New YA Releases This Week!
Three exciting new YA books are hitting shelves this week! What's on your TBR?
Suddenly a Murder by Lauren Muñoz
Seven friends throw a 1920s-themed party, where it’s all pretend–until one of them is murdered. One of Us Is Lying meets Knives Out in this killer locked-room mystery.
Someone brought a knife to the party.
To celebrate the end of high school, Izzy Morales joins her ride-or-die Kassidy and five friends on a 1920s-themed getaway at the glamorous Ashwood Manor. There, Izzy and her friends party in vintage dresses and expensive diamonds–until Kassidy’s boyfriend turns up dead.
Murdered, investigators declare when they arrive at the scene, and now every party guest is a suspect. There’s the girlfriend, in love. The other girl, in despair. The old friend, forlorn. The new friend, distressed. The brooding enigma. And then, there’s Izzy–the girl who brought the knife.
To find the killer, everyone must undergo a grueling interrogation, all while locked in an estate where, suddenly, the greatest luxury is innocence.
There’s No Way I’d Die First by Lisa Springer
Debut author Lisa Springer delivers a spine-tingling, contemporary horror that follows a scary movie buff as she hosts an elaborate Halloween bash on her family’s estate but soon finds the festivities upended when she and her guests are forced to test their survival skills in a deadly party game.
Noelle Layne knows horror. Every trope, every warning sign, every survival tactic. She even leads a successful movie club dedicated to the genre. Thus, who better to throw the ultimate, most exclusive Halloween party on all of Long Island?
And with the guest list including the coolest kids in her senior class, her popularity is bound to spike. Hopefully, enough to warrant an expansion into podcasting. Plus, the fact that attractive, singer-songwriter Archer Mitchell is coming is honestly the candy corn on top. Nothing is going to kill her party vibes.
Except…maybe the low-budget It clown she hires to lead a classic round of tag. He’s supposed to be terrifying, though in a comforting, nostalgic way. Instead, the guy is giving major creeps. But maybe Noelle’s just that good at hosting?
Her confidence is immediately rocked when the night’s entertainment axes one of her guests. And he’s not done yet. If an evil, murderous clown thinks life is a game, then Noelle is ready to play. She’s been waiting a long time to prove that she’s a Final Girl.
Everyone’s Thinking It by Aleema Omotoni
Mean Girls meets Dear White People in this big-hearted, sharp-witted UK boarding school story about family, friendship, and belonging—with a propulsive mystery at its heart. Within the walls of Wodebury Hall, an elite boarding school in the English countryside, reputation is everything. But aspiring photographer Iyanu is more comfortable observing things safely from behind her camera. For Iyanu’s estranged cousin, Kitan, life seems perfect. She has money, beauty, and friends like queen bee Heather. But as a Nigerian girl in a school as white and insular as Wodebury, Kitan struggles with the personal sacrifices needed to keep her place—and the protection she gets—within the exclusive popular crowd. Then photos from Iyanu’s camera are stolen and splashed across the school the week before the Valentine’s Day Ball—each with a juicy secret written on it. With everyone’s dirty laundry suddenly out in the open, the school explodes in chaos, and the whispers accusing Iyanu of being the one behind it all start to feel like déjà vu. Each girl is desperate to unravel the mystery of who stole the photos and why. But exposing the truth will change them all forever.

