After hearing Taylor confess what you had heard Jack tell Urban left you in a daze. So, he in fact was telling the truth, however your best friend or someone who you thought was your best friend went behind your back and betrayed you. Never did you think that in a million years that she would do something like this and try to play innocent and continue on with life as usual as if nothing happened.
“Y/N, I know you're pissed at me and for good reason and I know I shouldn't have done it and…”
You immediately cut her off.
“Let me ask you something. Did you honestly think that you could do that and ultimately get away with it? Yes, me and him have our issues but stepping out on one another because of a disagreement has never been a reality. No matter how mad at each other we are. Bottom line, you took advantage of him being in a vulnerable stage. Even if I am still very mad at him, I'm going to defend him when someone does him wrong. And in this case, you were in fact… wrong.”
“I…”
“I thought that at least you were one of the last people I could count on to have my back, but low and behold you wanted my man for yourself. Everyone has treated me like shit since this first happened and since obviously my feelings don't matter to you or anyone else, there's nothing left for me to say. We are done here and you can forget about being their godmother. Lose my number and do not call me again for as long as you live.”
“Wait, just….. we're throwing our friendship away over a mistake I made? I confessed and I apologized. I don't know what came over me to do that and deep down I knew it wasn't right. But I just….”
“A mistake you hid from me for damn near two years and it wasn't a mistake actually. I had my suspicions, but I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, thinking no, there's no way in the world that my best friend would do that to me. You were in your right mind and knew what you were doing. And to think I trusted you. I've told you things In confidence that I have never told anyone else and you just….I need to leave. And you can pick up the tab since you want to be kissing other people's husbands.”
“It’s never going to happen again, I don’t want to lose you as a friend.”
“You've already lost me as a friend from the moment you tried to kiss Jack. It's not going to happen again, because you are going to stay as far away as possible from us. Did you really think that I would forgive you for doing something like that to me? You broke my trust and that is not something that cannot be repaired overnight. Oh, and one last thing, I knew what you did for months now and was just simply waiting for you to confess.”
Taylor was sitting there absolutely stunned and unable to speak. And it looked as if her eyes were starting to water.
“Didn't think it was going to take this long, but here we are. I'm taking my food to go and have the day you deserve. And you can save your tears for someone who actually cares.”
Without another word, you slid back from the table and went to the front of the restaurant to let them know that you wanted your order to go and that Taylor would be paying for it.
Once you got outside in your rental car, the tears started to roll down your face. You were proud of yourself, but also hurting. You felt that at this point, you didn't have anyone anymore and you simply wanted to go back home to Louisville or Atlanta rather and be away from it all. Because Atlanta was the only place where you felt that your life actually made sense. Louisville held too many memories for you and every single one of them had to do with Jack.
You had gotten back to the beach house in record time and stared at your phone contemplating if you were going to call Jack or not to let him know that you had talked to Taylor. Making your way inside, you sat everything down in the kitchen before making your way upstairs to the bedroom since your desire to eat anything was now gone. You picked up your phone and then shook your head and placed it on the dresser before the tears started falling again.
If you knew the shitstorm that would happen when Jack asked for you to marry him, you probably would have never done it. But who were you kidding? You knew deep down that you still would have said yes despite what was going on around you at the present moment. Did you see yourself marrying him again? Only time would be able to tell. The most important thing that you needed to focus on right now was trying to heal.
Jack played with his phone in his hands contemplating calling your older sister, Danielle, but had a strong feeling that she wouldn't want to hear anything that he had to say.
But he had to try.
He was willing to do absolutely anything to get you to forgive him and get him to marry him again. Even though you told him that marriage was definitely off the table, in the back of his mind and deep down he knew that if he wasn't able to get married to you again that he wouldn't get married again at all. You were the love of his life and he ruined it.
Before he backed out, he quickly hit her number to call her as his heart was damn near beating out of his chest.
And now he was hoping she didn't answer.
But luck wasn't on his side and she did.
“Hello?”
“Dani, it's Jack.”
“I know. I have something called caller id on my iphone.”
“Umm….”
“What do you need?”
“Um, for your little sister to stop ignoring my calls and talk to me.”
All Dani did was scoff before responding.
“And you think that you deserve to talk to her after what you did?” Dani asked and now Jack was starting to regret ever picking up the phone to call her.
“Dani, she's pregnant.”
“I am aware. I was there when she took the test. What's your point?”
“Dani, please. I just want her to talk to me so she can hopefully forgive me and we can get back together.”
“Jack, I told you to do one thing when it came to her. ONE. Do you remember what that was?”
“Take care of her.”
“Hmm, and did you do like I asked?”
“Well…”
“No. You didn't. Instead you hurt my baby girl and quite frankly, I’m surprised she stayed with you as long as she did. That girl LOVES you and would do anything for you, but instead you let your little fame get to your head. As much as she would call me crying all times of the night over you, you honestly think you deserve to be in a relationship with her again?”
