Sometimes you're digging through an old box and run across a photo of @neil-gaiman from SDCC 1995.
This is especially curious since I wasn't at SDCC in 1995, and have never met Neil Gaiman. I believe this picture was taken by the manager of the comic shop where I worked at the time, and that he'd interviewed Neil for a segment on the comics-themed cable access show he hosted.
Which then reminded me that cable access was a thing once upon a time, and was the functional equivalent of YouTube in the 1990s. Which is to say, you *could* just set up shop if you wanted to, and mostly no one would actually watch your show except for very stoned people who had nothing better to do at 2 AM. But then sometimes well-known authors would grant you a few minutes for an interview because why the heck not, earnestness is to be rewarded from time to time.
[I'm not sure who the other chap in the picture is, but I believe he was a friend of the comic shop manager]

Channel 1 via www.MNN.org - Music, Travel, News - Arts & Culture
As written about in Billboard: "Alternative To Clips On Cable by Kim Freeman Billboard Magazine March 17, 1984 NEW YORK---Year-old BackBeat Productions hopes to break new ground in the video medium with it's first project, "The Jon Hammond Show." Currently airing on Manhattan Cable's Channel 3 and San Francisco's public access Channel 25, the program is a half hour of computer generated graphics synchronized with original jazz-fusion and rock music. Hammond's voice and his tapping boot are the only human intrusions during the show. "It's an alternative to the conceptual and concert footage videos. We're delivering an art form." says the show's host, BackBeat's co-founder Jon Hammond. The company also functions as a label, and Hammond says the broadcast will be a vehicle to expose artists on the BackBeat roster. Hammond say's he's close to securing slots on public access channels in New Orleans, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston and plans to recoup investements by syndicating the show to national networks if and when it gains an audience. His partner in the venture is former Crusaders guitarist Barry Finnerty, who wrote the music for the first program. All songs on the "Jon Hammond Show" feature BackBeat's studio band of Finnerty, keyboardist Hammond, drummer Steve Ferrone and saxophonist Todd Anderson. KIM FREEMAN"

The Eric and Mike Show segment with Squid
Between 1992 and 1995, I co-wrote, co-produced, and co-hosted a cable access TV show, The Eric and Mike Show, which aired on Bedford Cable Access in Bedford, MA. It was my friend Mike and I doing comedy skits, having local guests and local bands on. Now a clip from that show has actually surfaced on the internet for the first time (to my knowledge).
To back up: I was raised on SNL, MTV, David Letterman, The Ben Stiller Show, and Rolling Stone magazine. All of those influenced me immensely. As a teen, I thought it would be cool to produce a TV show. Mike and I approached the cable access station and discussed what it would take to get a TV show. Mike and I came up with some skits. Along with our director Andrew, we shot the show (on VHS) and edited it (on cuts-only VCRs). We had local guests on and local musicians as well. I was super ambitious and watching the show now, it’s better than I sometimes thought it was.
In Summer of 1994, while taking a Summer course as Boston University, I frequented Guitar Center on Comm Ave. I soon befriended employee Scott Palmer, who told me about his funk-rock band Squid he was the bassist for. He gave me their CD and I invited them to be on the show. In Sept. 1994, Andrew and I sent to The Rat. We filmed an interview with them and their performance. The segment aired on our Oct. 24, 1994 episode. In this clip, there is an intro from Mike and I, my interview with the band and then the bands performances (with closing credits over the second song). It was a time before every band having a website or a social media handle, so when I ask where fans can hear about their upcoming shows, they actually gave a mailing address and phone number to be added to their mailing list!?!
I didn’t keep up with Squid after that year. Sometime in the early 00s when I was living in NYC, my Mom gave me a letter that was sent to her house. It was from the Palmer family informing me that Scott Palmer had passed away and a memorial scholarship they were setting up. Bummer! Sometime in the early 2010s when I moved back to Boston, I was in touch with Scott Matalon about his production company Metropolitan Pictures. But it wasn’t until last year when I saw Scott in the Chet’s Last Call documentary that I realized he was the singer for Squid, who I interviewed on my cable access TV show in 1994. We had a good laugh about it when we reconnected. I converted from VHS to digital, the Squid segment from The Eric and Mike Show and he has shared it on YouTube. Enjoy!

