Angstpril 2023 Day 1 Prompt: Liar

tw: character having trouble breathing, open ending

Obi-Wan knew, from the moment that he agreed to take on this mission, that it would be difficult.

Faking his death, having to pretend to be someone he wasn't for the sake of his own survival, having to interact with the likes of Cad Bane and Count Dooku himself without getting his cover blown…

Well, he knew from the beginning that it would not be easy.

But none of that was as difficult as it was to return.

The transformation from Rako Hardeen back to his own body was uncomfortable — painful, leaving him shaky and somewhat feverish. The vocal emulator wreaked damage to his vocal chords, and Master Che had confirmed that there was likely some infection in his throat that she'd like to monitor over the coming days.

Which obviously meant that he was stuck in the Halls for now. It wasn't ideal, but considering the fact that he couldn't keep down most foods because of his throat and his entire body ached any time he tried to move at all, he supposed it made sense.

Obi-Wan didn't exactly like it, but even that wasn't the worst part.

Anakin wouldn't speak to him. On the ship when they were returning from Naboo, he'd maintained his distance, and once Obi-Wan had gotten his commlink back, he'd sent Anakin messages frequently, only to receive nothing.

Obi-Wan knew that the deception had upset Anakin. He understood why — more than most, he understood.

But he had hoped that Anakin would also understand why he did it.

"You lied to us," Anakin had said, when Obi-Wan had approached him on the ship. "What else have you lied to me about? Do you even care about any of us?"

Obi-Wan had no response to that — how could he, when he knew that Anakin was right? He did lie to them, after all.

And now he was here, alone, because he did what he knew to be right. Anakin wouldn't speak to him, Ahsoka wouldn't speak to him, Cody wouldn't speak to him, the Council wouldn't speak to him.

He'd succeeded on his mission, and yet —

He'd failed them all.

Letting out a sigh, Obi-Wan placed his commlink back on the table next to the bed. He winced as his throat spasmed at the rush of air, and then he coughed, bending forward slightly to gasp for air.

That seemed to trigger a chain reaction of sorts. The more he gasped for air, the more it irritated his throat, causing him to gasp even more. And the air wasn't even traveling down his throat properly, which meant that —

He couldn't breathe.

He couldn't breathe.

The room seemed to tilt on its axis around him as he shuddered and gasped and placed his forehead on his knees. There was a ringing noise, muffled by the blood rushing in his ears, followed by the sound of footsteps. Voices surrounded him, but he couldn't make them out, not until —

"Obi-Wan?" A hand on his shoulder, pushing him back until he was lying back again, head arching backward in a desperate reach for air. He couldn't speak, couldn't breathe, couldn't —

"Okay, okay, just hold on." The voice was gentle, soothing. "Your throat has swollen up too much. You're not getting enough air."

There were hands holding him down, the hiss of a hypospray, followed by the feeling of everything getting floaty and blurry, until…

His eyes snapped shut, and the memory of his lies that constantly plagued him faded away.

#so i called my landlord the other day about the cannabis smell #and he called the police to ask what to do when the smell comes in strong #and he was told that i should call the police (so basically the emergency number) when that happens #and they'd send the police to inspect the situation _while_ the smell is still strong #but i'm too much of a wussy because i'm scared they'll get angry at me for calling them about something like this 😭 #because i made the mistake of reading some bulletin board discussions again and they were all like 'nah the police have better stuff to do' #and anyway now i've also started doubting myself because whenver the smell comes (which is still pretty much every single night) #i'm first like ewwwww that's definitely cannabis #but then when i try to brace myself for actually calling the police i'm like 'but what if it's not and i'm overreacting' #because the more i try to smell it to become 100% sure it's cannabis the more vague the smell becomes :S #i also already had a weird dream about the neighbour i think it is bullying me bc they somehow found out i had called the cops on them 😥 #so yeah i guess i'll just move out instead :) #or sit in my apartment with all the doors closed every fucking night

So I made a plan to play a game I like this summer with the language settings set to Japanese for practice, and the only two games I own that would let me do that are Zelda (Both BoTW and ToTK) and Deltarune (technically Undertale too, but I'm not keen on replaying it due to various reasons).

I gave Deltarune a try today, but quickly found out I uh, have a while to go before I can play it like that. I was able to stutter through the light world dialogue since it was all in kana (alphabet characters), but apparently, the dialogue is written differently in the dark world. It's very kanji heavy (the complex characters that mean whole words, such as 図書館 (library) and 水族館 (aquarium), so I was looking up wayyy too many readings and not actually remembering the words I was trying to learn.

