YEAH OKAY SO!!!!

in this au (and as i write ralsei in my canon always lol) the biggest thing that puts pressure on ralsei's life is the prophecy--it says a human, a monster, and a prince from the dark, and because it is a prophecy, and it is fate, is HAS to be true, and ralsei, as a darkner, a group of people who literally exist below the lightners, is charged with bringing this prophecy into fruition. she has spent her entire life ALONE, with nothing but this prophecy for comfort, saying that one day, ONE DAY, she'll get through this and she'll have friends. but yknow, that weighs on a person! its heavy and terrible and she has contorted herself to fit what fate tells her she must be.

and then for noelle, the big thing putting pressure on her? her dead siblings (dess and kris. kris isnt technically her sibling but yknow for ease of language thats what i use. also we know they arent dead but noelle and the rest dont). with their deaths means noelle is now the baby of the family, a family that is shaped by this great gaping grief noelle cannot comprehend, because when dess and kris died she was young enough she barely remembers them beyond like, maybe half-formed memories but she isnt sure if those are real or just what people have told her. shes expected to be grieving her dead siblings but really she just sort of. hates them a little bit. for going off and dying and now her mom and toriel are super overprotective of her, and she knows its her fault asriel never left to go to college and hasnt even left hometown, and its just. its rough.

so both noelle and ralsei have these Huge things that have defined their lives that neither of them want, but. too bad! WHICH LEADS TO EVEN MORE PARALLELS. slash foils lol.

because when it comes to the prophecy? noelle isnt supposed to be in it!!! while this au is sort of a roleswap in that noelle takes kris's place its not a roleswap in Any Other Way, which means, yeah, the prophecy is still supposed to be a human. and noelle, uh, isnt that! but she goes around and helps close dark worlds and is part of the delta warriors anyways, which is, for ralsei, this like, really scary point.

cause ralsei? adores noelle!! thats her best friend!!! ralsei doesnt know if she has a crush on noelle or wants to be noelle! noelle just does what she WANTS. she bucks against the pressures her family puts on her. she dives into the dark despite the fact that this world was never made for her. shes TRANS. shes a GIRL, and she can just DO THAT, and ralsei looks at her, and just. wants. in every sense of the word.

because noelle has all these things put on her like ralsei does--but noelle gets to slip out of them. noelle gets to be a person.

and ralsei, non-person, darkner: she doesnt.

she never will.

im going to talk about ralsei for a second bare with me

out of all the main characters in deltarune he's my favorite little scrungly. when i first played the game i liked him because he looked cute and mysterious and was funny. but there is obviously more to this little guy...

so!! after waiting in castle town for who knows how long, probably (definitely) alone if not for, i don't know, gaster telling him things from behind trees (total crack theory), he doesn't have ANY social skills and zero empathy. this doesn't make him inherently evil, he just has a harder time relating to people and that makes it hard for him to be friends with people.

his "purpose" is to assist the lightners in sealing fountains and banishing angels and he also has to be friends with them. he assumes to make friends you just have to be nice, but to him being nice is just acting out a script. he's saying "the good sentences". so when he's in an uncomfortable situation (after the sneo fight) he just says whatever works best for him, "don't think about it". this obviously doesn't work and susie manages to atleast calm kris down because she's a level 100 emotional intelligence master but atleast he tried i guess.

you could read this as him trying to disregard kris's feelings so that the player is happy and i guess it could be true but uuuuuuuhhhhh ummmmmmmm i just don't like that theory

there's evidence that he could know kris and the soul are different entities but i don't think he has any malicious intent he's just serving the lighner. at some point he could have to choose whether to side with the cool entity from super heaven or his friend kris. and i hope he leaves us in a mud puddle

enough about the player let's talk about noelle

noelle is extremely good at casting spells, she can cast heal prayer which is just as good as ralsei's and sleep mist which is better than ralsei's pacify because it works on multiple enemies instead of just one. and of course she's better than him at attacking (...everyone is) but in a SCARY way. one day he's probably going to feel like his friends don't need him anymore because noelle can already heal and pacify and she's even better than him, and they can seal fountains just fine without his help, and noelle knows how to be friends with people, and she's nice, and she can bake, and

