If ya taking requests rn still?✨😇😊💖
Ben Drowned general + NSFW hcs
A/N: yes!! absolutely. i love getting to talk about how the pastas do their pastaing in my mind. i have so many headcanons for everyone that im excited to share!! also sorry i forgot to include the gamer gf part but i don't think it would change a lot of what i wrote!!
btw sorry for fucking dying i have been busy 😭😭 but no one worry i will still continue to work on requests!! if anyone has any marble hornets stuff they wanna request i will zoom you to the front of the queue so fucking quick. anyways enough of me yapping.
cw: 18+ nsfw, toxic relationships, crying kink,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GENERAL
ben is mentally and physically 22, but he can be quite emotionally immature at times. when he died he never stopped growing and maturing, his soul was just stuck in limbo. think like the worst waiting room ever.
he's surprisingly tall, standing at about 5'9. he's lanky but not bone thin. could easily get pretty far in a fight without his ghost powers.
the link costume only appears when he’s in his ghost form. so for example, when he’s messing with someone on their computer he’ll appear as the canon BEN we’re most familiar with. when he’s just chilling in his physical body, he mostly wears beat up hoodies and sweatpants.
contrary to popular belief, ben's not the hardcore gamer everyone thinks he is. sure, he'll play some overwatch or whatever when he's bored but he honestly just prefers to watch tv and browse the internet. understandably REFUSES to play any zelda games. if you were trapped in a video game for decades would you ever wanna touch it again? exactly.
ben loves to draw little comics and troll (see: horrifically traumatize) people online. god forbid you get into twitter beef with this man because he will crawl through your monitor at 3am and leave you with a crippling fear of technology. dude thinks it's absolutely hilarious. a true knee slapper.
lowkey has a sugar addiction. will slam down 4 cans of pepsi in one sitting. he's very lucky that he's basically a ghost because the kidney stones would be plentiful.
ROMANTIC
you know that guy with the blown out speakers in his car, lives off of energy drinks and burnt blue razz ice elfbars, swears aphex twin is the modern mozart and works on the grill at your local wendy’s? yeah thats ben. or at least would be him if he was still human.
“why would you need a chair, my lap is literally right here babe.”
would absolutely wear your skin if given the opportunity. not in a weird way. he’s just EXTREMELY touchy.
he needs someone who is significantly more organized and motivated than him. he can go almost a week without showering and it should honestly be considered biological warfare when he tries to smother you with affection during these episodes.
after awhile of you guys dating he LOVES the idea of y’all showering together. he has a fear of water and while showers aren’t too much of a trigger, your presence helps ease his anxiety.
favorite pet names: bro, dude, dawg, babe, bitch (non derogatory)
not really a romantic but he tries his best. a perfect date for him is just getting some takeout, watching youtube, talking about stupid shit and play fighting. if you want something more traditional or extravagant then he’ll oblige to make you happy but those types of dates make him feel quite suffocated and nervous. try to save those for special occasions.
now let’s talk about his problems because just like the other creeps he is ANGSTY.
he’s probably the most emotionally stable and healthiest of the group but he definitely still has his toxic traits, after all this man is a ghost that mentally tortures and kills his victims through manipulation.
ben would never ever get physical with his partner no matter how enraged he is but he absolutely is the type to do some mental damage when he gets carried away. ben drowned? more like ben gaslighted.
the type to say some shit that would keep you up for years and then kiss you the next morning like the argument never happened. he finds it easier to ignore problems than to actively talk and fix them. you’re gonna have to teach him some important communication skills or else you’ll grow to resent him after all the bottled up rage.
a bit too brutally honest and blunt for his own good so if you have thin skin the relationship would fall apart pretty quickly. he wants someone who can drag him twice as hard as he dragged you. bonus points if your insults are consistently funny as hell.
please watch anime with him and discuss it. he would propose on the spot, especially if you play with his hair.
pro player tip: if you want him to clean his disgusting room, help him and make it fun! he just needs a little push and motivation at times. and being around you makes him want to get his shit together.
big fan of late night make-out sessions. i’m talking like 45 minutes straight of just slobbering on each other’s faces with tongues down throats. if you don’t want his hands running over every inch of your body then you’ll probably have to chain him to the wall.
NSFW
okay. so he’s a little inexperienced with his hands. he’s just a slow learner. be vocal with him about what you like!!
ben's about 7inches and slightly skinnier than average but he will have you seeing stars in record time. the dick game is no joke. he tends to go fast and deep most times.
i can see him being a switch in the idgaf-as-long-as-i’m-fucking way. dude will go with the flow and will try mostly anything.
definitely one of the least aggressive pastas during sex. he has sadistic tendencies but he’s more of a edge/overstimulate you until you cry versus a beat the shit out of you and rip hair out of your scalp type. he’s pretty vanilla given his occupation.
despite his love of roasting the fuck out of you on a daily basis, the only words that come out of this man’s mouth is heavenly praise. he looks at you like you’re the most gorgeous being on the planet and he’ll let you know it.
he loves to whisper praises into your ear while you ride him.
he's more of a receiver than a giver when it comes to oral. he'll absolutely spend hours between your legs if given the chance but nothing beats the sight of you on your knees and teary eyed with his length in your mouth.
he can be a bit of a head pusher but just let him face-fuck you every now and then, hearing his loud moans will be worth it.
did i mention how much of a crying kink this man has? you guys could be on round three and if he stares at your teary eyed fucked-out face for longer than 10 seconds he'll immediately get hard again. you'll have to beg him to give your poor body a break.
he's also into choking but only if he's the one doing it. if you try to restrict his breathing he'll panic and the mood would get ruined.

okay this post pissed me off so much i needed to make a response post for it because the logic in this tweet is so ass backwards it gives me a headache. for context the aphex this is referring to is aphex twin aka richard d james. he is seen as one of the pioneers of idm/braindance so people put a ton of value into his works. in 2015 he dumped a MASSIVE amount of his works that totalled up to 20 hours onto an anonymous soundcloud page. he did then delete a good portion of them later but whoever got to download them got them all for free. a majority of the tracks were demos and experimental pieces with about a dozen or so fully formed tracks . none of this was for a label and he even nearly got in trouble for doing this
an artists worth is not based on their monetary value. an artists releasing hundreds of their works for free has not "changed the game," even moreso from the fact that the majority of the dump was unfinished content and on an anonymous account. art shouldnt BE a game. why on earth would this be a bad thing in ANY sense besides the artist not getting money for it. is a musicians stuff suddenly worth less because you didnt pay a fucking cent for it???? like they WANTED??????
its even worse to imply that other musicians are now less valuable in some way because people are .. downloading a famous guys music for free. it goes back to that money = power capitalist bootlicker mentality that is killing music and other forms of art as a medium . the kind of mentality that yes, the "major streaming platforms" youre talking about ARE perpetuating and SHOULD be blamed for
go to your local gigs. buy cds from the artists you want to support. change the """"game"""" into something you want to see instead of scapegoating someone and tapdancing around the real issue. aphex twin did not change shit for giving out freebies

NO WAAAYYY YOUR NEW WIP 😭😭😭😭 YOURE TRYING TO KILL US !!!!!
and about music he listens to it's so hard for me to decide some genre i've listened to all the shane playlists on spotify and i can't decide
what about you????
-🫶 anon
ok so first off to my non stardew followars (sorry) im gonna start tagging everything with #sdv posting so u can blaclklist. love u
answer under the readmore to save u all from the harmful psychic rays of my thoughts
i habe been thinking about the answer to this question for SOOOO LONGGGGG because i feel this has layers like here's all the different factors I have to consider
[and willfully ignore because hes my wet pathetic doll i can do whatever i want with]
1. stardew takes place in like the 80's yeah? 🤔🤔🤔 i ignore this one most of the time. giving them cellphones is funny. its the 2020s they all just have bad cell service and dial up still
2. emilys 8 heart event shane dresses like a punk. Dude gives off "i wanted to be a goth in middle school but couldnt afford tripp pants from the mall but now im an adult and too lazy to try" vibes. maybe his music taste reflects this
3. Umm he's "old" Lol (affectionate) I see him like late 30's early 40's...
4. But is he like COOL old or THINKS hes cool old (important distinction you have surely been around both types of men before and know the difference)
these are all of the factors i have to consider when choosing what music he would listen to.. the like "game takes place during the 80s" thing is the rule i play fast and loose. I only care about it if its funny contextually. usually its funnier if its not the case. Anyways onto the actual headcanons
I think shane would have pretty bad taste in music but once u are friends with him he's open to listening to new stuff and if you show him something new he hadn't heard before he'd say "Huh you're kind of weird aren't you 😏" making fun of you for it but secretly he'd think it was good/ he is def open to listening to new stuff. He secretly does like old school country as well. Noone knows this. You discover john denver/johnny cash cds buried under his bed (he listens to them to feel cool)
I think he would believe he had an eccentric music taste but then you'd go through his collection and its like... weezer. rhcp. maybe some metal. and ur like. This is Dad Rock Radio Tier and he'd be like "WHAT green day isnt dad rock" (i dont believe this yet but id say it to him anyway to make him mad. you understand)
you'd show him some shit like roswell kid and he'd go crazy for it even though its kinda cheesy. also he's randomly into stuff like aphex twin too.
