🔴 n e w • e p i s o d e 🔴 This episode is an older, short Patreon episode. I’ve been writing the new (upcoming) episode for almost a week. It is taking longer than expected BUT I didn’t want to leave you awesome listeners hanging this week! Morgan Leppert [15] and Toby Lowry [22] were banned from seeing each other ever again in 2008 by Morgan’s mom. To defy her rule, they came up with a plan. In the process, this meant (in their twisted minds) they had to murder an older, disabled man, James Thomas Stewart [66]. Is #VillianFriday a thing? It should be, because here is WAYNE T. CARR @waynetcarr, premiering in Episode Two as the dangerous pirate ZEBULON SHEARS. Wayne is a powerful stage actor, having played such heavyweight, titular roles as Othello and Macbeth. But he also stars in the romantic comedy series @StupidCupids. New: Enhanced Podcast Discovery, Snappy Search, and more
Hot on the heels of January’s update (which added added local search), this year’s second big Castro update is now available in the App Store. In this release we revamped the Discover tab, dramatically improved podcast search, and re-thought the way we talk about features in the app.
Revamped Podcast Discovery
We designed the new Discover tab to offer a quick, simple way for us to highlight a handful of interesting podcasts each week. The new, Instagram-like feed makes it easy to quickly scan for interesting collections. These collections are curated by us, and we will introduce new collections weekly. It’s designed to be a relaxed way to find interesting shows and know what’s new, not a deep dive into a directory of every podcast anyone might ever want.
The tab still includes the per-country category lists, but we’ve reworked them to fit into the feed. We’ve selected a single great show to represent each podcast category.
Snappy Search
This update also brings a redesigned search that instantly returns results as you type. This took a lot of work on the server side, but the bottom line is that search in Castro is now much faster, and far more accurate.
It’s also much easier to subscribe straight from a search result, just by tapping the + next to the search result.
Easier to Learn
When we originally designed Castro we borrowed terminology from email, to-do, and other productivity apps to describe the “triage” flow of managing episodes in the app. This language worked well for users comfortable with those apps, but it made Castro a little harder to learn for everyone else. Even when clearly understood, terms like “Archive” and “Inbox” started to feel out of place in a podcast player, since podcasts are supposed to be fun, not getting to Inbox Zero™
Castro now uses more familiar language to help navigate the app:
The “Inbox” tab is now simply “New”
The “Archive” tab has been renamed ‘Library”
“Archiving” is now “Clearing”
These changes don’t impact functionality — Castro users can still triage episodes of their favourite shows as before — but we hope these tweaks will make the app’s workflow a little easier to pick up and master.
From the start, we’ve designed Castro to be a powerful upgrade over the playback and management experiences offered by other podcast apps. Today’s updates are designed to help make the power of Castro accessible to more people: The new Discover tab makes it easy to learn about new shows, better search finds the shows listeners already know, and by cutting down on jargon it’s easier than ever to move to Castro.

Apple Removes Podcast Apps in China – VOA News
Tumblr media
A popular podcasting platform, Pocket Casts, has been removed from Apple’s app store in China at Beijing’s request, according to the company’s Twitter thread.
Pocket Casts confirmed Wednesday on Twitter that the request was made by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), Beijing’s top internet watchdog agency that controls which apps can be accessed on iOS and other platforms in the country. “We were contacted by the CAC through Apple around 2 days before the app was removed from the store,” it said.
Pocket Casts has been removed from the Chinese App store by Apple, at the request of the Cyberspace Administration of China. We believe podcasting is and should remain an open medium, free of government censorship. As such we won’t be censoring podcast content at their request.
— Pocket Casts (@pocketcasts) June 11, 2020
Before Pocket Casts was removed, another podcast player for iPhone, Castro, said on June 4 that its app was also removed from the Chinese app store by Apple. Castro said about 10% of its user base is in China. Asked why its app was taken down, Castro said in a Twitter comment on June 6 that they think it might have been the company’s support of the protests in Hong Kong, but “we were not given specifics.”
We think it might have been our support of the protests in the Discover tab. We were not given specifics.
— Castro Podcasts (@CastroPodcasts) June 7, 2020
Pocket Casts, originally developed by an Austrian company, was acquired by a group of American public radio companies in 2018. It is currently ranked 82nd most popular in the podcast news app section on Apple’s U.S website, where the Twitter app is number one. The app was not searchable within Apple’s Chinese app store at the time of writing.
