My Analysis of the Best Paired Endings in 3H (Part 6: Ferdinand/Dorothea)
Tumblr media
(Normal): Thanks but no thanks, Mr. Noble. I already have my heart set on someone else. (Ferdinand & Dorothea support level B reached): I suppose I can settle for you just this once, Ferdie.
The writers obviously put a lot of love into this ship, as it's one of the rare times that the main story dialogue changes depending on Support level between two characters. Plus, since he asks her out on a date outside of their Support chain, it shows that Ferdinand is canonically interested in Dorothea. And this is true in Hopes as well. He fears his mind will "wander to other things" while training with her.
Tumblr media
Dorothea: Song and dance live on in our memories, but there's no real record of them. Even memories fade over time. Will anyone remember me when I'm gone?
Dorothea is a Libra, an air sign. Air signs are masculine, but not as much as the fire signs. Libras are extroverted, cozy, and friendly people. Libras, like the Scales that symbolize the sign, are often concerned with attaining balance, harmony, peace, and justice in the world. Dorothea had the motivation to join Edelgard's cause to dismantle the corrupt nobility. But she was also compassionate and hated the idea of fighting people she knew.
Tumblr media
Ferdinand: I will do what I'm called to do, even if no mark of me remains in the history books.
Ferdinand bears the Crest of Cichol, which is associated with the Justice Arcana. Justice is a signifier of legal matters being resolved in a fair and balanced manner. It represents the power to distinguish between what is fair and what is unfair, in an impartial way. Ferdinand's dream was to lead the Empire to an age of enlightenment and hold his father accountable for his crimes. The downside to his ambitions was that his life revolved around being recognized for his achievements.
Tumblr media
Ferdinand: That is true nobility! Acting in accordance with the people's needs and wishes. As war drags on, those living near the front lines inevitably get the worst of it. Still…Edelgard will not give in. She will push to complete her mission, no matter how many people die. Not everyone with noble blood has noble ideals.
His character arc was about exemplifying true nobility, defined as, "having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals." Not just being noble, defined as, "belonging to a hereditary class with high social or political status." And I would argue that opposing Edelgard was vital to his character arc.
Tumblr media
Dorothea: Oh, Ferdie. You opposed Edie for so long… I had real hopes for you, you know? Now you're following her. Is that your duty as a noble? Follow your master when they say to heel? Ferdinand: I will not try to explain my duty or hers. You would not understand. I wish you could.
Dorothea is one of the few non-lord characters that will actually react to another non-lord character's death. If you don't recruit Ferdinand, he will die at the Great Bridge of Myrddin so that his name goes down in history as "the legendary Ferdinand of Adrestia".
If Ferdinand does not complete his arc, Dorothea will be the one who is most disappointed. She will say she had high hopes for him, a reference to their B-Support where he made her treats, and she reconsidered him as husband material. His memory will not live on in the history books, but it does live on in her heart. It was hard not to think of this pairing as "canon" after I saw this dialogue.
Dorothea: Though we only knew each other briefly back at the academy, you were still my friend—but now our paths have diverged forever.
There's even a Hopes version of this dialogue available in Record Keeper. Similar to Edelgard and Byleth in Silver Snow, if Ferdinand and Dorothea's paths diverge, it is treated as a great tragedy of fate. It shows how much the writers favored this particular ship.
Tumblr media
(Normal): Yes… I have met someone quite charming recently. I'm hoping we can spend more time together soon. (Dorothea has reached Support Rank A with a male): I am. There is someone whose company I have come to enjoy.
While Dorothea is bisexual, she did seem to have a preference for men. The dialogue in her B-Support with Edelgard only changes if Dorothea has attained A-Support with a male character.
Linhardt: You've probably overcome a lot of tough times, haven't you? I think that's incredible, really, but why not just let go of the suffering and run away from the memories that cause you pain? I suspect you'll find it a better way of living. I know I do. Dorothea: That's not living, Lin. It's running away. If I leave my hardships behind, then all of that means nothing.
She only got into the academy by buttering up some noble, which suggests that she may have had to perform sexual favors. She had a poor self-image, despite her physical beauty. And that is why I think she pursued men so adamantly, even when she was not truly attracted to them. She was running away from her past.
Tumblr media
Dorothea: What's important isn't how someone looks, it's their true nature. I don't pretend to know your true nature. I don't even have a very good understanding of my own. But I suppose you see mine just fine, don't you? Just a silly girl with no thoughts in her head except for marrying a noble, yes? Good-bye, Felix.
Dorothea had to hone her masculine energy while living on the streets and performing in the opera. She despised the goddess (although she has a hidden talent for faith). Her paralogue with Ingrid showed how the two had contrasting views on marriage. Dorothea wanted to play the traditionally feminine role of housewife, with a noble husband fulfilling the traditional masculine role of provider and protector.