I watched Kizazi Moto and I really liked it a lot! One of the things I found especially interesting was the difference in…I want to say emoting? expression? with how some of the characters responded to things. Like with tongue clicking and some hand motions. I thought that was very interesting. Did you have a fave episode?
YES! Finally, someone watched/sent in an ask about this anthology!
And what you said here, noticing the differences in emoting. I am so glad you mentioned that because, yes: African storytelling, particularly when it comes to bringing stories to the big (or in this case, streaming) screen, does have its own style of emoting, staging, and composition.
And, yes, every culture does (for all people meme on Indian soap operas having the 'twenty dramatic zooms with matching music', you can tell that's a modernized carryover from traditional storytelling), but I have been yearning for African stories to be able to be seen by a wider audience so they can be a part of the conversation.
Because, yeah, we have companies like Netflix picking up a few Nigerian and Ghananian movies/shows for streaming, unless you're searching for them or your algorithm is trained, you'll never find them.
Also, shout-out to Supa Team 4
Tumblr media
An upcoming CGI animated series from Zambia that is looking like a fusion of Miraculous and DC Super Hero Girls.
But, my rambling aside, for me there were three stand-outs from the anthology.
My favorite cultural-reflection, My favorite spectacle, and My Overall Favorite (kind of like a Best in Show).
My Favorite Cultural-Reflection
And by this, I mean which of the shorts reflected the culture it's creators are from the best (even though it may not have been my Overall Favorite):
Moremi (Nigeria)
Tumblr media
(Hate that I couldn't find a gif for this one...)
Before this series aired proper, If you showed me 15 seconds of each short and told me to identify which country they came from, with this one it would have been a no-brainer. The staging and composition are such a strong mirror to Nigerian storytelling, a facet that is made even more obvious when we're introduced to the scientist character.
My Favorite Spectacle
Mkhuzi: The Spirit Racer (South Africa)
Tumblr media
The sheer definition of 'Hype'. When I was liveblogging my first time watching some of the anthology, I made the comment 'Who at Triggerfish Studios marathoned Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill before coming into work that day?!' But, yes, this short was extremely anime, extremely colorful, and extremely action-packed. All while still having a message about maintaining the connection with your ancestors.
My Overall Favorite (Best in Show)
Enkai (Kenya)
Tumblr media
Everything about this short, the composition, the color-scheme, the acting, the setting, and the messages are beautiful. While the initial scenes give us the impression of a simple, more intimate story of a mother and daughter, as the story progresses, the audience is presented with themes of family, spirituality, environmentalism, and even a bit of generational trauma sprinkled in (if you know where to look).
In fact, I'm going to discuss the moment that solidified this short as Best in Show for me. Spoilers under the Read More
When Enkai and her mother finally escape the destroyed Earth and Enkai is showing the new world she's made, free of mankind's greed and destruction, her mother has a moment of hesitation and looks back towards the Earth.
Even though the Earth and it's people, the ones who she was trying so hard to protect, have hurt her so much, she still says, "...I can still fix this!"
And Enkai has to be the one to tell her mother, "If we didn't leave, we would never be free from them. They have to save themselves now."
As much as the environmentalist message is there, it also reflects a story of a woman being abused by her family, hurt by her family, and internalizing the fact that she has to stay; she has to take care of her loved ones, only finally being told by the next generation 'No, you have done enough! You have been hurt enough!'
I just... God, the beauty of African storytelling being presented in the medium of modern animation got to me, okay?

do you have diverse modern romance recs?
Yep! I've (mostly) organized it by author:
Naima Simone: I'm obsessed with literally everything this woman writes, both Harlequin and not Harlequin. Naima writes a lot of fabulous Black heroines (and she writes great body diversity as well) and a decent amount of POC heroes as well. My favorites include . Black Tie Billionaire (Black heroine, Asian hero), Secrets Of A One Night Stand (Black heroine, Pacific Islander hero), and Trust Fund Fiancé (both the hero and heroine are Black). The best thing about Naima's books is just the uniformity in how she writes every body type as attractive and desirable and the sex is very hot. Would absolutely recommend.
Katrina Jackson: I haven't talked about Katrina enough, when she's out here doing the most for mafia romances and spy romances with diverse characters. I could happily read her novella Beautiful & Dirty over and over, but it's a prequel to the mafia series which ends with my favorite, The Don, which has a Black heroine. Katrina also wrote a spy series (The Spies Who Loved Me!) and the first in that series, Pink Slip, has a Black heroine who's lusting over her married bosses (the wife, Monica, is Latina I believe) and surprise, they're both into her too.
Angelina M. Lopez: Angelina writes excellent Latino rep. Her fictional town Freedom, Kansas, which is the setting in multiple stories, has an amazing Mexican-American community she builds on. I'd recommend After Hours on Milagro Street, which has a Mexican-American heroine, as well as her upcoming Full Moon Over Freedom, which is next in the series. The way she melds culture, magic, and romance is gorgeous. Also! Lush Money, which is set within this universe, has a Latina heroine and is very fun and worth reading.
Tara Pammi: If you want to read about Indians in India or Bollywood-centric romances, Tara is the author. I liked Claiming His Bollywood Cinderella and The Secret She Kept in Bollywood (that man is suuuch a DILF he's great).
Jadesola James: I've talked about her before (see here) but Jadesola has written a couple Harlequin Presents stories set in Africa. I'd recommend The Royal Baby He Must Claim and The Princess He Must Marry, which are about sisters who are Nigerian princesses.
Talia Hibbert: The Brown Sisters books are bangers, sexy and emotionally comforting at the same time. I'd recommend all of them: Get a Life, Chloe Brown, Take a Hint, Dani Brown, and Act Your Age, Eve Brown. I also love her novella Guarding Temptation, which has both a Black hero and heroine and Wanna Bet? which has a Black heroine and a British-Indian hero (thanks for reminding me @viscountessevie).
Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai: The hero and heroine are in-laws (well, her husband, his brother, is dead) so the romance was very emotional and slow-burn, but the pay-off was absolutely worth it. The heroine Sadia is Pakistani-American, and the hero Jackson is of Japanese and Hawaiian ancestry. Alisha also delves pretty deep into South Asian family dynamics which hit a liiiittle too close to home, but I can't deny the accuracy.
Reel by Kennedy Ryan: This a romance between an actress and her director (both are Black) and I particularly appreciate the amount of research Kennedy Ryan put into the Harlem Renaissance, Black artists of that era (she created a fictional artist to base the movie off of), as well as their contributions to the Civil Rights movement which I think isn't discussed enough.
Sink or Swim by Tessa Bailey: See here.
From what I recall, Katee Robert did a pretty good job of body diversity without super explicitly mentioning race in her Fairytale Villains Who Fuck Wicked Villains series.