However, I did manage to make it to a very important scene :3

He's really just making sounds here lol; "eh- that's- Kris!?" (ちょ... is a shortening of ちょっと, which, while literally meaning "a little," can also be used for "hey..." or "that's a little...", to my knowledge)

Anyway just wanted to share that screenshot, will update when I actually get around to playing this in Japanese because gosh darn it I will do it one day

#tears of the kingdom is also kanji heavy but it also uses something called furigana #which is basically just little readings/pronunciations of kanji written really small above the kanji so younger people can read them #that way i can focus on vocabulary instead of reading one sentence every ten minutes #so i guess i'll give that a try tomorrow #yeah i don't actually know why kanji is used in the dark world but not the light world #maybe it has something to do with the dark world being more polished #(with stuff like the UI being more elaborate too) #so with that more refined style comes a more mature style of text? #i doubt the japanese version will ever suggest anything that isn't already present in the original version of the game #but i think it's pretty neat anyway #not rb #dawn babbles in japanese

Yami Yugi and Atemu

I wonder how much Atemu knows. 

Would having his memory affect how he acted? I know things would have been different. Because Yami is not Atemu, he doesn’t even know who that is. The funny thing is at first he thought he was Yuugi because it’s the only thing that made sense to him. Then everyone told him he was the pharaoh. So he believed them. Never once did he really remember anything. 

He believes what he’s told because he knows no better. People praise him for the things that he does so they must be right. 

But Yuugi representing the pharaoh in appearance doesn’t mean Yami is the Pharaoh as shown with Ryou, Ryou and Thief kings appearances differ greatly and so do that of Yami Bakura and his former self Thief. Yami looks like Yuugi because it is the body he is possessing. Not because that’s how he looked in life. 

For all we know and I would doubt this is true but it’s shown no one even Thief knows how the battle was ended. Zorc merely knew they lost. He lost. Maybe Atemu summoned Holactie giving up his life to summon the gods and bring fourth a goddess. Maybe those were his Ka’s all along? And he died in battle but Zorc and Holactie were evenly matched. Or perhaps they didn’t even get to that point in the battle maybe Atemu was never destined to defeat Zorc but he was chosen by fate to have three Ka beasts within him so that he could help those he loves defeat the darkness instead. Sacrificing himself to seal the gods into tablets so that someone may call to them and have them merge to form Holactie. Maybe she wasn’t involved in the first show down cause no one knew how to summon her. The gods alone could not defeat Zorc, so Heba enraged with his loves death despite just being the page boy used the puzzle and the items to trap Zorc and Thief in the ring in turn trapping himself and as a fail safe left by Mahado in the ring and with Atemu’s sacrifice it sent out a power surge and wiped Heba’s memories/that or he forgot due to trauma of the entire day and Thief and Zorc’s because a burry mess fuelled by a rage that slowly looses its reason the longer the ring festers in their souls. Thus involving season 0 and earlier season 1 actions, Heba was still carrying a now unjustified rage because it wasn’t fair. He wanted justice just like Thief. He just didn’t know what for. Then he met Yuugi and I mean actually met him and they begun their time together. (Though if this was the case I’d love for Heba to be in Thief’s game and revive his memories then just stare at himself in the water tears pricked in his eyes, hugging his waist. ‘I always wanted to be in your arms. But not like this.’ Then Yuugi shows up behind him calling out and he jolts eyes filled with an unusual sensation of fear as he sees Yuugi approaching looking so warm. So happy to see him, thoughts race his mind whether Yuugi loves him or the idea of who they thought him to be. Everyone was so convinced he was the Pharaoh and he’d grown to love Yuugi as he had once and still did love Atemu but would Yuugi love him if he knew. He tries to play the role but he can’t lie to his partner and tells him. Perhaps I can’t remember if ‘Yami’ playing as Atemu in canon revived any memories but perhaps Heba was there too, their his memories too. Finding Atemu’s name didn’t help him but it released his first loves Ka’s so he could do what he was meant to do so in the first battle. Atemu whispering the Goddesses name in his ear. He wasn’t loosing Yuugi to this war too and summoned Holactie. Anyway, got slightly off topic. And even reviving his memories he wanted to finish what Atemu died to set in place. Since this is au enough I can continue with this plot how ever I please. Heba can realise that what Thief and himself fight for is the same. For the love of those they’ve lost. But he needs to end this dance of death for both of them so he defeats Thief without looking back. The final duel where he uses the God cards against Yuugi (from memory he does at least) he uses them to finally free his love from the shackles of destiny and they reunite in the after life or we fuck death and Yuugi can have Heba, Atemu and Anzu as life partners. That or Atemu stayed in the after life and dated Thief cause I like Casteshipping and Atemu can send Heba back to life because he knows that Heba also loves Yuugi too and he’s served him long enough it was time to live his own life and someday they’d all be together again and he knows no matter how long that takes Heba’s love for him will never fade and his won’t either type stuff IDK but Yuugi get’s two life partners at the very least, he just has too much love to give for just one). 