Dorothea: But if you and I were devoted to one another… maybe we could strive for the future you believe in. Maybe I'd finally understand your path and be able to think about more than just myself. Hubert: Seems it's my turn to not understand. Did you just propose marriage as a way to get to know me?
She was always looking for a wealthy husband to take care of her into her old age, and often came across as nothing but a shallow gold-digger. Because she was afraid of living in poverty, she would settle for a nobleman regardless of whether or not she knew him very well or was actually in love with him.
Tumblr media
Sylvain: You know, even when I was a kid, I never had trouble with girls. …But thinking about it now, I wonder what they liked about me back then. They didn't know everything about me… It's just confusing. Dorothea: Oh, where did that come from? No one can know everything about you.
She was at first dismissive of the idea that people need to know each other fully to get married. But she did commiserate with Sylvain about how people wanted to marry her without even knowing anything about her. However, she flirtatiously makes plans to grow old with him immediately afterwards. Even though they still barely knew each other.
Dorothea: I never had much to begin with in life, and I worry that one day, I'll be that way again… That's why I keep searching for someone who will love me. Someone unaware of the songstress, who can love a girl that used to be scared and alone on the streets of the capital… I wonder if such a strange person can even exist.
But what she really wanted was to spend her life with someone who did know her true self. Several of her endings depict her giving up on her goal of finding a rich husband. She is able to find love with Petra and Manuela and those are happy endings for her. But I still think the happiest ending for her is to find her dream man. A rich provider and protector who would know and love her as the scared orphan girl.
Tumblr media
Dorothea: Oh, really? You're something different? That's not how I remember things… It was the very day that I was discovered…
I think Ferdinand offered the best closure to her character arc. There was a palpable sexual tension between them in both games, with Dorothea pushing him away yet secretly desiring to be closer. I'd argue she has more far chemistry with him than any of her other potential partners. At the academy, Dorothea did not flirt or make advances on Ferdie, despite him being the exact type of wealthy noble she was after. But in the end, she was more open, honest, and emotionally vulnerable with him than she was with anyone else.
Dorothea: Maybe I can believe you. I've wanted to ever since the day you made me those treats… I thought then that maybe you weren't like the others, but… There's a lot I have to let go of, Ferdie.
The tagline for the game was, "Sweet memories twisted by time's cruel hand". By getting closure with Ferdinand, Dorothea could reclaim a sweet memory and let go of some pain from her past. Ferdie considered Edelgard his rival and prided himself on being better than her. But with Dorothea, he said he wouldn't mind a life of being a simple drone, circling a queen. So, they both find a new way to live with each other. This pairing is a more wholesome alternative for Ferdie than Ferdibert. But Ferdie still is kind of a sub.
Tumblr media
Ferdinand & Dorothea Ferdinand reclaimed the position of Duke Aegir and initiated reforms within his domain. Through his political methods, which closely aligned with the needs of the common people, the Aegir Duchy swiftly underwent reconstruction. Behind this success story was the significant contribution of Dorothea, the former songstress who became the Duchess, who dedicated herself to serving the commoners. Ferdinand, recognized for his achievements, was entrusted with governance across all of Fódlan. Despite being busy with his duties, he prioritized spending time with his family. He and Dorothea raised their children together, and their home was always filled with the sound of cheerful singing.
This feels like the picture-perfect ending for both of them. Dorothea achieves her life plan of marrying a rich provider and protector, overcoming her prejudice towards nobles. Her children carry on her legacy, and her memory will live on in their hearts.
And thanks to her experiences as an orphan, Ferdinand's policies benefit the commonfolk. He actually renounced his nobility and lived as a wanderer for five years because he did not believe in Edelgard's ideals, and he wanted to make up for his father's wrongdoings in his own way. He was prepared to leave no mark on history, but he is recognized for his achievements in the end.

Note
I'm having a really hard time fathoming how some people consider SB to be a righteous/heroic route or a route where we're the good guys. The route where:
You invade two independent nations under the pretence of "saving their citizens from oppression" (though I guess you can't be oppressed anymore if you're dead lol) even though Her Majestic Hypocrisy repeats a bunch of times that she's in for conquest and that she'd obliterate anyone who stands in her way.
The cast keeps victim-blaming the invaded parties for *checks note* defending their countries.
The death toll is the highest. You have to kill Ingrid, Rodrigue, Gustave and Sylvain. And you can also kill Ashe, Mercedes (btw, if she dies, the cutscene where Dimitri and Dedue grieve changes slightly, which is nice), Annette, Shamir, Ignatz, Raphael and Marianne (how does Margrave Edmund feel about Claude's alliance with the empire knowing his daughter was killed by its army?).
IIRC, this is the only route where you conscript merchants into the imperial army. No wonder the empire has the biggest army.
Based Rhea who, despite being hunted, still thinks about the safety of the continent first in the final chapter. It's hilarious how characters like Edespot or Clyde harp on about how Rhea is the big bad, and in the few scenes you have with her, she's just kind? Anyway. Rhea based.