Regards, Loki - Chapter 33
Master List
Sigyn: I still can’t believe you insisted on paying for my dress.  It’s too much!
James laughed, glad he sent her to the best shop.  Misha really knew what she was doing.
Loki: I did it because I wanted to.
Sigyn: You have to let me pay you back.
Loki: It’s my treat.
Sigyn: But I have to do something!
Loki: If you really want to do something, you could send me some of those goodies you keep teasing me with.
Louisa laughed at his response.
Sigyn: That is something I can definitely do.  Have you found what you’re going to wear to the gala?
James took a deep breath.  The tailor he went to didn’t really understand the theme of the gala (as he had never seen the movie), but he took note of the description of the suit that was given and drew a sketch of it while he was there.  Once James approved, the tailor got to work, saying it would take him a week to get the base of it down.  James would need to come back to ensure the measurements were correct before he could finish it.
Loki: It’s coming along well.  I have a fantastic tailor.
Sigyn: That’s great!
Loki: Any hints as to what your dress looks like?
Louisa laughed.
Sigyn: You’ll just have to wait and see.
James laughed at her response.  He wasn’t really expecting her to tell him what the dress looked like and was content to wait until the night of the gala.  It wasn’t seeing her dress that he was anticipating either.  It was finally getting to meet her, the woman he’d fallen for over emails and texts.
Loki: That’s fair.
Sigyn: It’s not something I ever thought I’d get to wear.  It’s not like the dress in the movie.
Loki: It doesn’t have to be.  As long as you love it, that’s what matters.
Sigyn: It’s beautiful.  I’m afraid to even breathe near it.
Loki: I bet you’ll look stunning.
Sigyn: I hope so.  How are you holding up in the aftermath of what happened at your company?
James sighed.
Loki: It’s a mess.  I have a team helping to get things sorted out.  Legal finalized the charges.  With insurance and such, it could take months to get it all resolved, but the people on the team who are working on this are fantastic.  It’s made my life so much easier.
Sigyn: I’m so glad.  I know it’s taken a huge toll on you between that and your ex.  I wish there was something I could do to help.
Loki: You already are.  You’ve listened, provided advice, and you even sent me treats.  I couldn’t ask for better support.
He knew that wasn’t the entire truth.  He wanted more.  He wanted Sigyn there with him, holding him, consoling him, and just being there with him in person, but he couldn’t tell her that, at least not yet.
Sigyn: I feel like I could have or should be doing more.  You’ve got all that going on and you’ve been helping me on top of that with everything that’s happened to me.  To say you are a good man is an understatement.
He sighed.
Loki: I try, but I am very far from perfect.
Sigyn: No one’s perfect.  Absolutely no one.
Loki: I have a small thing I would like to confess.
Sigyn: What’s that?  You’re not about to tell me you're a Nigerian prince or something…..
James laughed at that remark.
Loki: No, darling.  I’m incredibly nervous that when we do meet that you’ll reject me.
Sigyn: You, sir, are a very stupid man.
Loki: Why do you say that?
Sigyn: I feel the issue is the opposite.  That you’ll see me and go running for the hills.
Loki: Somehow, I doubt that.
Sigyn: I’m also a very bad dancer.
Loki: Somehow, I doubt that as well, but we’ll manage.
Louisa was glad to know he had confidence in her dancing even though they’d yet to meet, but his response inferred that he could dance.  And if he could dance, then he should be able to lead her in a dance or two as long as she doesn’t trip and fall on her face.
Sigyn: Please just don’t let me fall on my face, not in front of everyone.
Loki: I will do my best.
Louisa started thinking again about the baker’s job at the cafe, and the nerves from it stacked on top of the anxiety of meeting Loki were becoming too much.
Sigyn: What if I fail?
Seeing the text, he knew this wasn’t about the gala.  She was an amazing baker, and he knew she’d quickly become popular.
Loki: But dear, what if you fly?
She knew he was right.  Before she could respond, her phone pinged again.
Loki: It’s okay to be nervous.  It’s a new adventure.  And personally?  I think you will excel more than you think you will.
Sigyn: You really think so?
Loki: I really do.
Taking a deep breath, she sent a message to Brad and Chad, asking if she could test out baking for their cafe to see how well it went.  Only seconds later did she receive an enthusiastic yes which helped her feel better.  Loki’s idea to do a test run rather than a full commitment was genius.
Even though it was late, she decided to bake at least one or two things to help calm her nerves.  Checking what she had in her cupboards, several things were pulled out, and the mixing began.  Two hours later, she had 1 ready with the other still in the oven.  As she was pulling the last pan out, there was a frantic knock at her door.  Once she put the pan down safely, she went to see who it was and found an extremely excited Chad.
“I’m so glad you said yes!!”
She chuckled.  “Technically I said yes to a test run.”
“That’s still a yes.”  His nose went up in the air.  “What are you working on?
She led him to the kitchen to find a few goodies, and Chad helped himself.  She didn’t even bother to try and stop him.  “I made those for your cafe.  Well, really, I made them to try to soothe my anxiety, but they’re also for you and Brad to put in the cafe if you want.”  He furiously nodded while stuffing his face.  “That is, if there’s any left for your customers.”
He looked up at her.  “Probably a good idea.”  He stopped eating the goodies.  “Cora told me you guys figured out the dress?”
She pulled out her phone and showed him a picture.  “They’re doing a couple of alterations, but it’ll be ready in time.”
“A fabulous dress for a fabulous lady!  I’m excited to see you in it.”  He hugged her.
“Oh!  Hall pass came in again today.  So yummy!”  Chad gave a wistful sigh.
“Was he with that lady again?”
He shook his head.  “Nope!  He looked pretty upset.  But even his upset face is hot.”  Chad used his hand to pretend to cool himself down.  “If things don’t work out between you and the god of mischief, we should set you up with hall pass because if I can’t have him, at least I can oggle him on a regular basis.

