Into the Cold Void Again
Kiss fans are true expressionists and they come in all the colors of the rainbow. The anniversary of Psycho Circus this year demonstrated this quite well once again. The frames of everyone's own parameters were practically spread everywhere and consequently the likes and dislikes shot in all directions. With this album pretty much everything is in it, from obsessive idolization to allergic reactions and abysmal rejection. Reason enough to dedicate myself to at least one of its titles today, but more on that in a moment.
I'd like to remind myself beforehand how Psycho Circus was released 25 years ago. Of course, I was in possession of a CD copy on the day of the release, read all available reviews weeks before the release, and as a great friend of the Revenge/Carnival of Souls line-up, I didn't really ride the great wave of euphoria of the 1996 reunion. Accordingly, I set my expectations for Psycho Circus relatively low, at least as a precaution, despite anticipation (0). And that was the sticking point for me at that time. These rather low expectations could hardly be exceeded at that time, and only in cases of individual songs (1).
But, that was a very long time ago. In the meantime I even like Psycho Circus as far as possible, and as often as I get the chance, I call it the Crazy Nights of the masked Kiss (2). And with that, I should slowly face Into the Void (3), though using a small but nice loophole, in the form of a hint of a self-quote. That little standout interlude somewhere in the middle or after the solo, and who wouldn't have recognized it, of course it's our dear old and ever reliable friend Cold Gin.
Side Notes:
(0) Because, after all, I am a Kiss fan. I can't get out of my skin that quickly in that respect.
(1) Like Within, for example, which remains one of my absolute favorite Gene songs to this day. And of course, I will be more than happy to talk about this song in the not too distant future.
(2) I also had a hard time with Crazy Nights for years, probably even decades, but very similar to Psycho Circus this has turned into a single pleasure. They are simply two good Kiss albums with good Kiss songs. Nothing more. And nothing less. The rest just depends on taste, tolerances and the degree of commitment of the respective bean-counting, and I know quite well with bean-counting.
(3) Probably the one song on Psycho Circus I've been most disappointed with, but even that has subsided over time. It used to be the chorus that I always found repulsive, which for me was mostly due to its downright mediocrity and uninspiredness. But the song itself is even a good one, and Ace's vocals are top notch. For me, the opening riff and to some extent the verses definitely stand out most positively. The chorus, however, to add a little resonance to my dislike, could have been written in the middle of the night on the toilet, but even that doesn't necessarily make Into the Void a bad song, because you can have one or two good ideas on the john. These simply don't always have to please everyone.
Into the Void is highlighted, Cold Gin starts from the beginning. Have fun with both:

maple syrup, coffee, pancakes for four
a cute little steddie dads ditty based on this tweet
Steve chuckles under his breath and flips the page.
He’s got his back against the headboard in the low lamp light. It’s late and he’s reading some goofy romance novel that Max left for him last time she was over. Something about people on vacation. He doesn’t really know or care but it’s kept his mind occupied long enough.
Eddie’s sat at the other end of the bed, taking breaks from lightly strumming his guitar to jot down melodies or lyrics or whatever it is he writes in that notebook of his that he carries everywhere.
When Steve tries to start the next page the words stop being about the shitty hotel the characters are at and they start being measurements, instructions.
He slams the book closed in his lap and tugs off his glasses, gets Eddie’s attention and meets his eyes, curious.
“Do you think we should’ve gotten chocolate chip instead?”
Eddie rolls his eyes with a smile and sits his guitar beside him. Huffs a laugh under his breath as he crawls up to wrap both long arms around Steve’s waist.
“Well,” he drags it out, dramatic as always, “Since both of the girls said they liked blueberry better, I’m putting my money on blueberry being the better option.”
Steve’s weighing the options in his head, nodding because he knows Eddie’s right.
“I know, Robbie flips out every time we have regular pancakes but,” he huffs, runs a hand through his hair, “It's pancake day. It has to be perfect. Do we even have syrup?”
Eddie pulls his head back from where he’d rested his chin on Steve’s shoulder, his eyes now less amused and more confused.
“Okay, I thought we were stressing because it’s her first sleepover, what in the world is pancake day?”
Now Steve’s the one who looks confused, down-right offended.
“Uh, hello? Didn’t you have pancakes on Saturday morning after every sleepover growing up?”
Eddie wrinkles his eyebrows up. “No? Uncle Wayne woke us up and took us to the diner.”
And, well. Steve can forgive that.
“Oh. That sounds pretty fun actually.”
Eddie snorts.
“Yeah it was. It was probably just an excuse for him to go see his lady friend but I wasn’t gonna turn it down.”
Steve laughs and smiles at the thought of a grumpy Wayne trying to hit on the waitress and a child version of Eddie flicking eggs across the table.
“I wish I could’ve seen that.” He drops a kiss to Eddie’s temple before he continues. “When I was a kid, my mom always made a big pancake breakfast with syrup and whipped cream and sprinkles and it was the best part of the sleepover. I’ve always wanted to do that for Robbie.”
Eddie’s smile is soft and he’s tangling their fingers together over his lap.
“Aaaaaand now that she’s old enough it has to be perfect. That right?”
Steve nods, lets out the breath he was holding in, lets some of the tension seep right out of his own skin and lets Eddie carry it for a while.
Eddie shifts and tugs Steve so that his head is tucked just near where his guitar pick sits in the hollow of his throat.
“Well, lucky for you, when I took the girls to Rob’s room for bed earlier, when I kissed her good night she told me this was the best day ever.” He tightens his arms around Steve and he can hear the smile in his voice. “I think you could feed them cereal and they’d think it was Christmas morning.”
Steve can’t help the smile on his face at the happiness that his daughter brings him. At the idea that letting her friend spend the night is the best day she’s had in the six years of her little life. Thinks that it might be top five days in his own thirty-two.
He snuggles down further into Eddie’s arms and laughs when the man huffs and reaches to turn off the light.
He kisses his chest and closes his eyes.
“Good night, Eds.”
“Good night, baby.”
He falls asleep to the sound of Eddie’s breathing and the hushed giggles down the hall, more excited than he’s maybe ever been.
Eddie’s set an early alarm to go check for syrup.

