How To Ride A Chollima
Chollima: I am here to register for the race. Not that it will be much of a competition.
Me: Great! Species?
Chollima: Chollima. Obviously. (mutters) Ignorant Americans.
Me: (flips through rulebook) Okaaay here we go. Winged horse, Eastern—dang, a thousand Chinese miles in a day? That does sound tough to beat!
Chollima: Yes, I’d suggest simply crowning me now if not for the complaining of the other racers.
Me: And “too swift and elegant to be mounted by any mortal man.” Well, good on you for having the humility to join us today!
Chollima: …I beg your pardon?
Me: You must have a rider if you’re entering this race, right?
Chollima: Of course not! I would never disgrace myself or my species by letting one of you unworthy creatures ride me like a common horse. I shall be racing alone.
Me: Ah… well, that’s awkward. Since it’s sort of a requirement. (points at rulebook) Every racing mythic has to have a passenger. How they support each other is between the two of them, but it IS required.
Chollima: What?! Why would they make such a ridiculous, demeaning rule?! And why would any intelligent equine allow it?!
Me: Look, we can have a long argument about teamwork and fairness of loadbearing requirements, but the simple fact is that you can’t race without a humanoid partner.
Chollima: (terribly conflicted) But… but I MUST have that stunning handwoven horsecloak that goes to the winner… and yet I can’t go against the chollima code…
Me: …So you need a rider…but not someone who’ll actually “ride” you…
Chollima: …Yes…?
Me: (scribbles something on registry) I have a solution! Furgus, cover for me.
Furgus: (rolls his eyes)
——
(At the starting line, the chollima hovers a bit above the ground. A human hangs from a sort of fabric sling strapping her to the chollima’s neck, his front legs wrapped around her. A significant number of other racers are snickering)
Me: (gleefully) This is gonna be SO GREAT.
Chollima: This is utterly undignified.
Me: Hey, you’re racing, right? And carrying isn’t technically the same as riding! Yay loopholes!
Chollima: You’re lucky I now have to win without dropping you, just to silence these jeering buffoons.
Me: That’s the spirit!
————
(A/N: Shoutout to author W.R. Gingell’s books for introducing me to the chollima and thus inspiring a new way to annoy horse mythics :D If you like urban fantasy, go read her City Between series, it’s great!)
If you enjoyed this, there’s a bunch more in my How To Guides for Mythical Creatures masterlist!
(EXTRA NOTE: @kittyrinn-aiko pointed out it’s supposed to be a thousand Li, aka the Chinese mile, which is about half a kilometer. So we’re looking at around 310 miles in a day. That’s still pretty dang fast for a magic horse (standard horses can do 25-30), but you know this guy wouldn’t correct the misunderstanding, so I’m leaving it in XD)

North Korea said a second attempt to put a spy satellite into orbit failed early Thursday, but the reclusive country vowed to launch another in the coming months.
The Malligyeong-1 reconnaissance satellite was mounted on a new type of carrier rocket called the Chollima-1 and launched from a station in North Pyongan province in the early morning hours, according to the state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA). The first and second stages "all flew normally, but failed due to an error in the emergency explosion system during the flight of the third stage," KCNA said in a statement.
North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration is investigating the cause of the accident and plans to attempt a third launch in October, according to KCNA.
North Korea attempted to launch its first spy satellite on May 31, but it crashed into the West Sea after an "abnormal starting" of the second-stage engine, KCNA said at the time.
MORE: North Korea satellite launch fails, with another promised as 'soon as possible'
In 2018, North Korea claimed to have put a satellite into space but international analysts later said that wasn't true.
Thursday's second attempt coincided with joint military drills between South Korea and the United States, which North Korea has long denounced.
The U.S., South Korea and Japan all issued statements "strongly" condemning North Korea's use of ballistic missile technology for its launch, which despite its failure they said is in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. The three allies also reaffirmed their commitment to work closely together to achieve "complete denuclearization" of North Korea in line with the U.N. Security Council resolutions.
"This space launch involved technologies that are directly related to the DPRK intercontinental ballistic missile program," Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, said in a statement, using the acronym for North Korea's official name. "The President’s national security team is assessing the situation in close coordination with our allies and partners."
"The door has not closed on diplomacy but Pyongyang must immediately cease its provocative actions and instead choose engagement," Watson added. "The United States will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the American homeland and the defense of our Republic of Korea and Japanese allies."MORE: US, Japan and South Korea's leaders hold historic meeting as threats from China, North Korea loom large
The incident was assessed as not posting "an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, territory, or that of our allies," according to a statement from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which noted that it would "continue to monitor the situation."
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the military "was prepared in advance through identifying signs of an imminent launch."
The office for Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed that he held a telephone call with his South Korean and U.S. counterparts on Thursday morning to discuss North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch. The three officials agreed that the launches are happening "in an unprecedented frequency and in new manners" and that they "constitute a grave and imminent threat to the regional security and pose a clear and serious challenge to the international community," according to a statement from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Group of Seven, an intergovernmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the U.S., also released a statement condemning "in the strongest terms" North Korea's launch.

