Not having "Emotions" 感情 or "Emotions" 情: Germa 66/Vinsmokes
Analysing the 3 Vinsmoke boys, because Oda-sensei should know that things like disgust or anger are also "emotions", and Ichiji/Niji/Yonji all have displayed "emotions". Negative ones, but emotions all the same. So there might be something else going on.
In the raw, there is actually a difference in the exact words that they say the boys don't/shouldn't have. I feel that this is might be important, because that's the way kanji is. The nuance of the word usage can be different depending on the context.
When the Germa scientists say that Sanji should not have "emotions", the word they use is「感情」, which does mean all emotions for the most part (including things like anger, joy, etc).

However, Sora says don't take their "heart" 心 away. When you say someone is heartless, it doesn't mean that they have no "emotions", but they have no "pity" or "compassion".

Reiju also says that what is removed from them is just「情」, not 「感情」. 情 is emotion, but also specifically have the connotation of empathy, sympathy and compassion.

And lastly, from Sanji himself, calling his brothers "monsters with no blood or tears" 血も涙もない. This idiom means the same as "heartless" or "cold-blooded", meaning no mercy, no sympathy, no pity, no compassion. It does not mean "absolutely zero emotions", unless additional context specifies so.

My conclusion is that either Oda-sensei has been playing word games, or there's a slip-up in translation. The boys seems to actually do have emotions. What they don't have are empathy, sympathy, conscience, and fear. Just look at them casually throwing themselves off the roof, and laughing off their potential deaths.

The reason why they act so cruel might be because they have no innate conscience, so they just parrot and follow whatever Judge told them.

And, since Reiju said she was reprogrammed to always obey, I suspect there's a little bit of that in the other boys too. See Niji, freeze-stopping his kick mid-air because Judge says no:

What they do to Sanji is really horrible, but little kids brawl and beat up each other all the time. It's the adults who have to teach them "don't do that". Without anyone telling them no, and Judge even permitting it, of course Ichiji and the others act the way that they do.

I think there is the possibility that the boys might still have the ability to feel genuine affection inside them (since, you know, having affection for someone is honestly nothing to do with compassion or mercy). They just might not know what that feeling is, because they've never been taught to understand that.

This is why I say Ichiji and Niji are acting like particularly evil tsundere dumbasses. For all their horrible comments, they're clearly capable of feeling concern. Ichiji less obviously so than Niji, but same difference.
We'll wait and see, I guess, what exactly is the extent of the 情 that is missing from those three.

Oh boy, while this chapter doesn't have as much dialogue like the rest that I have to work on, I had some lines that gave me trouble, like you will see in the TL notes, so please look over them. Translation notes

Although it's trivial and I'll be going over something from an early chapter but hey, you'll see just how bad the English translation is, especially with the early volumes.
Some time ago I asked on Twitter if people recalled the nickname Kuro had for Sakuya, because I had the impression he had one for him in the early chapters, similar to how Kuro calls Misono "kisama-chan", which I translate as little bastard xD Kuro refers to Sakuya as 外ハネ "soto hane" which I translated simply as "curly hair", rather than "flipped hair" which is what you'll see if you google the term. I looked into the anime subs and it was translated as "side flare." I could have used that, but to quote Mahiru, "Simple is best" xD

The 2nd and 3rd panel are poorly translated, like the "grungy" joker part, Kuro just calls him "joker" and that's where he also calls him "soto hane. Oh boy but the last two lines in the 3rd panel are soo bad. What Kuro said originally was "I don't think little bastard and him would get along", to which Mahiru replies "Little bastard...you mean Misono?!" Yeah, so it's quite different. Okay, so let's move on to the other notes I have for this chapter.

Tsubaki's last line had me like "What?" Hopefully I haven't misunderstood it. So, Tsubaki uses the word 貯蔵庫 which means storehouse which sounds weird...The way it's written in Japanese, his line could also be translated as "Put away the "prototype" used for storage", but that doesn't make sense, right? Also, I can't say if it's singular or plural regarding the word prototype. I used the plural only because he said "siblings", cause I think it refers to them. So yeah, it's weird, what does he mean regarding storage? We'll have to see if it's brought up in other chapters.

While most of the characters' abilities have two different readings to them, in this case, the furigana reading which is the intended reading is actually used to show the pronunciation of the kanji.
Tanaka-sensei used different kanji with the same pronunciation to spell the words "shura" that is written as 修羅 and "sousou" (funeral) which is written as 葬送 Shura (or Asura), has been brought up before by Tsubaki, but with another meaning, such as fighting; carnage.
Tsubaki's ability in Japanese is written as 朱羅葬想
修=朱
送=想
So instead of the usual kanji 修羅葬送 (shura sousou) in this case, the first and 4th kanji were replaced like I showed above, both having the same pronunciation and you can't exactly get a translation for the words, so I will just breakdown each kanji to see what they represent.
The first kanji 朱 means "red; vermilion; cinnabar; scarlet". This one is probably used to make a reference to blood in my opinion.
The fourth kanji 想 means "thoughts, emotions, feelings".
So yeah, written like this 朱羅葬想 it can't be translated and the kanji that were used are most likely meant to be representative for Tsubaki. That's my opinion.
He also says the word 迎え (mukae) which means "meeting; greeting; welcome". I can't say how it relates to "shura sousou", but I thought that maybe his ability has styles? Perhaps the "welcome" is one style like from what we see, he makes some kind of barrier and when he's attacked, he vanishes and appears behind Kuro Maybe he has other fighting styles used for close combat.
Oh my God, like maybe it sounds dumb but I legit didn't know how else I could adapt what Kuro says about the counter-attack, because there were hardly any examples of how some of the words in Japanese were used, like one of them was from what I gathered, a term used in sports that translates as "take the field first" and another one basically meant ""going second" and there was another example that basically meant "going second", then there was another word that I only found in a single example...It was awful.

Cleaning the speech bubble was tough and I think it looks decent.
As you might have seen, I added this page again at the end of the chapter on Mangadex to show the other reading of the ability, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" because I couldn't add it because there wasn't enough space in the speech bubble. So, when I looked up the word, it was interesting that Wiedergänger share similarities to strigoi from my country's folklore. I think others might have brought this up regarding inner Kuro, but the fact that he uses a stake to pierce himself and uses it as a weapon that takes the form of the thing that was used to kill Kuro, a stake is used to kill a strigoi to keep them in their coffins.

Regarding inner Kuro's last line, the intended reading is "let's talk" but the other reading says "let's fight".
Also, he uses the verb 引きこもる "hikikomoru" and when you make it into a noun, you get hikikomori which is how Kuro is described. I had to chose a word that would fit both character's lines, because I couldn't have inner Kuro says "hey come on, don't be a shut-in", "or "don't seclude yourself from me", it would have sounded weird.
I think it's clever how Tanaka used that specific verb instead of just saying something like "Hey, don't stand so far away" So yeah, hopefully my insights were helpful :)

ES21 japanese volumes - part 1/??

Sooooo I recently got my hands on the complete Eyeshield 21 manga series in Japanese and as someone who's only ever read the story through fan-translations on dodgy websites online, I wanted to go through and "live" blog about it, so to speak. I thought it would be interesting to see the changes between the languages and where the fan-translations likely fail with mistranslations. (No shade btw, I think fan-translations are great both as a hobby and the fact that they're doing their work for free, but it's also a reality that the vast majority of fan-translators are amateurs, many of whom don't fluently speak the language they're translating, so there's bound to be mistakes!) Also, I wanna know what they're originally saying because I’m nosey <3
I know the official English translation by VIS is allegedly pretty decent, bar the toning down of some things (like Hiruma's language lol) so if you've had the chance to read the official version, feel free to chime in on differences with the fan-translation that I'll be referencing, or potential differences between the Japanese version too!
And finally, while I am half Japanese and grew up there, tragically my language skills are imperfect. I speak it, but my vocabulary isn't very robust, so I do look up the definitions for a lot of words and kanji, as well as more nuanced connotations or references that may go over my head. Bilingual problems <3 But again, it's good practice for me and I think it'll be kind of fun!

