Imagine you're on a comedown, dragging a microphone across a sheet of ice listening to the sounds within and deciding whether they'd be good for music.
You hear two people approaching you and look up. They're militia officers, they're plain clothes militia officers which means they're detectives and have likely been at their jobs for as long as you've been alive.
The bigger one asks if you're cold and offers you his hat, when you say no he proceeds to have a screaming, crying meltdown about it and breaks down in sobs. His partner leads him to the side to have, I don't know, a pep talk and then they return.
The smaller officer then proceeds to *really badly* pretend to be addicted to amphetamines and tries to buy drugs off you. You tell him the drugs (that he used the full chemical name of, like a cop) he's asking after are old-fashioned and he seems perturbed when you tell him the sort of drugs kids take these days.
The bigger one then tells you he might be a homosexual.
The smaller one is wearing a revolutionary pilot's uniform for some reason.

YOU — “Hey, be honest with me. Do you *really* think you can turn this place into a dance club?”
ACELE — The girl looks at you for a long moment, mouth pressed into a thin line. Her pocket bulges with the tape recorder and contact mic.
Slowly, she casts her gaze around the church— its cracked ribs and crooked spine, the mound of snow piling in through the broken window like a scab over an open wound. Somewhere in the rafters is a maw threatening to swallow all of it.
SHIVERS — This place will not even survive the coming spring.
SHIVERS — AND YET.
ACELE — Her gaze continues around the chapel, taking in the lights and the dust motes tremoring to the thunderous beat. In one corner, Soona looks up from her work, her foot tapping along to the music. Opposite her, Noid and Tiago seat themselves on one of the church’s ribs, carving figures into the wood and talking in low voices. And in the center of it all, Andre is dancing, face flushed with exertion, arms flailing to the beat as Egg Head cheers him on. They pay no mind to the doom hanging over their heads.
Acele’s eyes linger on Egg Head’s beaming face for a moment before they return to you. She smiles wryly and shrugs her shoulders.
“I don’t know. But it would be pretty cool, don’t you think?”
EMPATHY — She wants it so badly. It takes all of her courage just to dare to hope for it.
YOU — “…You were right.”
ACELE — “About what?”
YOU — “People are sweet.”
ACELE — Her smile widens. Above her head, in the rafters, a two millimeter hole in the world pauses its growth for an imperceptible moment.

Idk if this has been done before, and I certainly don't wanna put them against each other, but...
I know there are others I didn't include, but there wasn't enough space, so I picked the ones who have the most involvement in the story. I left out Dora because we never really get a chance to meet her as an actual individual. I also left out Cunoesse and Annette since they are children, but for the record I love Cunoesse with my entire soul and I would die a thousand deaths for her.
Here's part 2 in case you missed the reblog where I linked it
