Betty aus der Tötungsstation

Bettys Herz pochte vor Aufregung und Angst, als sie in ihrem Käfig in der Tötungsstation saß. Die großen Augen der hübschen Katze scannen den Raum nach einem rettenden Blick, nach einem Zeichen der Hoffnung, dass sich jemand für sie interessieren würde.

Sie hatte schon so viel in ihrem jungen Leben durchgemacht und sehnte sich nun nach Liebe und Geborgenheit. Doch noch immer war sie schüchtern und zurückhaltend, unsicher in der Nähe von Menschen. Der Gedanke an ein liebevolles Zuhause mit einem einfühlsamen Dosenöffner und einem Katzenkumpel zum Spielen war wie ein Hauch von magischem Glück in Bettys trübem Alltag.

In ihrem Käfig verträumt vor sich hinstarrend, fühlte sie plötzlich eine Veränderung in der Luft. Eine wohltuende Energie zog durch den Raum und ließ Betty aufhorchen. Ihre Ohren spitzten sich, als sie sanfte Schritte hörte, die sich ihrem Käfig näherten.

Dann spürte sie seine Blicke auf sich ruhen - den Blick eines liebevollen Herzensmenschen, der sie anschaute, als wäre sie das schönste Wesen auf der ganzen Welt. Betty spürte die Verbindung, die sich zwischen ihnen aufbaute, und wagte es, sich etwas näher zu begeben. Der Fremde, der sie ansah, hatte dieses besondere Funkeln in seinen Augen, das Bettys Herz zum Leuchten brachte.

Mit jedem weiteren Tag öffnete sich Betty ein kleines Stückchen mehr. Der liebevolle Dosenöffner verstand ihre Ängste und gab ihr die Zeit, die sie brauchte, um zu vertrauen. Gemeinsam mit ihrem neuen Katzenkumpel spielte sie, tobte und erlebte zahlreiche Abenteuer.

Betty konnte es kaum glauben - sie hatte es geschafft. Sie hatte die schlimme Tötungsstation hinter sich gelassen und endlich ihr Traumzuhause gefunden. Jeden Tag genoss sie die Liebe und Geborgenheit, die sie so lange vermisst hatte. Aus der einst schüchternen und verängstigten Katze war eine selbstbewusste und glückliche Katze geworden.

Bettys Geschichte ist eine Erinnerung daran, dass auch die scheueste Seele eine zweite Chance verdient. Sie zeigt uns, dass sich das Warten auf ein liebevolles Zuhause immer lohnt und dass manchmal ein einziger Blick genügt, um zwei Herzen für immer zu verbinden. Betty wird nie vergessen, wie sie gerettet wurde und wird jeden Moment ihres neuen Lebens in vollen Zügen auskosten.

May 27, 1967: The Music Explosion made a massive move into Billboard's top 40 section, from Number 73 to 40, with "A Little Bit O' Soul." The British band, The Little Darlings initially recorded the track in 1965. The Music Explosion, a five-piece band from Mansfield, Ohio, was discovered by record producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz. Kasenetz and Katz signed the bubblegum pop acts 1910 Fruitgum Company and The Ohio Express and produced Ram Jam's 1977 hit "Black Betty."

What About Our Children?

“Ethan! Did you hear what happened? Cisneak had sex with a student! I can’t even believe this! Look at this article!”. It’s my senior year, we’re a few months in. A few of my close friends are taking AP Latin, with their teacher when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, on some random weeknight, news articles are being written about how a teacher at my school had a sexual relationship with a past student that had been going on throughout her high school career. It was late at night, and I was reading all these articles. I felt uneasy. Walking into school the next day, the murmurs in the hall. What should I believe? Is this true? Is it false? The teacher was arrested. Forbidden from coming back onto school grounds. We talked about it with teachers. To our surprise, the teachers didn’t know anything. They didn’t receive an email. We, the students, were the ones telling the teachers what was going on. The school didn’t do anything. The school never talked about it. There was no school assembly telling us what happened. It’s as if they were trying to push in under the radar. It didn’t matter if we didn’t feel safe, if we didn’t feel secure in our own school. It led me to think, are my teachers just being kind? Are they just being teachers? How many of these teachers want other things from students that aren't appropriate, or in other terms, aren't legal? I felt uncomfortable; scared; worried. I didn’t know who I could trust anymore. The worst part? How the school did absolutely nothing to make us feel safe where we had to spend the majority of our year.

So, what’s the big issue? Pedophilia is on the rise. In forms of student-teacher relationships, child pornography, sexual-abuse etc. This creates psychological, emotional and physical damages to the victims involved. It can also make children feel unsafe in their own school, own home, or unsafe in general. As more cases come to the surface, more arrests take place, it is important now more than ever to take this topic seriously and talk about it.

Pedophilia is on the rise in New Jersey. In September 2016, an instructor from the Jewish Community Camps at Medford was arrested and charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. The offender was also charged with three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. In March 2018, a former teacher at Lenape High School was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, by taking inappropriate videos and photographs up skirts and shorts of the female student body. In August 2018, “The Betty and Milton Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill released a statement confirming an investigation involving a minor who worked at the early childhood camps.” (Camp Counselor at NJ Jewish Community Center Accused of Child Sex Abuse). In March 2019, an Evesham township resident was charged with possession of child pornography. In August 2019, a Mount Laurel resident was arrested and charged for possession of child pornography and with one count of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. In November 2019, a former teacher at Cherokee High School was sentenced to five years in state prison on the count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Okay? How does this affect the children, the victims of these cases? In my school, when a teacher was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child by pursuing a relationship with her outside of school, it left the students feeling unsafe. They felt as if their trust had been broken, that they couldn’t trust anyone anymore.

