“Very cool, you two,” she huffed, trying to ignore how her face burned and her heart very nearly exploded when the two of them smiled. “Come on. We have to get power back before the entire dorm gets to freezing.”

Immediately after she said those words did she realize that it didn’t matter in the slightest to them if it did or not. Yuu was the only one who would get cold. “We could just squeeze ‘ya,” Floyd suggested with a grin, still within a hair's breadth of her face. “Then you’d be nice and warm!”

“You all have cold skin,” she reminded, gently patting Jade’s arm in an attempt to get him to release her. Miraculously, he did. “Sorry my dorm’s so…ramshackle,” Yuu decided on, trying to humor even herself to avoid the truth she would instead be crying at. At least the twins laughed at that. “I have a candle somewhere I can light. Azul, can you help me?”

“Of course.” The prefect didn’t miss the faint hoarseness of his voice, especially as she didn’t let go of his hand to instead pull him with her to find it. It thankfully was still where she remembered it on the coffee table, much to her relief, and she put her fingers through the brass ring the bugia had.

Azul helped her light it with a quick fire spell, and she thanked him, liking how that made his eyes twinkle, too. “Okay, now—” Yuu didn’t know whether to sigh or laugh when the two of them turned back to where the Leech twins were, only to find them nowhere in sight. She chose the former when Azul did the same, his pen’s magestone glowing brighter to illuminate more of the room.

“Jade, Floyd, you’re both being quite rude,” he called, getting no response from either of them. Azul sighed again, the beginnings of an apology forming on his lips, but both of them stiffened when a laugh suddenly sounded in a direction neither of them could pinpoint, echoing in their ears like a siren’s song.

Faintly, with a voice that was growing in strength with every second Yuu stayed surrounded in darkness, she wondered if the two of them really meant they were going to kill her. “They’re probably going to try to scare us,” she mused, more to steel herself for the surprise than anything else.

Azul hummed, and Yuu felt his fingers twitch from where she held them. “It’s best if we turn on the power as quickly as possible.” Yuu nodded. Illumination came in handy when a possible homicide could occur. She’d rather be able to see her killers than suddenly get her throat slit in the darkness.

“Quick question,” Yuu said, looking over at Azul. "How much time did the two of them spend here while we were in our first contract?" It'd seemed like the two of them had always been at her heels, making sure to keep every step of her path painful and sharp, but the two of them had a knack for being everywhere at once when they wanted.

He knew what she was asking, and his grim face answered it without saying a word. “Every moment they weren’t at the Longue or with you, they were here,” he told her. 

Wonderful. They probably knew Ramshackle as well as her, then. Maybe better, seeing as they had magic to protect themselves with, so they could go into the more dangerous rooms.

She took a deep breath as she pressed the FaceTime button, her camera facing her ceiling so that her face wasn’t visible yet.

Aiden answered after just a few seconds, smiling widely with his glasses slightly crooked on his nose and his hair all messy. “Hey!” he said. “I bought and started reading the book you recommended; ‘The Initial Insult’. So far, it is absolutely amazing. Very dark and depressing, but amazi- Why am I staring at your ceiling?”

Spirit sighed. “Aiden,” she said hesitantly. “Please just. . .” She sighed again, not exactly knowing what to ask him not to do. Then she lowered the phone.

Aiden’s smile vanished, his eyes widening and his mouth opening and closing in shock.

“Spirit. . . your face.” He shook his head, looking dumbstruck. “What the—? What happened?! Oh my God, are you okay?!” He looked closer at the phone, looking so concerned and Spirit forced herself to smile a bit to calm him down.

“I’m fine,” she said. “I just—” she hesitated, simultaneously wanting to tell him the truth and shield him from it at the same time. “I had a little incident,” she settled for saying.

Monday Snippet 🎄

Thanks to the lovely @crinkle-eyed-boo and @wabadabadaba for tagging me!

This is a little snippet from my fic for the @1dchristmasfest, Worries, Kisses and Surprises, which comes out this Friday!

Harry frowns as he checks over his paper grocery list, strolling the frozen food aisle at the shop.

Turkey for the meal, mince pies for Jay, carrots for Dan, red wine for his Mum, white for Gemma, brussel sprouts for Robin, parsnips for Lottie, mashed potatoes for Fizzy, glazed ham for Phoebe, Yorkshire puddings for Daisy, pigs in blankets for Ernest, eggnog for Doris, gravy for Louis, and peas for himself.

He managed to find most things and ingredients he needed, though the shop was all out of parsnips and he had to substitute them for turnips. Those were similar, right…? Hopefully, it’ll be fine because he really doesn’t have the time to stop at a different store right now.

He has this nagging feeling at the back of his mind like there’s something missing, but he can’t quite put his finger on what.

He and Louis are hosting their first joint Christmas dinner tonight, and to say Harry’s been stressed out about it would be the understatement of the year.

They’ve been dating for two years now, and although they’ve both already met the other’s family on several occasions, this will be the first time they’ll mesh both of them together for one large-scale event.

As if worrying that their parents and siblings would get along well together wasn’t enough already, that also meant Harry had to cook Christmas dinner for 13 people (because of course, he’d chosen a man with half a dozen siblings as his life partner), all of which had different food preferences and specifications.

He feels like he’s been running around like a headless chicken for the last week, picking up last minute bits and pieces here and there, making sure the house is spotless and ready for guests, baking up a storm of desserts, and wrapping everybody’s presents to put under the tree.

He swears the only thing that’s keeping him sane at this point is Louis.

Louis, who sat on the kitchen counter while Harry was busy making sugar cookies last night, passing him utensils and ingredients as Harry asked for them. Louis, who then did all the dishes when Harry was too exhausted to even think about it once he was done, because “you’re doing all the hard work, cleaning up is the least I can do.” Louis, who tried to help him wrap the numerous presents for tonight and made him laugh until his ribs hurt from how poor of a job he was doing. Harry didn't even mind having to rewrap them afterward; the laughs had been worth it.
