“Never fear Brooklyn’s here” - Spot Conlon 1899
Race and the others all asking synder to donate 😭 AND HIM ACTUALLY DOING IT 💀
Kloppmann 😻 Him protecting Jack 😭 they totally butchered his roll in the bway show but honestly I see why lmao

Everyone holding spot back ☹️ honestly I would’ve just let him beat his ass
THE FACT THAT SPOT ACTUALLY HAD SCREEN TIME 😻

Crutchys laugh
“Extra extra Joe, read all about it” - Jack Kelly 1899
“Headlines don’t sell papes, newsies sell papes” - David Jacobs 1899
This wasn’t in the movie but blood drips heavily on newsies square is iconic
Ok this also wasn’t in the movie but the bloopers of crutchy mentioning the delanceys when they’re first introduced r so funny 💀
The fact Morris calls Weisel ‘uncle weas’ 😭 (I THINK DON’T QUOTE ME ON THIS 😔)
Jack on a horse,,,that’s it 😭 IT WAS SO SILLY LMAO
The whole cowboy thing with Jack is also a lil silly
Ok but Jack scabbing in this was like,,sm better done?? Don’t get me wrong I love the whole sellout thing in newsies live but cmon

Newsies UK Review (Dec. 3rd)
Brace yourselves because this will be long and rambling and will contain spoilers. I certainly haven’t covered everything or everyone, but I’ve covered a few of the things that particularly stood out to me and the people I felt particularly deserved a mention.
Just the whole set up. Shirtless Newsies getting ready for the day before carrying the banner started was a bonus, not least because it reminded me of carrying the banner starts in the film when they’re all in the lodging house getting ready. They were down on the stage rather than up in the scaffolding like on Broadway so I feel like you got a bit more of a scene setter and build up to it. And then one of them full on ziplines onto the stage, it was fabulous!! My friend who was with me described it as ‘a magic Mike entrance’ and whispered to me, ‘when are they gonna start stripping. Just the staging in generally was amazing. Having scaffolding all around so newsies could scale it at different points in the theatre as well as having the walkways between the seating was brilliant, because it meant all the chase scenes with Snyder could go through the audience and go up and down different levels, so like, Jack could run up a bit and escape then because they’d gone a different route, it was very clever. And during the World will know it meant that we had newsies marching on the spot right in front of us, sometimes turning to face us and I was grinning like a maniac, it was amazing!! There were 3 standing ovations. Three! I was expecting the one at the end, but the other two weren’t even at the end of the first act or something, they were both in sieze the day! One at the end and one at that moment when you think it’s about to end but they still have an extra bit to go. And it was one hundred percent deserved, the choreography was absolutely incredible. One of the guys did like a gazillion box jumps in a row, it was insane. Looking back at the cast list I think that was Ross Dorrington as Splasher but if anyone else who’s seen it could confirm or deny that would be great, as it is obviously hard to tell from a distance in the theatre. At first I thought this was gonna be instead of the ‘Ryan Steele spins’, but then we got those later on as well! There were even some break dancing style moves, it was ridiculously brilliant. I will say that I am a Javey shipper that has never truly understood Jatherine (which, disclaimer, may be partly because I’m a 92sies whore so I was a bit sore about the plot changes that introduced Katherine in the Broadway version, although I learnt to love her as I got used to the idea), but my god I changed my tune when I saw this performance. I don’t know what it was but there was just something different about Michael Ahomka-Lindsay and Bronté Barbé as Jack and Katherine. Part of me thinks it was just the way they kissed in something to believe in, y’know with his hands moving up her back and stuff, it was just *chefs kiss. But there was just something in their interactions as well, she was so snarky it was wonderful and you could just see it drawing him in. And like, when he strikes out at the beginning when he first sees her and she shuts him down I think you could see more of, her joy in doing that I suppose, and her amusement at him pursuing her that I feel was lacking slightly in the Broadway one. Like, you can tell more that her annoyance is kind of as much of an act as Jack’s postering is and I appreciate that because I feel you see the romance growing more rather than just being a sudden thing that happens. As much as I love Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay I just felt it properly for the first time with these two. And he gives her a newsboy cap at the end which was super cute. Each of them individually were just astounding in their roles and really managed to bring a different flavour to both Jack and Katherine which was really lovely to see. Matthew Duckett as Crutchie is a fricking revelation. It was Marty Belafski who had my heart as Crutchie - he was the first iteration I saw and it was him that made me fall in love with the character. With Broadway, I already knew Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and loved him as Crutchie as well. Now it’s probably Matthew Duckett who just is Crutchie for me. I loved that he was taller than Jack for one thing, like in the original film, and that he was just generally like, a little grittier than Broadway Crutchie? He had a bit more of the Crutchie from the film who says, ‘I don’t want anybody carrying me. Never’, and who nicks food of Snyders plate to give to Jack. A little less relentless optimist and a little more world hardened, which I really enjoyed. And it doesn’t hurt that he had lovely shoulders which I had a great view of, as I was sitting in the second row from where they had a break in the seating that the cast used to run through the audience as such. Very annoyed that I just missed out on getting a pape from Crutchie himself. He waved one at us asking if anyone wanted a pape, and all of us just sat there in shocked, happy excitement, without realising that this was actually on offer to interact with the cast and not just like, part of the show. He threw it behind him into the audience members in front of us to our consternation and was then like, ‘yeah, now you want a pape’, and someone in front of me did then get one. It was amazing, and I can now say to everyone going, and if I go again, say yes to the pape! They actually mean to give them to you! I didn’t actually believe they would make Spot Conlon a girl but I stand corrected! Not only Spot but the whole of Brooklyn. In my humble opinion, not quite the same as Spot being a tiny but menacing little guy, but still very cool and great fun. And I loved that the girlsies were like, actually girlsies. Like, some of them had skirts and stuff, they were meant to be girls, not just, women filling in the men’s roles, which I absolutely loved! I think I would probably have preferred it if all the boroughs were just mixed to be honest, partly because it meant a lyric change to ‘we’re the girls from the beaches of Brighton’ rather than ‘we’re the boys from the beaches of Brighton, so we don’t get the alliteration which slightly irritated my brain although obviously it would have been weirder if they’d all sung that when they’re meant to be girls, but also because I just feel like it would have made for a more accurate representation, although if they’d done that I think I would have wanted them to keep Spot as a girl. Ultimately though, I did understand why they did it like they did, as it really packed a punch, and it made sense why Spot wasn’t in the cast list as they obviously wanted to keep this as a surprise twist. It honestly was a great moment. King of New York!! It was phenomenal!! They swung from ceiling lights!!! Honestly it felt like a little homage to 92s when Damien lucero spins on the ceiling fan, as there was a moment when some of them did spins from them, as well as them swinging about like Tarzan on them. Honestly, I did feel like the choreography from this as well as sieze the day was better than Broadway. There were just so many surprises. Although Katherine did tap a bit she didn’t seem to have as much of a ‘moment’ as Kara Lindsay got, when the newsies are encouraging her to dance, so that was a shame, but they did dress her up like the Statue of Liberty which was wild and amazing. The newsies bringing on all the props! It was so good. Hilariously Katherine thanked them when they put together her desk for watch what happens, but my favourite was when they did Pulitzers office because they were all just lounging around for a bit before Pulitzer and everyone came on. I’m pretty sure on of them was was sitting in his chair at one point before scurrying off. It was great. Cameron Blakely was wonderful as Pulitzer. A great voice, and I just loved his portrayal of the character. Some funny moments because it’s Cameron Blakely but still managing to be very sinister when it counted. The line that really stood out to me from him was when he grabs Katherine’s arm in the Bottom Line Reprise singing ‘too bad you’ve no family, but you can’t have mine’. Oof. Davey was glorious. He was just so soft somehow, which was very endearing, although I was slightly disappointed that he didn’t seem to loose any of his clothes on the way as is the Davey tradition in both the film and on Broadway. Having said that, he seemed less buttoned-up, in terms of his costume, to begin with than either of the previous David’s. His exasperation at Les, like when he’s staring at the Bowery beauties or when he announces that he has a girlfriend, was continuously on point. And his beginning of sieze the day was absolutely beautiful. I’m still annoyed that Davey has no solo song though. Medda was fabulous of course! I felt there could have been a bit more of ‘wink wink nudge nudging’ over the nature of her relationship with Teddy Roosevelt, but essentially she truly understood the assignment. And her Bowery Beauties costume she wore for That’s Rich was gorgeous. Being previews there were a few sound issues which was a shame, and they’d run out of programmes by the time I arrived (how a theatre runs out of programmes I’ll never know, but hopefully those issues will be sorted out by opening night. Overall, an insanely brilliant night out - glorious show, stellar dancing and singing, still so thrilled that Newsies came to the UK and that I had a chance to see it, 10 years on from the Broadway production I truly never thought it would happen and I’m so glad that it did.

Ok buckle up cos I'm about to tell you why 92sies Santa Fe hits HARDER than Livesies and Uksies
Not to say that JeJor's Santa Fe doesn't hit hard, it does but for different reasons
First of all, in Livesies we have a Santa Fe (prologue) so we know that it's something Jack dreams of and wants to go there because he's feeling suffocated in New York. And I kind of always read that as a companion song to Carrying the Banner because that one puts Jack in the position of a leader right off the bat. He's feeling responsible for the newsies or at least the ones that live in the lodging house. It also makes sense because viewing those songs together it's clear that while Jack loves the newsies he's feeling like he's got no options no future in the city. He wants a breather, where he is not responsible for others, he's not being chased and put in jail for helping and protecting others. He wants to be the one who is protected. When Crutchie asks him "You got folks there?" He bitterly says "I got no folks, nowhere" and even though he's so defensive about it deep down he wants that. He might not had parents or had abusive parents and ran away from home we don't know that's but it's interesting that even though he says he doesn't need them he still created in his head that image of loving and welcoming comunity. That's why he's so SURE saying "Folks walk up right and say, welcome home son, welcome home to Santa Fe". For me it's incredibly important that he says "son" and "home". That is clear indication that deep down he is yearning for someone to take care of him, take this incredibly heavy burden of his shoulders and let him just be.
And in Santa Fe, he's even more frustrated with not being able to protect others. He lead them to think strike was a good idea and they got hurt. Crutchie is in the Refuge. And it's all. His. Fault. And later on that's why he decides to 'betray' the others because if Jack can protect others, if there is a way to ensure they will be safe he will take it, no matter the cost. And listen Jack isn't stupid, he knows he can never go there because there is no way that a homeless kid selling papers can get himself to Santa Fe but he needs this dream, because his family is here and he needs them to be safe but at the same time he's a KID and he needs to be safe too. And if noone is going to provide for him, well then he'll make up a city made of clay where he'll be free to play, to mess around, where he will be welcome and taken care of.
And in the end he stays in New York because he feels like he doesn't need to be the ONLY one that is responsible for the newsies and is the only one protecting them because the newsies, Davey and Katherine have his back and would do everything for him as well. He's still looked up to but he has definite help now in dealing with everything. He learns to rely on other people to help him and take care of him. That Santa Fe can be people if he lets them.
Now 92sies
Now in 92sies Santa Fe is placed after Carrying the Banner and we only have few comments in between how Jack wants to go to Santa Fe. Also, so far Jack is shown as someone who's looked up to, but mainly because he sells most papers and kind of just is? He's escaped the Refuge and that made him famous but so far in the movie there is nothing to indicate that he's the leader or feel somewhat responsible for the other newsies.
What is important what Jack says in those few comments about Santa Fe that precede the song is that he's got folks there. We can see that David thinks it bullshit and frankly so did I because why would his folks be in New Mexico and he was living in NYC hawking papers? But I say it's important he talks about his parents because the following scene, at the Jacobs is absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing a happy family, that little interactions they have during supper is like a punch in a gut for Jack. That's why he starts with (what always makes my heart twist):
"So that's what they call a family. Mother, daughter, father son. Guess that everything you heard about is true.
So you ain't got any family. Well who said you needed one? Ain't you glad, nobody's waiting up for you?"