the lodger's new roommate or the lodger's old roommate, a tale of woe
i mounted them using the forty pound command strips and the lodger ripped them down thrice. message received
also, i'm into site specific maps lately and thinking a lot about hand drawn maps. i drew a map of the roads between my girlfriend's house and mine and i like how it turned out
i treated myself to early solstice presents this week: fancy new earbuds that sound so good, new trail shoes, a pink krink k-42 with an opacity that will make you swoon, and a t-shirt by an artist i like. i am still struggling with wanting stuff
i hosted all four of finn's cats yesterday while pest control treated their building. we had a nice visit. kreg keeps saying she wants to live here but i know she would miss her finnie
it got in the high fifties yesterday. i opened all my windows to let the fresh air flow and did a big clean. it was such a pretty day
i have been writing more poems lately. they are built like tiny verbal wunderkammer and filled with bright treasures i find on my rambles. i think, with practice, they are getting better
i'm making cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, and roasted chicken this weekend. a makeup dinner for the traditional thanksgiving feast i missed last month
this year has been so packed full of change for me. a struggle that has plagued me for the last four years ended in a most dramatic way. a brutal passage that i survived, mostly, intact. i wish it could have ended some other way, but at least now, it's finally over

Got to Bang Gin
You read that correctly. Bang Bang You is back, with a Vengeance. And twice as many surprises (and rip-offs) as in the first part. When I realize that Bang Bang You must be one of the most unloved Kiss songs in fan circles, at least in its vociferous hardcore section, it surprises me all the more which not necessarily unpopular klassiks are hidden inside.
So let's start with the intro and verse riff. This is nothing other than a variation of the unmistakable main riff from Cold Gin. A little more ironed and folded over so it's not instantly recognizable, yet left with enough wrinkles to create a subtle sense of familiarity. This feeling is of course all the more reinforced by Paul's vocals, but I've already talked about those, still I'll mention again that they do a good job of paraphrasing a particular song from Dressed to Kill (1).
And then there's always the chorus, which literally screamed klassic Kiss when I first heard it ages ago, and appealed to a deeply rooted feeling in me. Nope, I'm not refering to the bang lyrics, but the chorus riff, which is pushed a little out of tune by Paul's balls-in-the-zipper voice and the keyboards, but once you think them away, there's not much else left but the mighty majestic final riff of Got to Choose. It really couldn't be simpler, could it? Coming straight from my first owned Kiss album, and the second one I've ever heard.
So that's the situation, folks. Bang Bang You, not a klassik, but contains more klassiks than almost any other Kiss song of the 80s. And that on Crazy Nights. Perhaps its opponents should reconsider their aversion. It might be worth it.
Apart from the lyrics, of course, but they're actually not much worse than Love Gun's.
Side Note:
