#cameo shift
Text
Is there a term for a therian who's very susceptible to cameo shifts?
I know I'm a wolf, cat, cougar, and deer therian, because I get shifts, instincts and dysphoria related to them all the time.
but I get Cameo shifts A LOT and I know these are Cameo shifts cuz they show up for a bit (usually after I think about that animal for a while) and don't come back.

I wouldn't really consider myself an overly shifty guy most of the time but like,
Shoutout to that one time in lockdown where I cameoed wings for a whole week. That was wild

Parasitic
A short post about my cameo as a Filarial worm, a type of nematode, posted on Dreamwidth.
It's interesting, I've only ever seen the experience of a tapeworm, in term of real animals, but I've seen the concept of parasitic spirits a bit more in nonhuman spaces. Sunabi was such a creature, and I may make a twin post to mine describing their experience, but right now I don't feel like diving into something with quite that much baggage for me.

this is a few days outdated, but: looooove briefly getting cameo phantom neck feathers to ruffle and settle because my RP character, who doesn't actually have feathers but has the Vibes of them, had a Moment during a roleplay. singlet+ moments for real

I just had a fun cameo shift! I had the sail, tail, and snout of a SandWing (from Wings of Fire), and the shift is still going on
I’m now just stimming by messing around with the sail (by rubbing my back into stuff). And it’s a similar species to my kintype, so that’s fun too

"Alterhuman"
Maybe we should talk about how alterhuman doesn't just mean nonhuman identify-as stuff.
Because it's meant to cover more than that. It's for otherkind, therian, fictionfolk. It's for 'linkers, hearted people, those with flicker and cameos. It includes kardiatype, paratype, vaguetype experiences. It's both nonhuman and human-to-the-left, or even broader like archetrope.
Some have been using it as something exclusive for too much when it has always meant to be something inclusive.

last night i watched a video of a borzoi and i think it triggered a cameo shift? or a hyperfixation? or both? i’m getting borzoi-themed phantom limbs now, and i really want to learn more about the breed
(rest of post under the cut bc this got a bit long)
i am slightly questioning if this is another theriotype instead of a cameo shift, bc i’ve been having muddled phantom limbs for about a couple weeks now and borzoi ears in particular resemble the phantom ears i’ve been feeling. it’s way too early to tell for sure though, and iirc i rarely had borzoi-like shifts before recently. it’s probably a cameo shift. i suppose i’m just sad to think that this feeling might end, since it feels so comfortable and me right now. i’ll just have to wait a while and see if this sticks.
and tbh, it may not even be a borzoi — the ears are the same shape (as is the body, and the fur feels right), but i’m pretty sure my ears are upright, and in most of the pictures i’ve seen, borzoi’s ears flop down. so either there’s a disproportionate amount of photos with floppy-eared-borzois or i might be another breed of dog that just looks similar to a borzoi. (i’ll continue to call myself that, tho, unless i find a breed that matches better.) i know borzois have the ability to prick their ears up, so maybe i’m just doing that more often than most borzois would? maybe the upright ears are because i still feel like a fox, it’s just milder rn and being overshadowed by borzoi-ness?
a borzoi tail also fits extremely well too, which is another thing i’ve been having trouble with recently. the fur on fox tails have been feeling too thick to be mine, even with a summer coat. but it didn’t match any of my other kintypes’ tails, as it still felt waggable and like it had fur. so i was kinda lost on what it was supposed to be from. but this one matches perfectly
as for mental-shift wise: i feel pretty much the same, though somewhat happier. which is caused by this shift, since nothing else particularly elating happened today, and i get happier the more i think about being a borzoi. i also keep feeling the urge to press my nose against windows and to lay on the floor in the typical dog-ish way.
there’s also some small, subtle difference between my personality as a fox and my personality as a borzoi — i don’t know how to describe it. i guess the best way is that the personalities are different colors? kinda? maybe personality isn’t the right word, maybe it’s more like attitude, or perspective, or way of thinking. like the thoughts tilt away from each other in different colors. i’m not describing this well
i have less species dysphoria than i usually get. when i’m a fox, which i am most of the time, i always feel too big and bulky in a human body. even when i’m a bidepal fox, i still feel much too tall. as a borzoi, i still feel *kinda* bulky, but the overall shape fits WAY better.
if any further developments occur, i’ll reblog with the updates. hopefully this sticks around for a little while, bc it’s pretty fun to exist like this

Relating to Animals
I was visiting some friends and family and a few of them brought their dogs along. These dogs have been around each other quite a few times and took off chasing each other when they arrived. Tails wagging and paws impacting the soft grassy dirt. Walking under tables and greeting all the humans.
Now, I am not a dog. I do not feel as if a mammalian identity would feel anything other than incorrect to me. I do not experience feelings of large ears, long snouts full of teeth or thin, bony tails dense with fur.
But as I watched them I felt a strong, difficult to identify, feeling. It took me back to times from my childhood. Running and playing with my siblings, racing them to the edge of the yard. Humans and animals really aren't so different.
I sat calmly in my chair, socializing with the other people and watching the dogs run and play. I wanted so strongly to run down to the woods, the water's edge, feeling the impact of motion as my feet hit the ground, my sneakers not too different from paws when running. If I let my mind wander far enough, I could imagine myself smaller, quadruped and covered in short fur, running and playing and wrestling with them.
My posture would be more birdlike at the edge of the yard, arms raised raptorlike or folded slightly with hands in pockets. Moving my weight from my heels to the balls of my feet to walk on my toes. Head darting around observing the area, listening for wind and creatures, watching the distance.
I am not the most socially adept, perched on a chair near the edge of the table, just close enough to stay within the conversation. At that moment I would rather socialize by walking and running with the other humans like when I was younger, like animals.
Would I have felt any different if they instead brought pets like cats or leash trained, domesticated budgies and parrots? Do cats socialize like that if they know each other? Running and playing or walking together or laying down in groups? Chirping and calling and flying together? Preening each other's feathers?
I think I would have felt that same kinship, that same animality. Wanting to walk with the cats or sit down next to them on the grass. Feeling a deep longing to fly with the birds but being held down by gravity and my human body. I think the impossibility of flight would hurt more than wanting to run with the dogs or sit with the cats. Watching as they fly up into the trees and over the pond where I cannot physically follow.

Today I felt rather shifty and instead of my usual domestic horse theriotype It was a cameoshifts for a mule. I got a vivid envisage and very mild phantom shift of the tail. I also really wanted a pair of their long ears to swivel around. This was all because that's the animal I had been talking about with a coworker and then became consumed with looking for Breyer models of them online. I am not really that surprised this happened but it is rather funny. For me all equines fall right into that blurry otherhearted territory.

Note
Therian culture is getting random cameo shifts that never happen again, and being incredibly confused. (I've had some really weird ones. 4 wings. Furred wings. Extra eyes. Two tails. Etc. But none of them happen again. It's weird)

Another fake magazine cover we made for Inky Paws 2! In this one we wanted to feature lesser talked about alterhuman experiences, because somebody has gotta be the dragon that does!
Photograph was taken by us years ago during our trip to Japan. Unfortunately we don't remember which garden it is anymore;;
If you haven't already, make sure you check out the rest of Inky Paws, it's free to download on itch.io right now!