And later on he finishes with
"So that's what they call a family. Ain't you glad that you ain't that way. Ain't you glad you got a dream called Santa Fe"
92sies Jack dream is not Santa Fe (neither is Livesies!Jack rather what it represents but it's different for them. Livesies!Jack wants safety and security for himself. He might think it's a little selfish that's why instead of saying it he just makes a whole ass place) it's family. Now you might say that, well Jack had, has and will have the newsies.
Well the thing is, that Livesies!Jack does, he treats them as family and sees himself responsible for them. 92sies!Jack doesn't.
First he's shown as just another kid, the camera focuses on him more of course because he's the protagonist but other than that he isn't much talkative with other boys. At the beginning only Mush asks him "How'd you sleep Jack?" But the others just do their thing and so does Jack.
In the evening when he returns to the Lodging he exchanges greetings with Race, and they are similar in a way. They just do their things. Other newsies either returned to their families or to the Lodging much earlier so it seems and they are the two independent ones who come and go and they please.
Even as a leader I questioned why the hell he's in charge. He seems to know as much about what he's doing as the next guy and he doesn't seem that component doing it. Why not give this role to Kid Blink? Or Mush or Crutchie or Race? (Missed opportunity to make it actually historically accurate but ok) Jack is popular, yes but why? He sells most papers. He escaped the Refuge, sure. (Although if I remember correctly it's not stated explicitly why he was there? Not like Livesies!Jack who was stealing for the kids there) I might be wrong so let me know.
But he's just there. He is part of the group but does not consider newsies his family. He's constantly looking for one and he thinks Santa Fe is the answer. He says "I'm alone but I ain't lonely. For a dreamer nights the only time of day" Santa Fe is security. It's "a feelings that time can never take away".
But 92sies Jack is not so sure that's it's going to be all unicorns and rainbows when he gets there. Unlike Livesies!Jack who is convinced that's the place, or trying to convince himself and Crutchie, Bale says:
"Santa Fe, are you there? Do you swear you won't forget me? If I found you would you let me come and stay?"
Will he also fit in there? Will he find his family? Will he have what the Jacobs have? He had this perfect picture in his head. He and his family, happy and then he's brutally faced with reality, well with Davey's reality and finally see that what he thinks is a pipe dream is normal for others.
+ West Endsies
I think that Michael!Jack intentions are much like JerJors although his Santa Fe is more like a fever dream, he barely makes it up that fire escape and it's not that just he's angry or resigned it's almost as if he can see Santa Fe right there and wants it to take him in into safety but I've only seen Uksies twice and it was a hot minute so if anyone wants to add to that please do

Chapter One: Lodging House (Spot Colon x Female Newsie)
Ok so I’ve been sitting on some written Newsies material for a while and I figured the new 2023 year was a sign to let some of it out. It’s a 92sies Spot Colon fanfic, and I’ll leave it up to you whether or not it’s good. I’m proud of it, you don’t have to read it, but I do hope y’all enjoy it! :)
(BTW there’s LOTS of spelling errors due to me attempting to write a NY accent! I also added a few characters and songs, and I will take certain suggestions and requests!)
Tumblr media
Ah, Manhattan. A place fer dreams ta thrive and die. I neva woudda thought that I’d have ta make a liv’n here, but we all can’t choose our lives. Be’n a resident of tha Manhattan newsies lodg’n house is plenty enough.
“Get up! Sell the papers!”
Ugh… morn’n already? My eyes squint as soon as my bed sheet is ripped off me.
“Morn’n sunshine!” A bright-eyed kid announces in my face.
I groan. “Hello Race. You’s lucky I’s ain’t fully awake yet, ‘cause if I was I’d throw you out tha window! You’s wake me up like this again, and I’ll see you’s banned from tha races fer good!”
“Aww, c’mon! Lighten up Beccy!”
I sit up and stare square in his eye. “Wanna bet?”
“Not this early in tha mourn’n!”
I groan again. Then I, very un-enthusiastically, roll out of my bunk and grab my clothes bag hidden undaneath (I know some would steal it just ta taunt a goil). I’m a night person myself, but I’s found it best ta start early. I also make sure my modda’s gold ring is still in there. Ah, life in The Newsboys Lodging House… with a few exceptions, o’course.
“Get up!” Kloppman yells at Skittery, who’s still asleep.
“I didn’t do it!” He jolts awake.
“What do ya mean, you didn’t do it? Get up! Carry the banner! Sell the papers! Sell the papers!”
Behind me I hear an argument already pann’n out:
“That's my cigar!” Race complains.
“You'll steal anudder,” Snipeshooter retorts.
“Hey, bummers- We got work to do!” Blink interrupts.
“Since when did you become me mudder?” Snipeshooter asks.
“Ah, stop yer bawl’n!” Crutchy says.
“Hey! Who ast you?” Everyone shouts back. I roll my eyes and try ta hide a smile. Mak’n my way ta tha washroom, I see it’s already bustl’n with boys.
“Mourn’n Boots, Mush, Blink, Skittery,” I mumble.
“Hey guys- it’s Becca! Give her some privacy!” Crutchy tries ta shove and make room fer me, but loses his balance. Luckily, I catch him before he can hit tha floor.
“Thanks,” he says in a small voice.
“No problem. Ya leg do’n ok?”
“Not tha best.”
“You’ll do fine,” I say encouragingly as I help him up. “Ladies can’t resist help’n a crip.”
“Alright, really guys- let Becca through! Give tha goil some room!” Mush yells. A path ta tha restrooms is unquestioningly formed.
“Thanks, Mush.”
“Anytime!”
“Now put a shirt on!” I holler as I walk away.
“You know ya like me!” Mush taunts.
“In yer dreams!”
I pull on my usual faded blue shirt, black suspenders, dark gray vest, black knickers, brown boots, and gray cap with my brown hair tucked undaneath.
Afta I’m done dress’n, I hear tha guys giv’n Crutchy suggestions.
“Try Bottle Alley or the harbor,” Mush suggests.
“Try Central Park, it's guaranteed,” Race inputs.
Jack flicks some shav’n cream at Mush and joins in: “Try any banker, bum, or barber.”
