Settle for Me
It's not often I go on dates during the holiday season. The reason should be obvious: most people put a heavy emphasis on such dates. After all, these dates are mostly for family, friends and...loved ones. But when one is still getting to know another, a heavy significance can be put on the periods between Christmas and New Years. So, when I told Dikottir that the Darkfield experiences had returned to Sydney (after he'd gone to several earlier in the year: Seance and Flight), he was eager to cross another one off his list. And he didn't want to wait until after the holiday season to do so.
Thankfully, I did have a few days off between Christmas and New Years and could join him in one such experience: Coma. Although, I had a feeling he'd only chosen Coma so he could find a place to lie down for a good thirty or so minutes.
Not realising Darkfield would only be on at night, Dikottir and I initially planned to meet up for lunch. It was only when Dikottir was perusing tickets, and only finding sessions from 6:00 PM onwards, were we able to deduce these were evening-type events. Thankfully, I was able to message Dikottir before he'd left his apartment and we rescheduled our initial 11:00 AM start to 5:00 PM (wherein a rainstorm drenched Sydney in between).
Dikottir managed to spot me at Kinokuniya despite the fact I'd cut my hair short because of my iconic red jacket - the one I got during my trip to Egypt and Turkey back in 2023. As I waited for him, I'd perused the shelves of the bookshop before picking up one of the latest volumes of Monstress to while away the time. Once the initial greetings were done and dusted, Dikottir and I strolled down to Pitt Street Mall where he did some shoe shopping at the local Footlocker (and to use up his gift cards) by getting a new pair of black Asic joggers.
And while I had wanted to get a few new pairs of shoes (I ended up going to the Birkenhead Point shopping outlet), there wasn't any styles I liked.
From Footlocker, we wandered down to the Lego Store. We had a brief exchange about Agatha Christie and the twists she incorporated in many of her mysteries, even as I ogled the Orient Express Lego set. And perfect for any person with an obsession for trains.
Not that I have one, mind you. Instead, I fell in love with the NASA Space Shuttle. Although, of course, the Lego Store in the city didn't have it in stock at the time (I'd pick it up later in January at another store). Our visit to the Lego store went a little long and before we knew it, we were legging it over to Barangaroo. Of course, Dikottir deferred to my superior sense of direction and we arrived there without too much hassle.
But what to say about Coma?
Coma had us clamber into bunk beds inside a shipping container. What objects we did have, we put at the foot of the bed. There was a white pill one could ingest to heighten the experience. And there was a set of headphones (which had the volume on way too loud for my delicate sensitivities).
Once everyone had settled and either taken the while placebo pill (or not), the lights dimmed until all one could see was inky blackness and we were lulled by the audio descriptions we could hear.
While the experience wasn't terrible, I suppose some of the illusion of being in a coma was shattered by the fact I could still move around if I so chose. And this was heightened by my state of discomfort of how I'd arranged my belongings at the foot of my bed (and that I was forced to sleep directly on my back).
For the most part, though, Coma wasn't too bad as it narrated a few events and also primed the brain for several scents that were funnelled through a nearby vent on the right side of each bunk. My only complaint would be the loud buzzing at the end, which proved to be far too loud and irritating.
I have sensitive ears. I jump at loud noises. It is never good to have loud annoying buzzing near me.
After our Darkfield experience, we strolled back towards Barangaroo and the food options found therein. In the end, we settled for Ume burger and chatted jovially about the state of the world and the partisan nature of Australian politics.
Why does it always feel like our political parties are at each other's throats? Why are they so unwilling to make concessions for the betterment of the people? Honestly, I feel as if most of the major parties treat each other like exes who really enjoy having hate sex because it's the only way they get off with each other.
There just doesn't seem to be any middle ground.
In any case, after the date with Dikottir, I returned home and began to ponder if after three dates I could see a future with him. But while I didn't have butterflies fluttering around in my stomach at the thought of him, Dikottir was also inoffensive. We shared quite a few similarities. And if we were marrying not for love, I didn't feel like there would be anything wrong with me choosing him as a life partner. The two of us would probably just end up doing our own things and then come together only when needed.
Plus, he had a decent job, seemed to have a good relationship with his parents, and he had a delightful dog that he liked to share pictures of. What wasn't there to like?
And yet, this was not the romance I'd been sold in the stories and movies over the years. Quite literally, there was no 'spark.' No Anne Hathaway's lifting of the foot a la The Princess Diaries. Although, to be fair, we haven't even reached the stage of holding hands.
But the real question: do I want to hold hands with Dikottir?
Is this what non-ace/aro people feel compelled to do?
I mean, I did wonder what it might be like if he were to hold my hand but my brain couldn't quite fathom what would happen afterwards. Would he then hold me in his arms and I'd 'drown' into his chocolate brown orbs?
Yes, I know I'm being facetious now but every time I ask someone what it's like to fall for someone, I don't get anything definitive. Just 'oh, you'll know it when you feel it.'
In any case, I've left the door open for future dates with Dikottir. He seems to be the strongest candidate so far. And I suppose I could so far worse. Now, if only I could get any sort of warm fuzzy feelings to start in some way or another because neither of us deserve to just 'settle' even if it would be a practical proposal.
Now, if only I could enter a 1920s black and white dance number with Santino Fontana.