I feel compelled to make him listen to the music i like but i know that that's wishful thinking. he's a dork that's why i like him. i might have to compound on this later when my brain works better (it takes me several weeks to form a single creative thought)
I haven't listened to any shane spotify playlists maybe i should... i do have my own playlist of songs that REMIND me of him but not necessarily stuff i think he'd listen to. I'm too embarrassed to post this 😈

INTERESTS: writing, music, art in general, anime, games (both video and tabletop), animals, linguistics, mythology/theology, philosophical bullshit, making fun of philosophical bullshit, politics, guns (and other varieties of weapon), tech, vulgarity and misanthropy
writing: i'm a writer!! that's like, what i'm best at at the moment. my Main Project is a fantasy setting that i generally either refer to as Winds of Change (for the whole deal) or Arana (the main continent that i've developed so far). i'm currently developing a game to show it off and make other people as feral about it as i am, so i'm also learning how to make music and draw and such. but, at the moment the only skill i'd consider myself competent in is writing, so i primarily just call myself a writer!!
music: my taste is simultaneously deeply eclectic but also tends towards high amounts of specificity. i would say that my "main" genre is progressive rock and some of its derivatives, but i also love a lot of stuff like funk, soul, a small amount of metal, some IDM, whatever the hell death grips is, some early rap (mostly just NWA since that was what i grew up on), occasional jazz, like 2 indie bands, oldies, and on occasion normal people rock. artists i like include but are not limited to: yes, david bowie, king crimson, jimi hendrix, danny elfman, symphony x, dio, death grips, aphex twin, nwa, nat king cole, marty robbins, lemon demon, tally hall, jethro tull, midas, and masayoshi takanaka. i'm also told i have a nice singing voice, but i'm personally biased against such suppositions.
i like art, if you were to look through my likes (which are NOT VISIBLE ON THE TUMBR) it'd have a good amount of art. what that art is of, i'll leave to your imagination. i'm not great at drawing but i'm getting better!!
i like some varieties of anime and anime adjacent things. i'm not like, one of those anime fans though, y'know. in terms of series i like, i'd say i'm a fan of fist of the north star (i need to pick it up again), cowboy bebop (very controversial, i know(also need to pick it up again)), fullmetal alchemist (good series, one of the few i have finished), jojo (i haven't watched part 6 yet but i read the manga all the way into the end of part 7 just after part 4 had finished airing), early gen pokemon is something i come back to on occasion for mostly nostalgic reasons, i'm getting back into dragon ball (kill me), i liked gunsmith cats (the anime was only 3 episodes, you can watch it on youtube, i need to read the manga though), i somewhat recently read thru the entire original yu-gi-oh manga and was surprised at how good it was, and i read a lot of doujins!
i'm a gamer!!!!!!! i mostly love nintendo shit and PC games, and some series i'm into include zelda (arguably my first game series i was Way Into), fallout (mostly new vegas), elder scrolls (deeply love hate relationship), early pokemon, mario, the first deus ex game, portal, kotor, half life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a smattering of indie shit (primarily UTDR stuff), a bit of GTA, thief, pathologic, disco elysium, and MGS. i also like TTRPGs but being Extremely Alone, i'm basically screwed!!
i like animals of basically all varieties. definitely a dog person, though i also love cats.
linguistics is cool but i'm also Fucking Stupid so i haven't really gained much past a fairly surface level knowledge. doesn't stop me from trying!
mythology is cool! philosophy is cool too! to be clear i view the vast majority of it as bullshit and not to be taken seriously, but it's still interesting to think about at least!
like most human beings living in the modern age, i have a lot of very strong political views. however, i don't like to ascribe labels to myself since people generally hear the label and just fill in the blanks of what they already believe and go deaf to everything else you have to say. i feel like my stances should be fairly obvious if you listen to what i have to say, but here's my main deal in regards to this: i like freedom, not in the typical american way that's basically glorified grandstanding with deeply authoritarian tendencies, but in more of a way where i like the idea of people being able to live how they want without a threat of starving and such. i abhor bigotry, though it's very easy to say that i suppose. i try to be open minded and tend towards a live and let live attitude, y'know. i also oppose imperialism and authoritarianism, but i feel as though that should be considered the baseline
huge gun nerd. i've got Gun Autism, babey!!! don't worry, i'm not One Of Those gun people, i mostly just appreciate them from a technical level. i post a lot about guns, so if you don't like that you can either block the tag #turtlegunrant or just not follow!!!!!!!
tech, much like linguistics, is something i like quite a bit but aren't smart enough to Actually Understand. i'm also the variety of tech enthusiast who's a paranoid shithead, so i'm definitely more of a PC guy. i actually fucking hate touch screens, so i hate phones (which i know is rare for somebody born in this century). i love torrenting, piracy, and just generally downloading and archiving shit

A very energized review of XYZ by Gloo
Tumblr media
via rateyourmusic
This project is a collab between Iglooghost, Kai Whiston and BABii.
I don't really know if you could call this dance music, but it definitely makes me want to throw ass. If basically any track off this got played at the club, I would go fucking crazy. ESPECIALLY Teef Chizzel, with that Aphex Twin sample and crazy loud bass. I would absolutely kill that dance floor.
The mixing, and general production on this is absolutely crazy. It sounds… immersive? I'm not sure if that word can be applied to music in the same way it can to visual media, but it really puts me in a space.
BABii's vocals are also amazing on this. The layering, production and effects on them make them stand out, even in the maximalist production.
SCORE: 4.5/5

I just had the most terrifying dream sequence ever and I’m posting my frantic journaled memories of it that I just wrote. So many details that escaped too fast but it was so scary and so real-feeling
Eagles everywhere
Thing-like infectious presence but it was supernatural
Old derelict house
Girl in the dream with lots of charm
Lived in the old house and had everything padlocked, it kept “baddies” out
She was beautiful, but had decayed and missing teeth
We’re dating and I’m almost hypnotically smitten by her and at this point most everything about her seems normal, just irresistible. But a good being who is clearly scared of something. Her name is Chell. She goes to a party and returns, tells me she had sex w someone. She’s immediately candid about it and kind too but totally remorseless/guiltless
It upset me but I don’t freak out and I’m not mad or even really sad, just feeling weird
We try to talk about it but my mom is present like way down a hall thaf felt almost like a bleacher
Mom sent me weird text messages (Beatles and rhyming, cryptic but creepily playful don’t let them in type stuff, etc)
Suddenly mom is leaving. She talks to the girl and l on her way out like she knows Chell and asks if she liked the gift she got Chell (glass figurine of a turtle)
Asks if it’s gonna be one of those things she gives away and Chell candidly tells her probably
Eventually mom leaves
Chell ponders having sex with me (as if it doesn’t matter if I want to or not, like I’m going to be seduced regardless) and we’re embracing but I break free and tell her I’m leaving
I’m suddenly outside the house in front where there are two gate like doors with metal latch locks applied to them by chell
I pull out the locks and they just both kinda slide out from their wooden posts with not much resistance
Chell immediately walks out the house frantically approaching me freaking out and I’m demanding to know why they need to be there
Immediately an old woman next door appears and is really creepy
And a young boy up the road is running toward a woman
He kills her
He and the woman both quickly approach us attacking
Glimpses of their eyes and they’re white and empty but malevolent
We’re running into the house and an eagle is perched, huge and foreboding
Time jumps and Chell is gone and friends have come
I’m holding something when I’m in the house and one of the beings is in there too attacking me
One side of whatever im holding does nothing but I flip it over and it damages the being so I run, I get free but an eagle is perched in front of me and forces me to redirect and return
Then friends and I are hanging out in the house and we’re trying to figure out who is possessed almost like The Thing. But some of us are keen to what’s happening and some arent
Tommy starts playing aphex twin
We think we know who it is because someone starts dancing really strangely (the old woman did that the first time I saw her before she approached) so we attack them
Chaos ensues until tommy peers into some small figurine and eyes an old yellowed 40s style picture of a woman with tight curls of the eras style
Immediately becomes possessed almost like being infected by a memory that wasn’t his
Dances very strangely and begins attacking
I am trying to escape and running inside and outside the grounds of the house
The house is kinda like the old Victorian mansions in downtown hattiesburg but more derelict and less pristine
Each time I think I’ve gotten away I’m running into what feels like open space and I see one of the huge foreboding eagles so I turn paths and then it begins flying (shepherding me back? Trying to get me? Either way they’re very powerful forces and I cannot cross their path like my body and the space around me wouldn’t let me)
Finally dark slow loud industrial techno music is playing, carnage and chaos is everywhere
I run and run and see another eagle that redirects me
Then another
And another
And another
Until suddenly I have nowhere to turn and I’m surrounded by a dozen of the evil eagles
I wake up

Otacon, Sunny, Sorrow
Otacon:
my general perception of them:
OHHHH THAT MAN IS SO BABIE he deserved so much better than what he got and he is a fellow otaku so he's based
an unpopular opinion or, failing that, a fun fact:
Ummmmm fun fact: he's married to snake
music i associate with them (if any):
Erase or zero (a vocaloid song that is just otasune core) just any cheesy jpop song
if I feel (spiritually) like I could beat them in a fight:
Maybe, but why would I???
