I’m finally in the endgame of Diablo 4, by endgame I mean Act 6 to finally finish this campaign out. I did play Diablo:Hellfire on gog, Diablo2: Resurected, and the last season of Diablo 3 plus indie games while waiting for Diablo 4 to come out. Perhaps this will be a personal retrospective of the games and being a little upset because of how the campaign panned out for D4. Spoilers below.

In the opening scenes of Diablo 4 we are already having influences from Hell on two sides. Mephisto and Lilith. The first is more secondary than the second. Oh, why you ask? Because although you were “given” her petals she isn’t able to directly influence your character at all. You find signs of her throughout the game with more petals and visions. But the core gameplay is you being distracted by shiny things across the world while pursuing her.

Yes she has cut a path of cults and killed lots of people across the world. So has her former lover Inarius with his church. Both share extreme ideals, both are sides of the same coin. Lilith has more self awareness and understanding of her status, her mission. Inarius is a pompous jerk who wants to go back to Heaven and regrets ever being with her, doing any of this of creating humans, Sanctuary, the controversial Nephalem that are wrote out from Diablo 3. They get regulated to a group solving that problem as Diablo 4 takes hundreds of years into the future.

Diablo Immortal takes place in between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. It’s gameplay is refined Diablo 3. It’s okay.

On the side Mephisto gets to directly influence your character. Offering advice, help, guide you through certain areas. Prime Evil of Hatred who had the foresight that if he was helpful to random strangers then maybe they will help him. In previous games he was trapped but managed to influence people before being freed by his brother Diablo in Diablo 2. So definitely a mysterious character that hasn’t been explored throughly from a story perspective but this isn’t his story. Yes he can intervene as the Father, which he is as Lilith is his daughter, but he completely railroads the narrative to his side.

It boggles me that Lilith only directly talks to your character on the second time you use the Sightless Eye, an ancient magical artifact, and tries to influence you to joining her. Not whispering to you, taking to you, trying to justify her actions, how people who see her get it wrong. But no, the story is written as if its all been pre decided, which it has. I get it, can’t take any kind of risks of an ARPG game by adding the RPG elements of choices in it. Your player character has already made up their mind on the whole thing and accept her Father over her.

I know on one hand she is the villain of the game. On the other Mephisto has been too and wised up unlike his brothers. She helped create Sanctuary giving everyone something new to fight over as the Eternal Conflict will never end, she was looking for a safe place with Inarius. In the lore all this has happened before, it will happened again. Humans are just pawns in their game. And thats where the narrative is being left. Very Battlestar Galactica of it.

Exhausting is definitely the word for it. I’m not trying to justify her actions. Her and Inarius do. I just feel like there could’ve been more. And I am hoping the seasonal updates will help.

I guess I am spoiled by other ARPGs like Dark Souls series. Arguably they do give you some kind of choices, especially in Elden Ring, and I guess I wanted that.

The Diablo Immortal Blood Knight isn’t like WoW’s, and that’s perfect

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing with senior narrative designer Ryan Quinn and lead UX designer Chris Liao of Diablo Immortal about the Blood Knight, a new class in the RPG game. After playing too much WoW Wrath of the Lich King Classic, I started confusing Blood Knight with Death Knight and Blood Death Knight around five minutes into our PCGN exclusive. I therefore questioned the pair about whether the demon-slaying bruiser had been affected by Arthas' corruption or if the Diablo Immortal Blood Knight is a totally distinct being. We first saw the Blood Knight in the original Diablo, where they cemented themselves as one of the toughest melee enemies you face. This is the first time they’ve appeared as a playable class, so I asked Quinn why the team chose to go in a totally new direction, versus bringing back a class like the Amazon or Witch Doctor. “There’s always this balance between what is familiar to folks, what people definitely know they want, and what adds newness and freshness to the game,” Quinn tells PCGamesN. “When we rolled out we rolled out with these six Diablo stalwarts that people who have played a lot of Diablo before have already experienced. We love them, we’ve been playing them for ages; I’ve been playing a Barbarian since high school! “But you know the opportunity to make something really, really new and really unique for Immortal’s identity, and also to do a different sort of darkness for our dark classes than we’ve done previously with the Necromancer the Demon Hunter etc. was just something we couldn’t pass up.” The Blood Knight is a mid-range melee fighter, which automatically made me think of its WoW counterpart. As someone who ran a Blood Death Knight Draenei in WoW WotLK Classic (using a build from our WoW WotLK Death Knight guide, of course), I immediately drew parallels with the focus on life leeching and skirmish combat. I ask Quinn whether or not the team drew any inspiration from Arthas’ undead legions, and he responds “that is a super good question. I think from a class identity perspective – like blood manipulation – the visual and somatic analogues are there, but from an ability design perspective we were going in a fairly different direction. “Death Knights in WoW really tend to hew to this kind of tanky, more defensive archetype, and while we wanted some of that deliberate movement and tactical thought, with the Blood Knight we were looking for something that is more about pure aggression. I think you’ll find that, when you use some of their close-in polearm attacks they’re actually quite quick. Diablo Immortal Bug Refuses Players with Reduced EXP

