A tropical entropy always seems to prevail here, defeating grand schemes even as they are realized. It makes Porsche think of his demented, seductive dreams, how they're always suffused with a vortical tension. “What are you waiting for?” he asks, seeming still trapped in the spin. Kinn’s hot black eyes linger on the lights. “For the storm to pass.” A hard crack of thunder fizzles the sky and a wiry bolt of white spreads upward in a star-like formation. Porsche feels it in his bones and tries to stop his shiver. He never did like storms. “You’ll be waiting a long time,” he says without thinking. He doesn’t notice Kinn’s eyes on him until he looks back. “I know,” he says.

Der Wat Pho ist Thailands ältester und größter Tempel – ihm einen Besuch abzustatten gehört zum Pflichtprogramm der ersten Besichtigungstage. Den Begriff „Wat“ mit „Kloster“ zu übersetzen greift zu kurz, und ist auch falsch. In jeder thailändischen Stadt fungiert ein Wat als Zentrum buddhistischen Lebens. In Bangkok stehen ganze 400 Stück herum. Finanzieren tun es alle. Arme, reiche, bedürftige, begüterte – vereint der Wat doch Grundschule, Spital, Gemeinschaftsräume, Altenheim, Versammlungszentrum und Unterkunft für Mönche und Adepten. Oft gibt es auch medizinische Anwendungen, wie Massage oder soziale, wie die Behandlung von Drogensüchtigen oder gar Sterbebegleitung. Der von einer Mauer umgebene Tempelbezirk beherbergt verschiedene Gebäude. Mittelpunkt der Anlage ist meist ein mächtiger Baum. Buddha selbst soll unter einem Bodhi-Baum meditiert haben.

Wat Pho

Ergebnis ist die von ihm entwickelte und gepredigte Lehre. Buddhismus ist keine Religion, es ist Philosophie. Zentrales Element ist die Meditation, aus der Wissen und Erfahrung weitergegeben wird. Die Lehre begründet sich aus umfassenden philosophischen Gedanken und Geboten bezüglich Lebensführung. Kein Gott steht dafür zur Verfügung, vielmehr ein Lehrer. Der Wat Pho ist wohl einer der prächtigsten Tempel seiner Art. Gegenüber dem benachbarten „Großen Palast“ herrscht im Gebäudekomplex eine gelöste, ja heitere Stimmung. Mit der Bekleidungsvorschrift nimmt man es nicht so genau wie nebenan, außer, dass man beim Eintritt ins Innere der Tempel die Schuhe ablegen muss. Man soll sich dem großen Denker eher nur bloßhappert nähern, ihm jedoch keineswegs die Fußsohlen zuwenden – die nämlich gelten als unrein, was sie meistens auch sind. Rund um das Allerheiligste herrscht viel Verkehr. In der Anlage leben heute rund 300 Mönche – eine hoch angesehene Kaste. Viele männliche Halbwüchsige treten nur für eine Weile in die Ordensgemeinschaft ein, bringt dies doch ihren Familien, insbesondere den Müttern Glück und Segen. Ihre Aufgaben sind meist untergeordnet. Die Profis unter den Safrangelben sind für Höheres zuständig. Der tägliche Segen, die buddhistischen Riten und nicht selten die Funktion des angesehenen Schullehrers.

Wat Pho

Genau gegenüber des Wat Pho, jenseits des träge dahinfließenden, die Stadt in zwei Hälften teilenden, Chao Praya, befindet sich der nicht minder prächtige Wat Arun. Namenspatronin ist eine Inderin: Aruna, die Göttin der Morgenröte. Ein Missverständnis, zeigt der 67 Meter hohe Prang (Turm) doch erst bei Sonnenuntergang seine volle Pracht. Die aus Porzellanscherben bestehende Mosaikverkleidung funkelt den Gläubigen so pittoresk entgegen, dass diese bestärkt, die Ungläubigen aber dadurch erst recht erleuchtet werden. Der Wat Arun aber hat noch eine andere Funktion zu erfüllen – und die ist profaner Natur. Sein Konterfei zu besitzen hat eine höchst beruhigende Wirkung auf das gemeine Volk. Ziert es doch die hiesige 10-Baht-Münze.