Sunny:
my general perception of them:
THE BABIE 2.0 SHES SO PURE OMG ABSOLUTE ANGEL I WISH HER THE BEST
an unpopular opinion or, failing that, a fun fact:
Unpopular opinion: despite being outwardly cheery and bringing sunshine to others, Sunny has a lot going on in her head *gives her a hug*
music i associate with them (if any):
Again, cheesy jpop and vocaloid like PON PON PON, Sing & Smile, Lots of Laugh
if I feel (spiritually) like I could beat them in a fight:
Yes, rather easily but why would I???
The Sorrow:
my general perception of them:
SLAYYYYYYYY WHAT AN ICON HES JUST A MAN THAT LOVED HIS GIRL AND DOES GHOST SHIT
an unpopular opinion or, failing that, a fun fact:
Unpopular Opinion: he was super clingy and often possessive of Joy
music i associate with them (if any):
Hmmm... I'm not sure really the only thing that pops to mind is old yet off sounding classical tunes like valse sentimentale, or maybe Aphex Twin stuff
if I feel (spiritually) like I could beat them in a fight:
Nah and if I did, The Boss would kill me!

Zooming in With Herbert
Tumblr media
Christ, was this 17 years ago? Thinking about Herbert and his grooves because of this review I did this week sent me back to one of the first features I did for Mixmag back in 2006. It was a pleasure to do and really, really stuck with me - especially his bit when we were sitting on the beach about how much sonic information was surrounding us in the moment.
👇🏻👇🏻
In the sleepy Kent seaside town of Whitstable – more famous for oysters than techno – Matthew Herbert owns a modest but pretty old coach house. It’s sweetly rustic outside, functionally modern and open-plan inside. A couple of young mums from down the road have popped in to say hello and have a cup of tea; Herbert is yawning, stretching and saving the tunes he was up late making on his laptop-powered mini studio. Musical equipment is dotted around; it could be any moderately untidy techno fan’s house. Herbert himself – in Fred Perry and low-hanging jeans – doesn’t look at all out of the ordinary for a 30-something with a raving past. He holds up an artillery shell.
“It’s from a Tornado bomber,” he explains, “in fact this one was actually salvaged from a battlefield in Iraq, so it’s been used in a combat situation. It’s so well-constructed, some of the most precise craftsmanship around; but look…” He slides off part of the brass casing, taps it on the table and an incredibly clear tone rings out. “It makes a really beautiful sound, like a Tibetan temple bell or something. So I’ve sampled that…” He hits a key on the laptop and a chiming melody starts up, building into a spacey groove. It is indeed rather beautiful. “…I’ve taken something designed only to kill and changed its purpose completely.” Herbert might appear ordinary superficially, but it swiftly becomes obvious that his image as dance’s nutty professor is not far wrong.
Matthew Herbert’s compulsions to experiment and play with ideas have been obvious throughout his career. He started playing raves on the West Country free party scene with Aphex Twin. His albums are some of electronic music’s most experimental (but still listenable) works. He talked Dizzee Rascal into coming on stage with the Herbert Big Band of veteran jazz players, and his discography veers between brutal techno, gorgeous electronica and sexy disco. He’s turned politics into theatre and protest into weird noises; when he played with the Big Band in Syria (“I really wanted to play in the Axis Of Evil!”), the moment when they created a rhythm track by ripping up the Daily Mail drove the crowd wild with shock and delight (“they could be arrested and tortured if they ripped up their own newspaper, so this was amazing for them”), and at a solo show in Australia the ravers’ biggest reaction was when he sampled himself destroying the sponsors’ video tape that has been projecting footage behind him. His new album Scale, overflows with wonky noises and stunning songs. It contains samples of 723 different objects and instruments – from meteorites to petrol pumps to underwater drumkits – and for every last one of these, he has an explanation connecting it into his wider worldview.