Players of the RPG Diablo Immortal are being perplexed by a bug called "Diablo Immortal". The cause this time is randomly reduced EXP gained from enemies when farming. The free-to-play game's most dedicated players have been trying to find out what is causing the issue. This is causing farming to be less effective due to inconsistent changes with the earned experience values.

Reddit user staplepies posted his research on the topic to the game’s subreddit. Staplepies claim that they are one of the top experts in farming on the American servers, and were among the first players to reach paragon level 150, dug into the mystery of the experience bug in depth after spending time studying the phenomenon.

These examples are for Shassar Oasis, however Staplepies states that the issue "happens everywhere" due to their high paragon levels (generally 13-14 levels higher than server paragon levels), their earned experience has been reduced by 10%. This is Diablo Immortal's method of keeping their server's population at roughly the same speed.

Staplepies noticed some anomalies in their log's experiences values. Shassar Oasis is home to three distinct enemies - Dust Imps (54 XP), Drubs (48 XP), and Sand Golems (129 XP). These three numbers will only be visible in the area where everything is normal. (Staplepies points out that the bug also affects elite mobsts, but they have kept the numbers very simple). gaming blog

They then show a sequence of increasingly bizarre numbers appearing - some marginally lower, such as an Dust Imp awarding 42 experience instead of the expected 54, and others dropping as low as 1 or 2 experiences for a mob. Staplepies states that "when things get extremely bad, you will see runs and kills that are all bugged. is affected by a bug." Furthermore, the bug can affect the experience globes, which may drop randomly and not always match the bugged kill experience value.

Staplepies also tested the bug at the context of a party. They said that the bug affects all the players in their group but not at the exact time or with similar values. It happens when playing by yourself or in a group, and isn't affected by party size or proximity. They also checked to make sure that the random numbers were not coming from other sources such as events or quests and said that the problem is happening for folks who are at different levels (meaning that it's not necessarily tied to the experience penalty intended for being at a higher paragon level than the server).

There are other causes that they still have in mind - Staplepies says they have noticed an increase in errors in the experience value in certain zones, and the percentage of experience values that are bugged is different at certain times of day. They are currently investigating whether player activity within a server or zone could be the cause such as an excessive number of players could be causing an issue in the code.

Whatever the cause it's becoming a challenge for farmers who have a commitment to the cultivation of. Higher paragon levels could help players compete without spending too much money. Staplepies describes himself as a player with a modest budget, but he can compete with players who have resonance levels between 3-5x and 3-5x for several days. They can be among the first to achieve the new paragon level, until other players catch up. They also ask anyone with suggestions or ideas to help them discover the cause of this bug.

More On “Bright Souls“

People compare games to Dark Souls a lot, to the point that “X is the Dark Souls of genre Y” has become a meme, reached saturation, and died, all the while games journalists are still saying it unironically because they cannot find a better point of reference. People who didn’t seem to enjoy Dark Souls use it as a shorthand for a game that is punishingly difficult to the point of turning off most casual players, but with a dedicated fan base that welcomes and enjoys the difficulty.

So is Super Meat Boy the Dark Souls of platformers? Is I Wanna Be The Guy like Dark Souls? Is Dungeons of Dredmor like Dark Souls because of all the lore in item descriptions? Is the first Diablo the Dark Souls of anything?

What is it that makes people enjoy the difficulty of Dark Souls? Can we add this thing to a game, but make the combat easier, or is difficulty all there is to it?

I decided to talk to Dark Souls players to find out, and I catalogued a list of features from Dark Souls that set it apart from your usual JRPG or action RPG, not just mere difficulty. I wanted to find out what people mean when they say “like Dark Souls“, especially those people who like Dark Souls.

Interestingly, the first Dark Souls is hard in a different way from the later Souls games. Dark Souls 2 and 3 have tougher enemies, more enemies at once, more linear level layouts, and better/easier healing. These games keep the Estus mechanic and the fighting, but they streamline the rest.

