Something Is Killing The Children vol.6
This is going to be a pretty short review, because as usual when talking about a series I try not to give out any spoilers for previous volumes and here's quite impossible. This is a horror graphic novel series that I have talked about a lot. This new chapter of the series continues the storyline that was introduced in the fifth volume, and it was even better than the last one. The plot is quite tense, and it ends in a cliffhanger that leaves you needing more. I honestly don't know how I'll wait a whole year to read the next (or at least that's when I imagine the next volume will be released here). If you don't mind your horror to be graphic I very much recommend these graphic novels.

;; i had a thought and i don't know how better to explain it then via an incorrect quote so i present to you "mod haruka thinks sometimes"
Haruka, trying to flirt: If I was in a time loop I would desperately try to explain my situation to you every reset.
Minori: Oh! Same.?!
[Haruka ends up in a time loop.]
[Through some other things escapes it. Later..]
Minori: Wouldn't it be funny if we were in a time loop?
Haruka: No. I'd try to desperately explain my situation to you every reset and then you'd go ahead and die on me. So the one reset I chose not to, I get out of the loop and you live.
Minori: That's really specific. Are you ok?
Haruka: No! Every time I explained things you said and I quote, 'Wow are you flirting with me?' and then died!
Minori: ..That sounds like something I would do.
Haruka: BECAUSE YOU DID-

MILLIONS OF DEAD CHILDREN BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE MULTI-DEATH CORPORATION.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on back cover sleeve art/B-side to the "Chicken Squawk" 7 inch EP by American hardcore punk band MILLIONS OF DEAD CHILDREN (MDC), released in 1984 under R Radical Records.
7 INCH EP OVERVIEW: "It was 1984 and there was a gigantic famine going on in parts of Africa especially Ethiopia. M.D.C. attacked the problem head on. This was all due to greed by multi-death corporations and corrupt governments. If not for this greed this problem could easily be solved. Musically you would see M.D.C. continue to get faster and more thrash-like. Their lyrics would continue to tackle the cause of these problems and offer solutions. This record first came out in 1984 and went out of print shortly after."

Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?
Tumblr media
Sesame Street - The Sesame Street Book & Record (Columbia, 1970) - Photographer unknown, visuals by Brian Cranner
I've been a Sesame Street fanatic since I first walked this earth. I would kill to have this in my collection.
You know what's depressing? Of the original cast on this cover, only Loretta Long (Susan) is still with us.
This was the first (authorized) Sesame Street compilation album, containing songs from the show up to this point. Columbia put out several editions of this album: the edition with the book (pictured), and two book-less editions with different cover designs, simply called The Sesame Street Record. The version with the book is pretty easy to find, though be mindful on condition.