Unterwegs in Bangkok

Bewegt man sich durch Bangkoks Straßen, ist man gut beraten, sich eines der unzähligen Tuk Tuks zu bedienen, besonders wenn man morgens, mittags oder abends unterwegs ist – vor allem aber dazwischen. Bangkoks Verkehrsadern sind immer verstopft. Keine einzige Tageszeit, die keinen Verkehrsinfarkt aufweist. Die kleinen, wendigen, neonbeleuchteten Dreiräder bewegen sich kreuz und quer mit und gegen die Spur der Limousinen, SUVs oder Busse. Mit dem Leben sollte man aber sicherheitshalber Schluss gemacht haben, steht man doch alle irdischen Ängste aus. Aber: Ans Ziel ist noch jeder gekommen – fragt sich nur wie. Spaß beiseite, Tuk Tuks sind nun man die schnellsten Gefährte durch die Verkehrsschneisen des Mollochs. Natürlich gibt es Hochbahn und U-Bahn – beides probiert, perfekt organisiert – aber Spaß machen die Pistenflöhe allemal am meisten. Am besten man überlässt sich in Bangkok der Quadratur des Kreises, denn der Rushhour-Gigant hält prächtige Oasen bereit: Parks und Grünflächen, die in ihrer Pracht und Muße keinen Vergleich mit japanischen Zen-Gärten, mitteleuropäischen Palmenhäusern oder gar der sensationellen, Singapore vorgelagerten Sentosa-Insel zu scheuen braucht. Ob Lumphini – Siam – Queens – oder Kings Royal Park, vom prachtvollen Dusit Park ganz zu schweigen. Ein Fitnesserlebnis höchst individueller Art sei hier nicht verschwiegen. Radeln in Bangkoks grüner Lunge Bang Kachao. Es handelt sich um eine künstliche Insel in einer Biegung des Chao Praya-Flusses. Die einfachste Art dorthin zu kommen ist per Boot. An drei Piers wird die Überfahrt angeboten, ich habe die in Klong Toei genommen. Per Metro, ein paar Stationen mit dem Bus, schon steht man vor einer netten Oma, die einem für 20 Baht (50 Cent) eine Longtail-Fahrt in Richtung anderes Ufer verkauft. Drüben angekommen mietet man für ebenso wenig Geld ein Rad und strampelt los. Gemüse- und Reisfelder, Obstplantagen und ein märchenhafter Park mit See, Birdwatch-Türmen nebst garantierter Waran-Begegnung in freier Wildbahn inklusive. Dazu noch der Besuch eines pittoresken Wochenendmarktes. Bangkok-Abenteuer pur jenseits touristischer Trampelpfade.

Sünde und Pfründe

Reist man nach Thailand der Sünde wegen, ist man gut bedient. Wahrscheinlich nirgends auf der Welt bekommt man für kleines Geld mehr geboten als hier. Besonders in Bangkok. Hier lauert hinter jeder Massage das „Happy End“, hinter jeder Anmache, hinter jedem Cocktail – in einschlägigen Bezirken. Daher: Obacht, Fremder, wohin du dich bewegst. Vor allem aber: Hände weg von guten Tipps. Anquatsche pur. Die Girls sind zumeist Boys, das Bier ist warm und die Salons Gerümpel. Schauen erlaubt, vom Naschen wird abgeraten. Was Pattaya außerhalb der Metropole ist Patpong innerhalb der Stadtgrenze. Einst gehörten die zwei sündigen Gassen einem Chinesen. Ob man´s glaubt oder nicht. Die thailändische Reeperbahn war in Privatbesitz – und der Nabel des Rotlichtviertels. Go-Go-Bars, GIs-Schuppen und Hostessen-Etablissements.

Bang Kachao

Dazwischen Massage, Massage, Massage. Empfohlen wird der Besuch der feuchten Meile in den Vormittagsstunden. Fahle Gesichter ohne Puder und Flitter, Hanfschwaden und ruinöse Bierkneipen zeigen ihre wahre Fassade, und die ist triste wie Praterbuden im November. Kaum zu glauben, dass hier jede Nacht der Rubel rollt. Aber ein Blick hinter die schalen Kulissen von Glanz und Glamour lohnt allemal, wenn auch nur zur Abschreckung.