Long story short we don’t actually know who’s in that puzzle. I can’t remember any concrete proof it was the pharaoh. Maybe his name went down in history for something someone else did in his demise. Maybe it was a cover up. Thief wouldn’t know. He died first. Everyone else just believes the history that’s been handed down to them and the visions that the items present to them. Plus I think the Ishtar’s are pretty good Proof that they were all just acting on their own accords. (Mostly cause I don’t believe for a moment they consulted anyone before sprinting underground, maybe they thought to seperate the items as their awaited the Pharaohs and the Thief’s return and just took their two and fucked over millennium of their family members before Malik murdered the cult with his alternate personality because he realised it was fucked up. That was once again off topic…anyway.) For all we know the items were just manipulating everyone to get history right. And if the gods were Atemu and they were released the prophecies wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. The Pharaoh was laid to his final rest with the destined duel.

Anyway back on topic again…

If Atemu retained his memories saying he was the one in the puzzle, how much did he remember, does he know Thief dies before the battle ends, does he know why Thief’s so desperately fighting him that he’d defy life and death for it. Did Atemu like as Yami just believe the things he was told, growing up in the palace, raised by those around him and taught what they believed, would he side with them. He might of seen it as the greater good, the items were created to save the world to cause peace (beautifully discussed in a post I read a while back, that also mentioned that no one expected Atemu to sacrifice himself but he did, if I find if I’ll link it otherwise let me know if you find it). 

Would his time away from home, his time with Yuugi change his opinion, does he struggle at night whether to tell Yuugi everything he knows, would he doubt his past, he did what was right. He fought for justice, which is why Bakura angers him so much because he’s literally a ghost from his past, it’s clear that he’s different that he’s twisted and demented from the justice seeking Thief he once fought in his first life. He wants to move forward but he gets an unjustified rage seeing him because it forces him to admit that maybe the things he fought for, believed in was wrong. Because the thing was in memory world, Yuugi placed his faith in Atemu that he’d do what’s right and believed what he said was the right, they wanted to save the world and defeat Zorc. But Atemu even then showed no remorse for the lives taken to create the items, he looked the other way with no memories as he found out he just fought for what he had always known, that he was the hero and Thief was the villain and that was that, black and white. 

There’s no real way to say how the battle truly ended the first time, this was a reenactment that was shown to be one that neither Zorc nor Thief knew how it ended, how they were defeated. Why they were trapped in the items isn’t clear at all times, maybe Thief/Zorc fused into the ring as an escape before they lost and maybe Atemu knew they’d return and sealed himself in the puzzle to continue the battle. But what exactly happened to their memories? was it a condition that he couldn’t remember, a fail safe as to not jinx the battles end (especially on Thief’s side), but why were Bakura’s left in better nick then Atemu’s? was it Zorc’s doing or Diabound’s? or did Atemu realise at the end and turn against the Gods and side with Thief realising the wrongs they’d done to him and being their hero, they took his betrayal very fucking personally. Maybe he went to the puzzle to do things right this time but they broke his mind upon entering in hopes this time he wouldn’t sway in loyalties and in a time and place unrelating to his past with a version of Thief that was a fragment of who he once was just living off rage and a dark god whispering in his ear for millennium, fuzzy memories plague him and a rage he can’t settle when he sees Yami because he knows it’s Atemu or at least he believes it’s him at least. It frustrates him he doesn’t remember and he doesn’t remember Atemu joining his side. So he doesn’t try to share, he doesn’t want to say it, the element of surprise was on his side and it’s been 5000 years in the waiting he wanted to do it right but he likes to make Yami question things such as messing with him in their duel on the blimp, he wants Yami to work it out himself even though he knows he never will.

BTW, take all this with a grain of salt cause my mind was just like who the fuck is Yami Yuugi. And went on a distracted tangent. I was actually thinking about Ryou and Yami Bakura then thought about Thief and the differences between them and then Atemu and then Yami, I consider Yami and Atemu seperate beings and peoples regardless of who they are, I just like thinking about how little we know about the ancient peeps. And since I spent like 5 hours randomly obsessing about this I wanna share it -_- have fun!

In other news, it’s spooky month and I accidentally watched a christian horror movie (yes, that is apparently a thing that exists) and didn’t fully realize until the demon started spouting anti-abortion rethoric, and this has once again made me think about how so many (western) supernatural horror movies are somehow simultaneously very secular and extremely christian to the point that it’s hard to even notice when they start to slide into propaganda because most of them present christianity as this natural and obvious status quo. You use a crucifix against vampires. Call a priest to deal with demons. No one in-narrative ever has any actual conversations about what this means, despite featuring largely secular characters who should by all rights be experiencing existenial crises at the face of all this proof of not just the supernatural but of god almighty himself. Christianity is just the Obvious Tool. Calling a priest is like calling a plumber and requires no reevaluation of one's world view. A crucifix is no different from a bag of garlic.

Despite being mostly an atheist myself, I strangely often find myself prefering stories that lean more into the christian aspect: angels show up, maybe god has a few lines, the devil personally makes an apperance at some point. You know, Supernatural and Good Omens and Constantine and Lucifer type christianity. At this point, it stops feeling like an assumption of One True Religion and starts feeling like any other mythology, not dissimilar to Rick Riordan writing greek gods. It’s just another fantasy element inspired by real beliefs. I really wish more supernatural horror leaned this way, or alternately in the complete opposite way where the monsters and demons are completely removed from christianity. Give me some pre-christian demons, get a bit creative with the concept instead of just copying the exorcist's homework, c'mon you can do it!

being neurodivergent is all fun and games until you remember those hourly quote bots on twitter and think well maybe I can't make a bot anymore but I could schedule a few quotes a day, that shouldn't be hard. it sounds fun to have a bunch of quotes of my favorite character Thirteen from hit mobile game Obey Me! and its sequel Obey Me! Nightbringer. and then you think about how arduous collecting the quotes is going to be but she's only been in the games for maybe a year and a half with little screentime and you love collecting things so you start but then you remember that you love collecting things so naturally you have ALL of her screentime in the game and suddenly you have 45k characters of quotes and are several lessons into season 4 (which is truly a trial in and of itself) but not nearly close enough to the end but you refuse to just stop collecting the quotes and make the account with the EXCESS of what you have already because you literally only have season 4 to get through and if you don't do it just seeing the bot (because now you've been informed you can make tumblr bots instead) will haunt you with that knowledge even if nobody else would ever know. this is a general anecdote of a situation that could easily happen to anyone though and not in any way related to my life

#obey me on side #ummm i don't have a personal tag yet because i hated looking at this blog before the revamp so i'll do that later #with the carrd. usually when i say i'll do something later it means sometime in the next 3 years but i actually mean this one #but rn there's no way to tell i'm a lesbian (except for the thirteen icon. + probably also the ruri-chan banner she's lesbian colors) #okay maybe you can tell but I want to be CLEAR #anyway i would also like to note that immediately before starting this project i spent a full week lamenting my lack of free time #because I wanted to write some fics. and then literally as soon as i got free time I went um. no. quote doc instead I think #????? girl why did you do that to yourself #fortunately i'm now bored of reading s4 so i can go back to writing #unrelated but all of these fics contain a significant amount of solomon and i like him that's not surprising but it was unintentional #which IS surprising. like okay one of them is about solodeus (specifically mc playing matchmaker so i don't clickbait) so that's obligatory #and another is based off of the new solomon card (IT'S CUTE) so that's also kind of obligatory #(the third one is based off of luke's card from the dnd nightmare a while back because i was entranced by its strange unbalanced party) #but usually i try to switch up the characters i write about to get comfy with all of them and not just the ones that make sense to me #that's not entirely accurate it's my one braincell bouncing around like a windows screensaver picking a new fave every time it hits a side #but also to get used to writing them all. anyway #i'll just write about satan to balance it he's always been a fav but i am obsessed with him in nightbringer he is so offputting and tragic #if you're still reading these tags please see above on th 'later is up to three years' in regards to the fics still haven't posted anything #hoping to change that soon though I WILL eventually.