In the C support conversation - which happens right after Felix got seriously injured and Sylvain got killed- there's this bit where Dimitri is like "I don't know if I can talk with like everything is normal, so many have died already" and Edespot's response is basically "yeah I don't see it that way. Let's agree to disagree". Also, I believe she wonders if she shouldn't just kill Clyde and Dimitri once they're out. Even though Clyde is her ally at the moment. You bet on the wrong lord, Clyde...
I probably forgot a few stuff, but... oh well.
To be honest,
The only things I like about Supreme Bullshit are :
Its ending! Supreme Leader and Barney (well, at least they throw a sword?) being sitting ducks while Rhea steals the show, and sacrifices herself in an epic shonen scene to get rid of the real threat, aka showing that unlike someone, she knows how to prioritize, and it ends up in an explosion. It matches the ending of the F-Zero anime (at 0.48!), Rhea/Falcon rushes to deal a blow (a Falcon punch and a Seiros strike I guess?) to their mortal enemy, there is a giant explosion, and both Rhea/Falcon fade away in a blinding light. Too bad the Supreme Bullshit BGM is eons away from "Searching to the Truth" :(
The reveal that Rhea kept the keys to the sekrit passages in the Imperial Palace - or Rhea knows more about Enbarr and its castle than the current Emperor and her aides...
Doro's paralogue being incredibly tone deaf about, uh, soldiers being "too busy" by the Mittelfrank troupe, that they can't basically protect the dancers/performers from bandits, when the paralogue happens in an area that is expressedly supposed to be full of soldiers!
If starts align in a certain way, it's the only route in Nopes where Clout dies!
Leopold! He's like Victarion Greyjoy, only if he was taken seriously. But we, as players, know better! Also he's a living retcon, from having a major cichol crest to gift to his son because he fought well (and not to, say, Big B or even Ferdie) a sacred weapon despite the route being all about muhritocracy!
Supreme Leader plans and plays with the cards she has in her hand - from trying to get good PR to get rid of people (Varley sr) by pitting them against her next target (the CoS)!
An entire game full of new Supreme Replies (tm)!
For shippers around, it has a Cathmir scene where everyone knows Shamir will prioritize Catherine's life over her allegeance! too bad this is a Supreme Leader route, so no, Shamir won't fucking try to kill her for blackmailing her and can even kill Catherine herself later on....
That's not a lot lol, and most of it are breadcrumbs because for the proper plot...
Yeah, it kinds of sucks.
Supreme Bullshit is even more tone deaf with the War and its realities than Tru Piss (and that's a feat!), Ferdie being completely, uh, off the mark about everything (invading lands and rekting people, and then saying those people's fears are only in their heads! Pal, one of the first missions in the SB exclusive chapters is to rout refugees??? + the nonsense about the Kingdom having more crested generals, when data shows the Empire has more crested peeps than the Kingdom!), Caspar being turned in the worst version of himself who dgaf anymore about protecting "innocents" and "justice", and, uh, everything with Monica.
Victim blaming is the norm with Fodlan games, but yeah, it really feels odd that suddenly, in the Zahras chapters, Dimitri's all "okay" when his closest friends either died or were grievly injured and the game proceeds as it does when, come on, why wouldn't Dimitri kill her the second they're out of the Zahras verse??
I really disliked how Supreme Bullshit yeeted Ionius from Adrestia, or how it didn't explore in more depth the Insurrection of the Seven, especially since we side with Leopold'n'Waldemar against Ludwig, who used to be allies! Also, as far as I remember, no one mentions anything about Arundel, why he ran away to the Kingdom with a young Supreme Leader and how he changed when he returned, or something?
If Ludwig is pushed by Supreme Leader, reciting her Dad's words, as the one who led the insurrection and the experiments on her, why the fuck no one else mentions them, as Leopold and Waldemar were on Aegir's side back then? They don't even mention "Arundel" participating, like, Volkhard sides against Ionius and hides his niece, but 3 months later, he returns and offers her as a guinea pig?
As is the norm with the Supreme Leader routes, the "truth" isn't what we're looking for, because we know Supreme Leader pushes a narrative she will follow to reach her goals, but where Tru Piss gave hints here and there about her narrative being, uh, rubish, we have no clues here, and Leopold prefers to flash his loincloth than giving us anything meaningful about that incident.
When you compare them to Matthias and Rodrigue (and Gilbert?) who often mention Lambert "back in the days", it's more and more obvious that... we're not supposed to ask questions in Supreme Bullshit, and just go with the flow.
And it ends with a high five.
I'd say it deviates less from Tru Piss than Golden Shower does from Verdant Winds, but it's an "expected disappointment".
That's why my only higlights are not plot relevant (save for the Captain Falcon - Rhea parallel) - because we know the plot will never deliver something meaningful in a Supreme Leader route.

The Adrestian Empire Headcannons (mostly of Black Eagle Family Headcannons)
- lots of Europe influances
- the buildings and arcitecture is more Roman or Gothic inspired
- COURT. IS. IMPORTANT.