If you asked people what being a Souls game means after only Demon‘s Souls and Dark Souls, they might have talked about the level design, the Metroidvania aspect of a half-open world, the secrets to be found, and the way the way the bonfires and Estus interact with the rest of the level design. If you go by that, then Hollow Knight is the Dark Souls of Metroidvania games.

What was kept in the other games was the deep lore, the oppressive atmosphere, the theme of decay and decline, and the way the main story was only loosely tied to the lore. In Zelda games, the connection between Link, the plot, and the fate of the world is much more apparent. Many people mean really mean “grimdark world with deep lore you can ignore if you want to and themes of decay, decline, and overcoming disproportionate adversity through sheer determination and perseverance“. In that sense, maybe Undertale is the Dark Souls of, well, something.

I was also told that the first Dark Souls allowed different play styles. You don’t need to be a glass cannon with a giant club and no armour, perfectly dodging every enemy blow. You can also play as a spell caster, or use a bow. That it’s tough, but fair, except in that handful of moments when it isn’t, when you are attacked without warning, when you have to do precision platforming with clunks controls, when you have to walk a tightrope through a rain of arrows, when you have to wade through... but I digress. Losing is fun, they say. Losing is part of the game. You can level, but you can’t really grind your way through. You can grind a bit, and the game rewards you for doing so up to a point, but you still need to be careful, because you can fall off a ledge. You can keep your souls safe and adopt a more cautious play style. People are split on whether enemies permanently de-spawning is a crutch for new players or a punishment for grinding souls and rare drops.

Dark Souls is difficult, but it has a way of balancing itself out. Enemies despawn, there are messages and bloodstains to help others find secrets or to warn them to not fall off a cliff. This has forced people to seek help online and created a large online community. You may think online gaming communities are especially toxic, but Dark Souls is not primarily a game where you beat each other (although there’s also PvP). Community members encourage help each other succeed.

Dark Souls is what has been called a wiki game. Other examples are DCSS, Minecraft, Don’t Starve, Reus, Stardew Valley, Terraria, or Spelunky. There are many secrets, loosely-connected systems, things you encounter but don’t understand the significance of. If a game has a sprawling crafting system, you might not ever encounter an item because you never craft the precursors you need to make it, or you encounter it in the world but don’t know how to craft it. Cave Story includes secrets you wouldn’t figure out during normal play, even when you beat the whole game to get to the good ending, like the Bubbler and the Nemesis. Yet you can play the game just fine without these secrets. Dark Souls seems to want you to look in a wiki, or in a strategy guide, or to ask your friends about secrets they found. Minecraft has gotten better at discoverability of crafting recipes in recent years, but added more content and peripheral mechanics to tip the balance into the direction of needing to look up more things.

In all of this, the Castlevania games and Hollow Knight come closest to being like Dark Souls without being a soulslike, followed by third-party soulslikes, e.g. Nioh and Ashen. But Hollow Knight still has the themes of decay, corruption, power and immortality as a curse, twisted shadows of former greatness, and overcoming against all odds through determination and perseverance.

Crashlands is a survive/craft/explore game where you play as an intergalactic UPS driver who crashed on an alien world. You must figure out how to survive and get yourself, and your precious packages, off the planet and on your way. What does Crashlands have to do with Diablo? It's the combat and gear. Pretty much everything you come across is looking to kill you and it is best to wheel around and shake and bake, all the while attacking with your homemade arsenal of weaponry. Even more similar is the game's surprisingly expansive gear system. Flux, the game's main character, rocks a primary weapon, four secondary devices (bombs, flamethrowers, freeze rays, that kind of thing), four trinkets that provide various bonuses, and four armor pieces. All of this equipment provides bonuses to damage, critical hits, move speed and more along with providing special abilities like life drain, stunning your target, and a whole lot more. She also has the power of Juicemancy at her disposal, which allows you to optimize your gear by upgrading it and rerolling stats until you get the stats you want. Crashlands is a fantastic game and merges the exploration and crafting of Minecraft with the combat and gear optimization of Diablo III.

Rogue Wizards (Review)

If you're looking for dungeon-delving action and gear optimization of Diablo III without the real-time pressure, Rogue Wizards is the perfect game for you. It features a great deal of variation in gear and slots in which to equip it, a town with upgradeable shops from which to buy and sell, and even a Treasure Goblin. Rogue Wizards feature a strong storyline, but the turn-based combat is king. Once you've completed the quests, there's still plenty to do in the game's Gauntlet mode, a high-score chasing dungeon where you see just how far you can go. The game is free-to-play and the monetization is easy to ignore if so desired, though I recommend the "Gem Drops x 2" IAP which brings progression in line with the premium Steam version.
