I am too angry to sleep so I may as well post about this.
Alexander Darwall is a hedge fund manager who owns 4000 acres of Dartmoor. He has contested the right of the public to camp on his land. And he has won.
This has been portrayed in the media as a loss of the 'right to roam'. This is a stupid way to phrase it. We never had the right to roam. We have never had the right to wander and live on the land. The Romani people and travelling communities whose way of life is criminalised know this - but of course there isn't so much of a mention of the 'right to roam' until white middle class people think their children's dofe expedition might be threatened.
Anyway, I digress. Despite my badly-worded cynicism, this is a loss, and I am furious.
I am local. I have always lived in Devon, between the two moors. My dad knows the westcountry like the back of his hand. He and I could cross the county with our eyes closed. The tors and rivers and moorland raised me as much as he or my mum did.
And still, neither of us would claim Dartmoor as our own. Because it is not our land to claim.
But, as is the insurmountable self-centredness and inconceivably egotistical nature of the rich, Alexander Darwall visits the westcountry a couple times (as all rich people do, to recline in their seaside holiday cottage for the two weeks of the year that the ghost town they've driven all local people out of is actually populated, by other posh pricks, only to fuck off again and leave behind poverty and a decimated housing market), and decides that the local people can't be trusted with such beautiful land, and thinks he deserves to own it. And manage it.
Because of course the local peasants couldn't know anything about conservation. We don't have a connection to this land, oh no, nothing as strong as the connection between a rich man and the estate he can shoot pheasants on.
It makes my blood boil. The evil of it, the condescension. People like Alexander Darwell know nothing about the moor. It's not just about walking on it a few times: when you're local, you know it. You've seen it in all of its forms, all months and all seasons, you've seen it at its most beautiful and most ugly, you've endured its cold to stare at the stars, you know its history and you've followed its standing stones, walked silently and respectfully past its tombs and barrows, you've replanted trees and held the earth in your hands, you've counted the deer bolving, you've built the structures that will rewet the moorland and return its life, you've sampled the soil from the bottom of trenches and carefully replaced every layer to disturb it as little as possible, and you've sweated and ached to see all of these things and give all of this to the moor.
And still, the land is not yours to own! You can do all of this - I have done all of this - and still the land is not yours, and it is not mine.
And you can do none of this, and you should still have a right to access it. That is the point of our conservation efforts.
Conservation is the old men and women who I've planted trees with, the archaeologists I've uncovered my county's history with, my dad and his colleagues working on projects to protect the moor and the climate that is harmed by the loss of carbon-rich peat.
Conservation is not a hedge fund manager privatising the land for profit. It is not the mindless, evil promise of capital, that compels Alexander Darwall to build fences around Dartmoor and lock up his land. His land. I feel sick typing it.
Because ultimately, this was done for profit. There is contempt in it - Darwall has no respect for local people who aren't far-right politicians he can buy - but the main motivation is money. The national park will now give him money, money which should be spent on conservation projects but is now going into an evil millionaire's pocket, and the rich cunts who can't wait to butcher the pheasants and deer that should be existing wild, in naturally-sized populations, will give him money to shoot and hunt on his land and leave the carcasses there to rot.
I am angry. I am so, so angry.
I have every intent to camp on Darwall's land. I will break his locks and tear down his fences, and every local who can should do the same.
Dartmoor is no one's. But if it must belong to someone, it should belong to us, and not to him.

This has been coming. We risk a cultural shift taking place where the landowners kick us off the bits of land we're allowed on - again.

Once again I woke up yesterday morning with a fic idea in my head and once again the Bitch Muse said “Forget about your current WiP, we’re writing this!” (She is aptly named a Bitch Muse!)
Anyway, bit of background for this. Filthy rich hedgefund manager Alexander Darwall has used his wealth and privilege to get banned a decades old tradition of wild camping on the bit of Dartmoor he owns and the campaign groups Right to Roam and The Stars are for Everyone have decided to call on the spirit or god of Dartmoor, Old Crockern, to come to their aid in opposing Darwall. Bernie, who spent many happy camping trips on Dartmoor with her father, the late Colonel, and her older brothers, has decided to attend the ceremony to raise Old Crockern and Alex Dawson has come with her. The story opens with them signing in at a Dartmoor hotel, where a certain S Campbell is already staying.
“It’s not the best time of year for visiting,” the man observes.
“I said that!” exclaims the sulky brunette beside the blonde. “We could have gone somewhere warm.”
“Alex,” the blonde says in a quelling tone. “You know why I’m here.”
“Oh, yeah, to join in with the wild campers calling on ‘Old Crockern’.” It’s said in a sneering tone that makes the man raises his eyebrows and the blonde turn around sharply.
“Alex, if you don’t want to be here, you don’t have to stay. When I invited you and told you why I was coming you said you wanted to come and you promised that you’d respect the beliefs of those who are participating in the ceremony, even if you don’t share those beliefs. Have you changed your mind?”
“You know what? Yeah, I have. It’s ridiculous pagan rubbish that belongs in the Dark Ages, not the twenty first century.”
The blonde’s expression hardens. “Well, the door’s right over there,” she says, jerking her head towards it. “I’m sure you’re more than capable of making your own way back to London.” She turns her back firmly on the woman, who’s about a decade younger than her, and gives her attention back to the man at the desk.
“Thank you kindly, Ms Wolfe,” he says, half watching as the younger woman storms across the lobby and out of the doors.
Oh dear, that’s more than six sentences. What a shame!