- the most noble obsessed country
- only legitimate children can inheirate, which is why Ferdinand is so vocal about it
- the saints crests are vastly more important than the "10 elites" crests
- 10 elites crests are normally kept hushed.
- the most promient ones are, Gautier, Charon, Dominic, Gloucster, and Maruice's
- being gay is not ok in the empire!
- they are very bing on inheiritance and traditions, so having blood children is better than loving who you do
- even if this means you have children from multiple different spouses
- many of the minor nobles have crests in thier bloodlines somewhere from a lot of intermixing
- all crests of the saints run in the Hresvelg family, the crest of Serios is just most prominent and the only crest allowed to take the throne
- 4 is a lucky number in the Empire, a reason some believe Edelgard survived so much of her family's torments
- Edelgard was the eighth child born to Ionius, and the 4th one to have the crest of Serios
- Edelgard was the 4th daughter as well
- her siblings went:
Salomo/brother (12 years older) - no crest (1st Consort/Marcy)
Franz/brother (9 years older) - minor crest of serios (2nd Consort/Ada)
Gwen/sister (8 years older) - minor crest of serios (2nd Consort/Ada)
Twin brothers Tristian and Victor (5 years older) - no crests (2nd Consort/Ada)
Fiora/sister (3 years older) - minor crest of Indech (3rd Consort/Lucia)
Johanna/sister (1 year older)- Minor crest of Serios (3rd Consort/Lucia)
Edelgard (4th Consort/Anselma)
Twin brothers Gerhard and Andreas (4 years younger) - eldest had minor crest of Dominic (5th Consort/Isabella)
- Ionius had 5 consorts, Anselma being the 4th
- 1st -Marcy - died shortly after birth of her son
2nd - Ada - eventually put to death for treason
3rd - Lucia - put aside for Anselma
4th - Anselma - the revolt stopepd her from having more children
5th - Isabella - forced upon Ionius until there was a child then ignored
- Hubert was an only child, as that was traditional in the Vestra household
- Ferdinand's mother was a Gautier. Which is why he takes to the Paladin route so well.
- Ferdinand and Sylvain are 2nd cousins
- Ferdinand has 5 other siblings, 2 older and 3 younger
- Emma - 5 years older than Ferdie (different mother/ Ludwig's first wife)
Otto - 2 years older than Ferdie (different mother / Mistress)
Heidi - 3 years younger than Ferdie (Same mother / No crest and sickly)
Alice - 5 years younger than Ferdie
(Different mother / Mistress)
Werner - 7 years younger than Ferdie (Same mother/ Minor crest of Gautier)
- Caspar's older brother is named Jakob and is 7 years older
- the crests of Cichol, Macuil, Indech all run in the Von Bergliz blood
- Caspar's mother was a Varley making him and Bernadetta distant cousins
- Caspar would have had a younger sibling, but when his mother was 8 months pregnant she got extremly ill , and not only lost the child, but the ability to have more
- Linhardt doesn't have any siblings, becuase he was too sickly when born and his parents were worried to try again
- Bernadetta is the oldest of 3 sisters
- Dahlia- 2 years younger than Bernie
(Same mother)
Claire- 3 years younger than Bernie (from a mistress)(minor crest of Gloucster)
- Bernadetta's mother was a Von Vestra, distantly related by marriage to Hubert's Father
- Dorothea was the bastard child of a minor noble
- Her mother was a prostitute that couldn't prove Dorothea's legitmacy
- Dorothea fell in love with singing due to the lullabies her mother would sing
- Petra only has a younger brother named Marek
- Constance family was Lord Nuvelle
- the Crest of Noa came from her mother's side, as did her magical talent
- most in the Empire consider the Four Apostoles as Treachery against the Goddess
- the order of titles in the Empire goes:
Emporer/Empress
Duke/Duchess
Marquis
Lord/Lady
Count/Countess
Baron/Baroness
- HOLIDAYS ARE SUPER IMPORTANT
- you can take thier prime beach realistate from thier comd dead hands
- they accept people from the kingdom and leicester but normally with a upturned nose or close eye
- marrige though? Bring it. Bring all of it
- the kingdom has Sreng and Leicester has Almyra, so occasionally the empire boasts about Brigid or Dagda, despite fighting them once
- the reason the empire excells in Mages is becuase veins of magic run under the soil.
- thats also why they have very few plauges and great harvests
- empire boasts its been blessed by the goddess and the fact that the kindom (and in turn the alliance) broke away, they have been cursed

To that other anon about how crests are passed down officialy, Seiros is the only one to have a "biologicaly passed on" explanation about her crest, when apparently, everyone knows cethleann died before marrying and presumably childless, so idk how the official history explains how Linhardt and Ferdie's ancestors got their crests. Maybe Rhea crafted that lie before learning that humans didn't really question the origin of crests, or wilhelm was special to her, idk
I think the game mentioned somewhere that Cichol and Cethleann did the same thing as Seiros but if not I guess the game just wants you to assume that’s what happened.