In the spirit of the festive season, I went and collected some food photos I have stored up over the years, and hopefully wet your apetite and get your ready for what will hopefully be a feast this festive season.
If I remember correctly, the image above was a lasagna kind of thing and it tasted every bit as amazing as it looks.

I am a sucker for meat and potato combinations.
One of the guiding principles that chefs use, is related to the amount of colours on any plate that they've made. So if a dish includes two vegetables, meat and a carbohydrate, it will have more colours also indicating that it's a more nutritious meal.
Same philosophy can apply in photography as far as colour and texture are concerned, with how the golden-brown of the gravy is the dominant colour, and then the sprinkles of green herbs and orange carrots complementing the image with some addititional colours, and other than that, it just looks amazing.
But that is just a starter compared to what I've got next.

This caramel mountain thing photographed above was a real highlight at a wedding I shot a few years ago.
The 2nd image is in close-up and hopefully gives you an idea of how tempting it is when you see it, and that close-up in the 2nd image, hopefully gives you a sense of how the caramel oozes down those doughnut-like balls, and then placed in this mountaineous pyramid-cone form.
The photograph below is of a platter of chocolate sponge cakes and icing desserts served in shot glasses, and it was a personal favorite at a birthday party I photographed.
I liked how the light from a nearby window gave the rim of each glass a distinct and repetetive shape across the frame. Keeping only on of the glasses in focus means getting the viewer's eye to look into one of the glasses, and that very tasty icing inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I am aware of the difference between shooting food that looks good on a plate in realtime and then real, actual, food photography, where actual food design may be required.
The mushrooms photographed above were actually placed in a box with a black cloth on the floor of the box, and then cutting a square hole into the side of the box, to let in some light, and in this particular case, I placed a diffusion gel over the square hole.
I can't remember if I had any lights going to shine through, or if I was outside and the sunlight was enough, but I definently tried to hit a sweet spot between lighting the mushrooms but not flooding the image with light.
In all likelihood, I would have stopped down on the camerá's aperture to about f10 or f11, and it really is a game of how your eye sees it as to what constitutes "too much light".
Slightly different to the photograph below in which we wer outside with a chair and a black cloth and just made a stand out of the and placed the orange peel on the seat.
I don't remember how hot it was but there was no artificial light used for this shot and when shot in black and white, the texture of the orange peel really comes to life, just makes for awkward-shaped, tree-like lines.
Tumblr media
Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed that, and got a kick out of it or even took something away from it, even if it was just how scrumptuous the food looks.
Thanks for perusing this post.

A Way to be Healthier with Naturalism
Today, I got special experience. I did my live blood analysis thru microscope. Gladly, it's not that bad! But stupid me, I didn't take a picture of it ㅠㅠ. My red cells in round shape which is normal but kind of stick with each other but not exactly look like a chain and some of them still moving. The result also showing that I have a little amount of small parasite and we saw one of my red cell kind of get infected by parasite. you know the parasite's shape look cute yet unwelcoming things for our body. I also have some toxin that may get from covid vaccine because of covid vaccine especially moderna, they contain aluminum and that also make my white blood cell look smaller than it should be. Fortunately, My gut bacteria still in good condition although some of them is bigger (it's indicated that my blood's pH is in acidic condition) but liver and gallbladder stone also there (I need to remove it ㅜㅜ). From this condition, I got an advice to detox myself to be healthier. 1. I need to take pine needle tea or black seed for removing the toxin 2. Correcting my diet (Reducing acidic food -which is i love itㅜㅜ-, eat more alkaline food - I need more green stuff in my plate- ) 3. Drink more hydrogen water, this also for detox 4. Get the glutathione injection or IV as the free radical neutralism. 5. Do the liver and gallbladder detox protocol -using epsom salt 6. Continue taking my iron supplement 1 week before, during and after my period to prevent from iron deficiency 7. Continue take probiotic, for this one you can either take a probiotic supplement or kombucha - i love kombucha so much-. Probiotic is good to keep our gut alive
Later on, I will write down the details of every step that I pass through. Take care of your body, your mind and your soul everyone!