Vaguely trying to imagine what Vox's room at the hotel would look like. He's not in there very often, so it's mostly just the standard look, but it's also where he dumps all the things he deicides he wants to hold on to. Weird little bug creations Niffty’s made for him, random pieces of technology from his work with Pentious, fidget toys that he keeps forgetting to return to the group therapy box... It's very messy and most of the stuff just sits there, untouched, but it's undeniably his.

Being a child of immigrants and/or spending extended amounts of time in countries outside of the one your family immigrated to is so confusing sometimes, especially with shows. Like, I don’t know what other people have seen or not seen. For example: I watched a LOT of Slugterra bc it was on the Teletoons network (Quebec network), but I’ve met like 3 ppl who remember it. Same with the TinTin movie, Astérix and Obelix, In the Night Garden, Detentionaire, Fangbone, Jimmy two shoes, the deep, are you afraid of the dark, Dragon hunters, etc. Also, having watched many of them in French (which I am very bad at, especially when I was a kid which was when I watched these programs), I have a rlly hard time explaining what actually happens and I only remember stills or the name in French instead of English. Anyways this makes it all sound like a fever dream to my USAmerican friends, i.e. “you know that show where it’s all like puppet 2D animation and the guy is running from his zombie school detention?” Or “remember that show where a bunch of people in weird costumes made noises and there were tiny people who marched outside their home?” Or “what do you mean you don’t remember the show about the big guy and the little guy on floating islands slaying dragons, one of which farted to fly?”
Anyways gotta love being second gen

So it look (and feels!) like the groundhog didn't see his shadow back in February. It was an amazingly unseasonable 17 C here yesterday, and it really feels like the start of spring - perfect excuse to update the Garden Lace Socks for the March Featured Pattern and Knit Along!
The pattern is 50% off for the month of March, plus, if you finish a pair of socks by the end of March you have the chance to win a Gift Card from Knit Picks (US/Canada only at the moment, sorry!) or 4 patterns of your choice from my web shop!
Other cool stuff to know:
The stitch pattern has both full charts and written instruction.
The pattern has a large-print version for folks who need it (this version also works with screen-reading tech)
It's non-gendered. Socks, like any other article of clothing, don't care what gender you are, the only thing that matters about if you can wear them are the measurements of your feet.
To that point, the pattern comes in two adult sizes, with a leg circumference of 7.5 (9) inches, or 19 (23) cm. Leg and foot length are also adjustable. Like most socks, they are designed to be worn with approximately 10% negative ease*
Sample is worked in Fleece Artist BFL Sock (sadly discontinued) in the colourway "Jade", and shown in size S. If you're looking for a yarn substitution, any wool/nylon sock yarn should sub in well for this pattern, or, you can check out Yarnsub!
If you're a Patron, you can download the pattern here
You can find all the details about how to enter the Knit Along on the Pattern Page, and if you've got any questions, please, drop them on this post or in the Ask Box!
*Negative Ease - where the measurements of the thing are smaller then the measurements of your body, and the fabric stretches to fit. So you want socks that measure about 10% smaller then your leg and foot circumference.

yknow the real irony is that i’ve legit never heard of Blue Clues before coming on this website and while i understand it’s an important thing for english speakers (? to make it large), and it’s really endearing to kinda just know it’s there, it’s been really funny reading in those brackets how Blue&Magenta are like. As iconic of dogs as Snoopy or Scooby Doo. I mean it with all the love in the world and no judgement because really there’s no real harm in that but i think english speakers will never truly grasp what did export internationally or not and it’s always funny to suddenly read up on what’s considered popular enough that it HAS to be known across the world vs what’s actually popular across the world yaknow

Wait I just realized I took pretty pictures of the double rainbow and the rainy sunset I saw on my walk home today, partially because I wanted to use them as digital painting refs, but now I can't look at them since my phone bricked itself earlier :(((