Ok, I love the April Fools' swap units a lot. We get to see dynamics that are either less focused on or haven't gotten any content at all, and it's cool to see characters who don't really have a reason to interact hanging out in a universe where things went a bit differently.
But Fanastasia Squad just doesn't do it for me. It feels forced and like they just took the bare bones of Tsukasa's story, put it in the Vivid Bad Squad setting, and threw Rui and Akito in just for the sake of it. (Toya still has a reason to be in the vbs equivalent. If we go off the fact Rad Weekend seemingly never happened here, Akito has no motivation, but Toya still wants to go against his dad.) Plus, it all just feels like a lazy attempt to justify the Ifuudoudou cover for April Fools.
Anyway this is essentially just a long winded way of saying that I have spent the last hour thinking of a way to split these guys up which makes sense, and now I'm sharing what I came up with.
(This does not affect the wxs and n25 equivalents because I love both of those groups to death, and I found I liked my ideas for alternative members for Aoharu/Friends and YUME YUME JUMP! more.)
Aoharu/Friends: Akito swaps with Airi
Ok, so originally, Saki invites Airi to join because she looked up to her while in the hospital. Saki does still invite her, but she has to decline due to her trying out street music with an old acquaintance's sister. Airi does, however, point Saki in the direction of a potential drummer. Ena gave up on art after dropping out of the art school led by her father's old friend when she hit a slump. Shortly before this, however, her younger brother Akito had dropped out of his school soccer team for feeling like he would never be able to put in the effort needed. To take his mind off of things, she dragged him to the summer festival and they watched the concert there.
Akito fell in love with music and convinced their mother to get him a bass guitar. When Ena dropped out of the art school, Akito attempted to play her a song to cheer her up like the festival cheered himself up. Ena could only smile from her brother's attempt, and she began to drum along on whatever she could find. When their mother saw, she got Ena a drum kit for her next birthday. (No, I didn't fix the Shinonome household. Their dad would just probably not care as much since it isn't art Ena is pursuing.) Saki searches out Ena from Airi's advice and finds the siblings having a makeshift performance in a park. She approaches with a request to join their band. Both are sceptical until Saki mentions Airi, then Ena is on board and drags Akito in.
Akito is still a perfectionist, and Ena still feels like she isn't doing enough at times, and the siblings still banter a lot, but overall, they get along much better, and Ichika and Saki find it entertaining. There is still the bit of Ena not wanting to disappoint her underclassmen. Akito is the one that mostly pushes them in practice.
YUME YUME JUMP!: Tsukasa swaps with Shiho
I was originally going to have it be An swapping with Tsukasa, but I decided against it. Tsukasa aims to be a world star. However, his most recent auditions have all been for bust. As he left Phoenix Wonderland with another rejection (because he probably wouldn't have gotten the job if it wasn't for Emu, I think), he walked into Shizuku. The pair catch up since they hadn't seen each other since middle school before Shizuku joined Cheerful*Days, and Tsukasa learns that Shizuku had quit and joined a different agency.
This leads Shizuku to mention they were looking for potential temporary members, and the next thing you know, Tsukasa has joined an idol group. Joining the pair is An Shirashi, the daughter of a (retired) popular street musician who instead took more interest in idol work and was delighted to hear of a possible temporary job and Kanade Yoisaki, the would-be composer for YUME YUME who got convinced to join the temporary members.
Tsukasa, An, and Shizuku are all ready to hype up Kanade whenever it is necessary. She isn't used to getting out much, and she needs stamina. In return, Kanade is inspired by them to write her new music. Tsukasa finds he loves idol work and considers it a possible way to become a star.
The new Vivid Bad Squad equivalent: Push-On Technique (Shiho, Airi, Toya, and Rui)
Toya Aoyagi was sick of classical music, so one day, he ran outside, bought a bunch of street fashion, and began to perform in a corner of Vivid Street. One day, he runs into fellow street performer Rui Kamishiro. Unlike Toya, Rui focuses more on telling stories. However, the two take an interest in each other and form Unruly Technique, a duo who tells stories through street music.
Meanwhile, Shiho Hinomori falls into the street music scene while wandering the streets alone after school. She had stumbled into a live house and had been offered a job there, which led to her listening to the performers and wanting to do something similar. Vivid Street quickly falls in love with her. She hears of another upcoming performer, Happy Everyday, who seemingly got her name from a certain ex-TV celebrity. Shiho learns that this IS the Airi Momoi, aka Happy Everyday, and the two team up as Push-On, a duo who will continue to pursue what they love, even in a different form.
These two duos come together after facing against each other in an event and hitting it off. They decide to form a quartet with Toya as the unofficial leader. As mentioned, Rad Weekend never happened. Ken is still a big figure in the scene, however, and his cafe is a frequent stop for the group.

