Was going to do WIP Wednesday this week because I want to try and do it a bit more consistently this year, but I've just realised all the fics I've been working on are ones that I'm really just editing. So might wait until next week instead :)
Though I am thinking of different WIP Wednesday ask games to do, so I might start doing something a little bit different

Tag 9 people you want to get to know better
Tagged by @enigmaticxbee and @perpetually-weirdening-- thanks y'all!
Currently reading: The Birds and Other Stories (Daphne du Maurier), Alright Alright Alright: An Oral History of Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused (Melissa Maerz), Map of Another Town: A Memoir of Provence (MFK Fisher), and Persuasion (Jane Austen).
Last song: Edge of Seventeen, Stevie Nicks
Currently watching: Just finished Daisy Jones and the Six, starting Ahsoka, putting a rewatch of Ted Lasso on in the background in the afternoons; watched That Thing You Do! again w/my kids last night 😍
Current fic: went back to my own to see if I could get some writing mojo going (nope), and overall in a dry spell except for random older reblogs -- y'all should write more so I can read more!
Next on my watchlist: Reservation Dogs (s3), Only Murders in the Building (s3), Justified: City Primeval; going to start Freaks and Geeks with my 15-year-old soon (13 episodes of pure perfection that they're now old enough to share with).
Current obsession: Well, besides the obvious, this blog's whole raison d'être ... media- and culture-wise, I'm all over the place, but there's so much shit taking up my time rn that I don't have the headspace for any true obsessions, except maybe the ambitious strength goals I've set for my milestone bday in January. Maybe once all this goddamn work on my house is done and I don't live in the garage anymore?
Tagging some folks recently - and, happily, often - in my notes: @sigritandtheelves @nimlurks @tigercrane-kf @teenie-xf @charlotteflorentine @jewish-mulder @cock-holliday @bakedbakermom @waiting-for-the-day

I want to hear your answer to all the Bookish asks! But I will confine myself to: 📕 🧾📕
Wow. Those emojis look a lot a like. So, using my words...
What book has had the biggest impact on your life, and why?
What fictional world would you love to visit and explore if given the chance?
Who is your all-time favorite author, and what makes their writing so special to you?
Thanks for asking dear 💚
What book has had the biggest impact on your life, and why?
Probably the books that made the biggest impact on my life were [insert list of Astrid Lindgren's books], formative years and whatnot. If we're speaking of impacts made more recently, the answer is Klaus Mann's Mephisto. It was a third-eye-opened moment for me when I first read it five years ago. I've been returning to it due to ~ current events ~ and if it doesn't bring me comfort it at least brings me an explanation of what's happening.
What fictional world would you love to visit and explore if given the chance?
The city of Echo, from Max Frei's series "Labyrinths of Echo". In particular, I'd want to try all of the wonderfully described food.
Who is your all-time favorite author, and what makes their writing so special to you?
That's an unfair question! Favourite, in singular!? I'll slightly rephrase the questions: who is one of your favourite authors?
And to this new and improved question, I'll answer Ursula K. Le Guin. Her prose is beauuuuutiful. And her novels do a fantastic job of tackling difficult topics, discussing ugly things without gorey glory, somehow encapsulating the entire humanity in her relatively short novels.

13 from the author questions?
13) your strengths as an author
I word good. No. Seriously? Ummm...
Feelings, I think? I think I'm good at conveying my characters' feelings in a way that is relatable to the reader. I'm also pretty good at having distinct styles and voices for each character, even in third person; you always know who's talking. And maybe less in whump (although I've heard a few comments to the contrary), but imagery.

Hello, thanks so much for sending these. It really made me smile and it's given me something to do on the train :-).
Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
It's queer Paul all the time. I'm so close I can almost smell it. I'm packing it off to the beta before the end of the week or so help me... I'm really, really enjoying thinking through the differences that would have on their relationship and what that would mean for how events played out. It's also impacted how J&P interact, which is so fun.
But I've also started that Love Actually India AU and the 1970s affair fic. I've got a few thousand words of these down.
I've also got those follow-ups to Going Nowhere. But I've only got snatches of dialogue for those. But, I'm desperate to get more done.
Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
I'm super excited to write Paul and John coming out in Going Nowhere, actually. I think that's be a really interesting contrast. Plus, I love putting them in the middle of drama and seeing how they cope with it together.
Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)
Hmmm, this is so hard!! I'm just going to pick something from QP because that's open right now.
He didn’t know why he wanted Mike to see it. Maybe just because it was the fulfilment of his plans, the fruit of the seed planted by his dad’s slap. He thought later that perhaps he’d needed a witness to make sure it was real. Or maybe he knew that it was only acting if someone was there to see it. Without that it was just the horror in the pit of his stomach when he looked at the fence.
I guess I like this because it's me working through Paul's thoughts on an incident that, from the outside, seems so scary and sad.
Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
Yes, pretty much. I'm mostly writing for myself at this point, so it's what I want to be able to read but doesn't exist. I'd read probably a wider range of things than I write. Like I'd read one shots and character studies or sad endings. But I don't write those.
Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
Titles *the sound of distant sobbing in the background*. They're too short for me. Like, I feel the need to sum up the entire point of the story and it just makes me go insane. Hence I'm still calling QP, Queer Paul, 80k in... Summaries I don't mind. I just go with the overview of the plot/concept and then try and give a flavour of what the story's vibes are. I guess I'm not too worried about 'selling it'? As long as it's clear what it's about and that the tags add vibes and things I look for, then I assume people will give it a go if they're interested in that sort of thing. Perhaps I'm wrong.

for the ask game!
Do you prefer when people are familiar or unfamiliar with your source when they meet you?
I don't really care. The likelihood of people being familiar with my source is low, at least in a small middle of nowhere town like mine, so I don't care at all.