Jalan di bawah Saphan Phut seperti terasa lebih indah malam itu. Aku beberapa kali melewati jalan ini di siang akhir pekan. Tempat yang tidak spesial, sungai Chao Praya tidak segemerlap seperti yang terlihat di area Sathorn, atau Pinklao, hanya deretan bangunan lama yang tidak tertata di sisi Thonburi.

“Tham mai a? Nueay ro? (Kenapa? Lelah kah?)”

“Nid noy. (A little.)”

Tidak ada bangku disini, hanya ada semen yang melingkari pohon. Memang tempat ini tidak didesain untuk menikmati keindahan Chao Praya. Ia duduk disampingku, tidak banyak bertanya. Aku terpaku memandang ke seberang. Banyak pertanyaan di pikiran. Ada berapa orang di dalam bangunan oranye disana, sejak kapan ada masjid kecil disebelah klenteng itu, dan bagaimana aku tiba di momen ini?

Hari ini aku menemaninya ke kuil Bophitphimuk untuk sembahyang. Tidak ingin ke tempat yang biasanya, katanya. Aku memang tidak ikut sembahyang, tetapi mendengarkan doa doa Bikhu sangat menenangkan.

Tidak seperti biasanya, kali ini hari sudah gelap ketika ia membangunkanku yang tertidur dipojok belakang ruang utama kuil.

Satu kapal kecil membawa tongkang melintas menuju ke hulu. Suaranya sayup tertutup ramai kendaraan dari atas jembatan. Suasana sekitar cukup sepi. Hanya satu dua orang berjalan dipinggiran tembok sungai, dengan sesekali bus no. 3 melintas di belakang kami. Angin desember bertiup, membuatku sedikit kedinginan. Suasana yang membuatku teringat desember 2 tahun lalu.

Goofy ahh giant siphonophore (below is a copy and paste from my submission description for Calamity Mod’s art contest event regarding the Sea Kingdom)

Praia (Giant Siphonophore Praya Dubia), most popular transit system of the Sea Kingdom 

 The name Praia actually refers to the whole colony of polyps (any pros because yeah). Common word tell of the siphonophore being found too close above its' water depth, at the risk of death from bursting. Sea kingdom officials agreed to find a way to save the colony, so they brought jewelry to weigh it down and bind its hydrostatic skeleton, focusing on lining it with opal for the power of the water.

 A decision was made to have Praia be a form of transit system for the kingdom, turning the jewelry to protect itself from bursting as well as prevent passengers from being stung at all. Every so often, Praia receives a needed maintenance from the authorities to repair the armor jewelry and account for new parts of the colony. 

Individual polyps were given the names of various surface nations' alphabet and terms, such as Aleph "Ox" for the "head", and so on. Some polyps had hooks and stingers, the former to assist cargo and the latter for defense. The polyps could communicate with farers, offering an interactive and comfortable experience that supported the growing popularity in addition with the bioluminescence. 

 Death: during the assault on the Sea Kingdom, many inhabitants took Praia to escape. However, the dangers and chaos caused Praia to rise up too much and damaging the armor, causing the siphonophore to burst and leaving the passengers vulnerable. 

 Funny: EVERYONE KNOWS (mostly) where the inspiration came from. There's too little giant siphonophore OC material out there to have a reference other than Octonauts. I slept on this design the whole contest and only had a day to plug in my drawing tablet and get working. And I've gotten some specifics irl biology wrong in the design but yeah. Enjoy.

Day Twenty-Seven, Part Four: An Excursion to Ayutthaya

Outside Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit is a statue that worshippers can adorn with small pieces of gold leaf. Some people put the leaf wherever the statue is bare. Others put it near a place where they themselves are having a health problem.

Instead of riding back in the van, we traveled by boat along that Chao Praya river.

On ourway, we passed many other temples, with some golden Buddhas,

and others with Buddhas painted all in white.

We also passed the new parliament building.

As we were coming into Bangkok, I took the only selfie I allowed myself on this trip.

With the river running high from the rainy season, we barely cleared some of the bridges. For once, being rather short (5'8") was a rather good thing.

We docked at River Center, an intriguing art center in Bangkok. Here, there are easels people can rent in order to paint along the river,

and a soundproof music study where one can make recordings. Notice all the harps.
