I remember opening night was a nightmare for the Manhattan and Flushing newsies. The person playing Davey got a nose bleed when he first laid eyes on Jack (funny timing if you ask me) Crutchie threw up. One of the Flushing boys threw up, another got a nose bleed, another injured his leg, another threw up on stage, and I passed out😭 We were really going through it-

just so you know, my six year old brother wants to be Romeo from newsies when he grows up. Not just any actor, not just any newsie, he wants to be Romeo.

edit: this is so freakin’ important to me because my family is filipino and Nico DeJesus, the proshot actor of Romeo and the version of Romeo we see everyday is filipino too. I love that my brother can see himself on stage like that.

NR Manhattan

Manhattan is the main setting of Newsies Rewritten, following the actions of Lower Manhattan’s strike before spreading to the rest of the borough and then the city.

Led by Jack Kelly, Manhattan pairs sub-boroughs under one leader with those leaders reporting to Jack. (Ex. Jack runs the entirety of Lower Manhattan, Racetrack runs the Green Village sub-borough paired with Albert running the Lower East Side. Jack mainly runs with Green Village and Race acts as his second.)

Leaders of Manhattan usually model themselves after entertainers, Jack’s being a dime novel cowboy while Race may model himself after Ted Sloan, a popular horse jockey of the time.

Within the sub-boroughs, newsies run in groups of 5-6, a trend started by Jack. The small groups or “crews” run like an outlaw gang (wild west reference.) Jack doesn’t handle any disputes unless they disturb his own peace, which eventually more and more often as we get closer to the strike and when Jack needs to unify the group.

Manhattan wears sky blue to indigo, as purple was an expensive color and Manhattan was known was known as the financial district. (Violets were for Brooklyn Newsies as it was a more reddish tone). Most newsies can’t afford to buy shirts to represent their borough, but many mentors who save up pass their old shirts down to their apprentices whenever they get themselves a newer shirt, funnily spreading the tradition of “the more blue you wear, the more Manhattan you are.”

i feel like jack didn’t want to be alone like in the past, he wanted a friend and a partner to help be the “leader” of manhattan and crutchie was always there for him. they’re both around the same age and when jack was first starting to become a leader it was all too much for him, so he brought on crutchie to help him out when things were getting to be a lot.

or maybe crutchie didn’t do well inside with a big group of kids. we don’t exactly know his background and it might have made him really uncomfortable. crutchie confided in jack and jack invited him to live in his penthouse.

Race gives up food for other newsies constantly to the point where he was on a totally not date with Spot and they got bread, which as soon as he ate he instantly voimited up, then after continued to vomit bile because his body had so little food that his stomach had started to eat itself and to survive the acids that were supposed to break down food that were instead breaking down his stomach needed to be out of him before he actually died.

Plus bonus distressed Spot playing with his hair and patting his back as Race vomits into the brooklyn river and very confused comforting attempts because he has no clue what's happening but Race is vomiting and crying

this might just be a me thing, but I’m such a fan of characters not referring to themselves with their nickname. like. they’re doing a whole inner monologue, and it’s sad, and depressing, and generally pathetic, but then their best friend calls them their nickname and it’s like. oh. yeah :)

because they may suck in their own heads. they could very well be the worst person alive in their own little brains. but when someone they care about calls them that one thing with that one tone of voice, suddenly they suck a little less. suddenly they’re less of a screw up. suddenly the serotonin hits their system and it’s like watching a light come on.

they might not be good enough, but the person everyone thinks they are is, and secretly, that makes them feel just a little bit better.

Personality:

Atticus is short tempered, clever, theatrical, sassy, blunt, brutally honest, and a jokester. He gets mad very easily, but to quickly calm him down, give him a mirror. He has his mother’s eyes and nose so it makes him relax fairly quick. He can come up with solutions to problems fairly quickly or figure out the situation he’s in fast. He’s very theatrical in that he exaggerates all his movements, and such them with so much emotions. He’s sassy and petty, not sure how to explain it. He’s blunt, he won’t miss a beat to say something. He says the truth, even if it hurts, not that he really cares that it hurts. He makes a lot of jokes, and is a really touchy person. He’s very much in denial about his sexuality..He displays himself as someone without negative emotions like sadness and grief with isn’t healthy so he’s very overstimulated in the strike. He has a lot of trauma that makes him hallucinate his dead family members, and he tends to be delusional on other things too, so when he’s drunk or sick it’s really funny.

Past:

A whole lot of gorey deaths. He was born into a rich family of 7 in Brooklyn that goes bankrupt when he’s 7. His father would be really pushy that he’s perfect and would hit his wrists with a ruler if he wasn’t. In February, 1892, his father jumps in front of a train with him watching whilst screaming that it’s his fault. A month later, him and his older brother, Riley, are on a roof with his mother, who says she hopes that him and his siblings die soon so she can see them again before backing off the edge. Riley follows suit pretty quickly. Atticus ends up not knowing how to get a job and resorts to stealing, ending up with him in The Refuge with Jack. Though they don’t escape together, they meet again when Atticus escapes and joins the Manhattan newsies at age 9. It doesn’t end well, and Atticus flees to work in Queens, which ends up with him leading them rather than the old, toxic leader. He also finds his now youngest sibling, Elizabeth there.

NR!Borough Leaders!

Howdy big kids! Here’s the semi-official designs for the Newsies Rewritten Borough leaders! I wanted to draw them for a while now! These are also F2U designs as long credit is given to this account or to @flinttflakes as I will occasionally draw something there.

More info under the cut!

As each borough post mentioned, newsies color themselves by borough to show solidarity and pride of where they’re from! Manhattan is blue, Staten Island is green, Queens is yellow, Bronx is orange, and Brooklyn is red! Anyways, about the leaders:

Jack “Cowboy” Kelly: Jack’s design was based off Herrick’s Highschool’s Jack Kelly, played by Tristan Surajbali (he was so good. I love him to bits.) Gave him the icon blue shirt mixed with the OG Jack Kelly red handkerchief around the neck and the cowboy hat.

Cora “Aussie” Foster: Aussie is an oc by sundaymorningtv on tumblr. Not having a description from them, I just envisioned Aussie being a redhead with curly hair and it looks pretty good!

Georgina “Georgie”: Georgie truly belongs to olitheheadphoneskid23. As Georgina has a Greek origin, I went with a Greek appearance and also gave her the waistcloths to kind of show it.

Julian “Smalls” Hunt: Smalls is based on Julian DeGuzman from the live broadway recording, so he is Filipino. His outfit changed the most as I wanted it to be more aligned with the Bronx’ orange color and different from Georgie’s yellow.

Salvatore “Spot” Conlon: Spot’s designed is based on Tommy Bracco and Gabriel Damon for the most part, you can’t really tell there was a Bracco influence on Spot as he’s wearing the OG Spot’s clothes but once I get close up shots it should look more accurate!
