The story of a fiercely resilient young man grappling with a physical disability, and his efforts to solve a mystery unfolding right outside his door.  🏈 How Lucky has been sitting on my shelf a few months after it was one of my #BOTMpick last year. I picked it up recently because I heard it was a light quick read. I have to say I really enjoyed that the book was from Daniel's perspective even though he had lost his ability to speak and used a wheelchair. I appreciated how Daniel and those around him had developed a way of communicating with each other without words. I know sometimes when I'm close to someone it feels like we have whole conversations without saying anything outloud. I loved Travis and Marjani. 🏈 I feel like I learned a lot about Spinal Musclar Atrophy and based on my limited knowledge I felt like Leitch was making an effort to be informative and respectful of people who suffer from SMA daily. I also appreciated how Daniel valued his independence and was basically the amateur detective looking for Ai-Chin. Freddy Freeman / SHAZAM Jr Digital Commission, and thoughts. Last week I made a sketch and shared my thoughts on representation and Pedro Peña in SHAZAM, and right after writer Travis Rivas​ commissioned me to do a take on a Freddy Freeman that doesn’t erase his disability.

Citing Travis Rivas: “ ‘But a superhero with a disability just wouldn’t be believable... it would be like if Superman’s hand was made of Kryptonite.’ Words that were said to me when I spoke out against the disability erasure in Shazam. Because disability is seen as weakness, that we’re not as strong as abled bodied people. I’ve said before how when Freddie dropped his cane in Shazam and was revealed as abled bodied my heart sank. (...) I saw a recent Shazam piece that @lucianovecchioart posted about a different character, Pedro, and knew he had similar issues with the movie that I did. So I contacted him and I’m so grateful he agreed to do this piece of Freddie Freeman/ Captain Marvel Jr for me. I can’t stress enough how important a character like this would have been to see onscreen.”

I thought a cool way to include his walking crutch into the design was to have him bear the Wizard’s rod transformed into the crutch, an element already part of the myths, visually striking and doubling a mobility device as also an awesome powerful magic item. I must admit, until I saw Pedro’s body diversity being erased I never noticed the same applies to Freddie, and this is is character I’ve known since I a was little kid. The ableist narrative of physical disability as something inherently negative to fix and normalize does its work, even if done with “good intentions”. Freddy Freeman is a character created in 1941, considering context and history of comics superheroes he is a pioneer in disability representation. Which we can appreciate while ALSO question and discuss and keep updating. This is the same franchise that had a Fat Marvel for laughs and used to be so racist that some of its first stories can’t even be reprinted. What I mean is, the fact that the character already has an history of being presented in a particular way doesn’t mean it can’t change, be challenged and improved. I did really like Shazam in general, and also think it arises questions specially for us as fiction creators: What is the point of diverse representation if the narrative is to erase that diversity and frame that as something positive? What is the message chosen to be sent?
