one writing trademark, maybe not universal but distinctive: a certain je ne sais quoi gift for achieving dramatic irony through an unreliable narrator.

point of contrast 1: some unreliable narrators are deliberately opaque, such that one has to first suspect they're being lied to and then start piecing the truth together, possibly requiring rereading; that's neither better nor worse, merely different, from this technique of yours that I'm talking about. you sell the narrator as unreliable while also making it perfectly clear what it is they're missing or omitting.

point of contrast 2: when some writers try to communicate those kinds of misunderstandings, they fall back on swapping in parts of the other party's POV in a way I find messy or distracting, or making the narrator a mindreader who knows too much about the other party's internal state to be realistic, just happening to miss exactly the hidden thoughts that would clear up the misunderstanding. that's a pet peeve of mine, so it feels very distinct from this technique of yours I like so much.

you present very clear and realistic perspective characters and their worldviews, but in a way that makes the reader very aware of the character's blindspots, and that's REALLY engaging.

oh gosh, that is lovely to hear! i am a big fan of reading experiences where you realize you have more information that the POV character, so i am really glad it works for you on that level.

2. Do you read/reread your own fics? Oh hell yeah, I definitely read and reread my own fics. (This was particularly true in my early days of writing Simon Snow, in the Fangirl-only era. I wanted Simon Snow fics SO BADLY it was like a sickness, so I definitely reread the ones I wrote, since there weren’t many others yet.) 

I’m always a little in a state of wonder about the fact that they are actually, finally, really FINISHED, so I definitely read my fics soon after posting, sometimes multiple times if it’s a story I was particularly excited about. And then usually, months (or even longer) afterward, I will read them again. After enough time has passed, rereading has a funny sensation, where I can’t quite remember writing it, or where I DO remember writing it, but it feels like it was written by someone else. (Because it kind of was.) 

10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting? For me, the Posting a Fic stage is almost always accompanied by frantic nerves about whether anyone will read it, will like it, will Get it. In that stage, there is a big part of me fearing/expecting that it will totally flop, so in that sense, getting any kind of comments reflecting enjoyment and appreciation, and especially the really thoughtful ones from the people who DID Get it, is a shock and a relief and a joy. 

That said, I’m still a little surprised at how popular “(listen to the) changing breeze” seems to be. Not because I don’t like it, but just because I never expected it to be noticed much.

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic? I will give you two, actually, just short ones. 

One, from “I Fell Into Grace”: “S’pose so,” said Crowley, tea-kettling internally.

And, from “amo (amas, amamus)”: So tired. It felt like being mortally wounded.

2 years late with some VtM Night Road Courier HCs because I'm late to everything, always (spoilers for Night Road I guess but also it's been two years). This is very long and doesn't even begin to cover my myriad thoughts lol

Echo is a Ravnos and despite a very shady past with very immoral things (trafficking and luring migrants to their death, eek) she’s got very high humanity. Turns out how kind she is to others is directly tied to how kind she is to herself, and she was not very nice to herself for the ten years spanning from 1997 to 2007.

Is insanely loyal to her BMW3 and kept it in tip top shape the whole way through. Made Dove swear to keep it safe. Dove agreed but thought it was stupid to be so attached to such a cheap car.

Echo's Cajun from Louisiana. As she was raised by her adoptive mother who was rather older than usual, French is actually still her native language and since she was home schooled she was educated in it too, up until she was 13 and her mother died anyway.

Despite this, most people think she's from some southwester urban centre, but when she's distracted she slips into being the good little Cajun that she really is.

Related, more than once she had to stop herself from saying "cher" once she got more comfortable with Lettow. She's not *that* brazen. Has definitely used it on Riga though, more than once and long before Lettow indicated he too had some feelings and wasn’t just humouring her.

Also calls her lobo cher. His name is Rocket and he’s the bestest boy and genuinely got her through some very rough times.

Echo is a siren feeder because the lonely little Ravnos craves connection so very badly. To say her relationship with sex is complicated is an understatement and Julian telling her she could honeypot Lettow really upset her quite a lot.

Speaking of Lettow, Echo's Ravnos and so her decision to openly flirt with him from the word go seems borderline suicidal. Gangrel do not like Ravnos and she knows it; Camarilla do not like Ravnos and she also knows that, pretty much nothing could be worse than a Gangrel Elder and Prince then, you'd think. But her clan compulsion is tempting fate, basically, so Echo was less actually thirsting and more pushing to see how far she could go before he smacked her down.

Given she ended up getting on the plane with him, the answer is "unlikely to ever stop her actually". Getting on the plane is also somewhat a case of her compulsion at play, her and Lettow had not at that point had an actual conversation about their relationship in light of the Aila stuff and their expectations, but also it's because she did not side with the Camarilla in the end, she just chose Lettow. With no real friends in Tuscon and no ghouls or anything she wasn't leaving much behind after she perma-friend-dumped Julian. And on top of all that, she just wanted to be there for Lettow when he was doing something hard and lonely.

Plus she’s always wanted to travel outside the Americas.

She is a bit worried thought as Echo has one dot in strength and zero dots in anything combat related. I can only imagine her sitting on the sidelines while Lettow's doing Gehenna Stuff cheering him on (while sitting on a cooler of Invidica Caul's fancy blood because the beau needs the best in this trying time and Caul owes her). Which should actually work, if the fact her playing cheerleader helped in both the Reremouse and Donati fights is anything to go by.