If you get this, answer with 3 random facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications, anonymously or not! Let's get to know the person behind the blog!
Oooh, I like this game!
Okay, uhhhmmmmm, random facts about Ace...
Ace's favorite animal is, and has been since baby, the turtle. Why? Because Ace's very first stuffed animal was a multicolour turtle named "Buddy", which Ace's mom bought along with Ace's crib, because that's how the baby-supply-store displayed that particular crib, and Ace's mom thought the multicolour stuffy in the white crib looked nice. Ace still has Buddy, as well as "Sweety", a second stuffed turtle that at one point (but no longer) looked exactly like Buddy, bought from the same baby-supply-store as a decoy as soon as Ace's parents realised baby Ace couldn't sleep without Buddy, for when Buddy needed to be washed. Baby Ace never, not even once, fell for this trick, to the bafflement (and annoyance) of Ace's parents.
Ace can play the ocarina. A relative of Ace once bought the ocarina in question on holiday abroad to give to Ace, without knowing what it was. Why did they buy it if they didn't know what it was? Because it had the shape of a turtle, and everyone knows Ace loves turtles! Then Ace decided "When someone gifts you a musical instrument, even without realising it, you should probably learn how to play it!" And so Ace learned to play the ocarina.
Ace was a dinosaur kid. Please imagine, if you will, a very adorable five-year-old, rather looking like an itty-bitty Disney princess with a floral dress handmade by their mother and intricately braided, long golden hair like a miniature Rapunzel, looking up at you with large blue eyes and very enthusiastically rambling about the iguanodon and the stegosaurus and the parasaurolophus (no kidding), while showing you their precious plastic T-Rex "Tracy" (a gift from grandma). Now you have a pretty good picture of Little Ace. (Adult Ace looks decidedly less Disney Princess and more Dark Academia meets Hiker-of-questionable-gender, but still loves dinosaurs, and still has Tracy on display in their living room, right between the oil-lamp inherited from a relative, and the wooden Siamese cat Auntie and Uncle brought back from a trip to Thailand.)
...This has made me realise I have some rather unusual possessions, or rather possessions with unusual stories attatched to them. And I haven't even gotten to the hand-carved wooden chess-set, the picture of a house that no longer exists, or the domino mask leaning against the row of Agatha Christie pockets.

For the Fanfic Writer Ask Meme: A, M, U
A: Of the fanfic you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?
Obviously the arranged marriage AU, which is unfair answer because its the one that isnt published and also not even finished since i decided to rewrite some parts. But it is what it is, i could tell from the moment i finished the first draft that it was something really special and a level above my other stuff. I'm not sure i can put my finger on exactly why, it has a lot of emotion but its still self-indulgent and sex and messy like my other stuff, its not particularly serious or high-brow. But still i think its better, and i tried to think of a fic to say here that was published but none really seem to be a worthy comparison. All i wanted when i finished it at the time was to write more and see if i could keep that level up
M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with? Did it turn into a story?
Though one, i have so many aus in my mind i dont keep track with most of them. I'd say the weirdest kinky ones i have never became stories, nope. And i felt they were all a bit too much for the fandom, that tends to skew 'fluffy' and 'simple' and it was kinda hard to find motivation for my more out-there ideas when i knew wouldn't be anyone's cup of tea. I make aus for myself but when i wrote i wanted to share, so if there was no one to read i saw no reason to not just keep daydreaming about it for zero effort.
But not keep it too vague, the least weird one i had was an among us au…. yes. But going for the space-horror route and mosterfuck shenanigans. The other ones need too many words to explain so you'll have to die wondering.
As for non-kinky im sure i'm simply not remembering weirder ones. But one recent i had was when i came up with an entire plot for an addams family au fic and i was like………. yep they're not ready for it, scrap it. Keep it in the cozy corner of my mind.
U: Is there a pairing you would like to write, but haven’t tried yet.
Hmmm not really? For me to write i needed to be high-key OBSESSED otherwise i wouldn't even have scenarios to try. And it needs to be a long-ish term obsession, which i also havent gotten in a while. But to not leave this blank i think the closest i got to this in my memory was when i was in the capri fandom i wanted to write something for Jord/Aimeiric because i couldnt stand the slander they got in the fandom (everyone wanting to pair jord in the background of fics (not even jord-centric fics just yk lamen fic where he was just stadning there) with men he didnt even interact with even in aus where aimeric was aliveeeeeee PISSED ME OFF) and i wanted to do it JUSTICE but i never did and my carpi phase is gone so i can only hope someone after me did the justice eventually