“They almost all knows how to read!” Skittery joins.
“I smell money!”
“You smell foul!”
“Met this goil last night!” Mush brags at me. I gag dramatically.
“Move your elbow,” Crutchy asks Boots.
“Pass the towel,” Racetrack demands, his face covered in soap.
“For a buck, I might!” Skittery jokes, dangl’n it outta Race’s reach. He stumbles and falls inta me, so I push him off.
Tha rest of us join in:
“Ain't it a fine life,
Carrying the banner through it all?
A mighty fine life-
Carrying the banner tough and tall!”
We all jump in line and file down tha stairs. I quickly grab a broom and sweep up tha dust, earn’n an approv’n smile from Kloppman.
“Every morning
We goes where we wishes!
We's as free as fishes!
Sure beats washin' dishes!
What a fine life,
Carrying the banner home-free all!”
I look ova and begin ta see tha rest of tha younga boys wake up.
“Hiya Becs!”
“Sleep well, Beccy?”
“Morn’n Joey, Dusty, Kenny, Skippy. Can’t complain- but I still can’t get a full night sleep. You’s sleep ok?”
“Yeah, but Skippy threw up. And he’s warm.”
I frown. “Must be a bug or someth’n. Leave him here ta rest fer taday. As fer tha rest of yous- don’t work too hard today, boys.”
I follow tha boys a few block ‘till they split up and continue ta follow tha olda fellas. It breaks my heart ta know that such young kids don’t have a family and have ta sell papes.
“It takes a smile as sweet as butter,” Jack states.
Crutchy adds: “The kind that ladies can't resist.”
Mush leans in, giv’n me a wide grin. I just punch him and roll my eyes.
“It takes an orphan, with a studda,” Race inputs.
“Who ain't afraid ta use his-” Jack starts.
“Fist!” Blink finishes.
We take off, run’n and jump’n through tha street, unaware of any odda passerbys. Next we have some fun and leap onta some barrels.
“Summer stinks and winter's waitin'.
Welcome to New York!
Boy, ain't nature fascinating
When you's gotta walk?”
We all run back inta tha street.
“Still, it's a fine life,
Carrying the banner with me chums!
A mighty fine life,
Blowing every nickel as it comes!”
 Crutchy sings:
“I'm no snoozer,
Sittin' makes me antsy.
I likes livin' chancy.”
 We add:
“Harlem to Delancey!
What a fine life,
Carrying the banner through the slums.”
We stop and notice tha church wagon com’n down tha street. We begin to walk ova and I see tha boys take off their hats. I’d do that same, but then my hair’d come out, and I’d get more attention than I’s need.
Some Nuns call out ta us:
“Blessed children.
Though you wander lost and depraved,
Jesus loves you.
You shall be saved.”
They hold out cups of coffee and rolls, and we’s all eagerly reach out.
“Just gimme half a cup,” Race begs.
Tha nuns always give me dirty looks ‘cause I dress like a guy, but I don’t care. However I do care when they’s neva give me any food.
“Something ta wake me up,” Blink asks.
“I gotta find an angle.” Mush hands me half a roll, which I take gratefully with a smile.
“I gotta sell more papes.” Crutchy holds up his hands.
 “Papers is all I got
Wish I could catch a breeze
Sure hope the headline's hot
All I can catch is fleas.”
“God, help me if it's not
Somebody help me, please.”
We jump inta an alley and join in togetha:
“If I hate the headlines,
I'll make up the headline
And I'll say anything I hafta.
'Cause at two for a penny
If I take too many
Weasel just makes me eat 'em afta!”
“Look, they're putting up a headline!” A group sings. I look where they’s point’n and see: Trolley Strike Drags On For 3rd Week. I groan.
“What's it say? That won't pay!” Tha rest follow.
 “They call that a headline?
I get better stories
From the copper on the beat!” We all jump ova tha fence and make our way tha tha distribution center.
 “So where's your spot?”
“I was gonna start at twenty,
Now a dozen'll be plenty.”
 “God it's hot!”
“Tell me, how'm I gonna make ends meet?”
 We sing togetha:
“We need a good assassination!
We need an earthquake or a war!”
“How 'bout a crooked politician?” Snipeshooter calls.
 We all shake our heads.
“Hey, stupid- That ain't news no more!
Uptown to Grand Central Station,
Down to City Hall.
We improves our circulation
Walking 'till we fall!”
I sing along, leap’n, dropp’n, and roll’n as I do.
 “Still we'll be out there,”
“Look, they're putting up a headline
They call that a headline?
The idiot who wrote it
must be working for the Sun-”
“-carrying the banner man to man!”
 -”Didja hear about the fire?
Heard it killed old man Maguire-”
 “We'll be out there,
Soaking every sucker that we can!”
“-Heard the toll was even higher!
Why do I miss all the fun?”
 “See the headline:
Newsies on a mission!”
Kill the competition!
Sell the next edition!”
 “While we're out there-”
We break inta jump’n around tha square.
“-Carrying the banner through it all!”
 “A mighty fine life,
Carrying the banner
tough and tall!’
“I was gonna start with twenty
But a dozen will be plenty
Would you tell me how'm I ever
Gonna make ends meet?”
 “See the headline,
Newsies on a mission!
Kill the competition!
Sell the next edition!
We’ll be out there, carry’n the banner in the-!”
We all stop and look ova at Morris and Oscar Delancey, tha two guys you most neva wanna see.
“Dear me, what is that unpleasant aroma?” Race jokes, fann’n his face. “I fear tha sewer might have backed up over tha night.”
“Nah, that’s too good a smell. It must be- tha Delancy broddas!” Crutchy taunts.
“Hiya boys!”
Oscar sneers at us, then shoves Snipeshooter ta tha ground. “In the back, you lousy little shrimp!”
I grit my teeth and step up ta fight, but Jack pushes me behind him
Race shakes his head. “It ain’t good ta do that. Ain’t healthy.”
“It ain’t good ta call people shrimps, unless you’s refer’n ta tha family resemblance of yer brodda here,” Jack points ta Oscar.
“Hey, who here’s up for a bet that Cowboy can take ‘em?” Race asks around.