Apple could not be immediately reached for comment.
This is not the first time that Apple has removed an app from the app store following a request by the Chinese government. According to a Transparency Report released on Apple’s website, for the first six months of 2019, the company received 56 requests from the Chinese government seeking removal of a third-party application offered on the app store related to alleged or suspected legal violations. In comparison, it received only two requests from Vietnam and five from Russia. Apple, by its own account, took down 194 apps in mainland China, none in Vietnam and 16 in Russia.
The podcast removal comes amid fresh criticism from U.S.-based Chinese activists who said that Zoom, a U.S. video communication company, censors video talks on Hong Kong protests and China’s Tiananmen Square crackdown.
The video-chat app briefly blocked an account of a Chinese human rights leader and then later restored the account on Wednesday. According to The New York Times, Zoom said in a statement on Wednesday that it had been following local laws when it suspended the account. “It is not in Zoom’s power to change the laws of governments opposed to free speech,” Zoom said.

Pocket Casts and Castro Podcasts removed from Apple’s China store – TechCrunch
Tumblr media
Before June each year, content and media platforms in China anxiously anticipate a new round of censorship as the government tightens access to information in the lead-up to the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
This year, Chinese users lost access to two podcast apps — Pocket Casts and Castro Podcasts. Neither app is searchable within Apple’s Chinese App Store at the time of writing.
Pocket Casts, which was acquired by a group of American public radio companies in 2018, tweeted that it “has been removed from the Chinese App Store by Apple, at the request of the Cyberspace Administration of China,” the country’s internet watchdog.
When Pocket Casts asked for clarification, Apple’s app review team told the podcast firm to contact the CAC directly, an email seen by TechCrunch showed.
“We will most likely contact them to find out more, though we weren’t given that option to stop the app from being removed, only as a potential solution to have it re-instated. The very small amount of warning we were given between there being a problem, and our app being completely removed from the Chinese app store was quite alarming,” a spokesperson for Pocket Casts told TechCrunch.
“We assumed that what they’d want us to remove are specific podcasts, and possible some of the Black Lives Matter content we’d posted.”
Castro Podcasts, bought by Dribbble owner Tiny in 2018, said in a tweet that while it wasn’t given specifics about its removal in China, the incident might have been caused by its “support of the protests.”
We think it might have been our support of the protests in the Discover tab. We were not given specifics.
— Castro Podcasts (@CastroPodcasts) June 7, 2020
Apple cannot be immediately reached for comment.
The losses are reminiscent of Apple’s crackdown on Chinese-language podcasts last year around this time. For many independent podcast creators in China, that was the beginning of the end to free expression. While domestic podcast platforms play by Beijing’s rules to self-censor, cracks have long remained on international platforms such as Apple Podcast.
The Apple app, which functions as RSS feeds rather than a hosting service, has unnerved the authority for its relatively hands-off approach towards audio content. That’s a contrast to its Chinese counterparts, which screen content thoroughly before publishing. While Apple only distributes content, its Chinese rivals “combine content hosting, content distribution, and user listening as a result of China’s regulations and years of commercial development,” observed (in Chinese) Chinese podcasting firm JustPod in a blog post.
Most foreign podcasts had long been inaccessible on Apple within China. When the giant began weeding out Chinese shows that lacked government-approved hosting partners that moderated content, many saw it as Apple’s nod to censorship masked as a law-abiding move.
The company’s shareholders have protested, with 40% of the group (paywalled) casting support for a proposal that would require Apple to be more transparent on how it responds to government demands for censorship.
Pocket Casts and Castro Podcasts are two censorship-free alternatives that many Chinese podcast creators had picked since last year’s purge within Apple Podcast. Pocket Casts said China is now its 7th largest market with rapid growth. These options are now gone.
Recent events suggest that Apple may be increasingly caving to Beijing’s pressure to stay in the market. In February, the firm removed the smash-hit Plague Inc., which was told it included “content that is illegal in China as determined by the CAC,” the same government agency that dropped Pocket Casts. In 2017, Apple stirred up a huge controversy when it pulled hundreds of VPNs that would help mainland users access otherwise blocked websites.
