- Summary: Nick is reading a bedtime story for your kids
Y/N POV
“Daddy, will you read us an bedtime story.” Nick Jr asked his father, both of our children looking at him with puppy eyes. “Come daddy, read them a story.” I teased him while the children thinking I am on their side. He looked at me with a small smile on his face. “ I don’t know.” He folded his arms together. “Mommy please tell daddy to read us a story.” They both pleading on the ground, trying to win him over. “Look at them, just read them a story.” He signs loudly. “Okay one story.” They both jumped up in joy. “Come on then.” He walked with them to their room. I heard him reading a story, a story what he made up. “But what did he do daddy.” “He went to sleep.” “And then?” “He dreamed about fun things.” “And then?” He signs, I laughed at their responses. “But daddy the story is not over yet.” “I will tell you the rest tomorrow.” “But I wanna hear it now.” “No… now it’s time for you two to sleep.” “But I don’t want to.” I walked up to their room, Nick was sitting on juniors bed. “But daddy is tired.” I softly said. They looked at me. “Daddy wants to go sleeping, and that means you two have to sleep as well, other wise daddy can’t.” They looked at him with big eyes. “Then we go sleeping for daddy.” Junior throws a blanket at his younger brother Lando. “We need to sleep now, other wise daddy can’t.” I smiled at Nick, he carefully stands up, kissing their heads. “Good night.” “Good night daddy.” They both said. Nick walks out of the room. Lando held his arms up. “Mommy…” I walked to him and sat down on his bed. “Yes darling.” “Does daddy really likes us?” “What do you mean darling.” I gently rubbed through his hair. “He doesn’t like to read a bedtime story, or play with our toys, he’s always away.” Lando had glossy eyes, and this made me feel bad, almost breaking my heart, that they thought Nick doesn’t care about them. “Baby, do you really feel like that?” He nods. Junior crawls over. “But he does love us right mommy?” Junior asked with hope in his eyes. “ of course he love you. He loves both of you.” I poked in their tummy, causing them to giggle. “Daddy is a little bit sick, making him sleepy, and that’s why he doesn’t want to play with the toys or anything else, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care, he cares a lot.” They both snuggled against me. “Will he be better soon?” Junior asked “I don’t know, but he is trying to be.” “I love daddy.” Lando said while hugging his plushy close to him. “Me too.” Junior said. I smiled at them. “So to help daddy, he needs both of you to listen very good to mommy, be nice to each other and go to bed when he asked both of you to do that.” They nodding their heads. “So now we are going to sleep.” I carefully stood up. I tucked in Lando first and leaving a kiss on his head. Junior crawled back to his bed, waiting for me. I walked over and tucked him in and placed a kiss on his forehead. “Good night.” “Good night mommy.” I switch the lights off and closed the door.
“I heard everything.” Nick said while sitting on the edge of our bed. “Darling…” I walked up to him and hugged him, his arms wrapping around me. “They think i don’t love them, I’m a terrible father and husband.” I shook my head. “No your not, they understand, they still love you.” “I’m never around, even if I am here I’m not there for them or for you.” I gently grabbed his face. “Nick, I knew when I met you that it wasn’t going to be easy, but I still love you, they love you.” I traced along his face, smiling at him. “Your not a terrible husband or father.” He smiles at me. “I’m so lucky to have you.” He placed a kiss on my lips. “No I am lucky to have you.” He smiles as he gently pushes my hair out of my face. “But I’m still waiting for a bedtime story, daddy.” He started to smirk. “Oh you still want a bedtime story from Daddy?” I nod biting on my lip. “Baby, I have a few stories I wanna share with you.” He grabs me by my hips and pulls me up in bed. “Tell me, I have the whole night.” He laughs and placed kisses along my neck. “Let’s give you some stories then.”

Halloween Day 5
I smiled as I finished up my knitting setting my yawn and needles on my bedside table as Simon finished washing up ready for bed, he happily climbed in beside me getting cosy in our sweet cotton covers wrapping his arms around me "Ummm hello my beautiful wife" he Cooes trying to give me kisses "Hello Simon, they in bed?" "All tucked in bed with blankets and bears and I even have them a story" "Aww that's nice Simon, they love a good story" I smiled "They do, so... As the kiddies are nice and cosy hows about you and I? Get a little cosy?" "Oh? Just cosy Simon?" "Well, Mimi is three now, and wants her own big bed so maybe... Someone else could go in the crib?" "Oh?" I glared "Maybe time for... Baby number nine?" He suggested stroking my stomach "I'll consider it Simon" I laughed "come on to bed we have a busy day tomorrow" "I was more thinking we could get to the busyness now?" He smirked "Your not going to give up on this are you?" "I am not" "Alright" "Ummm come here my beautiful wife" he smirked crawling ontop of me peppering me with kisses I heard the bedroom doors signature creek so I pushed him off me onto his side and he immediately noticed too "Hello Edgar" I smiled to the small blonde boy in our doorway his plush raven in hand "what's the matter?" "I had a nightmare" "Oh noo you poor thing" Simon cooed "Come on then you can stay with us tonight" I smiled Simon gave me a look but I ignored him helping edgar up into our bed to sleep with us tucking the covers around him and giving his little head a kiss "Sleep tight sweetie" I smiled tapping his nose and he happy began to drift off "But y/n" Simon whined in my ear still trying to snuggle me "No, go to sleep Simon maybe tomorrow" I answered as hushed as I could "But -" "Simon no. Not happening" "We'll be quiet" "Edgar is in bed with us" "Fine." He sighed I smiled and moved to lay cuddled on his chest "can't be trying for more babies if you can't deal with the ones we have Simon" "I know, sorry I just get excited" he answered so I smiled and gave him a kiss just then we headed the door creek again so I turned and we saw little lillibeth with Mimi in her arms "Hey girls, what's the matter?" "We can't sleep" they whined "we had a nightmare" "Oh... Okay you can come sleep with us too" Simon sighed a little reluctantly but they both climbed in finding spots to snuggle in our bed giving us not much room for ourselves "Alright sleep tight girls" I smiled patting their hair and trying to get some sleep but only a minute or two later the door creeked again revealing the triplets Harry, Peter and Warren all grumpy and with little tears "Bad dream?" Simon asked and they all nodded "okay" he sighed opening the covers so they happily ran in finding space for themselves leaving me and Simon in a small sliver down his side of the bed so much so we had to cuddle just for space alone the bed a mess of plushies limbs and blankets where everyone battled for space "come in let's try and get some sleep" he says so we cuddled up close and shared a kiss before trying to drift away but I heard the door again seeing the twins Maggie and Marcy with their bears "We had a bad dream!" They cried "Join the bed" Simon sighed and of course they ran over taking even more space taking our little sliver leaving us in the middle of the mess of children "Simon?" "Yes?" "What bedtime story did you tell them?" "Why?" "They all have nightmares what story did you tell them?" "....." "Simon" "The witches" "Simon!" "Kids like spooky stories, plus I was trying to get them all to sleep early so we could... Snuggle" "That backfired" "It did. Maybe the witches who come in though the cracks in windows to steal children who are up past their bedtime to make children soup was a bad idea" "You think?" I glared "The witches are gonna eat me!" Simon jr yelled as he ran in and into the bed between us which of course woke all the children up and all began crying "The witches!" "Their here!" "Their gonna eat us!" "They wanna boil our toes!" Eventually after a good while we got them all to settle down and got them all to sleep even if the bed was a mess of child limbs and fights for coverage of blankets Simon jr even between us with his teddy bear "You are not on bedtime story duty again. Ever." I sighed "Fair enough" he nods

How about daisy is in kindergarten and some kid is making fun of her cause her dad is a plastic surgeon which technically doesn’t count as a real doctor (his words)

Y/N was laid in bed, sick with a cold she had gotten from her one year old daughter who had seemingly gotten better the second she passed it on. She was in their shared bedroom, covered with all the fleece blankets she could find, with a hot water bottle near her head. Steve had been taking care of her, taking some time off work to ensure she wouldn't attempt to do things by herself. Last time, she had fainted in the kitchen after continuing to work while sick with the flu; so this time, Steve was home.