anyway i’ve been playing three houses on maddening lately because i hate myself, and i also hated looking at tier lists that put some characters who are actually quite bad for high difficulty up top, i made my own tier list of suggested feth characters for if you do a maddening run. this is really just so i can scream about what characters i think are best (spoiler alert: it’s lysithea)
so, here we go, tell’s three houses tier list!
disclaimer: based on personal experience, not all characters have been used on maddening, but i have played the game like... eight times. on my ninth run. so i have some pretty decent data on majority of the characters.
tier is determined by how easy a character is to use, how much investment they require, and stat growths. crests+relics also influence this, since people who can use relics effectively are better. the game tells me not to judge based on crests, but come on!
lords are not included, jeritza is also not because he’s CF post skip exclusive, but come on, we all know where he’d place anyway
the real tier list is this: if you’re playing on normal or hard, literally anyone is fine. follow your heart. invest in who you like. on maddening, you unfortunately need to be a little more discerning. and sometimes, you just get rng screwed, even with the best, so rip lmao
TOP TIER (FOR COOL KIDS ONLY)
-lysithea: the coolest kid, doesn’t need a bed time. obvious bc her spell list and stats and access to relic are great. also look at her. shes bappy. she says so herself in her support with cyril (the only valid cyril support) all jokes aside, she can go down the basic mage line and mow down anyone who comes within her insane range. she also does well as a valkyrie, but with the speed penalty, i don’t recommend her staying in the class for long. just get uncanny blow! then hades will never miss!
-felix: he may be a shadow the hedgehog motherfucker but he has one important thing that shadow doesnt: crest of fraldarius. i guess shadow has a gun, though. felix is just straightforward gameplay baby. you send him at something and it dies. go crest boy go!
-mercedes: im legally obligated to put mercie in here because of her personal, her crest, and fortify. although restore is also super neat! miss mercie is just plain reliable as a healer. easily goes through the priest line to gremory.
-balthus: extremely helpful early game, doesn’t fall off later either. his personal skill of str/def +6 when below half health means he can either straightforwardly tank or just punch shit so hard it doesn’t have a chance to strike back. also gets a relic, healing focus, and a major crest that allows him to heal, so he’s a one man army. he does one thing really well and that’s use his fists to liquefy his opponents. also gets rally strength if you care about that. my favorite strategy with him is to let the damn poison strike archers knock his health down and then just go to town, combined with vantage for REAL fun. forget war monk, this guy should just go to war master
-sylvain: this little slut will join you if you’ve got boobs so he’s real handy to have around. plus he’s got some great qualities: flexible, strong, free relic, and maybe kinda hot i guess. you could make him a paladin, but you should give him a giant lizard. he can basically become any of the master classes with ease, although i would not recommend putting him into magic classes that much unless you wanna do a wholly mage sylvie build. will still perform just fine as a dark mage even without dedicated magery. but seriously, dragon
-petra: you want crit??? you got crit!!! this little lady can not only crit like hell but also dodge tank really well. i had fun making her a falcoknight once and just watching her line it all up and tear it all down. petra is reliable and stronk and also horrible to fight against so just. recruit her, please
-constance: entirely here because of bolting. for the low price of her reason being A you can nuke enemies from across the map. while you could make her the canon class of dark flier, i for one think the warlock line is better, because that’s four uses of bolting and even more if her crest activates. she also has a similar statline to lysithea and hits like a truck with other spells, and with bolting can supply long range support, so really, what’s not to love? the rest of her spells are good too. i go for gremory over dark flier bc while the mobility is great, x4 bolting is even better.
PRETTY GOOD TIER
-ingrid: extremely reliable, only down here instead of in the cool kids category bc her strength kinda sucks. i love ingrid though! she’s got a gambit gimmick and a crest+relic! ingrid with the chalice is super funny and i highly recommend it. i watched her fucking OWN every single siege tome user like that
-ignatz: some will say he sucks. some would argue his utility as a debuffer and rallybot. i will argue this ungodly crit. ignatz is a very luck man, blessed with great opportunities and a base crit value beyond any other. the little man will strike you down in the name of the goddess before you even know what’s going on. with a little help his strength will match the others and if you slap as much crit up on him as possible then it’ll never end. ignatz could be a one man army if he could crit more than one person at once. unfortunately he’s stuck to one divine judgment at a time. you can either use his 55% luck growth and archer level dex to gamble on a high crit rate, or you can stack his personal with another hit +20 to basically never miss anything. if you play deer, this man is a must.