3/6? Cherry Candy could be a baseball player (using the candy as a ball) and also have cherry candy balls for hair. (Sort of similar to how Alchemist's hair looks) Gummy Shark could be a marine biologist, Almond Milk could be a nurse/doctor or the Parfeadia Instiute, Raspberry/Caramel Arrow could be Raspberry Taffy or Raspberry Float but I don't have any ideas other then them maybe being a swordfighter, and Coffee Pavlova could be a chollima or qilin.
I like the idea of Cherry Candy being a baseball player. Not sure I’ll give her Alchemist’s hair, I might just give her a singular bun
Gummy Shark being a marine biologist ain’t a bad idea either
Maybe Almond Milk could be a nurse or doctor at Parfaedia, though I think I might have seen another idea I was interested in. I do still like the idea and I’ll take note of it
Yeah honestly Raspberry and Carrow is a hard one to come up with. I’ll take note of Raspberry Taffy and Raspberry Float, since they ain’t bad, but I think I might want something more in leaning with the caramel aspect
I feel like I’ve already done a bit of a qilin before, so I suppose I can go chollima. Still not much on CP’s character though

EXPLAINER-Why North Korea's satellite launches draw condemnation
SEOUL, Nov 21 (Reuters) – North Korea seems getting ready for its 3rd effort this year at introducing a reconnaissance satellite, a relocation that might show as questionable as the nuclear-armed nation’s weapons tests. Earlier efforts on May 31 – North Korea’s very first such launch given that 2016 – and Aug. 24 ended in intense failures when its brand-new Chollima-1 rockets crashed into the…

North Korea Readies Satellite Launch, South Korea Alert
Tumblr media
North Korea Poised for Another Spy Satellite Launch This Month South Korean experts predict that North Korea will attempt to launch a spy satellite this month, with potential launch dates falling between October 10 and October 26. The Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU), a South Korean think tank focused on inter-Korean issues, anticipates this move. According to KINU's research fellow, Hong Min, North Korea seems more interested in conveying a political message with the satellite launch rather than ensuring technical perfection. They are expected to prioritize speed over precision. This would mark North Korea's third attempt to place a spy satellite in orbit. KINU director Chung Sung-yoon speculates that in the lead-up to this announcement, North Korea may showcase its advanced nuclear capabilities as a provocation. Last month, North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration experienced a setback in their mission to put the reconnaissance satellite Malligyong-1 into orbit using the new-type carrier rocket Chollima-1. The rocket failed during its third-stage flight, just three months after the initial launch also ended in failure. Despite these challenges, North Korea does not seem concerned about the reliability of their technology. The cause of the failures was considered a minor issue in terms of engine reliability and the overall system. Senior diplomats from the United States, Japan, and South Korea expressed their disapproval of North Korea's actions, warning that such provocations would lead to increased cooperation among the three nations. North Korea, in response, issued a warning that they would deliver an "overwhelming and sustained response strategy" to the United States. The Pentagon's recent report on weapons of mass destruction had labeled North Korea as a "persistent" threat, along with China, Russia, Iran, and violent extremist organizations.