My #1 post of 2022

I was able to commission @harumeau for my main Wayfarer, Saraia "Sai" Sero, from @idrellegames and I've been grinning widely since I got it!

The Rona days were a bit rough, as you can see from Sai's expression and the visible mending, but the process to get here on my end was very smooth and lovely at least. I think she's probably worried about finding the Chalice, and she's out in the rain to hide her worries from Aeran. And to escape the smell in Oleander's.

Oh man. I mean, I wanted to finish AMO, but hey, progress! I really wanted to post something for the COC, but it’s not too late? I want to finish writing the Good Omens exorcism fic that I’m in the middle of… Basically I have a lot of rough drafted scenes in a lot of different stories and I always wish to have finished them all instantly, so I can read them.

For Good Omens: 

Untitled Stardew Omens Fic by Atalan. 

This is the perfect comfort fic. I love it so much that I podficced it so that *I* could listen to it (I just have to finish and post the last chapter), and I never podfic anything I don’t absolutely adore, because editing takes me approximately one hundred million years. I love this fic so much, I would podfic it AGAIN. (But I’d rather not have to though.) 

The Longest Night series by charlottemadison — 

 I haven’t podficced this yet but I WANT TO. (Will the new neighbor dogs ever stfu so that I can record again in peace? So far signs point to no.)

Apparently back in January is when I first read Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: an Integrative Approach by Nnm.  — 

It’s one of those fanworks that is so amazingly tied to the canon, in the best possible way, that I swoon, so like, watch the show so you can read this fic, okay?

For Carry On: 

Here is the tragic truth: I have read almost no recent Carry On fic at all. I had to take a break from the fandom last year (after six years of Intensity and stuff), and also because I’m writing a fic based in pre-CO canon, I was trying to keep it separate in my mind? Turns out it’s mostly impossible though, and I’m having fun re-engaging, so I’m looking forward to reading tons of Carry On fic sometime in the new year. Please send me recs!

writing trademark: someone blinking a lot, when they try to hide their real emotions! i don't feel like you overdoing it, but i only ever saw that in your writing, and so whenever it appears during the text, i'm always like "that's right, it's idiopathicsmile" :)

oh man, yeah, well-spotted! i have terrible body awareness (both in being physically clumsy, and also often forgetting that i have a body) but body language is of course tremendously useful as a shorthand in writing and the result is that i have an extremely small menu of physical tics that i am basically always drawing from, haha.

saturday: what gets you excited whilst writing?

I get excited when I figure out a puzzle-y plot piece, or do a bit of worldbuilding I particularly like. I especially enjoy writing sensory details, when I can really get immersed in them. Also finding a great metaphor. (And please note, I very rarely do all these things at the same time — I often will make a note like “METAPHOR HERE” because I know I will want something, but I don’t want to stop the general flow of the session to figure it out.) I also get really excited at the little character details that come up while actually writing — something that’s so much in their voice, or just sounds LIKE THEM.

november: do you have any rituals or requirements for getting in the mood for writing?

I’m both always and never in the mood for writing. (I say “mood’ but I really think of it more as a state of flow or focus.) I wish I had a more consistent, effective ritual for getting into it. Sometimes music helps (though other times it’s too distracting). Sometimes I light a candle and use a visual timer, to help focus in on it. I frequently do at least a little bit of timed writing to get started (i.e. writing as quickly as I can, no stopping, about anything or nothing, until a timer goes off — usually only 5-15 minutes). A bit of mindful breathing and stretching to start with can also help a lot. (I do have a small ritual that I came up with but I often forget to try it, even though I was careful to create a super-simple version of it to make it more doable. Still often forget though. Probably should put up a visual reminder.)

i'll do these as kind of a group with all three of em since i have ideas!! tyvm for the ask winter ^^

hypno kk: what are some quirks that your f/o has/you hc them to have? this is a general hc for all three + archer, but i think as slenderman/the operator's proxies (because the operator communicates exclusively via telepathy) they all have a sort of weak telepathic link between them! this is great for when they have jobs that require them to be quiet and still share information, but it's also fantastic for general memery and shenanigans when they're all in a close enough range to each other. some assorted hcs: - toby and archer both have echolalia so occasionally they'll both get into a kick where they just repeat a phrase/word back at each other until it no longer sounds like said phrase/word - skully can mimic bird calls Really well. it's almost uncanny how well he can repeat them and although there isn't much wildlife in the forest around slenderman mansion there are a couple of birds (blue jays :) ) that will come and sit on his shoulders in response - hoodie was a performing arts/theatre major in college and it Shows. it's one of his only interests that managed to still carry over into him being a proxy. he's much quieter about it since then, but the drama and the sass are still there. this man Causes Problems On Purpose. (this is.. sort of canon in mh? but not entirely so it’s canon in my self ship universe hehe)

kk lullaby: what's their favorite sleeping position? the four of them all kind of pile together! because there are few things better than a good cuddle pile. skully and archer usually cling to each other in the middle of the bed under a million blankets because they're both always cold. hoodie usually manages to tangle himself in a slightly less amount of blankets on either side of them. whichever side of the bed isn't being occupied by hoodie, toby sandwiches himself there on top of the blankets and often splays out into a starfish because it's really easy for him to overheat. there's also usually an undetermined number of plushies on the bed from all four of them so honestly if there isn't someone/something on the floor by the time morning rolls around it's a miracle
