The Gang Comes Together - Burt Gummer/Heather Gummer, Kate Riley/Earl Bassett, Rhonda LeBeck/Val McKee, Nancy Sterngood.
A/N: Day 1 of @yeehawgust , here’s some more simple little @thetremorssaga goodness. Totally G rated.
Burt will never explain why he and Heather took in the two boys who helped out the first time the graboids came around. Nancy and Mindie had moved into their shared home soon after the first incident, the concrete boundaries newly laid helped a lot and even as Mindie slept Nancy settled with Heather and Burt, learning how to protect herself better.
Val of course had been the first to come back, buying up an empty home and asking Burt’s help to settle the house and make it Graboid proof. He’d smiled when Burt walked him through the new finds, nodding and setting to work. Rhonda had settled in easily, working as both the local science tutor and a travelling scientist.
Earl had returned later, Kate tucked quietly into his side, steady but clearly a little wary of meeting so many of his friends at once. Burt had smirked slightly at her, moving to wrap an arm around her shoulder when Earl and Val broke off to talk, steering her towards first Heather, who had come home only when she heard Nancy was homeless now, and Nancy, then Rhonda.
Rhonda had smiled as she greeted Kate, discussing science easily with Kate, smiling when Kate relaxed a little, her laugh warm when Kate muttered about getting way too used to smelling like graboid guts.
“That happens… just let it. You can always come shower when the day’s done.”
“You guys have showers… that work?”
“Yeah, Burt’s kinda smart like that.”
Rhonda shrugs and Kate laughs.
“Sounds good to me…”
“You guys got a house yet?”
“No…”
“Get the feeling the reason Val got us such a big one is so you guys can move in…”
“Is that okay with you?”
“Sure, why not… at least I wouldn’t be just listening to Val pine for his best friend.”
Kate had laughed again then shrugged.
“At least now we can work together too, right?”
“I’d love that.”
Rhonda agrees with a smile.
It's a fresh start, and one she sorely needs, thinks Kate. The ‘posse’ of friends Burt had mentioned turned out just right. Although she wonders if this is all she had to meet or if more might show up.

“Normally after an incident like this, you’d be sent home with a stern warning for endangering yourself and others,” Ozpin said as he looked Ruby over. “However, I think given the circumstances, I can make an exception.”
Ruby paused for a moment, her once tapping fingers no longer tapping the desk. “An exception?”
Ozpin nodded and passed over a brochure to Ruby. “You’ve heard of Beacon academy, correct?”
“Of course I have, its where my parents went!” There was another pause as Ruby put a few things together. “You’re Professor Ozpin, the headmaster, arent you?”
Ozpin smiled. “The very same. Normally, you’d need to be seventeen to even consider applying to Beacon and then pass a rigorous entrance exam. Though, given the circumstances of putting your life on the line to stop Roman Torchwick, I think an exception is in order since you’ve shown us what you’re capable of. However, unlike the rest of the students, you wont be going through initiation.”
“I… dont understand. You’re offering to let me go to Beacon, but… I wont be going through initiation? I thought that was part of entering.”
“Under normal circumstances, it is.” Ozpin laced his fingers together as he rested his elbows on the table. His eyes wandered around the interrogation room and then back to Ruby as a small smirk crossed his face. “Since you’ll be younger than the rest of the students and skipping ahead a couple years in order to join, you’ll be the first member of a special mentoring program to make sure you’re not only ready to attend classes, but to make sure that you’re caught up with everything you’ll miss.”
Ruby slowly nodded. “Then… I want to do it.”
A smile crossed Ozpin’s lips as he stood up. “An airship will take you to Atlas to start the program at the end of the week. Do not miss it.”

Ruby found herself frozen in fear as she stood in the Atlas Academy entrance hall, hands shaking as she held her bag to her chest. The instructions she had been given was to talk to Ironwood and be brought to the future Beacon students that would oversee her lessons. Though, what she didnt quite understand was why she had to come to Atlas to begin with.
“Miss Rose,” Ironwood’s voice boomed through the entrance hall as he walked over to the young girl. “Follow me.”
Ruby quietly nodded and followed the General through the halls of Atlas Academy and through the military base that resided inside. She had quit paying attention to the twists and turns of the hallway as she followed him deeper into the Academy. Her fingers tapped her bag nervously as she took each step. With Beacon starting in a couple months, she’d do anything to make sure she was ready, but that didnt stop her from trying to question why here.
Ironwood finally stopped at a door and opened it. “You’ll be living here with Weiss Schnee and Penny Polendina for the next couple months as they mentor you to make sure you’re ready for Beacon.”
Ruby slowly stepped into the small dorm room and paused at the sight of the two girls waiting for her. “Hi, I’m-”
“Late.” Weiss rolled her eyes as she looked up from her book, a fresh bandage over her left eye. She stood up and looked over Ruby, a frown crossing her lips. “And apparently a child.”
“I’m… not a child.” Ruby sat her bag down and took a breath to try to calm her own nerves. “Just because I’m younger than you doesnt mean I’m a child.”
“Do not listen to Weiss,” Penny said as she practically bounced off her bed and over to Ruby. “She is like this to everyone she meets. It means that she wants to be friends.”
“I’m only doing this because Father wont let me go to Beacon otherwise,” Weiss retorted.
Ruby nodded and looked between the two girls. While Weiss seemed angry, Penny was almost her polar opposite, bouncing with excitement at the idea of meeting a new person. “Then, I wont let you down.”
“You better not. First we’ll start with the training room so you can show us what you’ve learned so far and that you can handle a weapon.” Weiss started to pack up her books and paused. “And if you prove that you’re not ready to be here, I will let the headmasters know they made a mistake.”
Ruby slowly let out the breath she didnt realize she had been holding as Weiss left the room with her bag. She slowly unpacked her weapon and dust ammo pouch, muttering to herself. “This isnt a mistake.”
“Then you will be able to prove it to her and she will be more open to teach you.” Penny smiled at Ruby and held the door for her. “And I am sure we will all become good friends.”

writing prompt 1: your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere
Fuck! You kick the worn metal of your borrowed car. Black smoke drifts from the heated hood. You wave the smell away from your face.
“Why now…!” It was a long strip of land that ripped between you and your next job interview. It was miles and miles of desert, dirt, and asphalt, but if the interview went well, you weren’t afraid to move to the next city over. “Fuck!”
You checked your phone. The interview was two hours away, and you were an hour from the inner city. Tow trucks infamously take all day.
In special cases, during certain emergencies, you were allotted a phone call to a certain extraordinary friend.
Pick up, pick up. The phone rang in your ear, taking longer than normal pauses between each ring.
And then finally…
“Hello?” A gruff voice answered.
“Kuwabara! Thank god! Listen, I need—”
“You don’t need nothin’! I thought we weren’t talking anymore!”
“We’re not…” you trailed off, laughing awkwardly, “but this is an emergency…”
Kazuma paused. “What kinda emergency? You okay?” Despite any grudges the tall man held against you, he was never one to turn down a friend in need. Your health, your happiness, it all came first before petty grudges and disagreements.
That’s why you two had remained friends for so long.
“My car broke down,” you whined.
“And Kurama’s too busy?” You could hear him picking up his keys and zipping up his sweater in the background.
“Well…” looking out over the vast empty terrain that surrounded you, you sighed as a crow made its slow way overhead. “I’m a little ways from home.”
Kuwabara pauses on the other line. “How far?”
“Like I need to borrow your inter-dimensional sword far.”
“Oh shit,” he sighs, “I’ll be there in a second.”