“I’ll take it!” I speak up.
“Well if it ain’t Kelly’s baby sista,” Oscar sneers at me.
I sneer back. “Well if it ain’t Weasel’s goon and his dumber-than-a-box-a-rocks brodda!”
He tries ta grab me, but Jack steps in between us.
“That’s an insult!” Morris says.
“Yeah, it is.” Jack leans in his face. “And so is this!” He swipes Morris’ hat and takes off run’n, mak’n tha Delancys chase afta him and earn’n a laugh from everybody.
While Jack goes ta taunt tha Delancies, I go inside tha distribution center and hear:
“ Go! Go! Come on! Get tha lead outta yer pants! Come on! Move it! Move it!”
I walk in and smile as I look up and see tha yell’s origin. “Hey, Flix! How’s it go’n?”
“Not now, Becs! I got these numbskulls ta work with! Don’t push it- you’ll have yer papes!”
Flix deals with print’n tha papes, and I likes to annoy him wheneva I can. When I see Jack again, he’s still run’n with Morris’ hat. Typical.
I also see a pair-a newcomers, who are a bit surprised and confused ‘bout Jack’s behavior.
“What’re you doing?” Tha olda one asks when Jack runs up ta him.
Jack looks ova his shoulda, then back at tha kid. “Runn’n!”
I smile wide and run ova ta join in tha crowd watch’n Jack take on Morris:
“Go get 'em, cowboy!”
 “It's a fine life
Carrying the banner-”
 “You got 'em now, boy!”
 “It's a fine life
Carrying the banner-”
 “Go get 'em, cowboy!”
 “It's a fine life-
Carrying the banner!”
 “You got 'em now, boy!”
 “It's a fine life-
Carrying the banner
It's a-
Go!”
We all break out laugh’n and walk up ta tha distribution counter.
“Ya got ‘em, Cowboy!” Race punches Jack’s shoulda.
“You’re too kind!” Jack bows.
“You’re dead, Cowboy!” Morris remarks as he and Oscar retreat behind tha counter.
We all join up again in line.
“Oh Mista Weasel!” Jack taunts and rings the bell.
Tha window opens, and I hear: “I told ya before, the name’s ‘Whilesel’.”
Jack skims today's pape, while Weasel grows impatient.
“Well?”
“Back off! I’m inspect’n tha moirchandise!” Jack talks back.
I lean in. “Any good today?”
“As good as any old headline- noth’n new. But we’s gonna make it woik.”
When I pass Weasel my 50 cents for my papes (very stiffly, mind ya), he says:
“Ya know kid, you really shouldn’t be sell’n. People see a goil in guy’s clothes and they get uncomfortable. Maybe try the workhouse-”
“I paid ya my money, now give me my papes!” I pound tha counter. I’s neva gonna work in a sweatshop!
“Watch it, toots. You wouldn’t want another… reminder, would ya?”
Rats. It’s tha Delancies again. Their ‘reminder’ I got last time was a black eye that lasted a whole week!
“I’s leav’n! I’s leav’n!” I bark at ‘em. I start ta go, see’n as I’s got a while ta walk. My sell’n spot’s tha furthest away aside from Race’s.
Behind me I hear: “Didja miss me, Weasel?” I have ta smile. Jack loves ta get on his nerves!
“Good luck today, guys,” I call.
“See ya, Becs.”
Oh yeah, that’s me. Rebecca “Becs” Carlyle, tha only goil newsie resident of tha Manhattan Newsboys Lodging House. Harlem and Jersey gots a few goils, but theys ain’t so friendly. Tha only friends I’s got is tha ‘Hattan newsies, along with a few from Queens. Odda than that I’s never been outside of New York. Our leader and my big brodda, Jack, says he wants ta go ta someplace called ‘Santa Fe,’ but don’t got the money for it. That’s how dreams die: ya wake up with a slap in tha face called ‘reality’. Now we’s just give up on dreams and sell papes. It ain’t much, but it’s a liv’n, and a family-a sorts.
Alright, time to get to work.
Chapter 2 will be out soon, I promise! If you have requests, please let me know! :)

Looks horrified
So what you're saying is there were probably alot more disabled newsies then just critchie
that’s actually exactly what I’m saying.
crutchie morris was a real person (thank you to the amazing anon who pointed this out to me), with a real limp and crutch. this can either be attributed to polio or injury. he was one of likely hundreds of children to teens who walked with an aid, or was without a limb, whether due to sickness or injury on the job. and if it was injury on the job, it could be from the factory machines or the trolleys.
so, yes, there were a lot more. enough that disney even talked about it through crutchie in 92sies, about the number of children using crutches and mobility aids on the streets (that little moment with jack during carrying the banner). also, I doubt disney would have added crutchie if he didn’t represent such a large amount of people and history.
makes you think a little about the history of abused kids in the workforce, right?

Melody’s Movie Reviews #1: Newsies (1992)
Hey guys. Welcome to the very first post of Melody’s Movie Reviews.
Today, I’m going to be reviewing Newsies (1992). Yes, the original movie version with Christian Bale. I watched for the first time at the beginning of the year and I enjoyed it. And then, I watched it again just four months ago
Here were my exact thoughts while watching Newsies (1992):
Hearing Max Casella’s voice at the opening really made me excited.
I felt so bad for all these little boys sleeping on top of the statue without any shoes on their feet.  It was pretty heartbreaking.
Boots is literally me when I don’t want to get up. All the boys are basically a mood for anyone who isn’t a morning person.
Me and my mom were watching this, and she was disgusted at the fact that Snitch had his feet on Itey’s face, and they were both dirty.
Christian Bale is adorable in this scene.
And of course, Snipeshooter takes Racetrack’s cigars for no reason. Ugh! Snipeshooter always gets on my nerves. No wonder he’s my least favorite!
Carrying The Banner starts playing and I’m loving every second of it. The choreography and the chemistry with the boys. It’s so obvious that all the boys vibed together in real life off-set, and that’s one of the thing I love about this movie.
Oh, geez, it’s those Delancey brothers. And they go picking on Snipeshooter for no reason. Snipeshooter isn’t my favorite, but he still doesn’t deserve it.