Zeiss Jena Laboval ?3? I think, documentation for the Laboval series online starts and ends with the Laboval 4. By all accounts this is their upper mid range lab scope, with Amplival being the top of the line before you get to big scopes that have to be installed by a technician.
There's a large variety of Zeiss scopes that were manufacturered on this side of the iron curtain, as you can see this is an East German piece. Pretty good condition, scratchy condenser optics but the objectives and eyepiece seem to be in great nick, from a quick inspection, and that's what matters. Eyepieces are 10×'s, Objectives are a 3.2 semiplanar, a 10, a 40 planar (which I think will get a lot of use), and a 100 oil immersion. Pretty normal setup.
I don't have slides and slips yet so I can't do a proper mount, but this is pretty promising for just sliding a sheet of paper into the slide holder. Proper mounting will improve the focus plane immensely. 32× and 100× so far.

The illumination is off-centre and uneven but that's resolvable and anyway it might be fun to move to LED. I also want to build some top illumination brackets for opaque subjects.
I had like. A kiddies toy microscope growing up and I got as far as trying to make it do darkfield with pieces of cardboard, but never something this professional, binocular optics is such a big step up on its own.
The only real issue I've seen so far is that the stage Z axis is very sloppy, huge backlash. Everything has been stuffed with new grease recently so at least it moves smoothly, old scopes and old typewriters both have a tendency to seize if they're forgotten for more than a few months at a time.
I'll swing by the lake and pick up some algae and protist samples later, and I need to order slides and slips. Also I can print some darkfield and oblique illumination filters.
Probably not going to fuck too much with oil immersion, but who knows, also I'll keep an eye out for water immersion objectives.
I think that with an appropriate head replacement and some filter hacking I could get phase contrast microscopy up and running, probably scavenging some Amplival parts. I'd need to see. I can definitely get fluorescence microscopy working with an illumination upgrade. It would also be nice to gut the electronics and put in a simple battery powered illumination system I can charge over USB so I don't have to rely on wall power. Even the stock tungsten lighting is only 5W at 6V so that's easy to swing.
Objectives are DIN 45mm I think, and it sounds like many Eastern Bloc microscopes use standardized head mounts. I'll also be able to print a lot of parts for this, but I'll probably want to get some black filament for optical reasons.
First I want to do some protist sketches, I picked up a protists book at a used bookstore a while ago and it got me really hyped to do protist watching. This is definitely at some level me trying to replace macroscopic wildlife spotting in my life.

some miscellaneous observations from the past 5 days in scotland

Illustrated with these goofy photos my partner took of me vaping out a cracked window that doesn't open all the way!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
★ It turns out, or rather, I remembered after some years' time, that I actually like public speaking and reading/performing for an audience. I find it less stressful than more relaxed social interactions, having to speak to a doctor or plumber or what have you, meeting a friend of a friend for the first time, etc. The expectations and duration are clearly defined, I don't feel any pressure to "tone it down" in order to seem normal/chill/regular/polite, I get to be the undisputed focal point of attention, and people at least have to act like they're interested in what I'm saying!
★ My partner and I went to see some Fringe shows while we were in town. I especially enjoyed Myles and Dan's sketch comedy (pretty self-explanatory; I will note that they make out on stage, like, 150% more than I was expecting); What You See When Your Eyes Are Closed/What You Don't See When Your Eyes Are Closed, a poignant and bizarre audience participation-heavy piece about dreams, nightmares, aging, love, and the nature of seeing/observing; Darkfield's (yes, I know, it sounds like an evil version of Garfield) Eulogy, in which you sit in a completely dark shipping container and listen through a headset as you're taken on a binaural soundscape journey through a Kafkaesque hotel with a guide who probably isn't all that trustworthy. It's the weirdest combination of extremely unsettling and almost ASMR-like sensory pleasure!
★ We spent a little time in Glasgow, and...it kinda looks shitty compared to Edinburgh, but I liked/felt more at home with the vibe! It reminded me of Pittsburgh and Philly! That combination of trash/run down-ness and beauty springing out of it and big city chaos and people who maybe come off a bit rough but are really kind/generous.
