Non Comprehensive List of the Nice Spanish Paintings That Mysteriously Ended Up in Marshal Soult's Collection
Sourced from the essay Seville's Artistic Heritage during the French Occupation in the book Manet/Velázquez: The French Taste for Spanish Painting, which can be downloaded for free on the Met's website which is frankly awesome but i wish someone OCRed their book
In 1852 at the sale of his collection, there were 109 paintings up for sale - 78 from the Seville School, including 15 Murillos and 15 Zurbaráns.
It's interesting that Soult wanted to legitimize his ownership of these paintings via receipts and official documentation - the biography of him I was machine translating talks about the king questioning his collection and him pulling out receipts for each painting. But, well, the essay puts it like this: "The existence of an official letter can be explained by Soult's desire to dress up in legal or formal terms what was in reality theft or extortion."
I might put excerpts from the essay in a different post, but for now, let's look at the list! Modern locations of the paintings are in parentheses, and I must say, for an essay critical of historical reappropriation of artwork, a lot of these artworks are still extant. Not a dig or anything, just an observation.
I do not condone extorting or stealing priceless Spanish artworks anyway
On with the show!
Murillo The Immaculate Conception (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid) Virgin and Child (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Nursing the Sick (Church of the Hospital de la Caridad, Seville) Christ Healing the Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda (National Gallery, London) The Return of the Prodigal Son (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) #MapMondays 1930 plan to fill New York Harbor with landfill! The proposal by T. Kennard Thomson was originally published in 1911 in Popular Science and would have filled the entire East River with landfill in addition to creating new peninsulas off of Staten Island, Bayonne and Sandy Hook, totaling fifty square miles! With the East River gone, Thomson proposed connecting the Long Island Sound back to the harbor by digging a new channel from Flushing through Brooklyn. Thomson revised the plan in 1930 (seen above), naming the new landfill City of New Manhattan, half of which would be in the state of New Jersey, separated by the extension of Broadway which would be a grand boulevard over railroad tracks flowing into a tunnel to Staten Island. This grand boulevard would be four miles long and three levels high, with trains, automobiles, and airplane landings! Tunnels would also go from Sunset Park to Bayonne, Red Hook to Jersey City, and Cobble Hill to Jersey City. #redhook #jerseycity #cobblehill #manhattan #nychistory #urbanism #longislandcity #queensny #statenisland #bayonne #eastriver #popularmechanics #civilengineering #brooklyn #dumbo #brooklynheights #tribreca #nyc #nyharbor #hudsonriver #longislandsound #urbanplanning #lowermanhattan #fidi #nycurbanism (at Governors Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cia2xlcOJP4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Olliminadze - The New Charmie?
Here are some lines from the first chapter of my latest fic 'Moonlight Sleeping on a Midnight Lake.'
It's my first CMBYN fic and since I can't leave my Georgian love alone, I had to blend it with ATWD. Sorry not sorry.
Meet Ollie, a cynical, listless professor from Bayonne, New Jersey, and some guy who is much younger and very nice. Since I feel that the capital of Belgium gets too little credit in canon literature, I took them to Brussels. Again: sorry not sorry. The beer is awesome there.
I spent the morning of my birthday teaching my last class in Uccle. In the evening the director of the academy invited me along with some coworkers and friends of his to a dance performance at a park in Waterloo. As we were riding the underground, I thought of what my foster daughter had said: ‘Don’t go to Brussels, Dad. It’s too dangerous.’
She was right. The capital of Belgium had seen terrorist attacks, which had caused dozens of casualties. But I had boarded the plane to Europe anyway. Growing old means that you develop an inclination to just not give a shit about danger. Maybe it is an innate, primordial desire to sacrifice oneself in order to spare the younger generations.
The show was held at an open-air theatre. It was boring beyond belief. Dancers twisted themselves and each other to blood-curdling dreampop music. The last act was a solo, with a young man claiming the empty stage and running around weightlessly. He depicted someone seeking something unfathomable, despondently and angrily, until an invisible object dropped down from the sky. He caught it, carried it around in the hollow of his cupped hands and showed it to invisible people around him. After that, he released the object and made swimming motions, indicating that he was following it into heaven.
The sun had set and the lighting on the stage was cold and bluish, and so was the dancer, who was wearing a tight, white tricot and matching pants. His hair had the color of slate. When the performance was over he sank down like the Dying Swan, but jumped up like a spring as soon as the audience started applauding. As I clapped along, with the program leaflet still in my hands, I realized that he reminded me of someone I had once known.
Wanna read more about Ollie and Merab? Feel free to check out the fic on AO3:
