I was saying to Emet earlier that one of the big things I was worried about with this fucking Kristi Noem thing was that she was trying to present this as "a rural thing"
Like "oh you city people just don't understand, this is just how it is in rural places"
And I really didn't want to see this just accepted by the news media, most of whom have never lived anywhere rural, as just "how we are"
Like, no, absolutely not, we don't just fucking shoot dogs bc they aren't good at being hunting dogs. Everybody I've ever personally known who hunts with dogs knows that a dog that is a bad hunting dog may be a great family pet. It's clear that people like that must exist - she's a person, after all - but it's not just How Things Are.
There are enough bad stereotypes about Rural People. We don't need more.
However, I have been relieved to see that a bunch of places covering this have had people on who grew up in rural places & who were pushing back on this hard, saying exactly that: no, this isn't normal.
Ugh.

Unfortunately my dog did not recover from her illness, and I had to have her put to sleep on Saturday as she was suffering pretty badly at the end.
All the previous submissions have been posted, but I’m going to leave them closed for a while as I deal with her loss.
Forgive me if I don’t reply to messages or tags for a bit, but I may reblog posts occasionally while looking for a distraction.
Thanks for understanding 🖤

He is gone but he had such a happy day leading up to it. He wasn't in pain, just exhausted and ready to sleep but still happy.
Tzapo was truly such a good good boy and managed to get so much love from so many different people. He did so many things and his life was so big. He saw the redwoods and got to go to a bison ranch. He got to see and smell all the horses at the Kentucky Horse Farm. He loved watching horses gallop. He got to go to wildlife centers and zoos, including the National Zoo in DC, and get to scent so many animals he'd never otherwise get to experience. He stayed in hostels and hiked in several states. He went into caverns with me and he got to cross fields of lava rock in Eastern Oregon, which he was so brave and excited to do. He has had a good life and been the best friend to me. I'm so glad I could give him an end where he was still so happy and able to do his favorite things without pain or confusion. He was the best service dog and friend I could have ever asked for. And now he can rest and be comfortable forever.

To any whome it may concern; I am very saddned to announce that Ginger passed away earlier today. Thank you so much for holding her in your thoughts and prayers until now.
While we made some initial progress with her health after finding and rescuing her, the severity of her dysplasia and the time she had spent immobile in the cold led to bowel issues that became quickly critical over the last couple of days—none of which was helped at all by the stress or the gravel she ingested after being abandoned.
Unfortunately, right when we most needed to get veterinary assistance, the weather completely prevented us from seeing the people we had an established treatment plan with. We were going to have to wait another two days to get her seen, which was really distressing, given her rapidly mounting pain. All I could do was pray to my Witch Mother (who oversees death, healing, and family ties).
At the very last second, though, a vet from out of town was able to be contacted, and she changed her plans so she could come to the nearest Humane Society with just enough time for me to reach her. Unfortunately, she didn't believe there was anything else that could be done for Ginger at this point, beyond compassionate euthanasia. At the very least, however, the timing ended up being exactly right for both my husband and my mother-in-law to come during their lunch breaks and send her off lovingly with me. Together, we held her and massaged her, and I whispered a death croon in her ear as she sank into a final rest. We we all wept for the path she came to us on, but we rejoiced for the chance we've had to offer her comfort, love, and companionship over the last week. Despite everything, she had many moments of peace and connection with us, which I hope and believe improved her remaining time.
I really wanted to be able to carry out the funerary rites we normally do, as a final respect for her—which includes cleaning anointing the body and then adorning the dead with local flora for a final mourning portrait—but the harsh weather and frozen ground made a burial exceedingly unrealistic. So, in the end, I took her body to a funeral home that was willing to cremate her. It was upon arriving there that I discovered a patch of white Hellebore nearby, which struck me as auspicious, given their association with death in general, and with my Witch Mother in particular. As such, I plucked a single blossom and used it to take a makeshift mourning portrait, then took the flower home with me to incorporate in a ritual send-off for her spirit, along with a fumigation of Benzoin and a dish of treats she especially enjoyed.
May the Quietus embrace you with all of the kindness and tenderness you deserve, dear Ginger. ♡

My dog Ollie has reached the end of his life. After his initial cancer diagnosis I was convinced he only had weeks left, but he held on for a year. He gave us that. He’s been the dog people dream of having. Loving, loyal, obsessed with tennis balls and counter surfing only when you aren’t home.
He’s going to go to sleep at 8am tomorrow I’m having trouble processing that this is my last night with him. He stayed his bright puppy self for so long, but it’s finally gone away. It’s time.
He was born on the Fourth of July, the fireworks are for him for the rest of my life

Has anyone dealt with a dog mourning another dog? I had to have my one dog put to sleep and now the one remaining is being weird as hell. I’m just not sure what to do for him other than keep our normal routine. Any insights/experiences appreciated.

We had to put down my oldest dog today. It's not unexpected - he was old and really sick - but it doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye.
Here's to 16 years of an amazing friendship. Hope you rest in peace in doggy heaven, buddy! 💋

If timetravel ever exists I refuse to believe that Laika died alone in space.
Like humans cried over oppy, they wrote a book about rescuing the Kaikoura cows, and they regularly bring strays home from foreign countries despite the money and effort.
There is so much that would not be allowed with timetravel, but you cannot conicnce me that they would not save Laika, it is exactly the kind of thing the type of people who first grew a zinnia in space because of Star Trek would do.
And if timetravel exists then so too would the ability to mess with the data, so we wouldn't even know it had happened.
Laika didn't die 7 hours after take off, she died several hundred, maybe several thousand years in the future, over 17 years old and cuddled up on her comfy bed after living a life of luxury and love.

He was seemingly doing really well yesterday but today he is too weak to walk steadily which is why it needs to be today. He's not hurting but he's weak. Once he realized I had some scrambled egg and ice cream for him though he was excited to move. This boy is so happy to have his favorite foods still.