Racetrack really said “only I'm allowed to pick on Snipeshooter.”
Jack’s play-fight with the Delanceys is very entertaining to see. A
In this scene, we’re introduced to Davey and Les. I can already tell that I’m going to like this.
I love how these boys mock Wiesel by calling him Weasel.I would do the same thing.
Les is sooo cute when he sits next to Jack! And their interactions are really sweet!
I like how David doesn’t want anything to do with Jack at first, but Les instantly connects with him. Also, the part where Jack squishes his face is so cute!
Instantly as the newsies sell their papers, Pulitzer comes on the scene.
Even Seitz has more common sense in his little finger than Pulitzer and his cronies combined.
Oh, No! Here comes big jerk Snyder the Spider. My mom didn’t know why he was chasing Jack, so I had to explain it to her halfway.
Ann-Margaret is amazing as Medda. And I loved her interaction with Les. It’s so adorable!
Here’s where we meet the Jacobs family. I love how everyone takes a liking to Jack. And I especially love how he takes a liking to Sarah from the very beginning. Les singing “Lovey-Dovey Baby” in his sleep is so funny!
This is where Jack and Davey become friends. And this is where Santa Fe starts playing. And let me tell you how excited I was when that song played. 92sies has the best version of Santa Fe. Christian Bale didn’t have to go so hard, but he did!
I will never forgive Kenny Ortega for cutting out the lasso scene, especially since Christian worked so hard on it.
This is where The World Will Know starts playing. It’s a great song, and 92sies’ version is the best one! Everyone did such an amazing job!
This where we meet Bryan Denton, and he has such chemistry with David. Also, David is so adorable in this scene when he’s blushing! I knew that Jack and Les would be kicked out the doors, but Jack is a badass as always in this scene. So is Les!
This is where we meet Spot Conlon for the first time. To be honest, I thought I was going to hate him, but then I instantly started to like him!
Les repeating “real hoity toity” is so freaking adorable. Matter of fact, everything he does in this movie is so adorable!
Seize the Day is just starting and I’m already pumped. David Moscow really went hard for this number! And he didn’t have any dance training at all!
The little newsies during Seize the Day are so cute!  Especially Boots, Les, and Flipper!
Jack making faces at Weasel against the window never fails to make me laugh!
I was literally screaming when Crutchy got taken away to the Refuge.
I’ve only seen Ten-Pin for two seconds and I really don’t like him. The way he insulted ed Crutchy by calling him a g*mp is absolutely disgusting. Movie Jack didn’t take well to that! Musical Jack just called Crutchy a cr*p without any qualms!
Aaaannnnd here’s Big Jerk Snyder!
The boys singing during Seize The Day (Chorale) sound like a choir of angels, and I’m loving it. The choreography is absolutely amazing and it reminds me of Michael Jackson.
It’s so adorable how the little newsies made drums for this number.
Annnd here’s Spot Conlon and Brooklyn! I was clapping when they arrived! I was cheering when they won and Denton took the picture!
This is when King of New York starts playing! The tap dancing is amazing, but I bet the costumers were thinking “Those kids are ruining the tables.”
I always skip this scene of the confrontation between Snyder and Crutchy because I can sence that something even worse is gonna happen.
Sarah and Jack didn’t even have that many scenes together, but they had more chemistry than musical Jack and Katherine did.
I really like Seitz. He knows that what Pulitzer is doing is wrong!
Ooh, the Rally scene (aka, the scene where everything gets real). And I was singing along during High Times, Hard Times. Also, seeing Medda with all the newsies was so entertaining to see! They’re just vibing!
Aaaand here comes Big Jerk Snyder, again. I can tell that things are gonna go wrong, again!
Seeing Racetrack being brutally attack made me so mad that I shouted out “NO! Leave Racetrack alone.” This scene pissed me off the first time I saw it!
Pulitzer and Snyder just piss me off already.
I can tell that Jack has been broken down during the Santa Fe reprise.
The scene where Jack scabs breaks my heart. Everyone is pissed off at Jack and Mush is more sad and heartbroken!
I really hate Weisel!
Jack kicking the Delanceys’ butts for messing with his girlfriend and his best friends made me root for him, even after he scabbed.
This version of Once and For All is a lot better and catchier, especially since there was no unnecessary electric guitar.  The way every working kid in New York came together, whether it be a chimney sweep, or a sweatshop kid, makes me very happy! It shows that child labor hurt everyone, not just the newsies.
That part where Jack nearly leaves for Santa Fe really got me!
And now Jack made Les cry!
Seeing Les cry was really heartbreaking! I would’ve hugged him and cupped his chubby cheeks!
Everyone’s just standing there waiting to get their papers and then suddenly, Jack comes back! And then he makes out with Sarah!
I love how Spot rode back to Brooklyn in a carriage!
Yeah, I love the movie version better than Broadwaysies and Livesies!

Ahhhh waves so I really don't know much about tommy boy! Teach me!
My favorite is probably elmer or race bur I love them all.
Uhhhh it depends are we talking 92sies or livesies? Broadway version I'd say brooklyns here is a bop. I also love seize the day Ben does it so inspiringly and either once and for all or letters from the refuge.
From the movie I love kony carrying the banner and santa fe.
Ahhhhh uh idk I have so many thoughts. I like them but I also just like them as best friends or qps. I prefer race with spot or albert/spot/race.
Have you seen it live?
Okay okay okay I love talking about my little guy *cracks knuckles*
So Tommy boy is (canonically) one of the most feral newsies
He acts tough and always seems ready to fight, in the proshot at least his arms are always flexed out and he seems like the kind of guy who would pick a fight with anyone if he's angry
On the other hand he is literally a cute puppy ??? Again I'm talking about the proshot because it's the one I know best, but just watch him during KONY he is always grinning wildly or looking at the others in awe when they're dancing
Other than that he is also a realist, judging by his og line in CTB ("it's getting bad out there") and him scabbing before Seize the day because he knows the strike might go wrong
Also he seems to be a rather introverted guy given that is very quiet for most of the proshot, which might seem a bit contradictory with the "tough guy" part but he's really just a big softie on the inside
Anyway that's why I loved him at the beginning, but he really became my fav with uksies because 1- Jack bromage's verbal and physical comedy are amazing and 2- he gets a really interesting character arc ! If you're interested I made this post not long ago with my thoughts on his character development
Also yes I did get to see it live a few weeks ago !!!