tuned into Plestia's live with Rahma Zein's second account (she got shadowbanned). key moments:
plestia talked about her adjustment to living in australia. "it's 1:30am now and it's normal for me and many palestinians who live abroad to be awake hours into the morning. i am scared of sleeping. because of the time difference, i'm scared if i sleep i will wake up to bad news. in gaza i was scared of the sound of the bombs, here i am scared of the quiet."
contacting family and friends in gaza is near impossible. "sometimes i feel like a crazy person, calling 20 times in a row hoping that on the 21st time the call might go through."
on the destruction of entire communities and neighbourhoods: "i'm scared when i go back to gaza i won't recognise it anymore. someone sent me a picture of my neighbourhood, and i couldn't tell it was mine at first. all my favourite places, cafes where the aunties used to give me extra food and ask about my day, have been destroyed. i dread looking at my gallery or seeing snapchat memories because most of these people in the pictures are no longer alive."
rahma asked plestia to talk about one story that stuck with her. plestia said "i remember walking one time on the 'safe corridor', that's what they called it anyway, and i saw an older woman clutching onto a donkey cart where her son's body was, refusing to let go of it. i asked my colleague what the smell was, he said it's dead bodies under the rubble. it was the first time i familiarised myself with the smell. the son's body was decaying and the woman told me about cats and animals eating away at it. i've had children talk to me about birds eating away at their parents' decomposing bodies and not being able to chase them away."
"it seems so silly to go to hospitals for minor sicknesses now. i can't even think about how many palestinian children are going to be terrified of hospitals now. there was a girl who was taken to the hospital to get treatment for injuries by one of the bombs, and while she was in the bathroom another bomb landed nearby. the impact from that sent the ceiling crashing down on her.. she got another injury while getting treated for her first one."
"i hate how people talk about our resilience - as if it's okay that this is happening to us. we are only surviving because we have to, because we have no other choice."
rahma brought up the way family homes are set up in palestine and asked plestia to elaborate. "basically, there are floors. someone will live on the ground floor, and then their married son lives with his children on the floor above them, and then their successors above them and so on. so when family homes are targeted, they wipe out entire families. many families officially no longer exist."
"i used to wear my journalist helmet and vest all the time, felt naked without it, even slept with the vest on sometimes until i realised it only made me more of a target. they didn't give me any protection, only headaches and back pain."
"i am an optimistic person, i loved covering sweet sentimental things, like at my graduation asking parents of top graduates how they feel about their children graduating. that's what i love reporting on. i wanted to cover things like that when i came back to gaza, show the beautiful side of gaza that the media didn't really show, but i didn't have the chance." "do you think they'll give you right of return?" "i can only hope."
plestia mentioned how hard it was being a journalist with limited access to the internet, charging facilities, no mics, lack of equipment and how difficult it was uploading things. rahma asked her what's one story that wasn't really recorded or posted due to these constraints; plestia said "the evacuations. sometimes they informed us about them, sometimes they didn't. you have no idea how hard it was, everyone looking for their family members, making sure every one was there, taking to the streets in 5 minutes and not knowing which way to go. i remember i went to my friend's house for shelter for 30 minutes before the first evacuation was announced and we ran to another family's house, stayed there for 2 days before another evacuation was announced. me, my friend, and that family all evacuated together to another family's house. there were already so many people there seeking shelter, it wasn't just one family staying there. none of us knew how long we had in any place."
before october 7th, palestinians were used to limitations on electricity. plestia used to plan her day's tasks around when the electricity was working. "for example when the electricity was on from 12 to 4, i would say i will do my laundry and charge the phones during this time. life wasn't exactly 'normal', but all of us pray to have those days back in comparison to what we are experiencing now." plestia also said that cars are running on cooking oil now because there is no fuel.
on hygiene: "many pregnant women have to give birth without any pain medication or medical attention. once we ran out of medicine, that was it. women who had to get C-sections couldn't stay to recover or get followup treatments because someone else needed the bed. we have no water, no tissues, no pads, barely any bathrooms. in the shelter schools you have to wait an hour before even getting to use the bathroom because of how many people are there."
"something you don't hear about is how many people die because of sadness. there's so many ways to die in gaza, because of the bombardment, because of starvation, the lack of resources, but i also know many elderly people who died because their hearts couldn't take it anymore. i have been in gaza before and lived through 4 aggressions, but nothing compared to this one."
a recurring sentiment that was echoed in the video: "sometimes i thought to myself: who am i recording this for? because we've already shown everything, we've already talked about everything. everything has already been said, the proof is everywhere, nothing i talked about today is new." rahma said the first video posted about what's happening in palestine should've been enough.
she is 22 today. plestia's closing words: don't stop talking about us, don't stop boycotting, don't stop protesting, please don't get bored of fighting for palestine.

FROM FOGHORN TO FRICASSEE ON 7 INCHES -- WELCOME TO 1984, KIDS.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the "Chicken Squawk" 7 inch vinyl EP by American hardcore punk band MILLIONS OF DEAD CHILDREN (MDC), released in 1984 under R Radical Records.
MINI-REVIEW: "MDC deliver a funnypunk classic in “Chicken Squawk,” an uproarious C&W (Country&Western) thrash tune which belies a more serious argument for vegetarianism — it even has banjo lead breaks! On the flip, “Kleptomaniac” rates as a strong, catchy thrasher, although “Death of a Nun” suffers from lackluster performance and production values. A mandatory EP, however, and the foldout sleeve is extremely interesting and informative."

Various - America Sings: The Original Soundtrack of the Disneyland Attraction (Disneyland, 1974) - Designer unknown
America Sings was an audio-animatronic rotating theatre show that operated at Disneyland from 1974 to 1988. It was housed at Tomorrowland's Carousel Theatre, which was previously the home to the Carousel of Progress before that show moved to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida (the Carousel Theatre is now the home of Star Wars Launch Bay). The show was a humorous walk-through of the history of American music, including traditional folk songs and songs from modern musicals (though why "Auld Lang Syne", a song that predates America, is on the setlist is beyond me). Burl Ives voiced Sam the Eagle, who narrated and also sung through the show.
The show kinda reminds me of the 1981 Ralph Bakshi film American Pop, which has a very similar concept, but is primarily focused on popular music as opposed to traditional, has a narrative of sorts (generations of a musical family living through different periods), and also shines a light on the darker aspects of American music. It's also loaded with profanity, sexual themes and drug references. For kids, it is not.
You can't talk about America Sings without mentioning that a cast member was killed in a freak accident when she was crushed by two walls when the rooms were rotating. No wonder the attraction wasn't that much beloved....
This particular version came with a read-along book, which was common with kid records at the time. A version without the book, with a different cover, was also released.
Tumblr media
Both releases are rare, and, aside from videos from those lucky to have taped the show back in the day, this album's the only evidence of the show's existence circulating (and yes, the album does present the show in its entirety).
