And sometimes the hybrid offspring are all fertile and there's a risk of the gene pool being polluted and eventually all members of a population might become hybrids. Invasive (in the US) Rainbow trout and cuttroat trout hybrids are fertile as are many african cichlid hybrids (cichlid hybrids are a problem in the aquarium hobby). And sometimes entirely new species results from hybridization.

Yeah species can be weird. Some play nice, and fit into neat little boxes like they’re supposed to, while others just throw the entire concept out the window and do what they want.
