I was obsessing over Cruel Summer all day yesterday trying to decipher which summer Taylor is referring to -- if it's even about a specific one at all. And I've decided that it's not autobiographical like a lot of the Reputation songs were. There's no clear event that led to this; it's just her narrating her life experience and emotions through a killer song. Before the album even came out, there were speculations that the song was a reference to the infamous summer of 2016, where everything that could have gone wrong did. But if that were true, then that would make the song about Tom, which doesn't add up. 1. "I don't want to keep secrets/just to keep you." Their relationship wasn't secret at all. The media infiltrated so much of it that people started nasty rumors that they were just together for publicity, and based on Tom's 2017 commentary about it (https://www.gq.com/story/tom-hiddleston-cover-profile), the pressure of being in the public eye was too much for them to handle. Bless Tom for sticking up for Taylor. 2. "I snuck in through the garden gate every night/that summer/Just to seal my fate." These lines make Joe the more likely candidate....except he and Taylor started dating in the fall of 2016, not the summer (because she was with Tom at the time). And I highly doubt that the instability of Cruel Summer's summer relationship could apply to Taylor and Joe after being together for 8 months (November - ~June). So the summer of 2017 is also out. What does this mean? We need to do what Taylor wanted us to do and stop trying to assign each song a muse "as if the inspiration for music is as simple and basic as a paternity test." I'm guilty of this, and you probably are too. I LOVE the challenge of interpreting every line and thinking up countless possiblities of what each word could mean. I was an English major, so overanalyzing literature is kinda my thing. But at the end of the day, if Taylor really wanted to share intimate details of her life with us, then she would. She didn't mention names or cities or ages, because that doesn't matter. Her ideas matter; the emotions in her songs matter. And I for one can relate to the feelings of longing, desperation, and anxiety that comes with meeting someone new. You never know how something is going to end, but you'll always remember the way it made you feel.