-hilda: the usual, a crest, a relic, good times, a nice personal, but also like. she slaps. in general. pretty sick with an axe but works nicely as almost any physical class (i haven’t tried sword, though) because she naturally goes down the warrior line she can get some real fun times going. or just give her a lizard! women love swarms of lizards. she is a delicate little flower who will end a motherfucker
-ferdinand: fairly reliable as a cavalier class, and comes with some natural dodge tanky capability and access to seteth’s spear of assal and ochain shield which make him restore health like crazy and his personal will stay on. also a counter attack block is nice! he’s got some nice combat arts too. just a pretty straightforward cavalier. good times
-seteth: and while we’re on the crest of cichol, seteth is gonna make sure you never raise a finger against him again. you won’t survive. the only prepromote i use. he has good base stats, good growths, and he just does really well at what he does! he may come in a little late but he’s strong as fuck and is shredded. i tend to favor him over ferdie for the cichol linked items, but also i’m biased towards this anxiety dad, so take that as you will
-marianne: she tends to get left out of the healer talks because like most of the deer, she’s kind of weird. i will make an argument for her. what she lacks in utility she makes up for sheer raw power. while her crest won’t be of much use until very late and even then her sword prowess is not what you should be using her for, her spell list is all high power and she also comes with easy access to silence, which can nicely stall for some time against powerful mage enemies. she also gets a heal to herself if she’s standing next to an animal since all her friends are horses. still kinda slow as most healers are and not as much of a res tank, but a formidable edition nonetheless. blutgang is a good pinch hitter relic as well
-caspar: like most gauntlet users, caspar is good at one thing: punching. he is just really good at it. he’s perfectly geared towards being a war master. and he’ll perform that very well. he gets healing focus as one of his arts, so he can run off on his own if he wants. solidly reliable, will work at just. punching. go short king!
-yuri: the man’s utility is unrivaled. he’d go top tier if it weren’t for the fact that he’s got unreliable strength/magic growths. he could go either way as a physical attacker or a mage, but he naturally fits well in the assassin class along with trickster, and even dancer if you like (i’m trying that and honestly the male dancer animation is so sad. like. why can’t you put as much energy into it as the women.) but this man can go. hes fast. he’ll fuck you up
-hubert: while not as hard hitting as lysithea, the man still fucks things up with dark magic like she does. he lacks her double crests but he makes up for it by still smacking people’s nuts clean off and with the added bonus of range and debuffs dark magic provides. even better, you can make him a dark mage/bishop! however points off because they won’t let me stack fiendish blow. love u vampire man!!! unfortunately locked to CF so rip.
NICE TIER:
-lorenz: i adore him but hes a little unreliable as things go. in house, hes the better paladin than leonie, and his personal grants him a nice damage bonus with a battalion. lorenz shines as a dark knight the most, he has a heavy hitting spell list and if you really want to, thyrsus is technically his relic even though everyone puts it on lysithea! i really like him and he can perform really well but unfortunately like most of the deer he is Weird and this can put him in strange places with his growths. tis a cruel world, being a lorenz stan!
-dorothea: also suffers from strange statline. for some reason they’re pushing sword with her. honestly, because she’s outperformed by other mages, even on black eagles i tend to put her into dancer and kinda forget about her. she has quite a bit in heavy hitting spells and her personal skill grants a very nice mini heal to people around her, but honestly, i usually favor lysithea over her. she functions best as pure support but can still pull through on the offense. sadly, the competition is really rough.
-ashe: does his job, and does it well. not as heavy of a hitter as some of his fellow archers, but still good nonetheless, and has access to deadeye for extra range (although don’t count on it on maddening). his personal means he can unlock things no matter what class he’s in, so you can focus on others! i personally think that, you guessed it, he should get a giant lizard.
-annette: she does well, sadly outperformed by other house mages. functions as a rallybot and gets crusher if you care about that. i missed crusher completely in my first lions run, whoops, and then in my second one i had constance so uh. sorry, annette! she’s so very sweet, but her spell list has her down here.
-leonie: im hiding before the leonie stans get me. sure, like sylvain, she has his ability and shared flexibility for any class, but unlike sylvain she lacks power, a crest, and a relic. i see people keep arguing that she’s a massive damage dealer, but i honestly never see it. she falls off damage wise really quick, even if she’s got more than enough speed to deal with it. she’s basically just a lamer sylvain or ingrid without the crest abilities that those two have to make them stronger. what? the game keeps TELLING me crest = bad but as far as i can tell, all the best characters have one! on maddening GD, she’ll be good at first, but she’ll drop.
-dedue: i would rank this man higher since i simply adore him but he’s SUPER difficult for me to use. his defense is unrivaled, this man will flinch at nothing, but his speed is almost always shit and he tends to get nuked from orbit by mages. i love him, i really do, but man he can be a lot to manage. he does really well early game but can’t keep up. which is a shame, i really like him :(
-flayn: she has quite a bit of capability with rescue and fortify, and her major crest means her healing is even more potent. however she’s a little slow, extremely fragile, joins low leveled after you’ve already invested in a different healer, and is not very strong. she IS a res tank, though, and learns seal magic, which adds to her res tanking capability. she also synergizes with the caduceus staff, so she can be very self sufficient, and hit from farther away! flayn does very well. the major penalty is a lackluster spell list and significant investment buy in.