Right off the bat, this page. What it’s saying is essentially, “You better come out and play (in the) American Football match!” But because Japanese syntax is different from English, it’s structured like “American Football Match you better play!!” The translator was confused by the final line, because in Japanese a way to say ‘participating in a match’ is by using 出る which means to ‘go out’— sort of like ‘go out (into) the match’. Maybe a better option would have been ‘get the fuck out and play!!” or just “you better fucking play!!”. It still keeps the overall sentence structure which sounds awkward in English, but at least it gets the meaning across.
(I’m not gonna get into every little mistranslation btw, because that would take forever, but I felt that was a good way to explain how frequently there are little mistakes like this.)

Look at our boy <3 So as you know, we start our story with Sena Kobayakawa timidly seeing if he passed his high school entrance exam into Deimon High School, with his childhood friend/older sister figure, Mamori Anezaki lending moral support.

In the third panel, what Sena says is actually “I feel like I’ve been praised for the first time in 10 years—” (maybe they changed it because that was too pathetic 😭) Then in the fourth panel, what Mamori says is more along the lines of “And to think you were a total mess in math and English… It’s all thanks to Mamori-sensei!”
Also I want to point out that Mamori is a little cheekier in the first few chapters. Like obviously still kind and nurturing in personality (her name is literally ‘to protect’), but she teases Sena and feels more like an older sister than like, an overprotective mom lol. Miss that for her 😔
Then along comes our kind senpai to accost our clueless protag...

There’s no mistranslation, but I just wanted to mention that the way Hiruma talks in Japanese is so funny? Like in panel 1, he’s speaking with a dramatic affect, he sounds like some sort of npc in a jrpg giving the protag a quest. And then in panel 2, his ‘of course!’ is this shortened, slang version of the word that sounds almost cute and very modern after the previous line. Hiruma uses a lot of slang in general, though I can’t say if any of it is like, common or used by teenagers (of the time, anyway) or if it’s just Hiruma-isms.

I can’t believe Hiruma managed to physically emulate the experience of contracting some shady internet virus…..
Something that’s done with Hiruma’s dialogue a lot (it’s done w/ other characters too, but most often with Hiruma) is where there’ll be a word/term in kanji that means one thing and pronounced in a certain way, but then the furigana (so the phonetic pronounciation, basically) next to it says something different. Now, in some stories (like Berserk for my pals out there), this is used to create poignant, layered meanings in the text. In ES21 however, it’s mostly used for sports manga flavor. For example, in the above page in Hiruma’s spam fax message, he uses the word 作戦, which means tactics or strategy, and is pronounced: “sa - ku - se - nn” さ-く-せ-ん. But the furigana next to that word reads タクティクス which is quite literally just the English word ‘tactics’ spelled phonetically in Japanese lol (aka a loanword).
He does this A LOT, most frequently with sports terminology, where the kanji are pretty dense, technical terms, and the furigana a loanword version of the same meaning. (though now that I think about it, it might also be because while パワー (power) and スピード (speed) are frequently used and well known loanwords to the average Japanese person, タクティクス (tactics) might be more obscure, so the kanji is there to like, clarify the meaning? 🤔)
Also I love all the early 2000’s tech we see in the early chapters— flip phones and fax machines galore! Even within the later segments of the series, the flip phones start to magically get more advanced, but in my heart ES21 takes place in like, 2003. If they ever do a remake of the anime (which is unlikely to say the least) I’d want them to maintain the early 00’s vibes. It just wouldn’t be the same if everyone had smart phones.
Skipping ahead a few pages, I remember this bit never really made sense, but I got enough of the general gist that I kind of shrugged and moved along. But!! the translation is just making stuff up here?
So for context: it’s Sena’s first day at Deimon, and Mamori (who’s a grade above him) advises him to make proper friends this year, since he has a history of only ‘hanging out’ with shitty bullies who used him as an errand boy.

In the English translation, Sena seems to get a text from a mystery number, telling him to pay up for a bet we never saw happening. He goes to meet up with the texter, who we assume at this point is a previous aquaintence, since he had Sena's number? Maybe one of those bullies that Sena hung out with from middle school? They make Sena go and get them an unspecified thing, but because Sena ran there and back so quickly, they don't believe that Sena actually went, and is lying when he says they were sold out. They drag Sena to a small shed to beat him up, and in the last panel of the third page, Sena says that he's been their errand boy since kindergarden?
So for a number of years I was under the impression that the Ha-ha brothers knew Sena from before the series, even though that never seemed to come up in the rest of the story.
But in the original version, Sena is actually getting a text from Mamori-- which makes sense because it was established earlier that his cell phone is brand new and he only has Mamori's number in his contacts. Mamori's text says: "If someone tries to make you run their errands, tell them 'let's decide by rock-paper-scissors!'" Sena is understandably kind of embarrassed by this, and mutters to himself that he's not a kid anymore.
Then it cuts to Sena being picked on to be an errand boy lmao. Presumably this is because Sena just looks like an easy target to bullies, not because of any previous aquaintence rip. The blond bully tells Sena to go buy them bread (which might sound weird, but Japan has a lot of tasty snack breads that they sell everywhere). In panels 2+3 of the second page, Sena timidly tries to bring up the rock-paper-scissors thing, but is intimidated into giving up and just doing what he's told.
Again, they don't believe that Sena actually went all the way to the school store and back with how quick he was, so they decide to beat him up in the shed. As he's being dragged, Sena says, "It really was sold out! I've gotten used to being an errand boy since kindergarden, so I've just gotten fast--!"
So yeah, if there were any other people who've only read fan-translations and were confused by this bit, there you go.

*Ok soooo I don't fully understand what a shumu is lol, or how you'd translate it to English. The word itself apparently means 'person in charge' so? The fan-translation just calls it the manager, but based on something Hiruma says later, I get the impression that the shumu and the manager are technically different roles? But when Mamori becomes the manager later, she takes on a lot of what are allegedly 'shumu tasks', along with Hiruma, so idk. If anyone's read the official VIS translation, feel free to chime in on how they did it, because I'd be curious to know!
That being said, adorable of Sena to think he could have handled that responsiblity at all 😂 our boy has many talents, but being smart and organized is not among them.

The three bullies from before were waiting to get revenge. The dialogue is a bit different in the original. Juumonji (the blond one) actually says: "That fatso a friend of yours, Sena? Tell me his contact info-- if you do that, we'll let you go." To which Sena timidly and reluctantly agrees. Then Kuroki (the dark haired one) says: "But do you think one bat will be enough? With that brute strength..." In the final panel, Juumonji says: "It's better with just one, since we're gonna call the police beforehand." Togano (with the glasses): "The police?"

Juumonji: "As long as we get him wrapped up in the fight, it'll be fine. We'll say we got these wounds from being assaulted by the fatso with the bat -- We'll get him disqualified from the American Football tournament." One of the others: "Ooohh, smart!"
I guess the overall sentiment isn't that different, but knowing that the initial demand was for Sena to hand over Kurita's contact info with the promise that they would spare him if he obeyed-- and that at first he agreed-- makes his change of heart feel even more significant.

Tell 'em Sena!! A part of me sort of wishes the story maintained this serious story beat instead of undercutting it with humor in the next panel (not shown here) but at the same time, ES21 is overall a more lighthearted, comedic story which I love it for, so I don't think I'd like it getting too angsty. I'll always have Berserk in my corner if I want some actual angst lol.

Lol I do love the little details Murata included, like Kuroki taking a swing at Sena as he's biting Juumonji's hand but then totally missing in the fourth panel because Sena's so fast. Also I'm always on the lookout for the kinds of stuff Hiruma buys, snack wise. We know he loves sugarless gum, obv, and drinks coke based on that one time he bought some for himself, Kurita & Sena, but what else are in those bags? I want to know!!

