-ı Memnu Yine: New York Sokaklarında Beren Saat ve Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ’u Görenlerin Trajikomik Yorumları

After reading this post of mine, @zeldaxxi remarked on how it reminded her of Lindsay Ellis distinguishing between the protagonist of a story and whose story the story is. In Lindsay Ellis’s analysis of Disney’s Little Mermaid she remarks that Ariel is the protagonist but that it is King Triton’s story because he drives the plot. According to this metric, Nihal is the protagonist of Aşk-ı Memnu but it is Bihter’s story. I can agree with that.
But this association with The Little Mermaid caused me to think of how Nihal and The Little Mermaid had similar fates in adaptations.
In both cases the somber and melancholic protagonist of a painful 19th century story about growing up was turned into a horny teenage girl in a heteronormative love story in a commercial adaptation and that version of the character unfortunately became the version of the character in people’s minds due to the popularity of the commercial adaptation. In both cases I hated it.
As @princesssarisa once remarked, the Aşk-ı Memnu character who shares the most with The Little Mermaid is definitely Beşir. And I am of course not claiming that Ariel is as awful and shallow a character as the Nihal in Aşk-ı Memnu 2008. But it is still a similar case of a modern commercial adaptation ruining the poignancy and depth of a story and a character.

Can you do this fandom ask for Aşk-ı Memnu, both the book and the 2008 series? Would be interesting to see how the answers differ between the two.
Aşk-ı Memnu the 2008 series:
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): Bihter, DUH (lol) I love the 2008 version with a passion, not going to lie. She is so multifaceted, extremely beautiful and very troubled, and is ultimately in need of intense therapy.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Bülent. I want to squeeze his cheeks, especially in the first season. He is a cinnamon roll, I feel sorry for him. Also Bihter, when she is curled up against a sofa because she is So Sad.
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Elif. She is not the most important character but I like her anyway. And for some reason I like Arsen Hala as well.
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Beşir here as well. He may be annoying in the show but he is an intriguing character and I would like to write fics about him, actually.
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Firdevs. We all know she is problematic obviously, but she is extremely fun. I watch compilations of her laughter to have a good laugh myself lol.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Behlul, but not for the same reason as in the book. I actually don’t hate him in the show as well (sometimes I get really angry at his treatment of women) I just think it would be good for him to have some obstacles he has to overcome to become a better person.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): Adnan. Manipulative as heck, in all adaptations. He is a rapist here, as well. Just...grr, I can’t stand his certainty that no one can ever oppose him because he is Adnan, Rich And Noble By Birth And The Effing Ziyagil. I ship him with Hilmi, though.