“I know I've messed up and that I've hurt her, but all I want to do is make it right. I don't want anyone else or be married to anyone else. I didn't even want to sign the divorce papers!”
All Dani did was sigh before responding.
“You better listen to me and listen to me good. I will do what I can, but it is ultimately her decision. If she gets back with you, fine. I'll support it. If she doesn't, I'm also going to support it. But one thing I'm not going to tolerate is you disrespecting her. That is the mother of three of your big headed children so give her the respect she deserves. She's in Miami and I'm going to check on her so I'll do my best to see if she’ll talk to you. No promises.”
“That's literally all I ask.”
“But if she says no, unless it has to do with your unborn children, you better leave her the fuck alone.”
Not realizing that you fell asleep after confronting Taylor, you woke up to see that it was dark outside and had no clue what time it was. Grabbing your phone and wincing from the light as you put your password in, you saw that it was around nine at night.
Sighing to yourself, you threw the comforter away from your body to make your way downstairs to come face to face with your older sister who was currently sitting in the living room and scrolling away on her phone.
Hearing your footsteps come up behind her, she quickly greeted you.
“Lil Bit, I thought you were going to sleep until next week.”
“Uh? What are you doing here?” You sleepily asked as you rubbed your eyes.
“Don't you think I know when you need me?”
“I'm fine.”
“Are you?” She asked as you came to sit across from her.
You wanted to say yes, that you were indeed in fact fine, but the words just weren't coming out. Instead, something else did.
“I miss him and I HATE myself for feeling like this.” You breathed out while wrapping your arms around yourself.
“It's not like it was a one night stand. You two were MARRIED. And have known each other since you two were fourteen. That doesn't go away overnight. There's going to be ups and downs with healing from that. It isn't linear.”
“But I'm just so MAD at him for what he did. No matter how much he tries to take it back and apologize, what's done is done. And that song felt like a legit slap to the face.”
“He's not perfect, but neither are you. He definitely could have gone about it a different way, but what's done is done and the only thing you can do is move forward from it.”
“He called you, didn't he?” You asked as you were eyeing Dani.
“Maybe, maybe not.”
“DANIELLE….”
“He did and in not so many words, begged for me to convince you to talk to him and to stop ignoring his calls.”
“And? What did you tell him?”
“After I threatened him, I said that I would try to convince you, but no promises. He has a show in Miami in two days so I figured you two can talk then. If you want to, that is.”
“I don't know If I want to.” You answered being completely honest.
“You said you missed him.”
“I miss a lot of things, but I've learned to adjust.”
“You aren't adjusting. You're avoiding it.”
“I don't remember asking for a therapy session.”
“Look, I get that you're hurting and want to take some time for yourself, but you cannot keep this bottled up because you are legit going to explode.”
“What are people going to say if I take him back?”
“Who gives a flying fuck? That's your business and no one else's. Two people would be in that relationship and not the entire world.”
“But he legit disrespected me multiple times.”
“Y/N, if you are looking for me to tell you what to do, it’s not going to happen. In the end, this has to be a decision that you have to live with. No one else. Just know that whatever you decide, I will support you 100%.”
Before you answered her, you simply sighed.
“What venue is he performing at on Saturday?”
—-
Saturday finally rolled around and you had been on edge for the entire day. The time for you to leave was inching closer and closer and you were seriously about to back out of it altogether. Taking a deep breath, you gave yourself a once over in the floor length mirror at your black dress that you were wearing along with a pair of your Steve Madden sandals and was satisfied with how the outfit came together. You had straightened your hair earlier in the day, so the only thing left to do was to confront him.
You had been confronting a lot of people lately and wanted for this to be the end of it.
Dani volunteered to go with you and the two of you rode in silence to the venue with her taking quick glances at you to see that you were scrolling on your phone from time to time. Once the two of you arrived and made your way inside, Jack was already on stage and Urban had quickly spotted the two of you.
“Hi Urby.” You said as he engulfed you in a bear hug.
“Hey, didn’t know you were coming tonight.”
“I didn’t know either until two days ago.”
“He’ll be happy to see you. Come this way so I can take you two backstage so you can watch from the side.”
“Hmm, we’ll see if that still rings true after I talk to him.”
All Urban did was hold his hands up in defense before shrugging since he knew that you were just about at your wits end with everything that had been going on.
You and Dani quickly followed behind Urban and since everyone recognized you, you were able to get backstage with no problem. But you also knew in the back of your mind that your so-called ex-best friends were probably there as well, right along with Neelam. And of course she had spotted you.
“Y/N?”
“The one and only unless there’s another one that I don’t know about?” You quickly said to her as Dani stifled a laugh.
“Can we…?” She started to say, but you immediately cut her off.
“No. I’m here for one person and one person only. If I wanted to talk to any of the rest of you, I would have told you. I’ll let you know when I’m ready whenever that time comes.”
“I.. fair enough. You both can come over here to watch him from the side.”