Wild camping is allowed on Dartmoor again!
I can pack my guillotine away. This is such great win for the UK. Basically one wealthy land owner Alexander (Dick) Darwall decided to try to take away people's right to roam on Dartmoor. Dartmoor is the only place in England where you could camp without land owner permission so long as you left no trace.
The land owner tried to argue that because people were asleep that camping wasn't a recreational activity and therefore shouldn't be allowed. He tried to claim it was a conservation effort on dartmoor ( really he just wanted to be able to charge more for his holiday rentals and deer shooting. ) He won his case in court but thankfully this was appealed and the right to roam has been restored.

The right to wild camp has been lost in England. Where in Europe can you still pitch a tent?
Wild camping is now illegal everywhere in England and Wales. Dartmoor was the last place in England where wild camping was permitted, protected under the 1985 Dartmoor Commons Act. But Alexander Darwall – a hedge fund manager and the owner of a 1,619 hectare estate in Dartmoor – took the national park to court, arguing that the tent-pitchers had no legal authority. The court ruled in his…

The landowner, Alexander Darwall, who took Dartmoor national park to court to ban wild camping may be putting a rare beetle at risk by releasing pheasants next to an ecologically important woodland, against the advice of environmental experts. This is despite him having said he pushed for a ban in order to “improve conservation of the Dartmoor commons”.#improving #conservation Source : Guardian

Right to wild camp in England lost in Dartmoor court case | Access to green space#wild #camp #England #lost #Dartmoor #court #case #Access #green #space
The right to wild camp on Dartmoor has been overturned after a court case brought to the high court by a wealthy landowner. Dartmoor was the only place in England and Wales where there is a right to camp under the stars without seeking permission from the landowner. Alexander Darwall, a hedge fund manager and Dartmoor’s sixth largest landowner, brought the case against the national park, arguing…

My top 2 ‘growth’ investment trusts for 2018
Investment trusts are great vehicles for making money from the stock market, requiring minimal effort from investors and diversifying your money across multiple assets. For those looking to switch from one investment strategy to another in the New Year, the wide range of trusts can help you to quickly move into new areas as economic and market circumstances change.
Europe
There are many investment themes to look out for in 2018, and one that you have probably heard of on multiple occasions is the revival in European economic growth. 2017 was a euphoric year for most European economies, with the Eurozone’s economic growth rate even outstripping that of the United States. Looking ahead, a number of investment analysts reckon a continued recovery would help domestically exposed stocks in the region.
With this in mind, I believe the Jupiter European Opportunities Trust (LSE: JEO) is a fund to consider for investors looking to get more exposure to European equities. Alexander Darwall, who has managed the fund since November 2000, has proved himself to be an exceptional stock-picker, with the fund regularly delivering returns in excess of its investment trust peers.
Over the past five years, it has delivered a total net asset value (NAV) return of 119%, beating the peer average return of 99% and benchmark FTSE World Europe excluding-UK Index’s performance of 88%.
Fund manager Darwall takes into account economic and business trends to find stocks which offer good prospects for capital growth. Industrials dominate its portfolio, with a 35% sector weighting, and this is followed by consumer services (21.7%) and healthcare (21.7%).
Top holdings include Wirecard (14.7%), Relx (9.9%), Novo Nordisk (9.1%), Carnival (7.4%), and Amadeus IT Group (6.9%).
Mining
Another area worth taking a look at is the mining sector. There’s growing confidence that corporate investment will finally pick up this year, especially following strong global growth and recent US tax changes that create enhanced deductions for capital expenditures. An uptick in corporate investment, along with rising infrastructure spending, should enable commodity prices to make headway in 2018.
The BlackRock World Mining Trust (LSE: BRWM) offers investors a diversified play on the mining sector, with balanced exposure across all major sub-sectors of the mining sector. Although there are a number of diversified large-cap miners listed on London Stock Exchange, this fund also offers exposure to companies such as Canada’s First Quantum Minerals Ltd, Brazilian iron ore miner Vale and a large number of smaller players, giving investors much broader exposure to the market.
Another attraction is that shares in the investment trust trade at a big discount to its NAV. With the shares currently trading at a 14% discount to its NAV, prospective investors have the opportunity to pick up shares in a trust for less than the sum of its parts. They’re able able to buy a pound’s worth of its assets for just 86p, a big discount for a portfolio consisting mainly of some very liquid equity investments.