🎭 92sies, Bwaysies, Toursies, Livesies or West Endsies?
👔 Favorite Newsies Outfit?
🎶 Favorite Song?
🎟 Favorite Cast Member(s)?
🎭 currently west endsies but livesies will always have a special place in my heart
👔 okay pulling specifically from livesies for this one, the outfit katherine wears in kony is definitely my favourite (her something to believe in one is a close second though), also really love the outfit medda wears for thats rich in west endsies
🎶 king of new york - i love all the group numbers in but that's my favourite (carrying the banner is a close second)
🎟 okay some of my faves are jeremy jordan (aka the reason I'm a fansie), kara lindsay, akb, josh burrage, aisha de haas, ryan kopel, honestly though its so hard to choose ahh I love all the casties. I'm more partial towards the livesies cast as that's the one I'm most familiar with but I love everyone who's been in the show

ok actually i want to talk differing characterization for a minute bc the last time i watched 92sies was years and years ago and i didnt know enough to pick up on the real reason i disliked it so much at the time which now that im rewatching: jack is a completely different character in the movie vs the musical. like. totally different guy.
jack in the musical is the leader of the newsies because he cares-- a lot. he keeps them running smoothly and this is established immediately as having been the case for a While. they all respect and admire and listen to jack: this is established immediately with the fact that he sleeps in a different place than everyone else (its JACKS penthouse not jack and crutchies so i figure crutchie staying there wasnt actually a regular thing) and then we even get in carrying the banner "jack says to change my spot" which tells us they go to him for advice when they're struggling. hes implied to be one of the oldest newsies operating and he's a Good leader. when they start talking about having a strike he thinks it over for long enough they make a joke about how long he's taking and he never underestimates the seriousness or severity of this task. he's got his thing with katherine but it's always clear that their budding romance is his secondary priority: the newsies are always first to him because he takes care of him, which makes the reprise of santa fe so devastating and is why he seems to have quit being a newsie entirely after crutchie is taken to the refuge: because he feels that he failed them utterly and refuses to risk doing it again.
movie jack is literally just some guy. he sleeps with everyone else he takes ages to wake up hes not in any way a leader of the rest of the newsies until the strike, and any "leadership" he is exhibiting is the same kind popular kids have in high school and talented athletes have in sports: they respect him because he's clever and talented but he's no different from the rest of them and everyone understands that. where musical jack goes for oscar for stealing crutchie's crutch, movie jack does it for fun. movie jack goes into the strike completely blind and has to be Told he needs to think about it and then doesnt 😭. movie jack's character arc is about Becoming a leader-- he starts off as irresponsible and reckless but (im assuming idr the second half of the movie and im not actually done w it yet) over the strike he grows into his new role as leader and becomes more responsible
anyway in short ive grown a lot since i was 12 and no longer require all versions of movies/shows/books/etc i like to be perfectly identical to whichever i saw/read first and i rlly thought the reason i hated the movie was because it didnt have katherine plumber pulitzer and not the fact that the main character is an entirely different guy. i mean i still wish katherine was in the movie but that is absolutely not why i disliked it so much

okay, the fandom’s in a bit of a situation, let’s debunk.
i never said you’re not allowed to criticize livesies.
criticize it all you want!! we should do that, there’s a shit ton of issues with it. i tried to be as general as possible in the post i made, saying “don’t overlook issues in one production instead of the other” because i was hoping it’d get across my point that i would do the exact same if the situation was vice versa and people were talking about 92sies instead of livesies, but obviously i didn’t, so let’s talk about it.
you are absolutely right to criticize some aspects of livesies. you are absolutely right to criticize some aspects of 92sies. what you are not right to do is criticize one version, which in our situation is livesies, but it could be 92sies and my point would still stand the same, just to prove that the other is better. because guess what, it’s not, both productions had huge issues, some being in the plot, some being in casting choices, some being in the way female characters were portrayed, one production having some problematic points about it does not make the other better for not having them, cause there’s other things wrong with it that the other managed to handle better. what i was addressing was people overlooking issues in one just because it was the version they preferred. these are real issues that affect people’s real lives, (mine included as a neurodivergent queer trans person from a working class family in a country that has never in o aspect been kind to anyone but the social norm and, let’s face it, was never good with its money either). i also wanna say that this has never actually been about albert, me saying things like “yeah when albert was mentioned i snapped” or “say something about albert dasilva smh” i’m only joking. i’m sorry i didn’t make that clear. you’re allowed to dislike the character if you like, obviously, i just didn’t agree with the post that said he was an attempt to replace blink with a non-disabled character, i thought they were actually quite different and the only traits they shared was being a little stone cold and impulsive. if this was a situatuion like the winx thing where they replaced flora, a poc, in that new netflix series with a ‘new’ character who had no difference to her except being white, i would agree.
now, i wasn’t going to talk about any of these actual points, but there’s a certain one that just felt really personal to me and i think i actually wanna talk about it, and that’s crutchie being carried at some point after carrying the banner in livesies. disabled people sometimes will need help to adjust their lives to a society morphed around abled bodies’ needs and that will never make them any less strong. just like how i will sometimes ask my friends use tone indicators while texting, or will sometimes ask them to adjust the topics or the volume and intensity at which they’re talking in in verbal conversation, crutchie accepting some help with his friend to catch up with the other newsies does not make him weak. that’s all i had to say about that.
lastly i actually want to apologize to maggs, i wasn’t planning on addressing any people personally and i’m pretty sure she’s blocked me but just in case she hasn’t or someone can pass this on to her, i’d still like to get this out. it was never my intention to hurt her feelings, or say she’s a bad person, i just didn’t think what she did was right. in my post i tried my best to not attack anyone personally and stay on topic, keeping it strictly about the issue that bothered me. i never meant to make it seem like i was implying she was some horrible person, that is not up to me to decide. so, yeah, if anything i said felt like it was there to hurt you i’m sorry. i should’ve been more clear about it.
okay, that’s all i wanted to say on this. i lowkey know this post is going to get me a lot of backlash which, like, fair, it’s a post on the internet that everyone can see, they’re allowed to react to it how they like but, yeah, i was still a little reluctant about posting it because it’s really not what i need right now so if anyone says anything on this and i don’t respond, i will, just give me some time please, i will.
side note: i don’t usually make posts that long, especially when i’m upset so if some words or expressions or grammar aren’t correct forgive me, english isn’t my first language, thanks.