It took less than five minutes for Jack to spot you standing on the side and he got the biggest smile on his face and you simply gave him a tight lipped smile in return. You did your part of willing to open the lines of communication, but if it was something that you didn’t want to hear, you were immediately going to cut it off.
Once his set was over, he quickly jogged off the stage towards you and opened his arms for a hug which surprisingly you actually returned.
You had missed this feeling.
“Can we go somewhere and talk?” You asked him and he quickly nodded as he led the two of you to his dressing room.
Once the door was closed, you let him have it.
“Babe? Is everything okay? What are you doing here? And I mean that in the best way possible.”
“Don't call me that, Jackman. You lost the privilege to do so. But let’s just cut to the chase shall we? You called Dani to get me to talk to you so here I am. Now onto my most pressing question, why didn't you tell me what Taylor did?”
Jack, obviously taken aback, cleared his throat before answering you. And all he did was rock back and forth on his heels before sighing.
“Because I didn't think you would believe me if I had told you when it originally happened.”
“But not to say anything at all? You were supposed to protect me, we're supposed to protect each other! I had the fakest person under my nose for the longest and you said NOTHING.”
“I…. I didn't know what to do. You already didn't want to be bothered with me and I didn't want to create an even bigger mess. Wait, she told you?”
“Yes and kept asking me before she did if you had said something to me first.”
“I'm sorry, and I know that I should have. I would never cheat on you no matter how mad I might be. You mean too much to me for me to do that.”
“Hmm, your actions lately say otherwise. You hurt me with that shit you pulled and should have come and talked to me.”
“I know and I don't have an excuse for it. I just wish we could start over and just forget that any of this ever happened.”
“Do you honestly think that you deserve another chance?”
“Dani legit said the same thing.” He mumbled before taking a seat next to you and grabbing your left hand which was still decorated with your wedding ring. Except it wasn’t on your ring finger.
He began to play with it as he was waiting for you to say something.
“How do I know that something like this won’t ever happen again?” You asked and that was when he finally looked up at you.
“Because we’re going to communicate better and be honest with each other about how we’re feeling. That was my biggest downfall.”
“Hmm.”
“And I need to put you first. You were the one who was with me when I had absolutely nothing and I lost sight of that. Anytime I needed you, you were there but I didn’t give you that same treatment in return.”
“I want to believe you, I really do because I miss you, but… I just don’t know.”
“Y/N, please. Things are going to be different this time.”
“Maybe, but I don’t know if I’m at that point where I want to find out or not.” You answered being completely honest.
“Well, how long do you think that will take? You know I’m willing to wait. I legit do not want anyone else.”
“Only time will tell.” You shrugged while looking at him.
When he didn’t say anything else, you simply let go of his hand and began to get up.
“Wait, where are you going?”
“I did what you asked and I came and heard what you had to say, did I not?”
“Yes, but…”
“And now I’m leaving.”
“Baby girl, just…”
“Just, what, Jack? Just what? You said your piece and I’ve said mine. When I’m ready to take you back, you’ll know.”
“I love you and I want this. I want us.” He said as he grabbed your hand and squeezed it.
“Yes, you’ve made that very clear and you’ve done it more than once.”
“At least just spend the night with me, let me take you out.”
“Maybe some other time. I’m pretty tired. I am pregnant, the last time I checked.”
“Okay, I get that. Some other time then.”
Jack then stood up and gave you another long embrace as he leaned down to kiss your forehead.
You then felt him cup your cheek and knew he wanted to kiss you. You wanted to kiss him too, but you definitely weren’t letting him back in that easily.
Instead of meeting his lips with yours, he met your cheek since you had turned your head and you heard him sigh.
“When I fully forgive you, you can give me as many kisses as your heart desires, but until then I need you to remember something for me.”
“What is it?
“Remember one thing, I'm not your girl.” You whispered against his lips before smirking and laughing to yourself as you made your way to the door of the dressing room.
“Drive Safe tonight, Jackman.” Was the last thing you said before you disappeared on the other side of the door leaving him absolutely speechless.

Regardless of your feelings on this project, now is the time to hammer away at city leaders to ensure it truly has equitable outcomes including a *lot* of affordable housing.
Some of the very valid concerns voiced about the project have been based on the cost of it, amid a great need for spending elsewhere on things like safe sidewalks and bike lanes. Others have worried about the long-term cost of maintenance. We've had these concerns too.
And then there's the question of equitable outcomes. This part of Downtown was the site of many urban-renewal projects in the mid 20th Century (from the Civic Center to the freeway and beyond) that displaced people, and that created a place that's occupied too heavily by car infrastructure.
Tumblr media
But there are other places in Atlanta where the interstates did major damage as well, and they aren't getting a "stitch" for repair.
Rebuilding it in a way that offers a sense of repair to the whole city -- and particularly to the lower-income groups who are most heavily affected by seismic shifts in urban fabric, such as freeways -- will require a heavy emphasis on affordable housing.
