Happy 7th birthday to one of our very favorite people… Olivia!!! 💖 Olivia is a phenomenal young person… kind, silly, loving, generous, smart, and thoughtful! She decided to go vegan at age 5 because she loved animals and proudly tells her teacher and friends why she doesn’t eat animal products! She’s even encouraged her school to have more vegan options in the cafeteria and they are now carrying #vegan chicken nuggets at school on Mondays! 🙌 When Cromwell was in the hospital, Olivia was very concerned. She decided to start a lemonade stand and raised over $100 to help with his medical care costs! She and her equally wonderful Mom, Ashley, have also started adopting former battery-cage hens and giving them a wonderful, loving home. an eye for an eye

There's one question that's been turning in my head more intensely than all the others:

Why isn't there more compassion in this world?

And I don't just mean compassion for the people who are deemed deserving of it. I mean for the people who desperately need it. I mean for the person who has been hurt, and ends up hurting others. For the person who causes pain, and feels pain themselves.

Where is the compassion for them? The mercy? Because, in my mind, suffering is suffering. It's something that shouldn't exist. Hurt and pain shouldn't exist, but they do. And the people who cause pain are always victims of it too. Only, because of who they are and why they should be punished, pain becomes acceptable.

But eliminate the variables of 'who' and 'why' and just ask 'what' this time. What is happening? What is wrong with this picture? What is this person feeling, and what are they going through?

And ask yourself: if it was anybody else- your daughter, your best friend, somebody you actually loved- if it would break your heart then.

The sad truth is, we live in a world where people respond with "you get what you deserve." A world of eye-for-eye and tooth-for-tooth.

You know the famed saying, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." I can't accept a world of blindness. I can't accept a world of eye-for-eye and tooth-for-tooth. I'd like everyone to keep their eyes and teeth, please. If we're lucky, a good number of those eyes will someday see some beauty in this universe, and a good number of teeth will someday move about to speak kind or inspiring words.

But even if not, I don't want to join in with the eye and teeth taking. I want to leave a little peace in the midst of all this chaos.

I have to try, at least. I have to embody peace and kindness and compassion.

And maybe, just maybe...compassion is contagious.

For those of you who don't remember Addie, she is an amazing little girl with a special love for chickens who lost her own best hen friend (Camilla) and the rest of her flock, along with her entire home, in the Paradise Camp Fire in 2018 (scroll for photos). Now in their new home, her parents built a beautiful new coop and surprised her with brand new chicken friends! While she will never forget Camilla, that devastating loss no doubt makes this day even more precious to her.