while i want them to be friends i know he's going to feel left out if she joins the party long-term. the three already know eachother, meanwhile he just popped into their lives a few days ago. and he's been a paperweight the entire time. he probably feels left out already, kris and susie are friendlier with eachother, susie still thought he was weird the other day, kris probably still does, as soon as they find a better healer they'll leave him and have every reason to do so

he's very against violence but will do everything kris (...the player) tells him and i think this absolute obedience is another reason why kris doesn't like him that much. i also think the fact that they met two days ago is another reason why they're not already best buds. maybe when ralsei finds out they opened a fountain he's going to finally get mad at them and kris will appreciate that they're not being treated like a god anymore

ralsei is especially friendly with kris and wants their approval in every situation (what happens if you say mean things to him in the acid tunnel of love??? well the results are shocking) and it would make sense if it was because he was kris's old pair of red horns they might have lost in the closet. some people think he's the missing crayon but there's no emotional connection to that crayon so it would be less shocking

i don't think he's asriel and i don't think he's related to kris in any way (it would make a lot of their interactions very weird), he's probably meant to represent what kris wants to be, or what kris feels they should be, or just their monstersona lol

his friendship with susie is the best thing on planet earth and they're so funny together. at first you could see susie as a bad influence on him but she's NOT!!!!!!!!!!! she's teaching him that there's more to friendship than just being nice and that he can't just be kind to everyone and it's very very important and without her he wouldn't be as cool. and he's teaching susie that people DO want to be friends with her, he thinks she's sooooo cool and just cause she's scary (just cause she's a monster) it doesn't mean people shouldn't like her.

another important thing to note is that nobody aside from the fun gang (and noelle, barely) has ever so much as acknowledged his existence. the other darkners respond to him but only if he speaks first, and queen didn't even know there was another guy. he is alone forever and always

let's go back to the prophecy, he could straight up just NOT be the prince of the dark. the drawing doesn't match him in the slightest, he did wear a hood at first, but those weird shoes are only seen in his mafia outfit. but it's definitely also not lancer. lancer is the jack of spades and has never been called a prince the prince of spades straight up does not exist it could be someone else but not lancer (and then in chapter 5 they're going to prove my theory wrong i bet)

also he seems to be the only one to know about the prophecy (queen didn't even know about the roaring smh my head) but he assumes everyone knows. he probably has some other arcane secret knowledge that he just assumes everyone knows

about the difference between lightner and darkner merch i think it's because lightners are meant to be real ass people and you just... can't buy merch of real ass people. ralsei has so much merch because he's literally made to be blorbo so that the lightners can like him. put him in a cute outfit and leave him on a shelf he was made for this he was made for you

aside from all this cool lore stuff HE'S JUST SILLY!!!!!! his glasses are silly his attempts at being hip with the lightnerz are silly the things he says are silly HE'S MY LITTLEGUY!!!!!!

and if he becomes evil I'LL GET OVER IT AND DRAW HIM BEING EVIL!!!!!!!

if flowey is a foil to the player in one direction, where your status of being a higher power detaches you emotionally from the people in the world of undertale (thereby allowing you to do otherwise immoral acts like murder), then it can be said that ralsei is a foil to the player in the opposite direction. What this means, I don’t entirely know. just remember how ralsei keeps so much faith in the narrative’s plans for him

speaking of dr, there's something that really annoys me about how shallow the ship discourse around kr4lsei is. I'm not sure I'm 100% behind this for the same reasons i doubt toby will go full in with noelle's mom being abusive, ie "those are very delicate and complex topics to handle, does he have the time and space to deal with them in deltarune's story?" so take this with a grain of salt.