It needs to be written into the plan in a concrete, unshakeable way that avoids the mistakes we've seen in the Beltline with missed opportunities for greatness in affordability and displacement-prevention. Now that The Stitch seems inevitable, we have to do it right.

Sy
I hate being back on Jared's couch. I accidentally flashed his wife this morning because I kicked the blankets off in my sleep while having a very graphic dream about Riley that had my boxers struggling to conceal my raging morning wood.
Despite feeling like a nuisance again, the worst part about the situation is not being near Riley. I miss her even though she was never mine to miss. It's Tuesday and I imagine she must be home watching a movie on the couch with a giant mug of something hot and sweet.
She never did answer any of my messages but I know she’s alive because she dropped off her file for Don after I left the garage last Monday. The rejection stung but I got the message loud and clear.
Her work was so thorough that he took the file with him to the bank for the loan meeting. He was able to get all the money he needed and the repairs start next week. She also set up the social media accounts for the garage and so far it does seem to have helped. She’s absolutely amazing at this and whoever let her go from her old job is a damn fool.
The TV is on in front of me but it's muted because I'm not really following along so much as staring off into space in the general direction of the screen. My phone rings beside me and I pick it up without checking the caller ID.
"Yeah?" I grunt, annoyed that someone is interrupting my little moping session.
“Sy?”
I sit up from the couch, passing the phone from one ear to the other.
“Riley? Hey, I didn’t expect to hear from—”
“Sy,” she interrupts, “I— I’m sorry, I don’t have a lot of time. My phone is almost dead and I didn’t know who else to call.”
Her voice is thick with emotions and she falters over the words. It immediately sends my entire body on high alert.
“What’s wrong? Riley, are you okay?”
I begin to pace from one end of the living room to the next. Aika follows in a close heel position, her big brown eyes looking up with an intensity that no doubt mirrors that of my own face.
“I— I don’t know. I’m sorry, I know you’re probably still mad at me for what happened but I’m stuck out on Clavering Boulevard in Atlanta and my stupid car won’t start and—”
“Riley," she's talking so fast there's no room for a breath, "breathe for me, sweetheart." I take my own advice and let out a slow breath through my mouth. "Are ya safe where ya are?”
“I think so?”
I pocket my wallet and take my keys from the hook by the doors as I slip my feet in my boots without bothering to lace them up.
“Okay, stay put. Ya said your phone’s almost dead?”
“Yeah," she sighs.
“Then text me your exact location.”
I'm already in my truck, putting my phone up in the holder while the call transfers over to the Bluetooth system.
“Hang tight, sweetheart.” That’s the second time the endearment comes out of its own accord but it just feels right. “I’ll be right there.”
“Thank you, Sy. I’m so sorry to do this to you.” Fuck, that was definitely a sob.
“Don’t apologize, I’m glad ya called. I’m on my way.”
My phone pings again just as I pull onto the freeway. I haphazardly punch the cross-street into the GPS while I swerve around the few other cars on the road, speeding 20 miles an hour over the limit.
I play the conversation with Riley over again in my head. She sounded panicked but besides saying that she was stuck somewhere in a sketchy part of Atlanta, I don’t know what’s going on. Some stupid part of my brain is pleased that she called me and not someone else but the logical part of me knows that when your car doesn’t start, you call a mechanic.
The other thing I don't understand is why she thinks I'm mad at her. We haven’t spoken since that fateful night. The night I fucked everything up by letting my friends drag me to that damn strip club and effectively ruined my relationship with my roommate. When she didn’t answer my calls or respond to my voicemail about where she was I moved back into Jared’s place, cursing Luke the entire time.
I thought that maybe having me around would be intimidating for her. I figured giving her a bit of space would help her work through whatever she was feeling and that she would call when she was ready but she never did. I haven’t answered any of Luke’s calls or texts either so I guess I know how Riley feels. We were both betrayed by people we trusted.
I hope she hasn't gone into my room since I’ve been gone. The fact that she hasn’t called to complain about the fist sized hole I left in the drywall suggests that I might be able to sneak in and repair it while she’s out. I’d hate for her to lose her security deposit because of me.
I was so worked up after leaving that last voicemail. Luke had just texted me and he’d had the fucking audacity to say that us seeing each other at the club was a good thing. His exact words were you can finally stop lying to her .
After that, I wasn’t only mad at him. I was mad at myself. He’s right. I did lie to her. Every conversation we had, I pretended I didn’t know about her double life. Sure, she wasn’t fully honest with me but she’s entitled to keep certain parts of her life private.
I, on the other hand, intentionally deceived her for what? Over two months? And why? I could have come right out and told her. I could have told her what I found out and she would have either let me stay with her or she wouldn’t have but my selfish ass didn’t want to risk missing out on getting to know her.
When I reach the end of the GPS navigation and Riley’s car is nowhere in sight, I start to panic. I pull up to the side of the road and look at the pin on the map that shows the location Riley shared with me. When I think I’ve figured out where I need to go, I put the truck in drive and turn onto an unmarked road that leads between rows of warehouses.
I spot Riley’s car off one of the side streets and make a last minute hairpin turn as I accelerate towards her. There isn’t a single street lamp so I stop the truck in the middle of the lane at an angle that illuminates the front half of her car with my headlights.
I jump out and walk to her driver’s side door. My body cast a shadow across the window, blocking my view of the inside of the car. I’m sure the light has alerted her to my presence but since she’s made no move to come out, I knock gently on the glass.
The lock on the door clicks and I backup to allow Riley to open the door.
“What the fuck happened?” I growl as soon as her body comes into view. I stand rooted in place, taking in her appearance. The only thing she has on is see through lingerie. She’s not even wearing any fucking shoes. Her makeup is smudged and running down her cheeks but on the right side, below the black mascara, is a patch of dark purple skin that can only be a bruise.
I’m fucking seething. Now I know why she sounded so terrified on the phone and someone is about to lose their fucking head.
I’m pulled out of the rabbit hole of dark thoughts when Riley whimpers and scoots backwards, obviously spooked by my outburst.
“Fuck, Ri, it’s okay don’t be scared, please.” I relax my hands at my side, unclenching my fists.
Her bottom lip is quivering when she looks up at me with tear filled eyes. “Please, Sy, I just want to go home.” She pulls her legs up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them and it breaks my fucking heart.
“Of course, don’t move.” I race back to my truck and shift through the items in my backseat until I reach my gym bag. I find a clean sweatshirt but the rest of my gear is in the dirty laundry back at my and Riley’s apartment. The hoodie will have to do until I get her home.
“Okay, sweetheart, I have something that ya can put on.” I hope that my words are enough of a warning that I’m going to approach her.
I squat in front of her and hold the bottom of the hoodie for her to slip her arms through. She sniffs a few times before reaching forward. The hoodie is not such a bad fit after all. Once it’s pulled down her slight frame, it’s so long that it comes down nearly to her knees.
“Take everything ya need and let's get ya in the truck. I’ll put the heat on while I look under the hood.” Her body is covered in goosebumps and she’s shivering badly although, at this point, I’m not sure if it’s because of the cool night breeze or if she’s in a state of shock. Probably both.
She nods almost imperceptibly and I extend my hand for her to take. She moves to put her feet on the ground but I stop her when I remember she’s barefoot.
“I’m gonna carry ya, I don’t want ya to get cut on anything.”
She lets me guide her arms around my neck and holds on as she’s lifted out of the car. Once I have her safely tucked away, I make quick work of inspecting her car’s motor. I find the problem quickly. The problem is that the car should be sold for parts and never be driven on public roads again. I don’t even know how it lasted this long.
I call the tow company we use at work and leave a message. They won’t open until morning but the car getting stolen between now and then would not be a big loss. I shut the hood, wipe my hands on my jeans and get back in the cab next to Riley.
“Ri?” She doesn’t look at me. Her small hum is the only sign that she has even heard me call her name.
“I think I should take ya to a hospital or something.”
That catches her attention. “No! No you can’t do that!” All of the sudden her fingers are wrapped around the door handle and I have to reach out and grab her to keep her from falling out when her weight pushes it open.
“Hey, it’s alright, sweetheart. No hospital.”
Her body is deadly still. She stares down at the hand I laid on her thigh, just above her knee, and I expect her to bat it away but it seems to have a calming effect on her. She takes a few deep breaths, slowing her frantic breathing then pulls the door fully shut and releases the handle.
“No hospital,” she repeats, still fixated on my hand. “And no police.”
Fuck. Whatever happened must have been bad. I agree, straightening in my seat and starting the truck. I keep my hand on her thigh the whole drive back to our apartment. Once we get there, I contemplate the best way to get her up the stairs.
“Ri? Can I carry ya in?”
“Please.” The one word plea splits my heart right down the middle.
I get her to wrap her legs around my waist so that one of my hands is free to unlock the door and she hugs me tightly, pressing her face into my neck. I stop in the kitchen long enough to grab a towel and a bag of frozen peas then carry her the rest of the distance to her bedroom.
I lay her gently on the bed, immediately covering her up with a blanket. When the bedside lamp gets switched on, I press the makeshift ice pack to Riley’s swollen cheek.
“Can ya hold this for me? That’s good, hold it just like that.”
Her eyes follow me as I move around the room. I open a few drawers before I find a pair of shorts and a shirt I’ve seen her wear to bed before. If she’s bothered by my invasion of her privacy, she doesn’t say it. After finding a pack of makeup remover wipes in the bathroom, I hand her the clothes and turn around while she changes. There’s a faint swishing sound from the left side of the room followed by the rustling of her bed sheets. Looking over, I realize that Riley has thrown the underwear she was wearing into the trash.
“You can look now.”
When I turn back, she’s wearing the clothes I gave her but she’s also put my hoodie back on over top. I kneel by the bed and proceed to gently clean the ruined makeup from her face.
“What can I do?” I ask when I finish my task, guiding the ice back to her face. The red and purple bruise over her cheekbone is fully visible, part of it extending almost to her eyebrow.
I’m prepared to do absolutely anything she needs but I’m still taken aback by her answer.
“Stay with me. I don’t want to sleep alone.”
I honestly don't think that's such a good idea but I'm not about to tell her that. If she thinks this is what she needs then that's what I will do.
“Lemme change and I’ll be right back.”
I go across the hall to find a pair of shorts. While I’m there, I fire off a text to Jared asking him to take care of Aika followed by another to Don saying I’m taking the day off tomorrow.
When I return to Riley’s room, she’s moved to the far side of the bed, leaving a space for me to join her. I hate that the first time I saw Riley’s body was on a stage, surrounded by two dozen men. I hate that the first time I got to hold Riley was to lift her out of her car on the side of a sketchy road. I hate that the first time I’m going to share a bed with her is because she’s afraid of whatever it is that happened tonight.
“Ya still want me to join?”
“Please.”
I slip between the sheets laying flat on my back as close to the edge as I can. To my surprise, Riley moves closer to me and lifts my arm, placing it around her shoulder. I follow her lead and pull her into my chest, wrapping both arms protectively around Riley’s frame. Her small hands wrap themselves around the fabric of my shirt like she’s trying to keep me from leaving. I don’t even think I could pull myself away from her if I tried.
“Ri, I know I look like some big ol’ redneck, but ya can tell me anything. When you’re ready to talk, I’ll be here to listen.”
She peeks up at me, small tear drops clinging to her eyelashes. “I don’t know if I can.”
I brush a strand of hair away from her face and the action causes her eyes to flutter closed as she rests her forehead against my chest. I repeat the motion, smoothing out her messy blond hair and gently coaxing out the knots.
“That’s okay,” I whisper. “I’ll be right here if ya change your mind.”
I can tell the exact moment Riley drifts off to sleep. Her entire body goes slack, the grip she has on my shirt loosening and the tension in her shoulders disappearing. I wait another few minutes, making sure she’s really out, then I press a kiss to the top of her head before switching off the lamp and plunging the room into darkness.

Recognizing the brokenness of a city, together
Tumblr media
Freeway construction in Midtown Atlanta in the 1980s. Shared on Linked In by Tim Wright (who posts a lot of good stuff).
This was an insane thing to do with our urban land. Look at all the acres that could be housing the kind of economic, social, climate benefits that cities are uniquely poised to provide; instead, they're owned and controlled by the state, for car flow.
People will argue that getting vehicles into the city is an economic benefit. Sure, it is. But I believe we hit a point of diminishing returns long ago when it comes to the amount of lost space, and the number of car trips, and the amount of pollution that has followed.
Maybe far in the future we can bring this land back into the city fabric of Atlanta. For now, let's work hard to reduce car trips, by way of producing great urbanism on the land that we can control.
I don't post sad photos like these for the purpose of bringing people down, BTW, or to cause friction with suburbanite car commuters.
I do it because, as corny as it sounds, I genuinely believe we need to all agree on what's broken about our urbanism before we can successfully fix it. We need to experience a kind of communal catharsis that recognizes the brokenness. After than, we can all support a vision for repair.

You've known Daryl since you met at the Atlanta camp, but you made your relationship official when things seemed to be settling down at the Prison. You never denied that you found Daryl attractive, nor was it a feeling that appeared overnight, but with everything you were going through and everything you were going through, having a boyfriend was the last thing on your list of needs.
Now you have arrived in Alexandria, after having to leave prison and be separated again, you find a community. A big shelter, where you can start from scratch, with new people, everyone started to adapt, but it took Daryl a few days more, with your help it was easier for him, that and Aaron offered him to repair a motorcycle that was still in pieces, and if he managed to fix it, it would be his.
That motivated Daryl a lot, that and being able to leave whenever he wanted.
The first ride was with you. Excitedly he went to look for you on his new bike offering you to get out of there. Of course you didn't hesitate, Alexandria was fine, but escaping from within its walls from time to time was also a relief.
It has become a routine. When Daryl doesn't have to go out with Aaron to explore, looking for people, you wake up early and head out on the bike, either for a quick ride or to hunt something. You always leave the bike some distance away so that the Walkers don't follow you and you go into the woods or get lost in the streets of an abandoned town. Daryl always takes care of the larger prey while you place small traps for rabbits or birds, even if a Walker falls, better, less problems for the community.
That morning you find a new town. Daryl parks his bike and the two of you split up in search of supplies, the houses are stripped, but sometimes the garbage of some is a treasure for others. You find several clothing stores, you collect in your backpack several clothes that are not torn and some clothes for Judith, you continue walking down the same street and you stop at the entrance of one of the houses, the garage door is closed and that makes you nervous, what would happen if there was a pack of dead people in there and they cornered you? You don't hear anything, but you still approach to investigate.
When you lift the shutter trying to make as much noise as possible to make sure everything is clear, there is nothing there, at least not dead. A workbench, with a bunch of tools, car and motorcycle parts, body paint guns, it's obvious that it was someone's work shop. You bite your lip and your eyes roam all over the place.
"Hey, did you find anything?" You hear Daryl call out behind you and you snap out of your reverie. "Wow, she's beautiful." He says as he sees the bike you kept looking at.
It's beautiful, a deep black color, it's not finished assembling, the parts aren't finished painting, but for the apocalypse there's plenty of material to spare. Daryl looks sideways at you and taps you gently on the shoulder.
"Ya wanna try it out? We could take it to Alexandria." He prompts you, but you feel yourself gasping for breath and shake your head.
"N-no, besides we don't know if it works..."
"We just need to get it running, plus the rest of the parts are here, I could put it back together in a moment." He offers you and walks over to the bike to get it out of where it is.
"No, Daryl, no need, besides we're going with your bike, we don't need another one. The rest could attract Walkers." You insist and he frowns.
"Don't y'know how to ride?" he jokes and you stammer, "Don't worry, we can put some small wheels on it and I'll teach ya how to use it." He laughs at your joke, but you're not amused.
"Screw you, Dixon." You growl "If you like it so much, keep the stupid bike."
You push it with all your might causing it to fall against the racks it was attached to and walk away. Daryl is in shock, but reacts by coming after you, shouting your name for you to wait for him. The problem with riding there together on his bike is that you can't run away from him, but that doesn't mean you're going to talk to him either.
The trip is tense and uncomfortable, Daryl wants to apologize to you, in fact he has done it several times, but you still don't open your mouth. When you reach Alexandria you get off the bike and leave without even looking at him.
"What did I do wrong?" He asks Carol and she sighs.
"Nothing, Daryl, but remember we all have a past, maybe a painful memory...give her time."
Daryl nods, but remains uneasy, nevertheless at night you go back to your bed and hug Daryl, he hugs you back stroking your hair, rocking you in his arms asking for forgiveness again.
You thought everything had been resolved. Several days pass after your dispute and things are fine, you are now nervous about other things, you need to talk to him. You smile when you hear the sound of Daryl's motorcycle engine, you go out to meet him and your smile falters when you see the bike he is on. He smiles at the sight of you and walks towards you.
"G'morning." He greets you.
"What are you doing, Daryl?" You ask feeling the anger come back to you. "Why did you bring...?"
"Because I want us to be able to ride together, each with a bike, it might be fun."
"Daryl, I told you I didn't want to..."
"If y'ain't know how to drive, it doesn't matter, I can teach you."
"Daryl, stop it!" You yell at him and he looks at you with wide eyes. "No, I don't know how to drive, b-but that's not the point, I..."
"What's the matter? You've been strange for days, n... you've never yelled at me like that before..." He mumbles lowering his head. "If it's about the bike, okay, I'll leave it in the garage, sorry if I've been too..."
"The bike isn't the problem, it's just... I'm just scared..." You sigh running life through your hair nervously.
"Afraid why? You've always come with me..."
"I know, but it's different, I... I don't want to hurt it..." You say at last and rest your hands on your belly.
"I wasn't sure..." You explain. "Me period has never been very regular, so I wasn't worried, but..." You stammer.
"Wanna no...?" his question dies as he follows the movement of your hands. "Y... You're..."
"Pregnant." He gasps and pulls your hair back and then rub your chin. "Fuck..." He snaps and you feel your eyes fill with tears, your fear becoming real.
"Daryl, listen to me..."
It was what you feared the most, his reaction, you know Daryl is skeptical on the whole parenting thing, even though he likes taking care of Judith, he's always seemed to be afraid in being a father, in reliving his own childhood and you've always been careful, but as they always say; it always sprinkles before it starts to rain.
"Why didn't tell me?" He ask you.
"I'm gonna be a father." He gasps and walks over to you, holds your face and kisses you intensely.
You gasp against his mouth and your tears roll down your cheeks as you hug him tightly, your heart pounding.
"How did I not notice?" He says caressing your bulging belly.
"We've all put on weight in this time we've been in Alexandria." You joke and he laughs. "I talked to Denise and she gave me a test, but I don't know anything else yet... Jesus says that at Hilltop they have an obstetrician, I'd like him to give me more information..."
"Yeah, yeah, sure, we'll go to Hilltop, but... y'ain't gotta be afraid of it." He says pointing to the bike. "I can teach ya, I won't let anythin' happen to ya."
"I know that..."
"Wouldn't ya like the three of us to go together with the bikes? With our baby..." You can see his eyes sparkle and your heart melts.
"Sounds great, Daryl..." You admit nodding your head in agreement.
"I'll teach ya, it'll be fun, let's give it a try." He says taking you by the hand and you can't help but laugh at his excitement. "Wait, does anyone else know?"
"Only Denise, because of the test she gave me, no one else..."
Daryl nods and rushes into the house, tugging on your hand, you follow him confused, walking hurriedly. In the living room is your group, talking amongst each other, calm and relaxed. Daryl enters the room raising his arms, pulling your arm up out of inertia.
"I'm gonna be a father!" he howls and everyone turns to look at you.
Your cheeks redden violently as everyone turns to you with applause and words of congratulations hugging you. Daryl is overjoyed and proud, you really never expected his response to be so intense. You are thrilled.
A few days later, you are back on the bike. Daryl rides behind you, helping you steer, his hands on the handlebars to keep the bike balanced, you ride it and he tells you when to shift gears with your feet. At first you were reluctant to ride, but Daryl doesn't give up, his hand always resting on your belly and mumbling a little 'sorry' when you brake sharply. At first you thought he was saying it to you, but he was definitely talking to your baby. Which managed to make your heart melt.
"Yer doin' good." He says against your ear. "Yer doin' better and better on yer own."
"Thank you." You smile as you stop in front of Hilltop's huge gate.
Daryl smiles kissing your cheek, lets go of the handlebars and when the gate opens, he rests them on your waist leaving you alone to steer the bike into the community. You have a doctor's appointment and you're both nervous.
Although you have to admit that the driving lessons have paid off.

The End.

I hope you liked it!!
See you in the next stories!!

Changes.
@bitofashortfuse
Change of scenery. It was required when you experience a traumatic event. For Nic she was the made hero of her own. She wasn’t the surgeon on the scenes. She wasn’t the person that opened up a patient or took the tools to repair the damages. She was the nurse that gave orders; she also had the bedside manner that was nearly perfect. She was the girl who would sit by a stranger; hold their hands when no one was there. She was the nurse that would bend backwards in order to advocate for you. She had a huge heart; and through the years she held one important relationship with Conrad Hawkins.
He was her fighter; the guy that knew how to push buttons, to challenge her. He had broken her heart once; but down the line she saw the good in him. The change he had; he no longer held the temper, he only wanted to fight for his patients, do right by them. And for a while we had a perfect relationship reigniting the flame, even said I do, but no relationship is perfect especially when death comes knocking on your door. Conrad died a hero. He had his last breath jumping in front of a car for a child. Nic held his head the whole time, she watched his eyes flutter closed for the last time. She watched the shallow raising and falling of his chest. She had the tears stray down her cheeks. That day stayed with her; and as much as the blonde loved Atlanta, she felt the numbness each time she walked through hallow halls, The stares from the people that knew her love for her late husband. It had become hard for Nic to want to work, despite how much she loved her job. So that’s why she decided to uproot her life; and come to Med in chicago, It was a place she had lived when she was young, so there was a sense of home for her.
She found a cheap shoebox apartment a block from the hospital; it was an easy route, and despite all the nerves coursing through her body; she felt like this was the right move. To move forward; nothing tethering her to fear; to the past life with her husband. The blonde was on her first shift at med; Maggie was giving her the run down; how each page worked; the smaller patient rooms. The right proacals. Listening intently the blonde bobbed her head along when they got a call from a girl named Brett informing us an ambulance was on route, a cop undercover was injuried, that’s when I caught sight of Will; Halstead the memories of growing up next door to the halstead boys became obvious. An instant smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
“ Stayed a chicago guy after all?” Beaming gaze emitted onto my features as he saw me, “ NIC” A brief extension of an embrace right as the doors swung open, A blonde women I can assume was Brett stepped out; “ Will it’s Jay. you might want to come to keep him calm, he’s insisting that he’s fine.” A knowing glance shared. Lips paused dropping my smile. Jay Halstead? A cop? Injured? I had a jar reaction it had been years since we spoke, since I had uttered a word to him. College, our futures never allied together. But here in Chicago; same place same time. Being a nurse; I had used my quick feet letting shoes shuffle after Will as the ambulance bay doors opened; you heard the annoyance from Jay almost instantly.
Snapping gloves over palms, the female had stepped out onto the pavement, Will had stepped forward as the gurney was taken out of the back and there was Jay laid back against the mat. Instantly I felt those nerves, would he be okay to see me? Did he resent me for never calling? We had once been thick as thieves, and suddenly our futures pulled us apart. I had to admit I loved him; and now I felt those jarring feelings instantly.
“ What kind of operation did you get messed up man? “ Will attempted to joke as he nodded to me as I stood at the sliding doors; almost unsure if I should move closer. “ Look who I found? “ Obvious speaking of me, I had stood awkwardly as the doctors started to move Jay inside the hospital. Eyes met his briefly. “ Jay.” The name that felt familiar; yet we stood as strangers.