     - You won't forget to pick Daisy from daycare?
     - No, my love. - he kissed her forehead. - I'll pick up Daisy and we'll bring some takeout.
     - Can I go?
     - No. You'll stay here so you can go better and we can get to our romantic weekend away. - he caressed her cheek. - It'll be okay. You'll see your baby in a bit.
She cuddled against him until he had to go and pick up Daisy. None of them were really happy with her getting into daycare this early but after Y/N's maternity leave, the two couldn't spend enough time to look after her full time. She liked daycare, but the two of them were still suspicious of it. He drove down to the incredibly expensive daycare, getting out of his car to wait for the doors to open. Once it did, most kids came out running, some of them barely knowing how to walk but still running towards their parents. However, Daisy was nowhere to be found. Instead, her head teacher walked out, Daisy holding her hand and looking down. Steve frowned, squatting down to her height and opening his arms. She ran into his hug, her head burying in his jumper.
    - What's wrong, Daisy bun? - he cooed, kissing the top of her head.
    - Daisy had a tough day. - the headteacher said. - One of the boys was being mean to her but she took it like a big girl. Just needs some cuddles from mummy and daddy.
    - Come here, my perfect girl. - Steve kissed her cheek. - We’re gonna go home now, okay? You’re safe. Can you repeat that?
     - I’m safe. - she babbled, hugging her dad once more.
Of course Steve was upset. He hated when any of his girls were sad and he specially hated when his Daisy was upset over things he couldn’t immediately solve. He strapped her on her car seat, brushing her hair aside to kiss her forehead again before moving to the driver’s seat.
     - Why was he being mean to you, Daisy love?
     - He was being mean to you, daddy. - she played with the toy Y/N had wrapped around her seat belt, a little yellow duck which matched the one plushie she had in her bed.
     - How so?
     - He said you’re not a real doctor. -  maybe the kid was learning from his wife who too liked to say he wasn’t a real doctor. - I said that’s not true.
     - Aw, baby, who cares what they think.
     - He said his mummy said plastic surgeons aren’t doctors.
     - Maybe his mummy needs a plastic surgeon. - he mumbled more to himself than to his daughter. - He’s wrong, Daisy love. I don’t want you getting upset over daddy.
     - But I wanna protect daddy.
     - I know, bun and daddy is really happy that you wanna protect him.
They drove down to their favourite takeout place and Steve even let her pick those awfully sugary bunny cookies that she liked. Usually he wouldn’t tempt the wrath of Y/N with sweets before bedtime, but he wanted to pamper his little girl. She walked back to the car with the bag of cookies happily and even made a little song for them during the ride back home. Once back home, she put her cookies down and ran towards her mother’s bedroom. Steve followed with a silly smile on his face, leaning by the door frame to see Daisy struggle yet achieve to get on top of her bed and hugging her mum. Y/N mumbling something, followed by a little smile before filling her cheeks with kisses. He could almost melt, seeing the two girls of his life cuddling one another.
     - We got your favourite food, mummy and daddy let me get bunny cookies.
     - Did he now? - she looked up at Steve who shrugged.
     - She was a very brave girl today. - he walked up to them, sitting on his side of the bed.
     - I was, I defended daddy. Jeremy said daddy wasn’t a doctor but I said he was.
     - Daddy is a doctor. - Y/N replied.
     - Just like you mummy!
     - No, not just like me. - she caressed her cheek. - You see, baby, when someone becomes really really good at something, they can study and become doctors. Daddy is a doctor which takes care of something while mummy is a doctor of science.
      - I wanna take care of people and science!
      - You can do whatever you want, Daisy bun.

Dad!Sirius
little blurbs about sirius being the best dad ever. Also includes some sirius X reader, Marauders.
Babysitters
Atlas loves when Lily babysits them. He is just smitten with her and he especially likes her hair. She’ll hold him and he would just stare at her with awe. He would pull a little on her hair and would get pouty when told off for it, especially from James. He isn’t a fan of James' because he always takes Lily away from him at the end of the day and he doesn't like that, but eventually he’d grow to like him... a little.
Neo on the other hand enjoys hanging out with James. She follows him everywhere and wants to be with him when he does random things, she is like his little shadow. She gets pouty if she doesn’t get to play with his glasses and he always tells her to be careful with them so as to not break them. She has an attitude, she rolls her eyes at him. “Well… she's a pads kid alright!” he’d joke. To which she responds with an excited “Padtoot!” and laugh while running away with James' glasses to get her dog plushy.
Remus is however Neo's favorite babysitter and for one reason only. He has a beard and she loves beards and just wants to grab at them. Luckily both Sirius and Remus keep their beards trimmed short so there isn’t much for her to grab. Sirius did the prank on her where he hid the lower part of his face behind a towel, then when he revealed his clean shaven face, Neo was SO upset she wouldn’t stop crying. Whenever she saw him until his beard grew back she’d cry at the sight of him. When he finally had his beard back she had missed him so much. She’d have a similar reaction to remus shaving but milder. Neo loves hanging out with her uncles but daddy is still the best. Remus and Atlas get along great, atlas loves to sit in uncle Remy's lap while he reads, and most of the time he falls asleep, Atlas is a very cuddly and sleepy boy so it works out well.
Regulus is a decent babysitter but confuses the twins slightly when they are very young for the simple reason that he looks similar to their dad. Before they eventually learn the difference, he would be kind of an ‘imposter Sirius’ because they are aware that isn’t dad…. But he really looks like dad….
Bath time!
Both Neo and Atlas LOVE bath time, especially with their dad. They both just can’t stop laughing when Sirius makes himself a bubble beard and causes bubbles to fly everywhere when he talks. He’d create fun narratives with pirates and priateship and sea monsters.
