I bought a cushion for my fireside chair with a mouse from Beatrix Potter's Tailor of Gloucester and it's the best financial investment I've made in a while, I smile every time I see it

#i found this book i don't remember where when i was 10ish and tried to read it. very audacious seeing as i knew like 50 words of english #i skimmed through it looking for words i recognised. mouse. snow. coat etc #then i encountered the phrase ''worsted chenille'' and it was the last straw #i knew what worst means. it means very bad. it's in past tense for some reason. and chenille is a caterpillar. in french for some reason #and this doesn't make the sentence any more intelligible! i thought it was about clothes? wasn't this guy making a coat #what role does the worst caterpillar play in this project #it was demoralising i felt like english & i would never work. you can know the words and they still don't make sense #the words worsted chenille have haunted me ever since

Mute Branch Au: Trolls who learned sign language.

Xxx

King Peppy: Obviously, the first one to know it due to helping Branch develop it. Can do full conversations.

Poppy: Was first taught by her dad; before the first movie, she only knew major phrases and a few words. As the movie progressed, she was able to learn more complicated sentences, earning her own name sign. In The Beat Goes On, she has a full understanding of the language and helps Branch create new words as he becomes more involved in the community.

Smidge: Being Poppy's helper, she already knew a few words. Now that Branch is in the village more often, she has more opportunities to practice. Branch also teaches her a few animal calls so she can help Milton with the critters.

Biggie: The gentle troll always felt guilty for not understanding Branch; when the opportunity to learn troll sign (pending name) appeared, he lept at the chance. Mr. Dinkles is his tutor (don't ask how he teaches. It's best not to know.)

Cooper: Oddly enough, the sweet goofball had no problem learning the language, even helped create morse code in case Branch couldn't be seen or had his hands full.

Guy Diamond: At first, Guy struggled with learning the language, but since Branch has an impressive collection of literary works, he found it good motivation if it meant having another troll that can keep up with him in the more complex writings.

Chenille and Satin: Like Guy, the two struggled with learning the language until Model Behavior. There were many fashion terms that Branch hadn't created signs for, so they helped create them. Now, they ask him to be an occasional model while respecting his preferences.

Dj Suki: Suki was the last one to learn due to her inconsistent sleeping schedule. It took a lot of practice until she could keep a conversation with him. Her niece Cj, though, had an easier time, so she helped her auntie with learning it.

But now I'm imagining Branch being approached by the twins again, now that he and Poppy are together. Satin and Chenille love him as a model for the clothes they make, and he's modeled for them before. So he thinks nothing of it when they ask him to pose for photos again for their new collection.

This time is preferable to the last, the style much less avante garde and much more wearable. They dress him up in cowboy garb and have him pose with his vest open. Then they smear soot on him and dress him like a firefighter. Then he's a pilot and they take pictures against the wind in the trees. At one point he's in a rocker outfit again, and they painstakingly apply make up tattoos on almost every spare inch of skin on his arms and torso. The pictures they take are methodical, and it's all done within a day.

They send him off praising him for being their model. Except they deflect when he asks what catalogue this is for. They say he'll thank them later.

A week later is Poppy's birthday, and Satin and Chenille win bragging rights for giving the Queen possibly the best personalized gift she'd ever recieved... a calandar - filled with a different saucily shot photo of her boyfriend for every month.

Everyone thinks this is the greatest and fricking the funniest thing ever, especially Poppy who hangs it on her wall immediately in front of everyone. And Branch can't even be mad because Poppy is screaming and shrieking and crying about how much she loves it, and she gives him lots of kisses.

He concedes that the twins deserve some thanks later.