(warning for brief mention of incest, so I'm putting this under a readmore)

i think the discourse being framed as "thinking ralsei is presented as a romantic interest" vs "thinking ralsei is compared to kris' brother or like a family member" is incredibly stupid because those are... both true at the same time. yes, there's an unskippable "tunnel of love" scene, and it looks like ralsei could have somewhat of a crush on kris. but ralsei still 1) looks just like a dreemurr, 2) clearly plays, as a character, on our feelings and memories of asriel from playing undertale, as evident by their designs and their names being anagrams 3) i am 99% sure Noelle was going to say "that kinda looks like asriel" while looking at him eating cotton candy with Susie, and Susie herself suggests telling toriel he's "a long lost cousin". either way, if ralsei is meant to play on our feelings towards asriel, then as asriel's sibling, kris is likely gonna feel similarly.

are you uncomfortable? good! you should be. that's the point.

it's not random that the snowgrave route was framed and portrayed with the imagery of a wedding. first the freezering, then the thorn ring are explicitly compared to wedding rings. "we're just friends"/"we're something else". "YOU'VE BEEN MAKING [hyperlink blocked (...LoVE?)], HAVEN'T YOU?" noelle with whom kris had a strained relationship, whose feelings (platonic? romantic? we don't know) we brute force in what is the most chilling, manipulative, cruel iteration of chapter 2's story we could take... it's almost as if deltarune uses kris being forced into romantically coded situations they're deeply uncomfortable with as a way to showcase their lack of agency in the story.

and being pushed into romcom-like situations with a guy who looks like their brother works pretty darn well to follow that pattern, if you ask me.

now, if a forced romance with noelle represents their lack of agency in regards to the player, then... a forced romance with ralsei could represent their lack of agency towards Fate. The Plot/Story. unskippable cutscene, remember? not to mention ralsei's whole purposepilled shtick he clearly has a complex about.

this does raise a couple of questions about susie though, as the third option in the "who would you take to the fair with you" question, the one option kris seems to agree with, as well as being a character who is actively resisting the narrative.

because there's people who are very much FOR krusie, just as there are people against it, i doubt their getting or not getting together would work to represent kris gaining their agency back. and i believe i speak for everyone when i say that susie is going to play a huge part in that arc. either way, i'm curious to see how this develops.

idk! like i said, I'm not sure just how much toby is gonna go into this because it IS a very delicate subject. but it's an example of what i mean when i say "there's more to fandom than shipping" and "fixating so hard on Shipping Good Things" can be detrimental to analysis. I'm not cancelling anyone with this post, go on doing your thing whether it's kr4lsei or r4lsusie or krus1e. but if your first thought going into this was "I'm gonna ignore the part where the game compares ralsei to asriel because that would make my ship incest and that is Bad and uncomfortable" then... that's a very cheap way to interact with media? lol. sometimes being uncomfortable IS the point. god knows utdr makes you uncomfortable on purpose sometimes. ok rant over :P

(hi this is my first post ever)

So I was re-watching Andrew Cunningham's comment response stream to his video on Kris's SOUL, and he said something about Noelle during the Weird Route that caught my attention.

"It's sorta getting at like, rpg party members and how they don't necessarily make sense within the diegesis, like you can order them around, but how much free will do they have? it's lampshading that, by having you make Noelle do things she'd never do, and it… breaks her consciousness."

Got me thinking, we have Kris here as a metacommentary on what it's like to be a protagonist, but do the other 3 main characters exist as commentary on the idea of "party members"?

We have Ralsei, who just does what you say no matter what. He keeps saying this is a world where you don't have to fight, and calls out Susie for unnecessary violence, yet he won't complain when you tell him to fight. He's even surprised by the idea of you thinking of him as more than a lacky

"*H-huh? Y-you mean...

*(Y-you think of me as more than a lackey...?)"

In other words, this guy is like a Skyrim follower or something, being willing to just murder for no reason other than you said pretty please.

And then there's Susie, who rejects the idea of it being your party entirely in Chapter 1, and refuses to obey anything you say. She's the opposite of Ralsei in that regard.

And then there's Noelle, who only goes through with Snowgrave through manipulating her into thinking that she has to keep getting stronger, because Kris is her friend. And she doesn't think that her friend would ever lead her astray, or something like that.

initial sleep-deprived thoughts on the february newsletter:

- some memes referenced: doobie ralsei, eric andre, everyteenagers, warthunder leaks, cdi mario

- weirdly enough the sans “your mom” valentine creating a recursion of moms is really reminiscent of the joke book physics book recursion lol. probably doesn’t mean anything but jic

- i doubt the amv character is alphys. she already has valentines with her undertale version sprite depicted, and her deltarune counterpart is more focused on superheroes than anime.

- furthermore, upcoming characters such as elnina and lanino and arguably the strange letter character were teased. so i personally think this is a new anime-themed character, probably from chapter 3 with its focus on TV

- wait i just realized this would match up with the anime case in the garbage dump too

- as for the strange letter. my gut reaction was like many of us GASTER CONFIRM??!!?11 but turns out i just misremembered “SHOW YOURSELF! DELTARUNE!” as “SHOW YOURSELF! DELTA RUNE!” so scratch that

- the most compelling evidence against it being gaster is definitely the japanese version not matching his katakana quirk. using contractions and no line breaks in the english version too

- if it is a different character other than gaster it’s at the very least an intentional red herring making us believe it’s gaster... like the gaster reading seems completely intended.

- if they aren’t gaster or a version of gaster then they’re probably a character strongly connected to him, considering the illegible writing and the disappearance and redaction of the letter

- speaking of which, i haven’t seen anyone bring up [REDACTED] yet, who also talks in wingdings (assuming gaster is mysteryman and not [redacted]). probably not them but could be relevant

- as wandydoodles pointed out it could also be the “YOU’RE EARLY!” character

- “squint your heart” is an interesting concept. not sure we’ll find out what it’s referring to for a good while though. unless it’s just the soul

- “THE TIME IS GOING AROUND.” interesting phrasing. seems reminiscent of “the world revolving” or “take a ride around town” somehow but who knows the significance

- “EVERY DAY IS A DAY OF LOVE, IF ONLY YOU BELIEVE IT SO. DO YOU BELIEVE IT SO?” this also could be vaguely important. like belief determines things into existence?

- i don’t have much to say about the “there was someone i wanted to help” “i seem to have forgotten who” part bc like with the roaring knight this is just setting up a plot thread with virtually no context whatsoever at the moment. it’ll form the basis of investigations going forward but there’s nothing really we can determine with the information right now imo. like with the existence of the bunker and such, it’s just asking a question.

- the only context we have is “don’t forget” as a main theme of the series in the music title, sans’ lab, or occasional references to the phrase like spamton, but that really doesn’t tell us much of anything yet - this is just one more instance of that.

- the only part that helps us determine anything about the speaker is maybe “YES, IT’S QUITE IRONIC, BUT I SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN” which could imply the identity of the speaker is someone who is good at remembering, or whose job it is to remember or catalog things.

- “WAS IT MYSELF? NO... WELL, PERHAPS.” another interesting bit of dialogue that we really don’t have context for yet. though if this is some other piece of gaster this would be evidence towards it i guess

- “YOU ARE VERY ODD, RESPONDING OUT LOUD TO A LETTER.” uhhh this character seems to have the ability to hear our responses... and it’s odd considering the letter would already be written, possibly implying further timeline weirdness

- i’d also just quickly like to point out that it’s possible, if not likely, that this letter is addressed to someone other than us the readers. i doubt it but we do have some of the other valentines like ralsei or elnina/lanino as precedent that this could be written to another person

- “HAPPY NEW YEAR! OR, WAS IT THE OLD YEAR.” “NOW, PUT ON YOUR COAT AND WASH YOUR FACE! OR, PUT ON YOUR FACE AND WASH YOUR COAT.” this reminds me of the river person dialogue and the egg man dialogue and again, the whole cat state egg stuff in general

- according to reddit im not the only one getting unused string vibes off the “put on your face” line lol

- “NOT NECESSARILY IN THAT ORDER. OR, IN ANY ORDER AT ALL.” chaos confirmed??? (joking haha jk unless...?? but probably joking)

- “GOOD BY!” clearly means something and isn’t a typo given there are no typos in the rest of the letter... but i have no idea what. a pun maybe?

