I find it very funny that I enjoy reading Corpse Knight Gunther yet stopped reading a romance because the couple was slightly mean to each other and their friends.

Maybe it's all about my expectations? Promise a sweet kind relationship and give subtle cruelty that's never addressed and I am out. Promise grimdark and have the character be just slightly less of a relentless asshole twenty chapters in? Hell yeah I am cheering for them.

Brains are weird man.

#webtoons #corpse knight gunther is great hoghly recommend #is quite dark (tw for violence mainly) but due to the core friendship slowly developing #and many valient side characters given full humanity and personhood even if just for a brief moment #before being taken out #somehow bolsters and reassures me in a way that things claiming to be sweet but are shallow and cruel (even just mildly) don't #just #bizarre really #brain why are you like this #I think it might be because in Corpse Knight the callousness is why the world is called grimdark #it's acknowledged you're allowed to grieve for it #but in that romance book it was subtle and I knew it would never be adressed #no one in the comments even noticed #personal log #oh hey look brain is braining again #aha words are mine to comprehend once more #I can play and revel and delight in language I have missed this sort of clarity I hope I get to hold onto it for a while #mild analysis mostly rambling

seeing those "i can already imagine people say *bad opinion on a media/or just sth op personally hates (99% an opinion against the media)* *followed by op defending the media from the imaginary people they just made up that make them angry*" time and time again and they never cease to amaze me. i feel so bad for people who need to make up people that may or often may not exist to discuss media bc they apparently need someone to antagonize lol. discussing media only when u find a way to climb on your high horse first

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. They would have loved to tell you about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut!”

#this is us-specific obviously #the thing about history is that no class can cover everything #and you can continue learning about it as an adult really easily #I had one shitty history teacher (bizarrely paranoid about communism and also very boring and he let jordyn l. bully me)#but the rest were good

Happy tdov to fat trans people. 🏳️‍⚧️ Biggest thing that helped me as a trans kid was seeing older fat trans people. There were a lot of really irritating "advice" posts going around early in my time on the internet with a lot of misinformation in them, but one that I constantly saw (in addition to people claiming you should wear your pants rediculously low or only wear button ups) were posts saying you had to lose weight to transition. Can confidently confirm that is completely untrue. 👍

If posting fic online has taught me anything, it’s that I have no idea how the reader will react to anything. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Not the faintest clue.

Fics that I think I scribbled off just to get them out there get the kindest, most rapturous feedback. Fics I slaved over, agonized over, bled my soul into get a couple tepid replies. Fics I thought were me revealing the darkness and weird kink that lives in my brain, scared to even post it for fear of judgement, get, “Aaaw that’s so sweet!” replies. Baffling.

My conclusion? You just never know. You really just can’t know. When I did a workshop with 20 other writers I would try to guess what their critique of my story would be and I was right maybe 1 in 20 times. Only one other writer would have the same critique for my story that I had. And it wasn’t even always the same person.

The encouraging part about this is, if self recrimination, the fear that you know what people won’t like about your story, is holding you back, just say fuck it! You’re almost certainly wrong! All you can do is make it the best story you can for the energy you have. And yeah, sometimes that means scribbling it out in an evening and kicking it out to the void of the internet before you can change your mind or worry about editing it more than once because then you’ll never post it.

It’s all chaos, man. You don’t get to decide what the audience thinks. All you can do is create it and put it out there for them to decide.