-hapi: she’s… weird. i like hapi quite a bit but she’s got it worse than lorenz in terms of stat growth. her personal ability makes her an extreme aggro target for monsters and she can’t even avoid their attacks, and the bonus damage it grants unfortunately isn’t better than fellow DLC mage constance, who hits harder just out of sheer momentum. for having a healing crest, she doesn’t have a particularly interesting white magic line. her dark magic grants her utility similar to hubert, but she’s slower and can’t quite strike like he does. sadly miss hapi has to be down here. id like to put her higher but boy did she struggle
-raphael: well, he’ll do his job. he’s only beat by caspar since caspar has a little bit better tools at his disposal, but they’re basically the same character. raph will do very good at punching the living shit out of things. starts off better than caspar, but unfortunately in my current run i have balthus so raph had to get benched
YOU CAN DO BETTER TIER
-bernadetta: she’ll work alright, but only with lots of attention, and her personal doesn’t seem to make up the difference. for a sniper she seems to have far less hit than her rivals in ashe and ignatz, especially since ignatz makes him more reliable. her crest doesn’t actually grant her much since it has such a low trigger rate and by the time it does work she probably already can double. also she gains no levels between pre and post skip which is hilarious but like. HELLO? ive also been told she has the worst starting stats. personally, i only use her on BE runs. i know she’s a popular character and a lot of people rank her highly for persecution complex and the fact that she learns both encloser and deadeye, but deadeye is unreliable in maddening and she’s a lot of work to keep up with the others.
-cyril: he can become a killer, he honestly does really well, but he starts so far behind you need to invest a significant amount into him. i don’t recall him having a particularly stellar combat art line either, but if you choose to put in all the work of catching the kid up, he will do well. but it’s not worth it most of the time. i use him on church route runs bc it feels right. on other runs, you’ll already have someone who fits his niche--the guy becomes a wyvern rider, and the likes of sylvain can do much better in this line.
-linhardt: kind of a shittier flayn, without fortify or rescue. lackluster spell list for both black and white, and terrible growths. he’ll do fine if you play eagles, but if you’re going to import a healer, mercie or flayn is the better option.
-anna: oh lord, anna is difficult. her offensive stats are horrendous. flayn hits harder than her. with her unique stat line, inability to get supports, weakness in authority, and all around just odd set up, anna is not a reliable character and you should use yuri instead. they’ve basically got the same crest.
DIDN’T USE SO NO OPINION TIER:
-hanneman
-manuela (heard she’s not good anyway)
-alois
-gilbert
-catherine
-shamir
(yes there’s a trend to this which is past FEs have trained me away from using prepromotes!)
and there we go! im still biased towards GD but the characters who do best are the ones who have a clear class line to follow and a statline that matches it.

So I was minding my own bussiness when suddenly I realized that the Black Eagles have zero crests that come from the Ten Elites (in contrast to the Blue Lions who have 6 students and the Golden Deer with 4 students) but instead have only Saint crests (Ferdie with Cichol, Lin with Cethleann, and Bernie with indech's - and don't start me on noone having the macuil crest) and I didn't know what to do with that knowledge so. I had to share it. Like. Why.
This is sort of like when I was told that the Black Eagles have the most students without Crests, and my kind of “wait, really” but like -
Hubert, Caspar, Petra, Dorothea - none
Linhardt - Cethleann
Ferdinand - Cichol
Bernadetta, Hanneman - Indech
Edelgard - Seiros
And Constance, who’s originally from the Empire, has the Crest of Noa, one of the lost four Saints, which her family’s records falsified as the Crest of Macuil, as she says to Edelgard in their B-support.
Not only that, but these are all minor Crests for all of the above except Constance. Nobody gets a major crest of Seiros and the Four Main Saints.
Mercedes and Jeritza are the only ones from Empire noble families with a Crest from the Elites, Lamine.
I mean, Seiros founded the Empire, so one considers that maybe the amount of time that she and the other Saints spent there, maybe that....maybe that’s got something to do with it? Frankly the more I think about this the more confused I get, just generally. How do Crests get passed down, actually?
Lin, Ferdie, El, Bernie, and Hanneman have the Minor Crests for Cichol/Indech/Cethleann/Seiros, not the major. Lin in his B-support with Flayn tells her that the Major Crest of Cethleann is beyond rare. Hanneman tells Seteth in their C-support that Seteth is the only person who’s ever been confirmed to have the Major Crest of Cichol. Rhea obviously has the Crest of Seiros, and so does Jeralt.
