I have a tragic backstory related to beans.

as a child my family was very poor, and we ate beans and rice for most dinners. But as fate would have it, I could not stand the texture of beans. My parents, upon seeing me turn up my nose at the table, would send 5 year old me to bed… without eating. I would go to bed hungry, and wake up shaky and sick from the lack of food. Eventually, my parents started letting me eat other things, but the damage was done - my growth had been stunted during my bean fast, and I would never reach the height of five feet, drawing mockery and scorn from my peers. And with that, I present the BEANINATOR

Is this thing on? Hello, friends. I bet you thought you'd never hear from me again. Some of you may have thought that I gave up on the beans, but I'm still beanin' around. So what have I been up to? Mostly the same old shit. All Messed Up went well this year. I'm training for the Ride Across Wisconsin in August. I got my partner to try Qdoba for the first time. As far as I know, that's still the only time. I've got a pretty neat sourdough starter that I have mostly been using to make dank pancakes from the discard. I brewed some ginger beer that was pretty good. Oh, and I bought a house! I've still been going to Qdoba on occasion, but I need to go to the location at Water & Juneau with the Grand Ave food court gone. They've been treating me pretty well there. I don't have the scale at work anymore to check the weight, but I'd say things have been pretty consistently satisfactory. I had to work early today and didn't have time to eat breakfast. I biked over to Water Street and found something new! Qdoba now has the Impossible™ fake meat stuff. I decided I needed to try that. I got the burrito the same way I always do, but they put on some of that faux meat stuff. I didn't tell them I wanted it until they had already given me all my rice and beans. The rice and beans were all adequate portions. The veggies didn't look all that great, like they had been sitting a while, but I was getting that beef, baby! I don't care about veggies anymore. I just want those spicy burger bits. It is really hard to differentiate it from ground beef, or at least what I remember ground beef tasting like. They didn't give me a ton of it, and it got kind of lost in the rest of the burrito. Again, I couldn't weigh the thing since I brought my scale home, but I would guess this one was above 650 grams for sure. I'm not so sure that the Impossible stuff is really worth the extra $2 (in this economy!?). There's a big difference in my mind between a burrito that comes in at just under $8 and a burrito that comes to just over $10 after tax. Things like Beyond Meat and Impossible Burgers are nice options to have, but I believe they are unnecessary in a burrito. They're kind of a gimmick. Maybe if I was getting some other kind of entree, it would be more worth it, but for real, what else is there to eat at Qdoba for people like me? Hey, thanks for reading. I miss you. Best wishes.

So beans are now a thing for me

I’ve been tracking my nutrition on MFP to make sure I’m getting my vitamins and minerals. I noticed I actually hit my iron goal yesterday and it was because I had a bowl of beans for dinner

Yeah just beans, basically. I also had some couscous and turkey burger mixed in but the iron bomb was deffo the beans.

Let me tell you something. Back in my early ED days I was DETERMINED to prove that my restricting was still a healthy way to lose. I only ate things that helped me meet my daily nutrition goals. Beans were one of them. HOWEVER what they don’t fuckin tell ya in the ED Handbook is that you will eventually stop caring about health. You won’t care about proving that you are eating healthy. It’ll all go out the window. In time you will forget what foods are healthy at all. It’ll all just look like poison. But now that I’ve been trying to recover for the past few months I’m slowly reconnecting with which foods have what benefits for my body. ALL food, even junk food, will fuel your body. But identifying what I need to combat certain symptoms like fatigue and dizziness has been really helpful lately.

So, beans. Idk how I managed to forget about beans. I’ve been looking at different veg and meats to see which has the most iron and here I was ignoring beans.

As weird as my beanie dinner was, it was so good. I was digging around in my kitchen and I kept coming back to this can of Franks and Beans. “That’s not dinner food,” I said to myself. “Then make it dinner food,” a voice answered. Wow ok fine challenge accepted. Couscous in. Turkey burger in. Pepper in. KETCHUP. IN. ....nice. I simmered them together, spooned it all into a bowl, and nestled into my armchair to enjoy it. I could actually FEEL my body responding positively to it. This weird bean concoction is what my body directed me to make and I was so glad my brain listened. I had such a comfy sleep afterwards. Bless you beanie bowl. What a good lil bowl of beans. Keep on BEANIN yourself. 🙈