4, 5, and 14 for the new year’s asks? happy new year!
Movie of the year?
I didn't see that many movies this year---or at least not good movies---so this is a hard question to answer. I did like Mad God, which was trippy and horrible/beautiful, and I watched Thoroughbreds/Last Night in Soho back to back, which was a fun exercise in watching Anya Taylor-Joy's plastic alien face. (That's not a critique, I did enjoy it, she does have a face on the very edge of the uncanny valley.) However, I don't know if I have A Movie like I've had in previous years; nothing seems to stand out to me the way.
Maybe next year.
TV show of the year?
Unlike above, I have so, so many answers to this question! For those who have been around a while, you know Severance moved in and fully monopolized my brain---I still am on the strange corporate horror/occupational folklife kick it inspired in me. (I'm reading Thomas Ligotti's My Work Is Not Yet Done right now.)
But 2022 is also the year I discovered Three Busy Debras (surrealist, delightful) and cried my eyes out at Somebody Somewhere (lovely, big-hearted). I liked Bad Sisters a lot, and while I haven't really talked about it here (mostly because I don't feel like I have anything to add to the conversation) Interview with the Vampire was really, really good. It was a good year for television, and I had a good time watching it.
Favorite book you read this year?
I mean, I already wrote up a whole post about my favorite books of the year. However, I think of all those books, the one that made the biggest impact was Hadriana in All My Dreams. It's not a new book---it was published in 1988---but it still manages to feel like it, in a whirl of color, sensory detail, storytelling. It's a distillation of Haitian author René Depestre's négritude philosophy, and (at least for me) a link between other books I was reading at the time. (Fascinating to draw parallels between a Haitian book from the 80s and some of the Nigerian speculative fiction I was reading at the time...)
It's also a good book to read if you ever feel yourself reaching for your metaphorical pearls while reading. Hadriana is deeply focused and rooted in the erotic in a way I found refreshing; desire, bodies, and sex are discussed with matter-of-factness and clear-eyed interest, no shying away or pretending as though sex isn't a significant driver of behavior. Sometimes you just need to read about the long penis of a butterfly famous for deflowering virgins, and you remember that this too is a very natural part of human nature, and deserves to be in literature just as much as the rest.

Lionheart 🦁❤️
In Jane Bryce's "Signs of Femininity and Symptoms of Malaise: Contextualizing Figurations of 'Woman' in Nollywood", she discusses how the representations of women in Nigerian film are limited by the restraints of the patriarchy. She argues this problem is not specific to only Nigerian film, but rather representative of broader stereotypes of women's roles. Women in film tend to be represented as either power hungry rule breakers or submissive yet beautiful accessories. Media not only reflects society, but recreates and therefore enforces it. The movie Lionheart, by Genevivie Nnaji, reclaims this power of influence through developing complex female characters that symbolize more than the monstrous/perfect feminine. Ada, the main character, is determined to succeed in work, yet is not portrayed as overly aggressive. She is seen by her peers as respectable and ambitious, able to succeed both in work and in romance. Nnaji is able to portray Ada beyond feminine expectations, focusing on her career journey rather than her love life. This movie exemplifies the importance of female directors in creating media that will create and represent the nuances of womanhood.

Stuff about Tallulah
She's based on Belle from Beauty and the Beast hence the roses theme

Tally was originally going to be called Rose. Her other names were Tallylyn, & Bronwyn.
Tally was sent to MH incognito for her family friend but she fell in love with the school and a certain werewolf
Her least favorite instrument is the harp because of too many strings to memorize. She prefers simple instruments
Dislikes horror movies, she prefers softer fare

Little Book Review: Wahala
Author: Nikki May.
Publication Date: 2022.
Genre: Realistic fiction.
Premise: All well-heeled Anglo-Nigerian women living in London, Ronke, Simi, and Boo have been best friends since university. They each have their problems--Ronke is looking for love in all the wrong places, Simi is anxious about her career and the prospect of motherhood, and Boo feels restless with her husband and child--but they're doing pretty well until Simi's childhood friend Isobel arrives on the scene. Glamorous, charismatic, and the only child of a staggeringly wealthy man, Isobel sows chaos wherever she goes. Can these three friends survive her reign of glitzy terror?
Thoughts: There is a very specific kind of story that I love, which I'll call "Three Women, One Chaotic Bitch Friend." I only know three examples--this book, Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride, and the 1949 movie A Letter to Three Wives--but it's so special to me. In short, it's a story where there are three women who are friends. Each woman is successful in some areas of her life, but struggling in others, like most people. Then comes an exciting, beautiful woman who seems to have what each of the other three lack, or is otherwise able to exploit their deepest insecurities. I love this plot partly for the same reasons I love stuff like Stephen King's It; an entity dedicated to fucking with each character's personal baggage is a very striking way to reveal character. Also, it is very annoying as a woman to be taunted with images of perfection that aren't actually real or achievable, but are treated as such. Wahala is a compelling example of this kind of story, at turns frothy, funny, and lurid. May's writing is at its strongest when illustrating how the seemingly minor resentments of the heroines' lives add fuel to Isobel's campaign of destruction; the big reveals about Isobel's involvement in all their histories are less involving, although still entertaining.
Hot Goodreads Take: "Who wants to read nearly 400 pages of women being awful to each other, culminating in a horrible ending where a psychopathic narcissist wins and there is no justice or karma?" Me!!!!

my nigerian friend. Uhura is ugly in SNW. I grew up watching dark skin Genevieve Nnaji in movies be queen.
No snw uhura is not near as attractive. she is by Hollywood standard that the show is set in- ugly. this is the reason they chose her for uhura because the creators of the show knew audience will not want an ugly female character to be paired with spock. they made uhura ugly so she will not be a threat to chapel.
If you ship spock/uhura, do you think it is a coincidence that uhura just happens to be ugly and looks like a dude when the show is doing a spock/chapel romance?
Black women, we have been so beat down by society that we delude ourselves into now thinking all black women are equals in everything. well no. the truth is there are black girls who are prettier and have more sex appeal than other black girls and SNW should have cast a very beautiful black girl in the role. Celia is not one. the pictures dont lie.
This is an ugly black girl and it is not because she is dark skin.

This is so bizarre - my comment wasn’t me saying she’s beautiful BECAUSE she’s dark skinned but that I personally think she’s beautiful - I find all the images of her you attached to be beautiful - and I don’t view the presence of the male gaze within a character to be a necessity for a love interest.
Also Nyota is much younger in this timeline. A he’s basically a fresh out of school intern. Why should the focus be on establishing her sex appeal when we’re spending this time establishing her personhood? Regardless of my love for Spock/Uhura, as an Uhura fan, I’d rather see an Uhura that gets to fully realize being a driving character than have an endgame ship where Uhura is relegated to the side AGAIN.
Honestly though, if you don’t understand how “ugly” is a wholly subjective assertion and that there’s more to a character than perceived attractiveness, I don’t need to waste time talking to you any further than this.
Stay bitter though.