Looking more closely around Herbert’s living space, it becomes clear there are quite a lot of books on odd topics like the philosophy of food or the economics of armaments. It’s a perfect, still Summer day, though, and we decide to stroll down to the quiet beach nearby. As we go Herbert points out how even though it seems almost silent that every sound we hear could tell someone about our situation, from the health of the birds singing to the types of cars to the type of building work going on – and how each of those illustrates the economics and ecology of the area to someone with an expert ear.
It should be enough to give you a headache just thinking about it, but the weirdest thing of all is that listening to him explain all this is oddly enjoyable. Like his music and political performances, it’s funny rather than preachy, and it’s obvious that he does it because he enjoys it. Of course, being Herbert, he has a detailed explanation of how he combines fun and ideas in his records. “I like to construct each album like a hotel. You can just come in and have a drink at the bar and have a good time – but if you want, you can keep coming back to explore much further.” Behind every door – every sound or rhythm – is something going on, he says. Through track titles and information on his websites he gives away “keys” that let you uncover a little more of what’s going on and understand the whole thing a little more. In a world where downloading individual tracks dominates, this is a unique way to get people listening to and thinking about a whole album.
It’d be easy to characterise Matthew Herbert, dance music philosopher (and ‘hotelier’!), as a classic outsider. As we sit down on the beach to continue our chat, though, he insists he had a “totally normal middle-class Kent childhood; I was a very sociable kid, really”. At school, however, he avidly looked for connections between things: “it would always fascinate me if, say, I found out that the dinosaur triceratops is called that because it has three horns. Straight away that animal is connected with numbers, words, history, and just about every other subject.” He was addicted to music from infancy too, picking up new instruments at a rate of knots, and devouring jazz and classical theory.
His introduction to raving came at Exeter University, where he got stuck into the West Country free party scene along with Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Global Communication, and experimented with his own dance tunes. The scene was separate enough to be distinctive – “no-one could afford to get to Bristol let alone London” – and held together by the legendary Mighty Force shop and label, which brought in Chicago acid tunes and released Aphex Twin and Herbert’s first records. Herbert loved the exchange of ideas at those early free raves: “council estate lads from Plymouth or Exeter who you’d expect to be out stabbing people, dancing and talking with the landed gentry who’d given up their land for parties.” Promoters would get him to play his quirky, housey tracks after sunrise, “with everyone sitting around talking and feeling really… strange!”
Herbert kept with his organic, emotive sound – often featuring his partner Dani Sicilano’s mournful vocals – through the 90s, even as the underground favoured relentless instrumental techno. Fashions have caught up with him now - the classic Around The House and Bodily Functions albums sound incredibly fresh in today’s Minimal climate – but he has kept moving on in ever-weirder and more diverse directions. For his last album, the wonky and experimental Plat Du Jour,’ Matthew had a pie baked in the UK Foreign Office, flew it over to the site of a battle in the US Civil War, and got a guy who had served in the CIA in Vietnam under Nixon to shoot up the cake with an old Nazi officer’s pistol. The various connections between the factors in the pies destruction relates to the history of international conflict and the globalised food but just as importantly Matthew points out “it seemed like fun to go to such ridiculous lengths to blow up dear old mom’s apple pie!“
Perhaps this just sounds barking mad, but it also illustrates the method at the heart of Herbert’s madness. Life is a projectfor him, a series of schemes to have fun whilst developing his ideas about the connections between things. Almost all the money he makes from the remix and film soundtrack work which increasingly comes his way (he is currently pitching for his first Hollywood movie) is ploughed into further developing his unique musical and political ideas, and into supporting his fellow maverick artists through his Accidental, Soundslike and Lifelike labels.
