RESEARCH: MARIE ANTOINETTE’S ICONIC HAIR

Known as a key part of Marie Antoinette'a iconic aesthetic and appearance, Antoinette's hair can be easily recognised as one of the most iconic hairstyles in history. Much like her fashion style, Marie Antoinette used her excessive hair as a way to express her personal style and aesthetic, with help from her French hairdresser, Leonard Autié.

THE POUF:

The pouf was a hairstyle popularised by Marie Antoinette, and pioneered by her hairdresser. First debuted in 1774, at the coronation of her husband of King Louis XVI, the pouf became Antoinette's most well known and remembered hairstyles. Using hairpieces, tulle, ribbons, flowers, feathers, powder and other decorative elements, Autié would create hairstyles that reached four feet tall and often included symbolic accessories and ornaments. An example of this was a model ship that was used as an accessory in Antoinette's hair, that sat on waves of hair in honour of a French naval victory.

RESEARCH: FEMININITY IN HISTORY

THE BRA REVOLUTION

The emergence of the bra dates back to the 14th century, however it wasn’t until the late 18th century that corsets and bra’s were heavily associated with changing the physical appearance of the female body. 

During a high time for revolt and protesting, the 1960′s, the anti bra movement began in retaliation against the feminine norms that were pushed onto women. The Miss America Pageant in 1968 attracted criticism and protesters, who criticised the pageant for valuing women's bodies over their brains.

I wanted to research this as firstly I felt it would be interesting to give more context through my research by looking at history related to my theme. I also felt the bra revolution would be interesting to research, as it was ultimately about women rejecting the standards that are constantly being pushed on them. I feel it would be interesting to include this within my designs somehow, maybe through including shapes inspired by the garment of a bra, but using this as details within my designs, rather then the original intentions of a bra, which is censorship.

The Independent Spirit Awards happened last night, which surprised me because usually they were right before the Oscars but not this time. I thought I would post from it and maybe I still will tomorrow but I am not today. Not a lot of pictures from it. It's too bad, I tend to like it better as an awards show as it tends to more often honor movies I actually like. Anyway, Gigi Hadid is here today because she was in CR Fashionbook and that was top notch. Like really, just an amazing and amazingly for me shoot.