Today, my nihongo no sensei asked me which was my "fave character" from Bleach. So, of course, I had to mention Byakuya. The thing is, that I've been learning kanji for some weeks now and even if I'm not expected to learn more than what she is giving us for N5 level, I really enjoy learning as many as I can. That includes N4 and N3 level ones (they aren't that hard, believe me). Therefore, I was able to write down Byakuya's name fully in Kanji: " 朽木白哉 ".
Now, because I'm a sucker for hidden meanings, we already know his name has a special (as Hisana does) one. The "Kuchi / 朽木" stands for "decay" and Ki/木 means "tree". As for his name, Byakuya/ 白哉 the combination forms "midnight sun" or "white light in the dark" or even "white night" (pretty abstract, but still beautiful and precise for his Hakuteiken technique/白帝剣).
Now, the little coincidence (it might be just a coincidence, believe me I'm just a beginner) I found is in the last kanji of his name : 哉. It is also used with the combination: 善哉 which both mean "well done" (pretty interesting if you think about Byakuya's obsession for perfection too) but also "Zenzai". Zenzai is a soup, that varies with every region. But in general is made of Azuki beans. And do you remember who wanted to cook Shiratama Zenzai for Byakuya in the "Honey Dish Rhapsody" novel? Yes, his beloved sister Rukia! 🥺💖

Blue mackerel Dazai
Have you ever wonder why Chuuya calls Dazai mackerel? It's mostly because real Nakahara did it but what if not only? And why writer Dazai was called like that? I started thinking about it since i first glanced at kanji 鯖 / saba — mackerel 🐟
Let's analyze kanji! It has two parts: 魚 / sakana / fish and 青 / ao / blue 。Pronunciation seriously attracts my attention because… hmm、look: saba — 'Samu — Osamu。And blue mackerel is 青い鯖。There is also another word: 青鯖 / aosaba、dictionary says it's archaism which also means mackerel。And aosaba is more similar to Osamu。

Headcanon: Dazai calls his partner by his name (not a surname) and Chuuya just a little changes name Osamu)
Unfortunately, godness know when did 青 run away from 鯖、anyway I guess two-kanji-word used to use in the first part of the last century。But what came first: the nickname or the alias?
Tsushima Shūji (the real name of writer、津島 修治) had used name Dazai Osamu (太宰 治) since 1933 when he published novel "The Train"。
We know about Dazai and Chuuya first meeting and "mackerel" from Dan Kazuo's book about Dazai「小説 太宰治」 (or not because I can't find it 😔 Does anybody have this book in English or Japanese? I would be grateful if I could read it in Russian, but it's just a good dream、it's not easier than found the Book from anime。I found only one little translated story from the book)
Also you can find Nakahara's quote about Dazai in Japanese Wikipedia:
「青鯖が空に浮かんだような顔をしやがって」 「Aosaba ga kuu ni ukanda youna kao wo shiyagatte」
青鯖 / aosaba means mackerel。空 / kuu is the sky、and 空に it's "in the sky"。 浮かんだ / うかんだ — past plain form of the verb 浮かぶ / ukabu、to float、to show up。 ような is the thing that we can use to express similarity、in this sentence similarity with 顔 / kao / face, facial expression。 やがる / yagaru is slang curse word indicated contempt, hatred、and やがって is て-form of this verb。し / shi is from verb する、to do。
Well, Chuuya said 「Damn it, bastard with face looking like mackerel floating in the sky」or something like this。

Yeah, got it! I really hoped there could be an idiom about mackerel but it still can be called a metaphor。In that situation it could mean 「Fucking idiot with your scared face」— Dan wrote Dazai seems like he could start cry that moment。And 'cause Kafka Asagiri-sensei often creates reverse version of lifecanon-people maybe port-mafia-Chuuya called Dazai mackerel not because Osamu was scared but because he liked to scary others。

how did you go about learning kanji? I mostly just take notes and forget about it 5 minutes later lol
Hi there!
This is what my learning process typically looks like:
1) I find vocabulary I want to learn, usually from anime or from something I'm reading or from a vocab quiz on Renshuu. I put the vocab I want to learn into an anki deck with kanji and furigana (which I colour code for pitch accent) and a sample sentence or two. 2) I review that vocabulary from time to time. I don't necessarily worry about learning the kanji; I worry about the pronunciation and how to use it more. If I learn to recognise the word from the kanji, great, but it's not my goal at this point. 3) I use flashcards to learn actual kanji. I use ones you can print out yourself from JLPT Sensei (if you subscribe to their patreon you can download all their flashcards and then unsubscribe again and it's only like $5 or something). I review a few most days, practising some of the words and tracing the strokes with my fingers. 4) I continue to review vocab on Anki, or I just see kanji out and about because I live in Japan and kanji is everywhere, or I see kanji in whatever it is I'm reading. I realise that, holy shit, I learned that kanji last night! And here it is out in the wild, with real context! 5) Being able to put two and two together helps to cement this knowledge into my brain. At that point, both the word and the kanji are locked into my brain pretty damn well. 6) Next time I come across that kanji, I'll be able to remember a word (or maybe even several words) that feature that kanji. I know how they're pronounced, and if the kanji has the same reading as at least one other word I know, I'll have no trouble remembering it (if it's different then it might take me a bit longer). If nothing else, I'll probably remember the meaning!
Also, I learn the radicals. It's advice everyone gives because it genuinely does make it easier. Firstly because instead of learning 10 strokes you only have to learn 3 parts, and your brain can store that information a lot more easily (especially if you make up a silly little mnemonic). Secondly because if you know radicals you can sometimes hazard a guess at a kanji's meaning.

let's study japanese by reading golden kamuy.
specifically, let's look at how noda-sensei added a bunch of lines to the scene where ogata hyakunosuke kills his father. i have included the pages in question here for your reference. he added quite a lot of dialogue. the anime goes by the volume version of the manga, so i believe most of these lines were spoken verbatim in the anime, but japanese is so full of homophones that it can be hard to learn new words just by listening. so let's read.
this is not the beginning of the scene, but this is where the dialogue additions begin. i wanted to make a post about this because EH scans never covered these lines-- at this point in the story, they were using magazine scans, not volume scans. as far as i know, only viz and various anime subs have translated this part. and i don't think viz did a very good job. so i wanted to put my translation out there for people who want to waste even more time thinking about ogata hyakunosuke and what he Really Said. but i'm not going to bother with a typeset version of just 5 pages. and i'm not going to go find this scene in the anime to compare the translation of the subs. and keep in mind that i'm a novice.
here are the lines in order, starting at the top of the first page. yes i really typed out and analyzed them one by one like this. (i typed them out so you can copy-paste the kanji to look them up if you want... i hate having to look up kanji radical by radical...) a slash indicates a split in a compound speech bubble. these slashes may or may not indicate the end of a sentence. (japanese uses punctuation sparsely and you have to kind of feel out where the sentence ends sometimes, so speech bubble breaks are worth noting.)
raw: 父上と本妻との間に生まれた息子さん��… / 花沢勇作少尉が��潔な人物だったことも証明している気がします phonetic: chichiue to honsai to no aida ni umareta musukosan...... / hanazawa yuusaku shoui ga kouketsu na jinbutsu datta to mo shoumei shiteiru ki ga shimasu my translation: The son that was born to you, father, and your real wife... I think the fact that Second Lieutenant Hanazawa Yuusaku was such a noble character is proof of that. viz's translation: That's why your legitimate son… / …second lieutenant Yusaku Hanazawa was such a principled individual. notes: when he says "proof of that," ogata is using yuusaku's virtue as evidence to back up the claim he just made that a child born to parents who love each other is blessed. also, this line wasn't an addition compared to the magazine version, but rather, it was changed. however, i lost track of the magazine version raw of this chapter for comparison.
raw: 入隊して初めて会いましたが / 面をくらいましたよ phonetic: nyuutai shite hajimete aimashita ga / men wo kuraimashita yo my translation: I met him for the first time when I enlisted, / and I was taken aback. viz's translation: I met him when I joined the military… / …and I was stunned. notes: it seems the usual way of phrasing "men wo kuraimashita" would be more like "menkurau" so the "wo" stuck in there confused me... anyway it means "taken aback" or "bewildered."
raw: 「規律がゆるみますから」と何度注意しても部下の俺を… / 「兄様」と呼ぶのです phonetic: [kiritsu ga yurumimasu kara] to nando chuui shitemo buka no ore wo... / [anisama] to yobu no desu my translation: Even though I warned him many times that it would "weaken his discipline," / he called me, his subordinate, "big brother." viz's translation: I warned him that it was bad for discipline… / …but he called me his big brother. notes: i think it's notable that ogata refers to himself as yuusaku's subordinate ("buka"). that was omitted by the viz translation, probably in the name of dumbing it down clarity. the fact that yuusaku outranked hyakunosuke is really important to the relationship between them. obviously it made hyakunosuke feel even worse about himself, but he hides that.
raw: 「ひとりっ子育ちでずっと兄弟が欲しかった」と / 俺にまとわり付くのです phonetic: [hitorikko sodachi de zutto kyoudai ga hoshikatta] to / ore ni matowaritsuku no desu my translation: He said, "I was raised an only child, so I always wanted a brother," / and he clung to me. viz's translation: He'd always wanted a brother… / …so he clung to me. notes: matowaritsuku, "to coil about; to follow about; to surround; to cling to." maybe this line was added just to be heartbreaking.
raw: あの屈託の無い笑顔…… phonetic: ano kuttaku no nai egao...... my translation: That carefree smile...... viz's translation: He had an honest smile. notes: kuttaku no nai means carefree, and it doesn't mean honest. don't make a mistranslation and then bold it. they bolded it! isn't that embarrassing? also they vaporized the powerful double ellipsis. lame.
raw: 「ああこれが両親から祝福されて生まれた子供なのだ……」と / 心底納得しました phonetic: [aa kore ga ryoushin kara shukufuku sarete umareta kodomo nanoda......] to / shinsoko nattoku shimashita my translation: "Ah, so this is a child who was blessed from birth by both parents……" / I accepted that deep in my heart. viz's translation: I realized deep inside that here was a child blessed with the love… / …of both parents. notes: nattoku "understanding; satisfaction (e.g. with an explanation); being convinced​." so seeing yuusaku's carefree smile and affectionate behavior, ogata took that as evidence affirming his theory about being born blessed; he accepted that yuusaku was blessed and took it to prove that he, by comparison, must not have been blessed.
raw: ところで / 花沢勇作少尉が二〇三高地でどうやって亡くなったか… // 父上は本当のことをご存じ無いはずだ phonetic: tokoro de / hanazawa yuusaku shoui ga nihyakusan kouchi de dou yatte nakunatta ka... // chichiue ha hontou no koto wo gozonji nai hazu da my translation: By the way... / About how Second Lieutenant Hanazawa Yuusaku really died at 203 Hill... // You probably don't know the truth of the matter. viz's translation: Do you want… / …to know the truth about how he died… // …on 203 Meter Hill? notes: here the // indicates that it was two separate speech bubbles, because even though i was giving each speech bubble its own entry, the viz translation combined two separate speech bubbles into one sentence! so i had to put them in one entry. anyway, it's plain to see how much viz dumbed it down... try to keep some of the sentence structure, maybe?
raw: 俺が後頭部を撃ち抜きました phonetic: ore ga koutoubu wo uchinukimashita my translation: I shot him through the back of the head. viz's translation: I plugged him in the back of the head. notes: listening to this line in the anime, i was chilled by how ogata conjugated the nasty verb "uchinuku" (to shoot through) with the polite verb ending "mashita." he's using mostly polite speech to speak to his father in this scene, despite everything. so that's one reason i don't like how viz used the nasty slang term "plugged" here. yes, both lines are nasty, but the politeness is what is striking.
raw: 少尉殿に対する妬みからじゃありません / 父上を苦しませたい…というのともちょっと違う / ただひとつ確かめてみたかった phonetic: shouidono ni taisuru sonemi kara ja arimasen / chichiue wo kurushimasetai... to iu no to mo chotto chigau / tada hitotsu tashikamete mitakatta my translation: It wasn't because I held any jealousy toward the second lieutenant. And it wasn't quite… that I wanted to make you suffer, father. There was just one thing I wanted to check. viz's translation: Not because I was jealous… / …or because I wanted to make you suffer. / I wanted to check something. notes: based on the way he said it, i think he did want to make his father suffer just a little. he said it was only chotto chigau.
raw: 勇作さんの戦死を聞いたとき… phonetic: yuusaku san no senshi wo kiita toki... my translation: When you heard about Yuusaku-san's death in battle... viz's translation: After you heard about his death in battle...
raw: 父上は俺を想ったのか.../ 無視し続けた妾の息子が急に愛おしくなったのではないかと... phonetic: chichiue ha ore wo omotta no ka... / mushi shitsuzuketa mekake no musuko ga kyuu ni itooshikunatta no de ha nai ka to... my translation: Did you think of me, father? / I thought you might suddenly come to love your long-ignored son of a mistress... viz's translation: …did you think of me? / Did you suddenly feel for the son you had ignored? notes: the phrase "itooshikunatta" is key here. it's from itooshii 愛おしい, "lovely; dear; beloved; darling; dearest," and the "natta" is "became." so it's along the lines of "suddenly became beloved" or "suddenly became dear to you." also he uses the past tense verb "omotta" (thought) but instead of the usual 思 kanji, he uses 想, which jisho.org says "has connotations of heart-felt."
raw: 祝福された道が俺にもあったのか… phonetic: shukufuku sareta michi ga ore ni mo atta no ka... my translation: Was there ever a blessed path for me, too? viz's translation: Was a blessed life ever even possible for me? notes: it's "path" in the metaphorical sense, as in the path you take in life. so translating it as a "blessed life" is acceptable here. and the "too" is probably referring to yuusaku, the blessed child.
now here is something worth noting. hanazawa's last words in this world were changed! well, you'd know if you watched the anime, but anyway, instead of the magazine version, "貴様の言うとおり,冷血で出来損ないの倅じゃ" (It is as you say; you are a cold-blooded and worthless son) it becomes as follows:
raw: 貴様の言うとおり何かが欠けた人間… / 出来損ないの倅じゃ // 呪われろ phonetic: kisama no iu toori nanika ga kaketa ningen... / dekisokonai no segare ja // norowarero my translation: It is as you say; you are missing something as a person… / You are a worthless son. // A curse upon you. viz's translation: You're right. You are missing something. / You're a rotten son… // …and I curse the day you were born! notes: the phrase "dekisokonai" is really cutting. it means, according to jisho.org, "failure; defective article; dead loss; botch​; good-for-nothing; worthless person; flop​." so "worthless" might be an understatement. what it doesn't mean is "rotten," but i digress. the phrase "reiketsu" (冷血, literally and figuratively "cold-blooded") was removed and replaced with the clause about missing something as a person. hanazawa's very last word, and this was added in the volume version as a new speech bubble, is literally "be cursed" (a command). i thought it could've used an exclamation point, but maybe hanazawa didn't have it in him.
the face that hyakunosuke makes immediately after his father's last words was also added in the volume version. what a treat!
i've been reading through the raws and analyzing them like this for a few weeks now. i mean i don't type them all up like this, but i do try to give the more interesting lines a deep read and try to learn a bunch of kanji while i'm at it. there's nothing like trying to read raw manga to make you feel like your 650-day duolingo streak is actually fuuucking worthless. so i'll make more translation notes posts in the future with some interesting lines that may have been translated strangely or incorrectly. specifically i might make a post similar to this one when i get to some more scenes about hyakunosuke and yuusaku (because i think lines were added in later scenes too) and his long talk with usami (where lines were also added). and maybe some scenes with tsukishima and koito. we'll see how long my hyperfixation lasts.
i guess i'll note that the phonetic transliteration of each line is based on my own arbitrary standards and not on any actual standard of writing out romaji (e.g. i tried to put spaces between words... mostly? i typed "wa" as "ha" when it's written with a "ha" hiragana, for no reason in particular... etc.). sorry if it's confusing.

I know that right now everyone is focused on chapter 104 😅 but I would like someone to explain me better about Hakujodai and the other one who also walks beside him (I don't remember the name). And also the ones that walk around Tsukasa, because now I'm confused if they're from Tsukasa or Sakura, because she can understand them. Please someone explain to me 😖
this is going to be a crazy long post. It's probably not what you wanted but it's what is going to commence.
Hanako's orbs are called Haku-joudai, and Tsukasa's are called Koku-joudai. Akane, and Teru, respectively, have referred to both orbs as "Tsueshiro" [杖代], which is a made-up word; unlike many words used in the manga, it does not have precedent in folklore, as far as I know. Both are holy in nature, unable to be harmed by Kou or Teru.
Now. the naming scheme, first off. It's insane and multilayered as Iro-sensei is about everything ever, there is significance in the kanji, in pronunciation, and Iro-sensei loves to fiddle wildly. Should be noted: It's not uncommon that some names and specific terms in JSHK use atypical readings. Whether or not a kanji is going to use the onyomi or kunyomi pronunciation is determined by things like, wanting to evoke other words as homophones, wordplay, etc… (In laymans terms, onyomi is the original Chinese pronunciation of kanji, while kunyomi is the pronunciation adaptioned to Japanese. Generally speaking, on is used in all-kanji words, and kun is typically in mixes of kanji/hiragana. But not always… aha. I have at least seen even natives struggle with some of Iro-sensei's decisions so I try to not feel too stupid about it.)
kun/on is kind of CONFUSING so I'll try to explain things in a simplified way... we are not professionals or scholars here.
I feel like it has to be included in all of this, even if we can hardly parse it.
白杖代 - hakujoudai / 白 - white (typically pronounced 'shiro', but in an all-kanji word, 'haku' is another pronunciation) As said, 杖代 is not a word, and I can't say which kanji definition is 'true' [though you can look at them here and here]. In all-kanji words the pronunciation would be "jou" and "dai".
黒杖代 - kokujoudai. / 黒 - black, (typically pronounced 'kuro' but in an all-kanji word, 'koku' is another pronunciation)
杖代 - tsueshiro - the incredible made-up word. It's using the pronunciations that would typically be used for words that AREN'T all kanji. but you can fudge it sometimes, which Iro-sensei does often , for words/names.
依代 - yorishiro - extant word. its NOT the same as 'Tsueshiro', but it shares the 'shiro' part. Worth thinking about.
The joudai are more or less "black joudai" and "white joudai", but Iro-sensei DID choose to name them distinctly.
黒白 connotates "black/white" in a "right/wrong" sense in some contexts. but it would be pronounced 'kuroshiro'....... Because Iro-sensei loves homophonous words, and homophonous words are frequently highly significant in character names, I will bother to mention that "kokuhaku", the combination of their names, black/white, is the word for 'confession' (not in kanji, but phonetically, or spoken aloud). Does this meaning anything? We do not know, Iro-sensei is insane.
Why do they both get pronounced 'Tsueshiro' and also 'Joudai' with the same kanji? Don't know.
Regardless of the unique name, their shape and candor is not without precedent.
In JP mythology, there are various sorts of orbs like this. Even in this manga, Yako has a more typical and decorative series of fire-balls about her. (probably 'kitsunebi' ?)

Nene-chan refers to Hanako's as "hitodama-chan", and "hitodama"[人魂] are, unlike simple little fireballs, the souls of the dead. You can read basic mythos about hitodama here! just ol' wiki why not...
Nene-chan is no authority, but it's interesting she calls them this, and not any of the other various terms for spirit-fire or what have you. Maybe they seem personable to her, or give off an air...
We don't know anything about them, really, but I can describe to you the little we can observe.
In boundaries, as mysteries are Gods of their own shrines, the Tsueshiro cannot be used.

After the Yorishiro blessing a Mystery with Godlike power is destroyed, the Tsueshiro can then be used again. The SECOND Yashiro peels Yako's Yorishiro, Hanako dons his Tsueshiro. He does not wear it in her boundary before this moment , as Yako could simply forbid it.

I believe the Tsueshiro are exclusive to Amane and Tsukasa; I think Tsukasa simply trusts Sakura/Natsuhiko to use them much more freely and order them, unlike Hanako. I wonder if Yashiro, if allowed, COULD be allowed to command Hanako's Tsueshiro, given that she is his kannagi?
One is a solid green 🟢 circle The other is an open ⭕circle with white in its middle.
The solid green 🟢 joudai is what Hanako appends to become a holy spirit, impervious to things like the exorcist's lightning. We never see him append ⭕. When in this form, he dons his cape, or manto (loanword 'mantle'), just a normal part of this old uniform style (his is just fancay).

however, when he hits the lights above Aoi, he uses ⭕. he also uses ⭕ to move Nene-chan's cart to the moon in No. 4's boundary.

Typically, the red ⭕ is used to guard, or scout. Hanako will have it tail Nene-chan, hide in her pocket, or stay behind to monitor a situation while he is away.

(but bare in mind that we didn't know Hanako could also use the sleep-spell, which Tsukasa uses on Nene-chan in vol 7, and Hanako doesn't show us SURPRISE!! he can use until vol. 10. It might be that the boys share everything... we don't know!)
Hanako also uses his 🟢 to pluck Nene-chan from Sumire's boundary, so...

You prolly meant this when I took one of Murata-sensei's tweets about Garou arc ending. And also one of my divine power theories I've lost somewhere in the archives...
BUT the depiction of Saitama's divine power is definitely that of the sun and he has quite many sun motifs to go around.
From his bald head reflecting the sun, sun shining from behind him, fists glowing golden, the clash of divine powers looking like the sun itself, standing atop a monsterized sun, sun symbols like reading manga...the list goes on.
He's the sun man and sun deity, through and through.

Well that is, if he Awakened (ascended) to the full use of his powers, his divine power to be precise that is fueled by his emotions. I still hypothesise that he doesn't particularly know exactly how it works. He punches something, it relieves him of his stressfull emotions and uh, yea.
That's it. He's like "I punch stuff and it works."
When he's talked to about his divine power, he does not consciously remember either. And pelted with rocks too as punishment.

Then there's ofc the japanese mythos of Amaterasu, the sun goddess and rest which are probably a good source of inspiration to draw from.
Now if you allow me to detour from Saitama himself a bit...
Cuz he's prolly not the only "sun god" in the mix.
Let's talk about some potential Sun lore, divine power and mythos in OPM. This be a long one.
The interesting bit comes from that we also have a direct Tsukuyomi reference in the manga now and Tsukuyomi stands as one of the the siblings to Amaterasu, as does Susanoo. So it is probably fairly definitive at this point that ONE has read the mythos and some of that has been used as source of inspiration.
Amaterasu is the great and glorious goddess of the sun. An embodiment of the rising sun and Japan itself, she is the queen of the kami and ruler of the universe. The Japanese Imperial Family claims to have descended from her, and this is what gives them the divine right to rule Japan.
She is the center of Shinto, and Japanese spiritual life. Amaterasu can be translated as “Shines from Heaven,” with 天 meaning “heaven” (or Imperial) and 照 meaning “shines.” Amaterasu is shorthand for Amaterasu-ōmikami, which can be represented in Kanji as 天照大神, 天照大御神, and 天照皇大神. This longer version means “the great and glorious kami who illuminates from Heaven.” The most prominent of her titles is Ōhirume-no-muchi-no-kami (大日孁貴神), meaning “the great sun of the kami.”
Amaterasu is the Queen of Heaven, the kami, and creation itself. Though she did not create the universe, she is the goddess of creation, a role she inherited from her father, Izanagi, who now defends the world from the land of the dead.
Amaterasu’s primary role is that of the sun goddess. In this position, she not only serves as the literal rising sun that illuminates all things, but also provides nourishment to all living creatures and marks the orderly movement of day into night.
The sun represents order and purity, two of Shinto’s most important concepts. All things in creation are ordered, from Amaterasu down to the denizens of Jigoku and other hells. This order is reflected in Japanese society as well.
Through Amaterasu’s illumination, she represents not just order, but the justice that maintains it as well. The Imperial family has long served as the legitimizing power of any Japanese political entity, and they have always used this position to ensure that Amaterasu’s place as Queen of Heaven and her control of its courts are reflected in their rule. Thus, the earthly court systems and the justice they represent are reflections of Amaterasu’s divine justice, though she herself is not the goddess of justice - merely its final arbiter. She maintains harmony and balance in both the natural world and human society.
Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto is the Japanese god of the moon, a proud deity of order and beauty. The estranged husband of the sun goddess Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi spends eternity chasing her across the sky.
Tsukuyomi, sometimes called Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (the great God Tsukuyomi), is rendered as 月読尊, or simply 月読 in Kanji. This name directly translates to “moon-reading,” a popular practice in the noble courts of pre-modern Japan where parties would stay up all night moon-gazing and reading poetry. An alternate Kanji reading is tsukuyo, moon-light, and mi, watching. Sometimes he is called Tsukuyomi Otoko (月讀壮士) or Tsukuhito Otoko (月人壮士), meaning “moon-reading man.”
Tsukuyomi is very much a match for his wife Amaterasu. Beautiful and serene, he believes in order and etiquette and enforces them whenever he can. His enforcement of such ideals extends to the point that he is willing to kill to maintain order, despite killing itself being a breach of etiquette in the heavenly court. Thus, there is irony in Tsukuyomi’s strict adherence to etiquette: to enforce it, he is willing to break it.
Tsukuyomi and his siblings Amaterasu and Susanoo were born of the purification ritual Izanagi underwent following his trials in Yomi.
Together, the siblings climbed the Heavenly Pillar and ruled the Heavens. Tsukuyomi married his sister Amaterasu, and ruled as her consort.
The Death of Uke Mochi When word reached Amaterasu, she was horrified and labeled her husband an evil kami, unworthy of returning to the Heavens. This separation of Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu was the origin of day and night. For all eternity, Tsukuyomi will continue to pursue Amaterasu across the night sky without ever reaching her; even during an eclipse, the sun will run from the moon.
Tsukuyomi lacked Amaterasu’s naturally glowing disposition. Whatever goodness he had was merely a reflection of her light.

And as we know, the Moon God is an obvious reference to OPM God who's body resides in the moon.

So what do they say about moonlight?
It only reflects the sunlight. Because moon does not produce light on it's own.
And there's been bunch of parallels between Saitama and OPM God already. One stands in the heavens and reflects the sunlight, the beauty of overwhelming power of the sun, light and moral good aspects and positivity and growth and want for living, while the other crawls from the ever-dark side of the moon where no sunlight reaches, the dark corners and only ever seems to even connect with individuals with dark thoughts in their minds, notably about killing or death of something.
(If he turned around it would be such a nice parallel to Saitama image above wouldn't it? Heh)

There is one other occasions with usage of monsterized sun as motif, like when Black S combines to platinum S and experiences sadness and grief on a deeper level, because he feels all those consciousness of other Black S fade in death and merge into new individual.

One could hypothesise then that OPM God gains power from darker, deeper, negative emotions of the psyche, these powers work as it's fuel and it takes advantage of these openings in the heart to wheedle it's influence over individuals. When the spirit is weakened and people give into these dark thoughts and emotions in times of duress. Like when HE tried to hang himself and Garou gave up after Saitama beat him, future Garou turned himself into salt statue and Garou tried to get other heroes to kill him.
Emotions like self-loathing, hatred of other individuals enough to produce killing intent, dark triadism, those kinds of stuff. Saitama himself has to prep a serious punch with enough killing intent to vaporize enemies like Elder centipede.

So you could say that if Saitama is the Sun god, then OPM God is the Moon God and the other side of the coin, the forces that make the Earth spin around, if you allow some philosophy.

Saitama is the protagonist of the story and OPM God is proposed to be the final villain. So yea, it kinda makes sense too. The beginning and the end of the Ouroboros.
(And you can't say OPM God prolly ain't kinda obsessed and/or linked with Saitama at this point, the Abominable fist that turned against God, like Tsukuyomi chases the sun god Amaterasu. It ain't easy being Saitama.)

Sun is basically a large ball of hot plasma, so their divine powers are similar too. HE basically throws large balls of hot plasmas at people (like vaccineman and choze), so its no wonder he was such a scary opponent and a hit would vaporize anybody in an instant.
Besides cutting it with sun blade, which seems symbolic if anything in a chapter titled "The greatest obstacle". There is both the sun blade and the moon blade, naturally, to reflect the dualistic aspects of divine power I am guessing. Sunlight is the source of all life on Earth, but ultraviolet can also break down DNA and the thermal energy is very destructive.
The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect ball of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core. The Sun radiates this energy mainly as light, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation, and is the most important source of energy for life on Earth.
I don't really see that much difference between Saitama's divine power of the sun or what Homeless Emperor uses and what gets forfeited from him and which then also kills him by burning him to crisp, besides the intent.

It's a sun, alright. Blast calls Garou's power "divine power" when he flares and glows with the power of Sun's corona (same look as in the cover page "Authenticity"), Saitama's copied power from Garou fuses with his own serious punch to create a ball of plasma in the sky and literal sun and Blast's friends wonder who's this person imbued with so much divine power.

It's all just some aspects of the power of the Sun.

And as it stands, OPM God also resides within a depiction of heaven, much like when Amai-mask imagined Saitama as a being of overwhelming power in 174 "Beauty". The first attack Garou also used was Nuclear fission, third attack was Gamma ray Burst and our Sun is classified a red dwarf star.
Nuclear fusion is the process that powers active or main-sequence stars and other high-magnitude stars, where large amounts of energy are released.
The interesting bit is that Garou could also use and copy Blast's and Saitama's powers and then figured out something as absurd as time travel on his own. With just the knowledge of the flow and behaviour of all the energies in the universe.
Idk maybe he just slapped everything he knew and had copied together and poof, time travel concept. *shrug*

Whether there is more to divine power itself, like divine power having the capacity of manipulating reality of the cosmos itself (space-time) or whether Saitama's divine power is still in it's infancy, like Garou who only got a small impartation of power or if Saitama bending reality of the known cosmos comes from somewhere else, like soul or some kind of combined effect like mind, body and soul... Hard to say.

I've thought this before, but I do think that one of the agendas, if OPM God is the chessmaster and the invisible hand, then it allowed Saitama to learn this ability from Garou who managed to figure out how to do it. He's a quick study and genious of techniques, so maybe he needed to be pushed to that point to actually develop such a technique and Garou was fond of combining other techniques into making his own.
So maybe the theory of Garou combining everything he knew into time travel concept holds some water then and it's not part of divine power in itself.
But Blast having space-time powers, so idk... need to know more.
I'm going to loan Rene descartes and the Pineal gland for a bit.
The pineal gland is a tiny organ in the center of the brain that played an important role in Descartes’ philosophy. He regarded it as the principal seat of the soul and the place in which all our thoughts are formed.
In Treatise of Man: In scholastic philosophy, these activities were explained by referring to the soul, but Descartes proudly pointed out that he did not have to invoke this notion: “it is not necessary to conceive of this machine as having any vegetative or sensitive soul or other principle of movement and life, apart from its blood and its spirits, which are agitated by the heat of the fire burning continuously in its heart—a fire which has the same nature as all the fires that occur in inanimate bodies”. The pineal gland played an important role in Descartes’ account because it was involved in sensation, imagination, memory and the causation of bodily movements.

As in perception, Descartes applied the term ‘idea’ again to the flow of animal spirits from the pineal gland: “And note that if we have an idea about moving a member, that idea—consisting of nothing but the way in which spirits flow from the gland—is the cause of the movement itself” (AT XI:181; Hall 1972, p. 92). Apart from the just-mentioned type of bodily motions, caused by motions of the pineal gland, there is also a second kind, namely reflexes. The pineal gland plays no role with respect to them. The passions of the soul: The solution of this puzzle is to be found in a passage which Descartes wrote a few years before the Passions, in which he compared the mind with the heaviness or gravity of a body: “I saw that the gravity, while remaining coextensive with the heavy body, could exercise all its force in any one part of the body; for if the body were hung from a rope attached to any part of it, it would still pull the rope down with all its force, just as if all the gravity existed in the part actually touching the rope instead of being scattered through the remaining parts. This is exactly the way in which I now understand the mind to be coextensive with the body—the whole mind in the whole body and the whole mind in any one of its parts” (Replies to the sixth set of objections to the Meditations, 1641, AT VII:441, CSM II:297). He added that he thought that our ideas about gravity are derived from our conception of the soul.
In this, ONE may have juxtaposed the idea of heavy conscience with passions of the soul from Rene Descartes and having powers of gravity at one's disposal, like Blast has. Kinda like how Mob walks with heavy steps when he's in ??? because of heavy conscience. The more the individual feels about matters, the more passionate the individual is, the more weight is put on their conscience.
If we glean from this that the more weight on individual's conscience, the more space-time powers they have then...and reality manipulation being space-time powers then it would mean Saitama's conscience might be...very fucking heavy. Since he too, is wounded healer archetype like Blast.
First episode in OPM, about thousand civilians died in one fell swoop because he could have just punched Beefcake immediately, but did not, because he had grown so apathetic his conscience had taken a hike.

The medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinasbelieved our conscience emerged from synderesis: the ‘spark of conscience’. He literally meant the human mind’s ability to understand the world in moral terms. Conscience was the process by which a person brought the principles of synderesis into a practical situation through our decisions.

Anyways, one other mythos from the aztects of their Sun god comes to mind when talking about sun gods.
OPM God is basically dead. It's incorporeal and it's body is inert in the moon. It only appears to people taking other forms and when enough divine power is present and only within their subconscious. Then it took HE's life and his power as his own. His temple underground looks reminiscent to aztec temples.
The rationale for Aztec human sacrifice was, first and foremost, a matter of survival. According to Aztec cosmology, the sun god Huitzilopochtli was waging a constant war against darkness, and if the darkness won, the world would end. The keep the sun moving across the sky and preserve their very lives, the Aztecs had to feed Huitzilopochtli with human hearts and blood.
Joe Rogan talks about how Aztecs burned people alive.
With this in mind...OPM God may stress out people first so when they finally die, it can digest the souls and they're more tasty this way but it would also give him their superhuman strenght and religious ecstacy of their souls.
If it feeds on the power of dark emotions, yea, it would probably give it more power with this kind of approach and feed into it's own cruel tendencies of manipulating people and watching them suffer and doing his bidding like slaves. Playing the evil, egotistical puppermaster.

That's why it's so goddamn large, it looks like a Preta path (hungry ghost) and why there's so many flowers of Lotus at it's feet. A pure, sacred flower. Might be all the souls it has nommed in it's quest to sustain itself in some way, since it's dead so it has no life energy and looks like death warmed over.
Kinda like Boros when boros got a taste of Saitama's serious punch, just shriveled up. Might be the reason it wants a living body as sacrifice to resurrect on earth.
This is a hypothesis though.

Whether it has some kind of agenda at play, like the Aztec sun god and keeping some kind of darkness at bay and morally justifying this action of empowering itself...that I cannot say. But there is that dark shape below inside the God's dimension that Saitama awoke which wants to destroy humans cuz humans are apparently a plague, so there is that.
Kinda hard to make humans your avatars if the other agenda is to create monsters to destroy them at the same time, huh? Misantrophy all the same.
Idk, maybe it tries to take the human souls to himself first so they don't end up as sacrificial lambs for the resurrection of evil god? Ends don't justify the means though. *shrug*

Seeing your scanlation efforts, even being 90% google-sensei and 10% intuition, is inspiring me to want to take the plunge and give a crack at translating the raws of my fave mangas which have (tragically) been dropped by their scanlation groups. If you don't mind me asking, what's your process for isolating and translating the text, what tools do you use, any tips and tricks, etc?
it's not efficient by any means, but i actually do know katakana and hiragana (and the manga i've been scanlating has furigana on all kanji) so i actually just set my keyboard to japanese ime and type what i read into google translate. if there's kanji that i can't pull up through this method (either by being a rare kanji, or one of those forced furigana readings) i use this site to look it up by its components (it also has one with hand-drawn inputs but you have to have at least a basic understanding of how things are written to use it), and in my brief explorations of manga that doesn't have furigana, while it is more arduous, you can repeat the same process on... all kanji
while i do say i use google translate (which i do), if i need a second opinion, i use deepl, which honestly usually provides a better translation, though sometimes, it instead simply provides a different translation. so, again, it's mostly useful as a second opinion if you're not clear on what something means. if neither result is as clear as you'd like, it's always worth googling to see if it's a japanese turn of phrase you've never heard of
ultimately, the most important aspect of the translating part, especially if you're like me and using machine translation, is not leaning too hard on a literal translation. if i just plug what google gives me into the word balloons, the result will be something like this

which, aside from sounding somewhat off (which is the main trip-up of machine translation), is also wrong; japanese doesn't explicitly state the subject/object of something most of the time. so google presumes the feelings he's conveying are hers instead of his, because it doesn't have context. that's where the 10% intuition comes in; it's your job to fill in the blanks and figure out those subjects/objects of the sentences that google can't. and it's also your job, as an english speaker, to tweak the final result into something real people say.
(one thing that helps with that is to have a "voice" you write the characters with; i usually write oscar very formally unless context clues suggest he's being informal, for example, because it's just how he is. finding that voice in each character helps you write their dialogue well in ways that reflect the original intent better than just a straight translation)
for cleaning/typesetting i use clip studio paint, mostly just because it's the tool i already use for my art. i've only done a tiny bit of redrawing because it's a pain in the ass, but if i were to do it more regularly then csp would definitely be the most useful tool for the job; it's my favorite art software i've ever used. but for the sake of just cleaning/typesetting, photoshop or gimp can fill much the same role. just make a new layer, cover as much text as you can without looking ugly with white, and then add the new text. if you want to get REALLY fancy, then look up tutorials from someone else, because i don't have the patience for proper cleaning/redrawing as a one-woman scan group
that's... pretty comprehensive for how i do it? when a new chapter releases, i grab the raws, read through them, translating page-by-page (i translate all lines on a page at once, sometimes even grabbing lines on the next page if i need more context to understand properly), typing it all up in a script as i go (i just split the script up by pages and who's speaking, relying on my memory of what goes in which balloon, but if you have a hard time tracking it it probably helps to put each balloon in a different line), and then, once i have the script ready, i clean and typeset each page at a time. and while i typeset, if there's anything i wasn't happy with in the script, or that doesn't fit where i need it to, this is where i put any final spin on it i need to. get through that, make a funny credits page, and bam. it's not what you might consider a proper scanlation, but if everyone's dropped the series, it's not hurting anyone to give it a shot

Do you have any tips for someone that is trying to learn a new language? (especifically Japanese)
Consume media!!!! Imo this goes well for any language, I personally find it impossible to pick up a language if I can't "surround myself" with it. It's best to read (books especially), but watching television is good for pronounciation and songs are great if you want to remember vocabulary and phrases as catchy songs will stick, and if you remember the translation you can go "Oh, yeah, that word/phrase is like that, I remember it from this song". It's the second best thing you can do short of spending time in the country where the language is spoken imo. I mostly watch tv programmes or vlogs, and play videogames both dubbed and subbed in my target language. Videogames are actually a great thing to focus on because they require you to know what's going on and being asked of you to progress - it's also how I learnt a bunch of English. Definitely check if you can play The Sims in your target language, I literally owe it most of what I now know in English, due to the genre it really offers a wide vocabulary.
Now, I don't know how qualified I am to give tips for learning languages, or for learning Japanese specifically, but here's basically how I went: first learn hiragana and katakana, then focus on grammar. I used the Genki textbooks, but when I need a refresher for certain grammatical rules I'll often google it and there are a lot of neat websites/blogs that offer grammar lessons. JLPT sensei sticks out to me as one I most often go to. Once you got most of the grammar down, you can start reading with a dictionary on hand - whether books or visual novels or manga. Jisho.org is a great online dictionary, and if you don't know how a kanji is read, you can "write" it in the search bar. There's a bonus point for manga, anyway, most I read in "raw" form also have the reading for kanji written in hiragana on the side, so it's a lot easier to look them up. I'd definitely suggest a dictionary that can let you input kanji by radicals or by handwriting, though I prefer handwriting simply because I get annoyed trying to find radicals in the charts lol. But learn radicals! It makes it a lot easier to memorise kanji if you can learn it not as one big piece, but a puzzle made of three smaller pieces (or however many radicals it's formed of). You can also learn kanji through flashcards - there are websites and blogs that teach you kanji through years/levels, at a specific order. Though, for me, I felt it more natural to learn them through media. It's a flawed system, but that's how I find it easier to remember and, besides, I'll sooner remember the more often used ones that way. Familiarise yourself with websites like hinative, too, though just googling "[phrase] meaning" (or "[phrase] 意味" if you don't mind the explanation in Japanese) will often give you links to blogs and forums with good answers, because sometimes even if you got the vocab and grammar down, you'll come across phrases that you simply won't be familiar with purely because you're not a native speaker. Stuff like idioms, and phrasal verbs (?)
Personally, I left kanji for last and that's why I'm illiterate lmao but basically, I feel like if you're not in a hurry (as in, if you're not gonna move to Japan any time soon or need to write some formal letters), you can learn them while strengthening your vocabulary after you learn enough grammar to be able to consume media mostly effortlessly, by which I mean, you'd only have to look up words you don't know - but when you do you can read the sentence again and know what's going on because you already know enough grammar that the only unknown in the equation is the meaning of a word, not the whole sentence. How do I explain it - if you see 食べなくちゃいけません you'll know the sentence is saying something must be done because of the verb's grammatical form - the only unknown would then be what 食べ(る) means. Though if you're gonna take my advice of consuming media, make sure you consume it consciously. If it's voiced, listen to what is being said and try to repeat the words you're unfamiliar with while looking them up. If there are translations online, read both the translations and listen/read the original text. Don't just consume it - make sure to make an effort to understand and to remember the new words and phrases you come across.
And also don't just look up a kanji's meaning, make sure to look up its readings in kun'yomi and on'yomi as that'll help you down the line.
Also a good youtube channel to use for vocab and culture is Comprehensible Japanese!! But asides from that, I can't remember if there's anything else that needs to be said. I would really suggest classes and/or textbooks at first, before the media, though, as I feel like media should help you enrich your vocabulary, while textbooks should teach you the core of the language. But, either way, good luck in your learning!!🤝

Okay, this got done faster than I assumed! Anon asked for the translations of pages 180-184 of the “Roll Book Time”, here you are. This was a fun way to procrastinate instead of doing stuff I should be doing. xD
This one needs a big disclaimer, though. I’m not good with slang expressions and the kind of colloquial language teenagers use. ^^; This was excellent practice though and I learned a lot, but I’m far from certain of every little thing. So if you spot mistakes, don’t hesitate to tell me. I want to know if I got something wrong. (The third one’s been translated before by ansatsu database, so that I was able to crosscheck. I decided to do it too, cause it connects to the second one.)
Also, I left the time stamps in the translations in those cases were they actually matter. ^~ The last one is my favorite, I think. xD

*** I don’t know what Maehara is saying there about Hayami. Simple sentence but it beats me. 速水か以外だな Hayami ka igai da na = Hayami (question particle) ‘expect for’ ‘be’ (particle used to soften the expression of emotion, desire, assertion etc.)
(also, a linguistic note for anyone interested: learned a way to “swear” in Japanese. Okajima used there at the end the auxiliary verb yagaru, which was quite interesting)

I think it’s also noteworthy that she wrote it there in katakana and not in kanji. In my experience, words are written in kana when they’re used for the colloquial meaning… so I wonder exactly what were you saying there, Bitch-sensei? xD

Hello everyone! I mentioned that it would take me a while to translate this chapter because it was quite long and I also had to do something for another fandom, but, it's done!

Gosh, I hope that wherever Hugh is taking Tetsu, he can do something to help him ;;
So we have a continuation of the flashback when Niccolo and Ildio met. I wrote on the 3rd page about how Ildio said "employer".
The word is written 雇い主 and it's used as the furigana reading while the kanji reading is 主人 which means "master", which is used when the word "Eve" is mentioned.
-C3 members are having a meeting and Tsurugi is making paper airplanes from the documents xD
Those 2 characters that appeared in the early chapters are also there! We never got much details about them like their names or what they do at C3.
Also, for a while, I think many believed that the girl was a robot made by Iduna...
Maybe Tanaka will give more details about those characters.
Page 8 In the panel where it shows Yumi and Tsurugi, I'm not sure, so it's just my interpretation for their expressions.
Sigurd said "internal conflict", which is written like this 内輪もめ and Yumikage also said the word but, the way he said was written only in hiragana うちわもめ, and this reminded me of some other cases where for example, if there are some complex words being used and a character that might be unfamiliar with the word or they barely used it conversations, I saw that they when they spoke the word, it would be simplified in hiragana or katakana sometimes, without kanji and I'm guessing that could have been the case here. Tsurugi said that he didn't understood what he said, I think the words that Sigurd used were perhaps too pretentious, this is my assumption.
Next, I have some notes for the panel where they show the images of Iori, Touma, Tooru and Jun. You might have seen these in anime/manga, you can see that Iori and Touma have crosses and Tooru and Jun have triangles, in Japan they are for rating.
Triangle (sankaku), can mean "weak", "average" or "in progress", partially OK.
Crosses (batsu) can mean "wrong", "not good", 'unavalible" in this case it can imply that something is "dead".
ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN! Or Yetis, depending on your preference.

I think that Sigurd might be German and that's why I wrote his names with the German spellings that I have found.
I hope that when Tanaka writes his name, it will be Sigurd and not Siegfried, I mean if they wanted to have his name written like the latter it should have been ジークフリート. Sigurd is the name of the hero from Norse mythology and that's why I use this one because of the many names Tanaka sensei used a lot of names from Norse mythology.
Another name for which we don't know how it's supposed to be spelled is the name of Sigurd's translator, Pisca.
Tanaka actually wrote on their Twitter that his name was misspelled and this will be corrected in the next volume of the manga.
In the chapter published in the magazine, his name was written ビスカ (Bisca), but it's actually ピスカ (Pisca) or it could be Piska...
I haven't the origin of this name, if someone heard it before, tell me!
His last name, I thought at first it was supposed to spell "Brownie", like the cake, but that's actually written as ブラウニー
So yeah, until Tanaka writes his name, I will use Pisca Browny.

One thing that I can't say for sure what it means, and I don't know who was talking in the small speech bubble in the second bubble where it says 同期型 which means "synchronous type" and my assumption is that it is referring to Sigurd's ability.

We are introduced a new character, Tsukimitsu Shirayuki, the mother of Iori, Miyako and Yumikage. Her name means "snow-white" and she was the former manager for the C3 branch in Tokyo.

Honestly, I don't know what Tsurugi and Yumi were reffering to..
Tsurugi said the word 流れ which has a lot of meanings, but the general meaning is "flow", such as the flow of water or passage of time, and it can also mean trend.
Among its other meanings I have found "course of events", "procedure", "process", although I mostly have seen this word used with the former meanings...Thus, I thought, what could have Tsurugi been referring to with the meanings from the latter, and my assumption is that given that Sigurd said that the idea of leaving matters to the Servamps was foolish, it could be that Tsurugi and Yumi were recalling the fact that they went trough this before, as in, being against the vampires, but now they will have to rely on them and cooperate with the ones that also want to stop Tsubaki.

I know it's not confirmed, but if Tsurugi is Gear's descendant, I hope they are actually related. Maybe there was a special case for Gear and had children and it wasn't the other cases trough which ancestors from the Kamiya family got powers.
I would love to have Tsurugi call Gear "grandpa" XD "Grandpuppy" as I called him in another post.