Crutchie comparison: Livesies vs West Endsies
Haven't seen 92sies in forever and I don't want to be inaccurate (might add it later). Also I've only seen Livesies and as for the West Endsies I've seen it only twice so I'm relying on my memory.
Livesies!Crutchie
AKB Crutchie gives major younger brother vibes which is funny cos I'm pretty sure AKB is older than JerJor but, not because of his disability or even his sunshine demeanor it's just vibes. He gives younger brother vibes. He is a realist, all of the newsies are, it would be stupid if they weren't but weighing on the optimist side. He smiles a lot, his shooting from the slingshot is almost like supervised by Jack, like they are messing around, older to younger brother. His comments are purely comedic, so are his expressions. He's the kind of person that you cannot be mad at. He is strong, he can take care of himself and he isn't babied by the others but at the same time if there is an opportunity to help Crutchie out they jump to it. Like at the beginning of Carrying the Banner, Albert carried Crutchie away to make a quick gateway. And during the Letter from the Refuge his "tell the fellas to protect one another" is kind of, like he doesn't want Jack to worry about him but worry about the rest of the newsies.
And honesty I don't mind, it seems to work for him well however I would have loved a glimpse of a really mad/angry, resigned Crutchie and I would have loved to see him swear. He's a teenage boy living on the streets of New York, he's sunshine but let's be reasonable, he's gotta be as much of a little shit as the rest of them and this is what I'm missing from the screen.
West Endsies!Crutchie
He sounds like a Muppet (affectionate), he's tall, lanky, feral, gremlin child. It's been confirmed that he's already said "fuck", "shit", and called Jack "dumbass" behind his back.
He's smiley alright but you cannot convince me that at the same time he's not a menace, as much if not more than any other newsie. It's abundantly clear that Crutchie and Jack are equals. Equals in a sense they both are watching over the newsies. When I went to see it, just before Watch What Happens when they were all leaving Davey called Les, who was following Crutchie.
"C'mon Les, our folks will be waiting"
"Right, they've got folks"
It was somewhere between, Crutchie ready to steal a child and already being very protective over Les, like he would be with other newsies (minus the loving bullying)
He's also shown, if I remember correctly more around other newsies not just mainly Jack. He's not just dependent on Jack he's very much independent and they do their own things during the strike.
This Crutchie is also a realist more more bitter one, he's rougher around the edges, he's not just voicing the concern - that they should just buy the papers by new price and get on with their life's so they won't starve - he's talking with conviction.
He's also the brain behind all of the shenanigans, you cannot convince me otherwise. In Carrying the Banner he's shooting his fellow newsies with various levels of accuracy but he's doing it from the rafters, in hiding just to mess with them. He's the kind of person to gaslit all residents of the Lodging House into thinking he hasn't done something even if there are witness claiming they've seen him do it. He'd rob you brind and then smile and you start wondering if you actually got robbed or not.
He's shown to be more than capable of taking care of himself, even though they haven't changed the scrip it's just a vibe that Crutchie will not hesitate to beat you up. His Letter from the Refuge, just as heartbreaking as AKB has a different meaning, it's as if he's reminding Jack that he's got responsibility to the rest of the newsies to take care of them and keep the spirits high when he's not there to do it and to help to do it.
Again if I remember correctly he calls to Jack when they got beaten up and some of the newsies (I assume Finch and/Romeo? I don't remember) consider coming back for him, halfway up the main isle when they decide otherwise, Crutchie calls to them to run and save themselves.
When he gets out of the Refuge he's wearing a police helmet as if he's already made friends with everyone there/or stole it, playing with the whistle, annoyingly so. He's also the first one to whistle, loudly when Jack and Katherine kiss at the Finale, absolutely not letting Jack have his secrets and just teasing him.
Also, he's a disabled character played by a disabled actor. Also he's wearing dungarees and has a whistle.
I'm not saying this Crutchie is superior because I love them both, but this, this is what I've been missing, the realism (as much as you can have it in a Disney musical) but still.

Hello Tumblr! It’s Bryn :)
Edit: my official introduction and pinned can now be found here.
I am pretty new to this site and I am looking for friends to talk about newsies with! I love both versions, but I am a 92sies fan at heart. I watched Newsies (1992) for the first time when I was 7 years old! I grew up on Newsies and have watched it more times than I can count. It means everything to me!
This blog will basically be me talking about what I love most non stop: newsies. So if that sounds like something you’d like then drop a follow! An ask! A message! I’d love to talk and get to know the tumblr newsies community! I’ll be out there a lot, so I’m sure we’ll cross paths. Any reblogs would be appreciated to help me find my newsies people <3
I follow from my main: @vintageburnham so if you get a follow from that blog, it’s me!! My newsies aesthetic account is @newsies-jackie where I post my favorite aesthetically pleasing newsies content, whereas here it is a free for all haha.
Right now I am working on a post to be pinned so we can get to know each other better :) carry the banner!!

Ik you're the resident 92sies expert, so I have a question-
Who is Patrick and is he okay?
Maybe I just haven't watched it enough times to catch it/figure it out but this is round four and I'm still lost on Patrick. His mum (who's looking for him while The Boys are getting food from the nuns) makes me sad.
As far as I know, Patrick isn't a character, just his mother is.
I know a lot of people HC him to be Spot, probably because Spot is Irish and Patrick being the patron of Ireland, plus the fact that he's basically the only named newsie she wouldn't have seen during Carrying The Banner.
I'm not sure if there's any other information, but maybe @letter-from-the-refuge knows something more?