The only thing Atlas doesn’t like about bath time is washing his hair, he cries so much because he doesn’t like getting shampoo in his eyes or when water runs down his face. Luckily Sirius is super gentle with him and makes sure he feels safe the whole time.
“Close your eyes” the little boy does as his father says and shuts his eyes really hard. Sirius puts some shampoo in his palm and rubs his hands together before massaging it into the boy’s hair. Atlas starts whining a little bit. “It’s alright buddy” sirius comforts. When it’s time to wash the shampoo out he gets pouty again. Sirius tells Atlas to lean his head back while he supports the little boy’s back with his hand.
“Are you keeping ‘em closed?”. Atlas nods and again focuses on keeping his eyes shut as hard as he can. “Here comes the water,” Sirius warns. He would never do anything to break his son’s trust, especially not for a laugh. All three of them sing a song together, usually some type of nursery rhyme, to help distract the little scared boy from the water.
Neo was easier to handle albeit a bit wild. She loved singing the song whilst water was running down her face and it sounded like she was underwater. She’d laugh a lot and then accidentally breath in some water. She’d be upset for a moment and cough a bit but in no time she’s singing happily again. Sirius often found himself singing nursery rhymes in the shower when he would wash his own hair, just a weird habit he had when the kids were little.
After bath time he would help them into their cute little bathrobes and then the two kids would run to their mama looking like little jawas. Sirius would join them moments later, clothes splashed with bathwater and bubbles still in his beard. He didn’t mind though.
Bedtime
Sirius would teach them to brush their teeth by themself as soon as possible. He would seat them on the bathroom counter, give them their little toothbrushes and portion out the tooth paste. Neo was the most troublesome in this area, she didn’t like brushing her teeth so he’d tell her an elaborate story of why she needs to brush her teeth. Unfortunately she didn’t believe him. Atlas did though and always pointed out that they need to brush their teeth every morning and evening like the sweet boy he is. Because of Neo's brother pestering her with the importance of brushing her teeth she’d do it. So it worked out for Sirius eventually… in a roundabout way.
After all the teeth had been brushed, including Sirius’, he set them back down on the floor and the twins rushed as fast as their little legs could carry them to their shared bedroom. Atlas would get his blankie and his deer plush that he got from auntie Lils when he was born. Neo would get a book and her very loved dog plushy also called padfoot or as she ‘padtoot’. They would wait for Sirius to join them and he would take a seat in the armchair they had in their little room, he would place the twins in his lap and they would get comfortable. Atlas would share his blankie and they would place their plushies in their laps getting ready for the bedtime story.
Sirius would read to them and also educate them on different topics, making the twins question what happened in the story and why. While also keeping it lighthearted and fun. He’d give the characters different voices, some were funny and some were silly. After they finished the story they would beg him to read another one and it would break his heart telling them no, but he knew they were exhausted and needed their sleep. “There will be another story tomorrow”
Puting Atlas to sleep was the easiest thing in the world. As soon as his head hit the pillow he would be asleep, holding onto his blankie and his plush. Sirius would pull the covers up and lovingly caress the boy’s cheek and place a kiss on his forehead wishing him goodnight.
Neo was more troublesome, she wanted Sirius to stay with her until she fell asleep. He’d tuck her in, kiss her forehead and also give ‘padtoot’ a goodnight kiss. Then he’d sit on the floor by her bed and caress her cheek til she fell asleep. Sometimes he’d fall asleep on the floor leaning onto the side of her bed.
Food habits
Atlas is a picky eater, veggies are his number one enemy and he’ll do anything to not eat them. Sirius understands this because he himself hated veggies when he was little although his punishments for not eating them was very uncalled for. It takes a lot of coaxing to get atlas to eat them and he is always the last one at the table. Sirius has tried everything but it's still a struggle.
“Just eat 3 more broccolis and a cauliflower, then you can go play” Sirius tried to convince the boy but he just shook his head and scrunched up his face in disgust. He couldn’t help but sigh at the cute but stubborn little boy. “Eat two and then we’ll go play afterwards, okay buddy?” Sirius tried to bargain. He saw a glimmer in the boy's eyes.
“You play too?” he asked hopefully and Sirius nodded. Atlas unwillingly picked up the fork and poked at the veggies. After a while he picked out the two smallest veggies and ate them one at a time. “Done!” he declared after forcing them down. Atlas slipped off the chair and rushed to join his siblings.
“Daddy will play with us” he cheered happily, veggies long forgotten. They spent most of the afternoon playing hide and seek. Atlas was the first to get tired and decided to hide under the covers in his parents bed. As he crawled under the covers Neo and Zagreus noticed his genius hiding spot and went to join him.
“Here I come!” Sirius called out as he began looking around the house. Not finding them in the usual hiding spots he began to feel worried even though they couldn’t possibly have left the house. When he passed the master bedroom he noticed 3 child sized lumps in his and his wife's bed. As he got closer he could hear some giggling. He carefully peeled up the covers to peek inside to see his pups. “I found you” he chuckled as he began scooping them up in his arms as they laughed and giggled happily.
When Y/N came home later that afternoon the house was quiet. The plates and cutlery, long forgotten on the kitchen table much to her annoyance. However, the sight she was greeted with in her bedroom of her husband and three little children sleeping together in a pile on the bed, tangled up in the covers and blankets. It was enough for her heart to swell with love.
Neo generally isn't a picky eater, she eats well and healthy meals. She does however love ice cream though. the strawberry, vanilla and chocolate mix also known as neapolitan ice cream. Neo is a tough girl to bargain with as she’s not as easily fooled as other children, but ice cream is her weakness and Sirius does occasionally use that to his advantage.
“Neo, sweetie. Please it’s time to sleep,” Sirius would almost beg as he was seated beside her bed on the floor, being as tired as he wished his daughter was.
“No.” Neo said stubbornly and crossed her arms over the covers. Sirius had tucked the children into bed almost half an hour ago and both boys were fast asleep and sailing off to dreamland. “I don’t want you to leave me daddy” she sniffled and her eyes were glossy with tears. Overwhelmed by emotions she suddenly sat up and threw her little arms around her fathers neck, holding him tight. His arm wrapped around her little body and he caressed the back of her little head with his free hand. He remembered feeling a similar feeling when he was very little. When his mother seemed to love him.
“Of course I won't leave you, puppy.” he said comfortingly as his heart ached in his chest. Neo pulled back to look at him, tears running down her chubby little cheeks. her hands still on his shoulders and her fingers played with his long dark hair.
“Promise me daddy” she demanded with another sniffle. Her words tore him apart within.
“I won’t leave you, ever.” he promised. He knew it was a lie, that one day he would have to leave her alone on this earth, even though it seemed far til then. He dried the tears from her cheeks and kissed her forehead. “Now go to sleep sweetie”
“Only if I get ice cream for breakfast” she argued back with a little giggle as he crawled back under the covers. Sirius tucked her into bed once again.
“Not for breakfast, but sometime tomorrow we can have ice cream, okay?” he said and poked her nose gently and giggled along with her. She lifted her little hand and held out her pinky.