The dedication to investing in creating great stuff is also important throughout Herbert’s extended musical family, including the promoters of the infamous Soundslike:Werk parties in London. These parties, as well as providing some of the most twisted electronic music and raving atmosphere in the capital – held in unusual venues like old cinemas and art centres, they are proper all-night raves where live electro, techno, grime and other, weirder electronic styles run together into non-stop delerium – are run in typically ethical fashion, with profit shares meaning that international DJs playing a couple of hours don’t get paid more than barstaff who sweat it out all night. This attention to detail means that, without being all knit-your-own-hippie-party worthy, that they can provide a genuinely mental atmosphere without the shadowy presence of rip-offs and psycho promoters - “club owners are so often a certain type of person,” says Herbert, “very very motivated by profit – it’s a very pure form of capitalism nowadays.”
That sort of commitment to making the party a collective effort is something he feels was strong in the free party scene til the Criminal Justice Act of 1994 put a stranglehold on the scene, sending soundsystems abroad or into clubs. “The potential is still there,” he says, “after all, how many people are out socialising, listening to music dancing themselves wild every weekend across the world? Millions? Tens of millions? But there’s very little sense of that having a purposenow.” One of the rare occasions where he seems less than enthusiastic in conversation is talking about purpose-built ‘clubbing bars’, which he has seen more than enough of in his years of gigging and DJing: “I would happily never set foot in another bar again; they’re all starting to look like such clichés now, no beer that’s not bottled, no sandwich that’s not a ciabatta…”.
This talk reminds us that it’s getting to lunchtime. We walk with crunching footsteps back up the pebbly beach back towards where Herbert’s hefty old BMW is parked, ready to head out to a country pub to eat. The cars (he has two souped-up Beemers), he admits, are one of the contradictions in his personal politics. “They’re my real weakness,” he laughs, “obviously I’m concerned with our oil addiction and global warming, but these do at least fit with my thoughts on craftsmanship. And they are very fast.” Rebuilt and hand-tuned, these cars will last a lifetime, unlike modern cars, designed for obsolescence and riddled with so much computer technology they’re nigh-impossible to fix.
That is one of the vital parts of Herbert’s philosophy. Whether it’s cars, political ideas or music, he believes in things built to last: antidotes to the ever-hungry and wasteful culture of constant consumption that seems to dominate now. And unlike politicised rock stars – the Bonos and Stings – he doesn’t believe in preaching; rather than tell you what you should be doing he wants to lead by example, showing that the good stuff needn’t be trash, and that thinking about your place in the world needn’t be a drag or the province of hippie dreamers. “Enjoying life,” he says, “doesn’t have to make you dumb; you don’t need to compromise, in life or in music.“
Over lunch we talk about the future. Planning long-term is out of the window right now, while he works out how to promote and tour the lush intricacies of Scale – he’s busy working out how to reproduce songs recorded with a 50-piece orchestra with 3 musicians. However as he is entirely his own boss, running his own labels and planning his own gigs, he is not bound by traditional music industry timetables, and is keen to keep the touring flexible to allow for all his other activities. He is increasingly being courted by the art world and is busy planning the first of his regular columns for a highbrow art magazine. If the aforementioned Hollywood soundtrack pitch comes off, that will take up his time for a while, otherwise he will get back to researching and reading, “looking for more new ways to make sounds nobody has ever heard before”. It’s not a bad life, being a mad scientist.

🥃 🍉 for the OC ask game!
Thanks for the ask fren ✨
🥃: If your OC was in this universe, what would be their favourite show/book/band/social media platform?
Sophie — game shows. Especially Family Feud because she loves watching people be dumb as hell together, as long as she’s not involved
Mika — he strikes me as the kind of person who would pretend he’s not interested in watching whatever silly reality tv show is on, but is lingering around the TV just a liiittle too long before he finally gives in, sits down, and asks what shit Jessica was talking about Ashley to Gina
Ales — this one’s tough because I don’t see him being too interested in the internet or TVs/movies, nor is he much of a reader. However, he does love music, especially dance music, so I think he’d really love weird experimental shit like Aphex Twin and other forms of niche electronic music, as well as more popular stuff like Daft Punk
Kit — she would love Twitter for the immense amount of shit-starting and shade-throwing potential
Lily — LOTR and Game of Thrones, she just thinks it’s really fascinating what humans think the supernatural world is like. Ironically, she thought the classic Dracula film was boring as hell.
🍉: Does your OC have a particular piece of jewellery that they always wear or refuse to part with?
Lily does! She has a locket Alucard gave her containing the fang of the first vampire she ever killed using real vampire powers. It’s her good luck charm and she wears it all the time.