The article Signs of Childhood Sexual Abuse in Adult Survivors, mentions psychological effects that occur in adult survivors. These signs can include dissociation, trust-issues, troubles creating boundaries, the urge to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, low self-esteem, isolation, suicide or self-injury, eating disorders, etc. Along with the psychological effects, survivors face emotional and physical effects, as well. These can include, but are not limited to, depression, grief, guilt, gastrointestinal distress & nausea, and asthma.

From the Foothills Child Advocacy Center, it is stated that there are immediate effects and long-term effects on child victims of child pornography. These immediate effects can include physical injury and pain (including STDs), feelings of shame, worthlessness, anger and confusion, somatic responses, withdrawal and isolation, as well as anxiety, depression, PTSD, nightmares, etc. The long-term effects on child victims can include depression, anxiety, PTSD, distorted or unhealthy sexuality, difficulty creating and sustaining healthy relationships, suicide attempts, self-mutilation, substance abuse, etc. However, the article also states that there are not just negative effects on the victim. Child pornography fuels the demand for more child pornography. It can be used to normalize sexual activity between offenders and victims. In other words, it can be used as a gateway. Child pornography also contributes to the hyper-sexualization of children.

In the past year, various pedophilia charges (child pornography) have been brought to light, just in my own town. This includes one teacher taking pictures up girls skirts, pursuing relationships with a student, and residents having thousands upon thousands of child pornography saved on their computer. Unfortunately, these issues of child-predators are not being resolved. In 2005, Kip McFarlin was reported by various students for inappropriate conduct and sexuall suggestive language. When the school district had decided to review his case, he was not fired or reported to the police, nor took away his teaching license. The school district had sent him to another school, and kept his status under the radar. In 2011, he had slept with a sixteen-year-old student. As stated on 12 News Now, "The school district's attorney said, 'Look, we don't have to end this teacher's career. We can get him a 'graceful exit.' That's exactly what they did. They allowed this teacher to move to a different school district," says Reilly. In what world would we put the safety, protection, and well-being of our children below that of a child predator? It begs the question, do the school districts truly care about the well-being and protecting the students? How many other cases have been swept under the rug for worries of cost and protection of a child predator. And most importantly, how is this affecting the children and development into adulthood?

What can we do about this? There are psychologists that are currently trying to understand the cause and desire of pedophilia. There are cases of pedophiles avoiding jail time, or getting none at all. In terms of pedophiles who have not acted on their desires, and in cases where they have, it is possible to undergo intensive therapy in order to avoid these desires, and work towards not wanting to pursue them. Intensive therapy and psychiatric treatment can help them understand why these desires are wrong.

What about in schools? Schools can start doing more intensive and detailed background checks. Schools also should enforce a one and done policy. If there is a case of a student-teacher relationship, the teacher should not be allowed to return to teach at any school. Almost like a blacklist for teachers.

Another solution would be enforcing stricter punishments on pedophiles. As it stands, pedophiles are, more than often, able to get off with little to no jail time. How is that acceptable? If someone is charged with pedophila, they should have a longer sentence. Why not a lifetime sentence? They took someone’s childhood away from them, so what’s wrong with taking the rest of their adulthood? The offenders should also be forced to attend intensive psychiatric and therapeutic sessions in order to talk about these desires, how to overcome them and to have it explained why it is not okay.

There are people who believe pedophilia is not bad. It is a disease that can be studied and from there it can be cured. We are able to study, and perform therapy on those with sexual attractions towards children to be able to fix them. They are not bad people, they are just sick. Obviously, there are pedophiles who do not act on their desires. However, this article is not to talk about them. There are pedophiles who go out of their way to sexually abuse, manipulate and harm children. There are pedophiles who want to have relationships with children. This should not be acceptable and is not the same as a pedophile who does not act on their desires. These pedophiles who harm children can not be cured. Those who act on their desires should be sent to jail and have stricter punishments enforced onto them. They should have to meet a psychiatrist daily, and face extreme repercussions if they return to be near a child. There should not be an option of bail, and they should be treated intensely.

We do not want to ruin a person’s life and career. If we were to report a pedophile, they would lose their job, their family, their friends. Their life would be over. Why would we want to purposely ruin somebody’s life? That’s a shitty thing to do. And? What about it? The offender had no problem ruining a child’s life. They had no problem taking advantage of a child, manipulating them, abusing them. They can face the consequences for their actions. Unless, you are saying that pedophila is okay.

Do we care about our children? Do we want the best for our children? Do our children deserve to grow up with long-term psychological, emotional, and physical effects from their abuse? We need to do more as a community to make sure that our children are protected. Child pornography charges continue to be brought to light, with the offenders usually getting off with a slap on the wrist, or with punishments that lack severity. Talk to your children. Make sure they are doing okay in school, ask about their teachers, if they feel safe. Pedophilia is a serious issue that is thrown aside. It could be your child, your sister, your brother, someone that is close to you, that has suffered from effects of abuse from child-predators. Look after who you love, who you care about, and talk to them. Nobody deserves to have to go through such a serious case alone. Does a child deserve that?
