Women Pioneers from India 1/8 Amrita Sher-Gil Hungarian-Indian painter (1913-1941) #prompt: #artist Hailed as "one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century" and a "pioneer" in modern Indian art, Amrita Sher-Gil's works have influenced and inspired a number of modern day greats. Her paintings, inspired by the plight of common people, depicted the daily lives of Indian women in the 1930s. Her most notable pieces include Young Girls, Self Portrait as a Tahitian and Two women. The last mentioned is believed to be about her longing for her lover, Marie Louise Chassany. In 1941, at age 28, just days before the opening of her first major solo show in Lahore, she became seriously ill and died. leaving behind a large volume of work. The reason for her death has never been ascertained. Her mother accused her doctor husband Victor of having murdered her. #portraitchallenge_2019 by @augustwren @ohn_mar_win 26/50 #womenempowerment #pioneers #womensmonth #march #feminism #artist #artpioneer #amritashergil #20thcenturywomen #brave #womenshistorymonth #womensday #2019 #scatterjeesystem https://www.instagram.com/p/BvHZ45vh-Mb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ol716zaepb7k

Best known for incisive collages and assemblages that confront and reclaim racist images, Betye Saar emerged in the 1960s as part of a wave of artists, many of them African American, who embraced the medium of assemblage. She went on to become one of the most significant artists working in this medium today. The daughter of a seamstress, and a printmaker by training, Saar brings to her work a remarkable sensitivity to materials. Her imagery is drawn from popular culture, family history, and a wide range of spiritual traditions. The exhibition is the first to focus on Saar’s sketchbooks and examine the relationship between her found objects, sketches, and finished works.
