In 1987, the Kien family stood on a red dirt road in a refugee camp called Site 2 somewhere along the border of Cambodia and Thailand. With their loved ones scattered, their home displaced, and their country suffused in violence, they place their hopes on a vague future. Absurd events become strangely, sadly common. Fate, or luck, or kindness brings them safe passage across the sea to Boston, MA; Montréal, QC; and finally, Bradenton, FL, a few minutes away from where this wall stands.

The youngest of the four depicted is our friend Anhdi. Today, he lives in Bradenton with his wife and three kids, who we invited to help paint and add to their family’s story directly. It’s a story with many secret turns and memories that shape their specific experience, but it’s also one that’s universal to so many who have had to flee their homes amidst conflict in the search of a new beginning. It’s a story of survival and the human spirit, and we feel so lucky to have been able to try and express it.

We’re in Florida now! We drove from Charleston on New Year’s Day to stay at one of the two condos we have here as investment properties/short term rentals. 

You may remember that I’m usually horrified any time we stop by, because we have a property management company, but god bless them, they’re just not as eagle-eyed as I want them to be. I always find random marks on the wall that I would’ve cleaned off, or a lightbulb is out, or a lampshade is randomly smashed on one side in a way that’s completely baffling. But this time, everything was GOOD! The beachy tchotchkes weren’t exactly spread out around the place like I’d like them, but hey, at least they weren’t stolen. (Nothing to test your faith in humanity like renting out your home.)

We blocked off a week for ourselves at first, but it turns out the building is painting everyone’s balconies, and all of them have to be closed off for at least the next month. We wouldn’t really want to rent to anyone when they’re not allowed out on the balcony, so it looks like we’re here for a while! It’s driving me mad that I can’t go out and soak up the sun a few times a day while I try to avoid work, so instead I just stand with my face pressed up against the glass and stare at the guys painting the balconies as they go by on their ropes. 

We’ve been going for a walk every day at sunset, and it’s been in the high 60s or low 70s, so I’ll sometimes just wear my swimsuit and get LOOKS from all of the old people in their jackets and hats. That’s summertime weather, baby! 🌞

I immediately love your idea about reef safe sunscreen -- that Sam insists that Dean needs to wear sunscreen -- Dean makes some crack about not needing to keep his skin babysoft, unlike some people -- Sam saying hey, I'm not the one who sunburns like a lobster and then basically turns into the Walking Freckle, but you do you -- Dean grumpily deigning to buy some -- Sam immediately like, wait, that one's bad for coral -- Dean like WHEN DO I EVER GET TO GO TO THE BEACH, I'M WEARING THE STUPID CREAM, SHUT UP ALREADY -- followed by 50 miles of grumpy silence on the highway. Dean missed rubbing in a spot on his ear and it looks like someone jizzed on him; Sam, pettily, doesn't tell him until after he talks to the cute girl at the motel desk.

That aside, lol --

One thing I always thought would be super fun for them to do was spring training baseball, especially back in the day when it used to be a genuinely cheap day out. Whether in Arizona or Florida -- it's late Feb/early March and they're in like Iowa or something freezing their balls off, and Dean just wants some days in the sunshine with a cold beer and no worries. In recent years it's kind of turned into an expensive thing, especially with all the baseball equivalent of WAGs, lol, but like -- 1998, swinging down to Tucson, buying a ticket for ten bucks and a hot dog for one, lounging in the stands sucking up all the sun they can get? Yeah. And it's sweet, you know -- seeing some of the younger players, and sometimes some of the real stars, and there are no stakes really, and you just kick back and, yes, get sunburned. (Should've put on your sunscreen, Dean.) And hell, maybe they catch a case in Texas after that, and get that ghost taken care of, and then they're halfway to Florida, so... let's catch a game over there, huh, Sammy? And Sam pretends it's mostly for Dean, but he likes it too. They take opposite sides in NL vs AL, just to have another thing to bicker about. <3