- the tense shift from present - “It’s a strange letter” “It’s more or less” “if you squint” “you feel you could understand it” - to past - “There was a sound” “the letter was gone” - is interesting and seems to support the cat state egg things yet again (“there is a man here” “there was not a man here”)

- actually... “Well, there is a man here.” “Well, there was not a man here.” “WELL, HAPPY NEW YEAR!” “WELL, IN ANY CASE,”

- overall i wonder if this character is associated with the past: an old timey letter, new or old year, the time going around, the character maybe having a good memory, the parent-y demand to wash up and put on a coat, and the shift from present to past tense?

- my crackpot first thought while first reading this (other than gaster) was “grandpa semi?” but that’s definitely not right lol

- they also might be associated with or affected by the timeline wonkiness going on: “HAPPY NEW YEAR! OR, WAS IT THE OLD YEAR.”, “THE TIME IS GOING AROUND,” the mixed-up order of coat and washing, the shift from present to past tense, and continuing a letter based on a response that hasn’t happened yet

- spamton love network: “the earth will stop spinning” might be a “the world revolving” reference... whatever “the world revolving” even means

- spamton love network: “where is the promise of perfection?” ???

- spamton love network: “my fears surging through me like suspicious waves” something with the ocean?

- spamton love network: once again i am operating on the assumption that the contents of the wayneradiotv spamton shows aren’t themselves canon yet have alluded to things within canon (eg. trouble dingle)

i hate the side of the deltarune fandom that is like “kris is evil!!1!1! kris is a psychopath who would kill everyone if we werent controlling them!!1!”

like, no. that is actually not factual. stop giving me fanon chara flashbacks. stop making kris out to be a sadistic killer.

this is really inaccurate and honestly kind of annoying. so, here’s some things that show how inaccurate the “kris is evil” speculation is:

kris has broken out of our control before and never directly harms anyone. they had the chance to. they DIDN'T.

the snowgrave route smile? that’s an illusion created by the fence. this may be an intentional illusion, but no, kris is not enjoying this. kris isn’t happy, kris isn’t indifferent. kris is noticed by susie and ralsei to look upset after the frozen chicken incident.

pie eating? tire slashing? dark world opening? if i was being possessed and i just broke free for a moment i would eat an entire pie and be a bit destructive. also, the tire slashing and dark world opening may have been deliberately planned. not sure what the plan is but they aren't trying to hurt people. like i said in my first point, kris did have a knife and instead of stabbing toriel and susie, kris opened a dark world and slashed the tires of their mom’s car. if kris was trying to hurt them, stabbing them with a knife is more efficient than slashing tires and opening a dark world.

at the end of chapter one, kris defends susie. if kris was a sadistic killer, they would’ve just watched. kris actively defended susie.

kris probably isn’t the knight (implied to be a bad guy.) the king and queen probably would’ve recognized them, as they have seen the knight before. kris is not trying to bring about the roaring (which seems to be the knight’s goal) and the roaring would kill everyone so… yeah.

kris tried to tell undyne about dark worlds, and it is implied that kris tried to tell undyne because dark worlds can be dangerous and they didn’t want people to get hurt.

i probably missed some examples but overall, kris probably isn't evil. sure, it’s implied that kris has a dark sense of humor and a mischievous streak, but kris doesn’t seem to want to hurt people. if anything, they seem to be a silly kind of pacifistic outside of our choices.

more fanon things i despise under cut (slightly problematic stuff in first paragraph, very problematic stuff in second paragraph)

oh yeah also, another common fanon misinterpretation. referring to kris with he/him pronouns. no what the fuck why? they are literally only referred to with they/them pronouns in canon. it literally is not that hard. where are you getting “he” from? where?

drawing kris with huge tits is another fanon misinterpretation! if you do this, i will block you. what the actual fuck is wrong with the people who do this? i hate to break it to the fan artists who do this but they’re a minor. that is implied to be nonbinary. but most of all they’re a MINOR. don’t do that. just don’t. that is gross.