“And strawberries” she said as Sirius wrapped his larger pinky around her little one. It wasn’t strawberry season, Neo knew that but she cleverly made him promise her to get her favourite fruit too. He couldn’t simply go back on a pinky swear.
“And strawberries,” Sirius sighed with a smile on his lips. His little girl was so clever, he knew he got it from her mother but the way she used it, that was all him.
Zagreus eats pretty much anything even if he doesn't like it. He accidentally took a bite of a bar of soap once. It was shaped as a cinnamon bun and the poor boy thought it was real.
“Dad?” he said as he pulled on his fathers sleeve. The potters were over for dinner and Sirius was out on the porch chatting with James over a cold beer.
“What is it boy?” he said and crouched down to the little boy's level. The boy looked puzzled and showed his father the cinnamon bun soap with a child sized bit in it.
“This bun tastes weird, dad.” James couldn’t hold back his laughter.
“Ah, oh it’s not a cinnamon bun, boy” sirius tried to explain but the boy looked at the bun soap and up at his father again convinced that his father was indeed mad. Sirius couldn’t hold back a chuckle “It’s soap.. In the shape of a bun”
“Oh…” Zagreus said finally trying to make sense of his odd food experience. Sirius ruffled the boy's hair. “Here” the boy said and gave Sirius the bun and then wandered off back into the house.
On Sundays it's always pancake or waffle Sunday at the Black’s house and the pups demand having their favorite fruit as a side. Atlas does a lot better with fruits and Sirius takes whatever wins he can get with the boy honestly. Blueberries are Atlas’ favourite fruit or well berry. However he doesn’t like fake fruit flavours in fact he hates them almost as much as he hates his sworn enemy... veggies.
Neo of course enjoys the sweet strawberries and often gets her way which means ice cream instead of whipped cream.
Zagreus loves pomegranates which doesn’t really go well with either pancakes or waffles but he is determined to have it anyway.

lost time
pairings: colin zabel x reader
warnings: mentions of food, awkward mare lol
word count: 1834
note: because colin is alive and well, watching marvel movies with you and reggie <3
a soft graze upon your forehead caused you to stir a bit from the slumber you were in. eyes blurred and mind still disoriented, you let out a puzzled hum.
colin sighed, his hopes of not waking you up went down low as you rubbed the somnolence away with your hand.
“go back to sleep, sweetheart,” he whispered, caressing your hair.
“work?” you mumbled, forcing back a yawn.
colin hummed, making you frown. as much as you loved seeing your husband at the peak of his career, all of his hard work finally paying off- making him one of the infamous detectives in pennsylvania, it didn’t mean you never longed to have his presence around more.
“can’t you have a day off? just f’today?” you asked, words slurring with sleep, “reggie and i missed you, colin.”
colin’s heart sank. he knew he was spending too much time at work again, only seeing you and his son whenever he comes home late from work, reggie asleep in his bed and you passed out on the living room from waiting up for him, or in the early morning before he goes to work.
“i’ll see what i can do, alright? mare and i have had plenty of information now and we’re so close to solving this case,” colin said, he paused for a bit to think, “but hey, i promise i’ll be home early today for some dinner date with you and reggie, maybe watch some movies if we have some time, is that fine?”
you mustered up a small smile, “sounds perfect, detective,” you leaned up to kiss him on the lips, “now go to work, we’ll see you later.”
with one last kiss on the forehead, colin brought the blankets up to your shoulders and left the room, going into the next one to take a peek at his son.
“mumma, where’s dad?” reggie, your three-year-old son, asked for the umpteenth time. dinner was ready; table mats and plates arranged, the cooked food you spent hours upon making served in your delicate chinawares, and chosen movies fiddled in the hands of your son.
before you could even answer him, the front door jingled, alongside the voice of your husband. you grinned at reggie and exclaimed, “oh- hey, see, daddy’s home!”
you turned back around to make sure everything was in order as your son waddled across the room and into the arms of his father, “hi there, li’l buddy!”
although when you pivoted around, the sudden arrival of another guest surprised you to the limit. mare sheehan, colin’s partner, was standing beside him, taking in the sight of your humble abode.
“oh,”
colin turned his gaze away from his son and to you. usually, the sight of you in his clothes, dinner ready, and soft music playing would have made him more laid back than he was at work, but seeing your hurt expression, dinner ready, and his son still awake, he knew he messed up.
he carefully placed his son back down, letting him shuffle back towards you, “y/n, i- work just caught up, and chief- chief said we have to- and we needed to talk- talk about the case, and i forg-”
pushing aside his stuttering excuse, you forced out a smile and looked at mare, who was just standing there awkwardly, “mare, hey,”
“hey, y/n,” she sent you a tight-lipped smile.
you grabbed reggie and placed him up in his high chair, “c’mon, dinner.”
colin stepped forward and tried to make you look at him, “y/n, i-”
you looked at him with a blank face and replied sternly, “sit down and eat, zabel,”
dinner was awkward and tense, to say the least. colin and mare were exchanging information and questions about the case whilst you were glaring at your husband every once in a while, feeding your son amidst the clattering of utensils and chatter.
there was a moment where silence filled up the room, the discussion of the case long over.
“delicious dinner you made, y/n,” mare cleared her throat, trying to diminish the awkward silence.
“yeah, dinner’s amazing, sweetheart.” colin agreed, trying to get to your best side by complimenting your cooking skills. he wasn’t lying though, it did taste immaculate.
“thanks, mare,” you replied, looking up for a second to acknowledge her, and only giving colin a side-eye.
you were still upset.
“auntie mare, you have cool nerf guns at work?” reggie asked, shaping his mashed potato into a small mountain.
mare blinked, looking between your son and you, “uh, yeah.”
“that’s cool!” reggie’s eyes widened in stupefaction, “you catch bad people like dad, too, auntie?”
mare hummed, sipping on the half-empty beer in her hand.
he whispered a small wow, before talking once more, doing an excellent job of clearing the aura of the room, “like spiderman? spiderman catch bad people, too, auntie! like a superhero,”
“mommy doesn’t catch bad people but she’s my fav’rite superhero.” reggie bragged, beaming at you as you wiped the potato off the corner of his mouth.
as your look softened, you kissed the nose of your son, “thanks, baby. that’s very sweet of you,”
colin smiled, slightly feeling bad for spending less time with his family. he knew that the case they’re working on is important, but he vowed that family always goes first and disregarded that- resulting in you and reggie missing him and colin forgetting that he has a family that he goes back home to.
smiling once more, you stood up, “c’mon, now, say goodnight to auntie mare, alright? we’ll get ready for bed and i’ll read you your favorite bedtime story, ‘kay?”
“but you said we’ll watch spiderman with daddy tonight,” he pouted, arms crossing as he slouched back on his chair.
you sighed, “i know i did, reggie, but daddy has some work to do. he needs to talk about catching the bad guys with auntie mare.”
“okay…” he frowned, raising his arms so that you could get him out of his chair, “good night, auntie mare and daddy.” you nodded politely to mare as you prepared your son for bed.
once he and mare finished off their deliberation on the case, colin got ready for bed and walked into your shared bedroom. seeing you curled up on your side, and asleep, colin sighed.
he never liked sleeping when he knows that you’re both going to bed with a heavy heart. the both of you always fixed things through before heading to bed. ending the night with soft kisses and cuddles.
but that wasn’t the case this time, so he got in under the comforters and turned off the lamp, debating whether or not he should wrap his arm around you.
deciding against it, he kissed your forehead instead and turned to face the other side.
reggie’s eyes slowly fluttered open, it was still dark outside. you promised that the three of you will be spending time together to watch spiderman once his dad got home, but reggie was too avid.
rubbing his eyes, he grabbed his plushie and opened the door of his bedroom, slowly waddling his way to your bedroom, whispering to himself to be careful not to hit anything.
a careful shake on colin’s arm woke him up, he let out a confused groan before begrudgingly opening his eyes.
“reggie? what’cha doin’ up, buddy?” he croaked out, rubbing his face in disarray. his gaze fell onto the clock, 02:34 am.
reggie slowly climbed onto the bed and colin opened his arms to bring him in, “just missed you so much, dad,”
colin’s heart ached. he carefully brought his son in the middle of the bed and let him cuddle further into his hug.
“mommy and i watch superhero movies, but i miss when you copy them in silly voices,” reggie mumbled, slowly feeling the sleepiness take over once more.
“‘m sorry, reggie, i’ll make it up to you and mommy tomorrow, okay?” said colin, he kissed his forehead and rubbed soothing caresses on his head to lull him back to sleep.
the chirping of the birds and the blinding light of the sun seeping through the window served as your wake-up call.
slightly turning around in bed, you sighed as you didn’t see colin in bed anymore. you didn’t know what to expect, of course he’d go back to work.
when you fully turned, you were confused to see reggie sleeping peacefully beside you, arms securely wrapped around his spiderman plushie.
you were about to stand up and make some breakfast when the door suddenly opened. the sight you’re suddenly seeing made you double-take, making sure that you weren’t dreaming.
colin carefully kicked the door a little wider, trying to balance the tray in his hands. when he looked up, he saw that you’ve already woken up, a dazed look on your face.
he smiled, “hey, you’re up. just in time for some breakfast in bed,”
“i thought you were at work,” you sat up, leaning against the headboard.
“made some calls with the chief a while ago, gave me the rest of the week off,” he said, he lowered the food tray on the bedside table and made his way towards reggie.
“reggie?” colin whispered, shaking the little boy a bit to wake him up, “reggie, wake up, buddy,”
he stirred a bit, whining at the sudden disturbance of his sleep.
“reggie, wakey-wakey,” he cooed, running a hand through his son’s hair, “hey, look. i made breakfast, we can watch a movie while eating like i promised, remember?”
“daddy?” he whispered, rubbing his eyes in an attempt to wake up.
“yeah, c’mon, sit up,” colin raised him slowly, resting him beside your arms, “there we go, now…”
“for breakfast,” he grinned, grabbing the tray and placing it on your lap. he grabbed reggie’s sippy cup, containing his favorite hot chocolate.
“choc’late?” reggie beamed, placing a hold on the bottle to warm his hands up.
“yeah! now, scootch over, we’ll eat together.”
glancing over your husband, a ghost of a smile appeared on your lips. you watched as your two favorite boys interacted, making up for lost time.
as reggie munched on his pancakes, a marvel movie playing on the television, colin sipped on his coffee and turned to look at you.
feeling the weight of his stare, you shifted your gaze away from the movie and stared right back, “what is it?”
he sighed, running a hand through his messy hair, “it’s just- i’m sorry, y/n. i know i haven’t been around much, spending too much time at work and little time with you guys. i just wanted to make it up to both of you.”
you smiled softly, placing your cup down, and leaned a bit to kiss his cheek, “s’alright, colin. you’re here now, and that’s what matters.”
grinning widely, the both of you turned your attention back to your son who’s babbling about how pepper potts and tony stark are like his parents.

🧸 and 📚 for apple?
🧸 - A soft plushie
📚 - A bedtime story
Totally dropped off the face of the Earth yesterday aside for a few likes. XD Sorry about that!
Anyway, it’s a long boi, and it’s also the first real piece I’ve written about Apple’s time with Jimmy! Therefore, I’m taggin’!
CW: Broken whumpee, clueless caretaker, clueless whumpee, crying, implied past abuse, lack of boundaries, mentioned temper tantrum, pet whump, referenced past neglect, starvation mention, Stockholm Syndrome, whipping mention
Tagging: @happy-whumper, @milk-carton-whump, @sideblogformindtrash, @whumperfulart, @unicornscotty
(I lost my list, so if you want to be tagged or if I forgot to tag you, please let me know!)
Sweet Dreams Are Made of This
A week in and Jimmy’s feeling pretty terrible at this whole caretaking thing. He shouldn’t have said it. He thought he was helping.
He shouldn’t have told Apple that Clay didn’t have his best interests at heart.
The tantrum lasted an hour, and after he exhausted himself, Apple stormed into the living room and hid beside the couch. Not even the bedroom he painstakingly prepared for him, Jimmy thinks exhaustedly.
But that’s not really important. At this rate, Apple’s never going to warm up to him. He needs to do something to gain his trust. Not that he’s exactly sure what that would entail. Words won’t be enough. Apple’s still terrified of him. Pissed at him now, too. So…
“Apple?” Jimmy hears a sniffle from behind the arm of the couch. “Listen, I… I have to go to the store real quick. I need you to stay here.” He would bring him, but he doesn’t think he’d be able to handle a busy supermarket so soon after, well, everything.
“I’m not expecting any company, so.” Jimmy shrugs on his coat. “So don’t open the door for anyone. Just… if anyone knocks, ignore them.”
His keys, his keys… There they are. Jimmy scoops up his wallet and keys and unlocks the door.
“Keep this door locked when I leave, Apple. That’s…” Jimmy sighs and braces himself. “That’s a command. Stay here, okay?”
He knew what to expect when he used that tone, but it still stings when Apple replies, “Yes, Master Jimmy.”
He nods to himself. “Good. I’ll be back soon.” Then he walks out, closing the door behind him.
***
The moment the door closes, Apple rushes to the door on unsteady legs, unlocks it, and wraps his hand around the doorknob. Just a few minutes. Three, tops. Three minutes until he rips the door open and runs back to Master Clay.
Master Jimmy doesn’t know what he was talking about. No, not Master Jimmy. Just Jimmy, because Master Clay is still his owner no matter what he says.
Apple puts his ear to the door and listens to Jimmy’s receding footsteps. Around the doorknob, his fingers shake. What if Master Clay doesn’t take him back? Apple was bad. No, he was horrible. He left. He left Master Clay. Why did he do that?!
Because Benji told him to—begged him to. They made him promise he would run and never come back.
Apple….he has to keep that promise.
This, this whole staying with Jimmy, it’s temporary. Temporary Master Jimmy. Temporary until Apple can find a way to get back to Master Clay without breaking his promise.
Apple can do that, but until then, he has to wait. So he lets go of the doorknob, flicks the lock closed, and he stays.
Less than an hour later, Temporary Master Jimmy walks through the door with a plastic bag. He waves Apple over to the bedroom, not Temporary Master Jimmy’s and therefore the extra bedroom. Apple’s chest tightens at the notion, but he does as he’s told.
Crawling into the carpeted room, it’s not at all what Apple expects. Instead of empty corners and glaringly bland walls, it’s… oddly homey. There’s an enticing bed in the corner of the room and beside it a simple but lovely wooden nightstand and lamp. At the front of the room, there’s even a little dresser. And… the room itself is a beautiful shade of olive green.
Temporary Master Jimmy’s already in the room, sitting on the floor against the foot of the bed. He wordlessly pats the space beside him.
Apple’s hands start to go numb with fright. Still, it’s a command—even if Temporary Master Jimmy didn’t state so explicitly. Hoping his hesitation doesn’t show, Apple crawls until he’s kneeling where he was gestured to and sits, careful not to let his back touch the bed.
Temporary Master Jimmy lets him get settled, then pulls the plastic bag from earlier into his lap and looks at Apple.
“I know we don’t know each other all that well,” Temporary Master Jimmy starts slowly, “but I noticed you have a kind of… affinity for apple stuff, so I— I got you something.” Apple watches, half excited, half terrified as Temporary Master Jimmy reaches into the bag and pulls out whatever’s in there.
Apple sees the felt stem first, then a dark green leaf sprouting from the top of the round bright green fabric shape. And then he sees legs. Eight to be exact. And eyes.
“It’s an apple octopus plush! Or a… an apple-pus?“ Temporary Master Jimmy laughs a little. “I just… I saw it and I thought it was kind of cute and, you know, figured you might like it. Given… everything…”
Apple’s staring. It’s an octopus, but—but it’s green and it has a leaf and a stem like an apple. And it looks so soft...
But Apple knows It’s a trick. It has to be. People don’t get him things, not without a lot of convincing. Certainly not unprompted. But… but Temporary Master Jimmy’s just holding it out to him expectantly, and every second that passes by, the itch to grab it grows. Soon enough, Apple doesn’t care if it’s a trick. He moves to take it, fully expecting to have it wrenched out of his reach the moment he gets close enough for it to hurt him.
Only it isn’t.
When Apple reaches out to grab it, Temporary Master Jimmy doesn’t snatch it away. He lets Apple take it in his hands. He lets Apple touch its perfect fluffy fabric and hold it to his chest. It’s soft, so much softer than he imagined it’d be.
For the first time since arriving here, Temporary Master Jimmy makes Apple smile.
“I-I got a story, too,” Temporary Master Jimmy continues, smiling like this is the best thing to ever happen to him. He pulls a little hardcover picture book out of the bag to show Apple. “So… so I’ll make you a deal.”
At the words, Apple freezes, and the smile on his face drops in a flash. The look he shoots Temporary Master Jimmy is one of pure horror.
How could he have been so stupid? The rewards, the kind words—of course there’d be a “but.” The salesman never let him off that easy either.
“Okay,” Apple squeaks, because he knows he has no real choice in the matter. He just hopes his behavior earlier won’t influence the severity of the punishment.
What is he thinking? Of course it will.
“I’ll read you a story tonight, but only if… if you sleep on your bed tonight.”
Now he’s just confused. Apple… wasn’t expecting that. He expected to be starved or to receive a whipping, not to sleep on a bed. An insanely plush, comfortable-looking…. bed.
Apple nods because he’s expected to. “Okay.”
Apple doesn’t understand why Temporary Master Jimmy’s face lights up when he says that, but he does know watching Temporary Master Jimmy jump up with the book in hand makes him nervous. Master Clay never let him on the furniture, nevermind a bed. He never told Apple why, but Apple assumes it was the filth that covered him. Besides, Apple wouldn’t want to ruin Master Clay’s lovely couches.
Which is why when Apple stands up with the plushie held to his chest, he hesitates even touching the bed.
He looks longingly over it’s big fluffy pillows and soft, clean green-striped white comforter. Then he peeks at Temporary Master Jimmy, who’s watching him expectantly.
This is what your temporary master wants, Apple reminds himself firmly. It doesn’t matter if he hurts you afterwards. Do as you’re told.
Apple swallows hard and lays a shaking hand on the comforter.
He cringes, waiting for the inevitable yelling, waiting for the punishment. But it doesn’t come. Rather, Temporary Master Jimmy says, “Good! Good. Okay, come on, Apple, you can do it. Get under the covers and I’ll read you that story.”
A story. How long has it been since someone’s read to him? Ages.
So Apple puts his other hand on the comforter, the one holding the plushie, ready for any reprimand he might receive. When he doesn’t get one, he pulls the covers back, crawls onto the mattress, sits himself up amongst the pillows, and covers himself again with the blanket. It feels… foreign. Oddly enough, just a little familiar, too.
Temporary Master Jimmy hides a smile behind his hand, not very well and definitely not in a way that’s reassuring for Apple, before climbing into bed next to him, staying on top of the blankets instead of getting under them.
Still, the proximity makes Apple freeze—well, aside from his hands. Those are shaking uncontrollably despite clutching at the covers by his lap.
Temporary Master Jimmy gets all but comfortable before noticing Apple’s discomfort. “Geez, sorry, I should’ve asked. Is… is it okay for me to be on your bed?”
“Of course,” Apple says without hesitation. His hands continue to shake.
But everything is okay. Whatever his master chooses to do with him is okay. His salesman knew that, Master Clay knew that. Why doesn’t Temporary Master Jimmy get it?
“Here.” Temporary Master Jimmy scoots further to the right, away from Apple, until he’s sitting on the corner of the bed. “Better?”
Apple exhales shakily. “Y-yes?” Is he allowed to answer?
Temporary Master Jimmy shifts until he’s comfortable. Apple takes the octopus plush and pulls it back into his arms, snuggling deeper into the blankets as discreetly as possible.
Beside him, Temporary Master Jimmy smiles. Then he clears his throat and grabs the bright red picture book from his lap.
“Right. So, uh, get comfy.” Temporary Master Jimmy flashes the cover at Apple, who can’t help but watch him with wide, fascinated eyes. “This is Corduroy. I loved this book when I was a kid.” Temporary Master Jimmy flips to the first page. “I mean, I don’t know if you’ll think it’s too kiddy or boring, but… just tell me if you want me to stop.”
Apple nods, barely perceptible, even though he knows he has no intention of doing so. Temporary Master Jimmy chose this book. Of course Apple will be grateful.
“Okay.” Temporary Master Jimmy nods. “I’m… I’m starting now. Uh, Corduroy is a bear who once lived in the toy department of a big store...”
As he reads, Apple finds himself hanging onto every word. He kind of likes how Temporary Master Jimmy’s voice gets huskier when he reads. It reminds him of Master Clay.
With the image in mind, Apple finds his eyes drifting closed against his will.
“...‘You must be a friend,’ said Corduroy. ‘I’ve always wanted a friend.’’
“‘Me too!’ said Lisa, and gave him a big hug.” Temporary Master Jimmy turns the book to Apple to show him the final picture, but he’s almost completely asleep now, curled up on the bed and clutching that apple octopus tightly in his hands.
Temporary Master Jimmy brushes a strand of faded green hair out of Apple’s face and pulls the covers up to waist. He does it so gently, so carefully. He doesn’t know the slightest of touches are enough to rouse Apple.
Temporary Master Jimmy slips out of bed and heads for the door.
Behind him, Apple pipes up, “Thank you, Temporary Master Jimmy.” It’s soft and a little hoarse from the screaming fit he threw earlier, but his appreciation is clear.
“Temporary Ma—? Uh, you’re welcome, Apple.” Temporary Master Jimmy chuckles quietly. “Goodnight.”
On his way out, he flicks the light off and closes the door behind him.
Without Temporary Master Jimmy around, Apple lets himself get truly comfortable. He buries himself in a mound of blankets and pillows and cuddles the apple octopus stuffie against his cheek, for once not worrying that it’ll be taken away from him.
That night, Apple sleeps the most peacefully he has in years.

Sehun scenario - No more running
Tumblr media
requested by anon
genre: angst, fluff
Summary: Two years after finding out you are pregnant. You and Sehun decide it's best to just part ways so he doesn’t have to be tied down to a family at a young age. But when en he sees you and your child together, he refuses to let you slip away again.
his POV You know on TV where they show runaway fathers and how terrible they are for ditching their child? Sometimes it's not because they wanted to. There's always an exception. And that's what happened to me. I fell for a girl and she got pregnant with my child. I was so excited to get away from the idol schedule and be the loving father I always wanted to be! But she didn’t share that feeling. She wanted me to follow my passion. She thought of the group and fans I would be disappointing. So she left me. She said I didn't have to worry about it and that she would be okay.
"In another world, this can work out between us. I love you, Sehun, but you have to do your part as the idol. Maybe we'll meet again in a few years, but right now. I can't pull you away from this. I'll be okay... We'll be okay." I can still hear her voice as it replays in my head. Before I could stop her she was gone. She thought I would just carry on with life, but I can't. I'm not interested in other girls. I just want her.
It's been two years now and I've been counting the minutes of you old our child must be. It's been gnawing at my brain for the longest time. Does the baby look like me? Or like her? Is she still thinking about me? Or has she found a new love?
One day during dance practice, I felt completely down. No one else knows about Y/n and the baby and that's how I preferred it until I saw her again. I’m determined to find her and finally be with her after all this time.
"Sehun-ah! You alright?" Chen came over and tried to rub my tense shoulder.
"Yeah. We've just been at this for hours and I just need rest." I replied. Chen looked at our dance instructor and he nodded.
"Okay, boys. Go on and get some sleep. You've worked hard enough."
I gathered my things and headed to the back entrance. I got into my car and just drove. Today was another one of those days where the thoughts in my head start giving me a headache and there is nothing I can do about it. I pulled over in the city and put my hood and mack on. No one knows me if I blend.
I walked around Seoul as the sun began to set and looked around at all the people. It was like a painful memory every time I saw a child with their parents. That could have been me. I could have taken a break and stayed with Y/n. We could have raised the child together until they were old enough for me to start promoting again. We could have alternated and balanced EXO and childcare.
I looked into the restaurant windows and saw people laughing and sharing a meal together. When I reached the last one I flashed back to when I was younger, sitting in a highchair, being fed by my mother and-- wait! I'm not flashing back. That's not me as a baby!
My eyes went wide when I saw her. It was Y/n! I pulled my mask down in disbelief and stared at the little boy she was feeding. She smiled at him as he took a spoonful of rice into his mouth. Before I knew what I was doing, I opened the door and walked right up to them.
Your POV "Chew chew chew, baby~ That's my boy!" I smiled as his little gummy grin spread across his face. I wiped around his mouth and he turned away from me. I was confused for a moment until I realized he was looking at someone.
"Y-...Y/n," Sehun said.
"Sehun. What are you doing here? Won't you get caught?"
"I don't care. How long have you been in Korea?" He asked as he took a seat across from me.
"We kinda never left. I moved out of the city, but I got a new job in Seoul so..." I explained. He never once took his eyes off of our son. He was a perfect blend of the two of us. He had his fathers eyes and smile with my complexion and nose.
"You changed your number."
"I needed to start a new life somehow. Look, maybe we should have this talk in private."
"We can take my car." He offered
"It'll be easier with my car, with the car seat and all."
"Oh, yeah. Can- Can I hold him?"
"Of course."
His POV The second I lifted him to my chest he wrapped his arms around my neck, his little fingers tickled the skin. It felt so right. Like there was something broken inside of me and holding him fixed it. His head leaned onto my shoulder and I kissed his forehead. Y/n almost paid the bill, but I stopped her and swiped my card with my free hand.
"It's the least I can do." She nodded and grabbed the diaper bag and the three of us went out to her car. I readjusted my mask and buckled in my son. He lifted his arms once he was fastened in and wiggled his chubby fingers at me, making me laugh. Y/n got into the driver seat and started the car. We drove back to her place, thankfully no one saw me and tried to follow.
"I never asked you, what's his name?"
"Y/c/n." She replied. I smiled and looked back at him in his car seat.
"That's the perfect name for him."
We pulled up to her place and got out. I was quick to get Y/c/n out of his seat and back into my arms. We walked into the house and I set our son down on his play mat in the living room so he can stretch his legs a bit. Y/n and I sat down on the couch in silence for a moment, watching the life we created.
"He's just like you, you know?"
"You're just saying that."
"No. Really. He is energetic and fun in private and oddly shy in public. He even touches his ear like you do." She explained. She honestly didn't have to. I can see it. His behavior is a lot like mine. But I wanted to know more. What's his favorite foods or shows? Does he have a special blanket or toy? And most of all, does he already have a man in his life.
"To answer your unsaid question, no. I haven't been seeing anyone. I just have a lack of interest and being a single mom isn't very attractive to most guys."
"I think it is," I replied eagerly. "Y/n you still read and answer my thoughts. The second I saw you it's like nothing changed. I have been miserable for the past two years trying not to find you. I made a mistake when I let you go like that. When you love someone you fight for them. I know you'll protest, but I want to be in both of your lives. I won't give up on this. Not again."
I saw the tears build up in her eye. she knows she won't be able to run again. Probably for the first time in two years, she won't have to. I held her hand and kissed her cheek. She exhaled, releasing all the tension and regret she'd been feeling in the past. Just then Y/c/n Stared at him, his eyes getting heavier with every blink.
"Oh. It's his bedtime. He's had a long day." She said getting up. She scooped him in her arms and he peaked over her shoulder, right at me.
"b-bba bba." He said softly with a wave.  I smiled and followed them up to his nursery. Y/n laid him down in his crib and he curled up with his plushie. She brushed her fingers through his baby hairs and turned on the baby monitor.
I smiled down at him as he drifted into a deep sleep and Y/n and I left. She turned off all the lights in the hall and living room and we went into her room. She dug through her dresser until she pulled out a book and handed it to me. There was a picture of our boy on the front when he was a newborn. I opened it and it took my breath away. All the photos of his first year were in the book. I gazed at his birth certificate. I noticed my name typed in but a blank space where my signature should be.
"I'm really glad you found us Sehun. I'm glad that you still want this." She said. It's all I've ever wanted. I looked at her and she smiled at me. I closed the baby book and walked closer to her.
"Nothing can keep me away from you two. I'm here now. I want to be there and raise him with you. We can make this work. You, me and our baby. I promise." I kissed her hand and she looked up at me. Her eyes switched from my gaze to my lips until I connected with a kiss. She hummed against my lips, feeling the spark that never faded. It's just how it should be. The perfect ending for the perfect girl. All I had to do now is be there for her, no matter what.

30 Tips For Falling Asleep When You’re Worried About Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow
1. Cheesy as it is, watch Bob Ross painting videos on Youtube. He makes me feel safe and secure. I love falling asleep to the funny stories he tells about his paintings.
He calms me down a lot when I’m feeling anxious or upset (which is mainly the reason I stay up) and I can drift off dreaming about happy little clouds and trees, and a river that Bob fishes in.
2. It’s kinda weird but stick a block of ice in your mouth and just lie in bed. As it melts it’s kinda like your consciousness melts with it.
3. The Spotify “Sleep” playlist; I put it through the Google Home Mini, lay back, close my eyes, and within about 10 minutes I’m drifting off!
4. Take a quick, hot, shower. It really helps you relax and makes you tired.
5. I learned to fall asleep by daydreaming.
Simple enough, but I had to adopt certain rules around it.
Don’t daydream about realistic things. That camping trip I’m planning for the weekend? That’s off limits. Anything centered around my real life is off limits.
Why? because that opens to the door to anxiety and overthinking those events. I become invested in making sure they go a certain way and that keeps me awake at night.
The same rule applies to people. Nobody I know. Because if I build the habit around people I spend time with it becomes: “Wait, should I have said that thing I said last week? I don’t think they liked that, oh gawd they hate me now.” I don’t want to be overthinking my real world relationships. I don’t really do that when I’m awake and alert, but I certainly do when I’m exhausted and not thinking straight.
So blast off in a tardis, go explore the moon, be a superhero. Or super spy. Explore some alien worlds and then the matrix and then escape the zombie apocalypse to sip martinis on the beaches of jurassic park. If I’m really struggling to fall asleep it helps to imagine scenarios where you’re physically exhausted.
6. I just put my pillow on the other side of the bed and for some reason this has worked since I was a child just turning around.
7. Focusing on my breathing. Breath in is one, breath out is two and so on. Get to ten and start again. If my attention drifts bring it back to breathing.
8. The military sleep procedure.
Here’s how to do it:
Relax the muscles in your face, including tongue, jaw and the muscles around the eyes.
Drop your shoulders as far down as they’ll go, followed by your upper and lower arm, one side at a time.
Breathe out, relaxing your chest followed by your legs, starting from the thighs and working down.
You should then spend 10 seconds trying to clear your mind before thinking about one of the three following images:
You’re lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but a clear blue sky above you.
You’re lying in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room.
You say “don’t think, don’t think, don’t think” to yourself over and over for about 10 seconds.
The technique is said to work for 96 percent of people after six weeks of practice.
9. White noise, such as rain sounds.
10. I’m kinda shocked no one said Sleep With Mepodcast. I used to have terrible nights not being able to sleep due to stress and anxiety, but Dearest Scooter’s dulcet tones and superfluous tangents (his words not mine) have definitely helped me to fall asleep. It’s the best podcast I never remember listening to, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
11. I have imaginary conversations with fictional characters. Sometimes I vent or ask for advice/guidance, sometimes I give it. Sometimes I antagonize them. Sometimes I’m a ‘character’ in their ‘universe’, part of their story. Sometimes I’m still me but I got stuck in their universe somehow. Sometimes I appear early in their story and have foreknowledge of their adventures and meticulously plan out how to minimize their tragedies. Eventually I’m dreaming.
12. Exercise. If you burned a reasonable amount of calories at any point today, your body is gonna sleep well.
13. I learned a trick recently that helps me a lot.
I count backwards from 99. SLOWLY.
The key is to do it slowly, and I cannot emphasize the importance of that enough. Think the number, then take a pause that feels a little bit too long before thinking the next number, then take another pause.
99… pause…
98… pause…
97… pause…
96… pause…
The lowest I’ve ever counted is into the 60s or maybe the 50s before I fall asleep. Often, I’m asleep before I’m through the 80s. Sometimes I’ll lose track of what the next number is because I catch myself falling asleep, so I’ll start over, and I always fall asleep quickly after that.
Again, the key is to count backward… s l o w l y
14. I just make up stories in my head. Sometimes I’m in the world of a TV show I like or in my own little dream universe I made where I have made up characters and such. And eventually I just fall asleep doing this.
15. Reading. It’s kinda sad but I’ve realized books put me to sleep now, even if it’s an exciting book.
16. Masturbate.
17. This is going to sound weird, but I slowly say good night to each of my body parts, starting with my toes and working up. Usually, I’m asleep by the time I hit my chest or so. If I’m not, I know it’s going to be a long night.
18. Listening to Rain and City Ambience on youtube, really relaxing.
19. I’ll usually listen to some music (on low volume) and just focus on that rather than focusing on trying to sleep.
20. Meditate. Some YouTube guided meditations really help for sleep.
21. Bedtime stories, they have plenty of them targeted toward adults for the specific purpose of getting you to fall asleep.
22. Eating a banana. It apparently helps you produce melatonin.
23. The alphabet game. I think of a category, like “types of plants” and go through the alphabet in my head and try to think of something in that category for each letter. I often fall asleep midway through the alphabet.
24. Camomile tea.
25. I tell myself not to think about sleeping. Just enjoy the nice crispy blankets and soft bed and I tell myself to try to relax and get really cozy instead and not to worry about falling asleep.
26. Weed.
27. I just look at the fan above me and follow its blade by revolving my eyes and I slowly get tired of it and fall asleep.
28. Probably not the healthiest method and not something to rely on but eating a large meal knocks me out.
29. Cuddling my plushies.
30. Basically I convince myself I’ve given up and go on my phone or play 3DS and make a plan to read something or play to a measurable point, so that there’s something that I WANT to stay awake for. Something that sleep would interrupt. Puts me right the fuck to sleep, and I’m never sure if I should be glad or annoyed.