There’s never any mention of Seteth having had any other children, and Flayn obviously has none - the Cichol-Cethleann bloodline ends with them, but their Minor Crests still got out into the world, but never the Major. Did Indech or Macuil have children? Could the Crests of their brother and niece carry down through their bloodline? Unless something really out of nowhere comes up in Silver Snow, there’s no reason to think that Rhea had any children, but the Crest of Seiros is still passed down through the Hresvelg line. Where do these come from? The Ten Elites obviously it makes perfect sense that those Crests got in their bloodline from stealing the actual literal blood of the children of the goddess, but like....where the fuck did these ones Seiros/Cichol/Cethleann come from? Did they do some blood transfusions during the war? Can a Crest gained via blood transfusion or hell, forcibly implanted on Edelgard/Lysithea, be passed down to any children? Does it only mutate into minor crests instead? Could Byleth have been born with a Crest of Seiros? Can Byleth’s kids have the Crest of Flames? How does this work??
I don’t know what any of this adds up to either but I needed to lay it out. No wonder Lin and Hanneman become obsessed with Crests to the exclusion of all else, this shit is wild.

Credits to @froggykind for the Linhardt and Ferdinand designs.... there are no manaketes in this game but I can dream...
These are doodles but damn imagine Linhardt and Ferdie as manaketes since they possess the crests of Cethleann and Cichol

Part 1: So I was thinking of other secondary Crest effects esp in a Modern setting (I was the anon that sent the ask about them before), and I think I've got something for the crest of Cethleann. Maybe it causes general drowsiness (not to a dangerous degree unless one is in serious condition).
Part 2: This aligns with Linhardt's general disposition, and in the Modern AU! (non-reincarnation, meaning the dragons presumably aren’t immortal) maybe Seteth's overprotectiveness could be explained by Flayn getting into an accident when she was younger and her crest making her go into a coma. This could also support her trauma of being afraid to sleep and never wake up. I was wondering: what are your thoughts on this?
Y’know I vaguely recall Lindhardt mentioning in a support that he does stay awake, he just mostly stays up all night (and that’s why he’s tired all day). Soooooo vampire crest? Makes the bearers nocturnal?
Or it could heal the user more quickly while they sleep? That might be interesting and could tie into something with Flayn.
Since we’re talking about secondary crest effects again though...
Can Cichol just be, like, the himbo crest? I mean Seteth has spent many years hiding his himboness but let’s be real we can all see it. And Ferdie? You look that poor boy in the eyes and you tell him he isn’t the prettiest himbo at the ball.

Re about past forging bonds -
Hubert talks to Alfonse about what being a Hero means in Fodlan, and mentions this about the 10 Dudes :
Correct. Though some families are believed to be descendants of the 10 Elites.
But they are redundant. When peoples from across the ocean tried to invade, did they save Fódlan?
My good Sir, when “people from across the ocean” tried to invade, they didn’t try to invade Fodlan, but to invade Adrestia.
Adrestia =/= Fodlan !
“yeah but when those almyrans did the same the evil lizard lady and all the losers from the land built a locket”
Because some people asked for help, given how those some people were not able to repel them.
Also, people with relics went on their merry way more than 400 years ago and made their own country, they don’t have any obligations nor duties to defend Adrestia?
No. The Empire crushed the enemy. And the Heroes' Relics are as useless as most of their owners.
Please ignore how Nopes retconned Leopold “I am super smart” von Bergliez to have a MAJOR CREST of Cichol and to use a sacred weapon tied to his crest of Cichol, and how this person managed to defend Fodlan, I mean, Adrestia.
But Cichol isn’t a hero/Elite, so I guess it’s alright?
You're right. I find the concept of Heroes odious, and their modern-day progeny to be worse than useless.
Solely by dint of their lineage, corrupt nobles rule over territories without any consideration for their subjects.
Hubert, you know your friend Caspar’s dad, and your friend Linhardt can also fall in this category? Even Ferdie and, if she had an Y chromosome, Bernie? They would rule over people because of their lineage?
Furthermore, Lady Edlegard has had to walk a path of suffering due to this foolish worship of Elites and Relics.
Uh... Hubert is talking about Uncle’s experiments? If so, why is this horrifying when Baldo and Waldi walked through the same path but had no ties to heroic legends of old, Elites or Relics?
Oh, I know!
It’s the double headed eagle’s standard!

french blue, wild watermelon, and granny smith apple?
french blue - after you two have gone stable, what kinds of dates do you go on?
- heh. stable. get it cuz ferdie likes horses.
the opera is a must. ferdie knows all the words and mana has her attention split between the opera itself and ferdie’s enjoyment of it. then they probably have a nice dinner afterward :)
wild watermelon - what’s both of your dream vacations like? do you agree on the location/activities?
- ok i just watched the seteth and flayn paralogue again and now i’m thinking about mana begging ferdie to take her to rhodos coast. she heard seaside, for one, and also that it’s an important place for saint cichol and she was like “hey ferdie has cichol’s crest, maybe i’ll go with him.”
i doubt he’s even been himself, but how could he say no to mana?
granny smith apple - if you and your f/o had to move someplace new, where would it be? why?
- probably enbarr so ferdie wouldn’t have to keep traveling between there and aegir so much. and there’s bound to be merc jobs for mana.
