How to Properly Socialize Your Dog
Tumblr media
Socializing a puppy is a lot like drumming up friends of your own: The more you mingle, the more progress you make. Introduce a puppy to all the new things you can (people, places and other animals). When a puppy isn't exposed to new things, social development may become stunted or, worse, regress. The goal of socializing is a confident, outgoing dog that isn't shy or aggressive.
Practice Safe Socialization
"But wait!" you say. "What about disease? My veterinarian told me to keep my puppy at home until his last puppy shot. And you're saying I should go out? Is that safe?"
Your veterinarian is right: Your puppy is at risk of contracting diseases from other dogs before his full immunity is in place. This is why you shouldn't go anywhere where dogs you do not know hang out — parks, dog events or pet stores — until your veterinarian gives the go-ahead. But that doesn't mean you should leave your puppy at home.
Use common sense. Plan safe outings. Take a puppy class: Good trainers know the risks and work to minimize them by keeping the training area sanitized.
Impart a Life-Saving Skill Set
Why take any chances at all? An unsocialized dog — whether fearful or aggressive — is at a higher risk of ending up in a shelter with little chance at being adopted again. Some experts argue that, in the long run, behavior problems kill more dogs than parvovirus does. Perhaps that puts the importance of proper and safe socialization into perspective.
Limit the Paw-Holding
Unlike wolves or coyotes, dogs are genetically predisposed to become part of human society, but it's not always easy. So socialize, and remember that the world is full of scary things, especially to a little puppy. At times, even the boldest of them may become paralyzed with uncertainty, especially when faced with something they have never seen before.
Your response to this fear is very important. Don't soothe your pup. Petting him and saying, "It's OK, baby" (or something similar) gives your puppy the idea that being scared is OK and that you're rewarding him for the behavior. Instead, be matter-of-fact and encouraging. Let him work it out, and when he takes that step forward, praise him for his courage.

Can Dog Training help with Agression?
Yes, dog training can certainly help with aggression. Aggression in dogs can be caused by a variety of factors, including fear, anxiety, territorial behavior, or lack of socialization. Proper training can address these issues and help to modify the dog's behavior.
A trained professional dog trainer can work with your dog to identify the root cause of their aggression and develop a tailored training plan to modify their behavior. This may involve techniques such as positive reinforcement, desensitization, and counter-conditioning, depending on the specific needs of your dog.
It's important to note that aggression in dogs can be a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. It's best to work with a qualified professional to address any aggressive behavior your dog may exhibit, rather than attempting to address the problem on your own.

Took Apollo to the Santa Claus parade yesterday. Besides barking at Santa after he "woofed" at him, 😁☺️ he did pretty good. Some days look a lot like this. Couch. Blanket. Fluffy pillow. Apple TV and a dog. . Wait... what!? Yes, Rey can have some snuggle privileges. She’s earned them. She’s not aggressive to any humans or animals. She’s not reactive. She loves everyone and everything. Obeys off leash without a problem, and is probably the most delightful dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. She’s definitely earned this privilege. . In fact, I’m teaching her to lay on my toes on command. Raynaud’s turns my toes blue, freezing, numb and painful on some level so with a command she will warm them up for me. Now back to another nap; see you all at 12noon for a live video chat with Chad Mackin! . . #attheendofyourleash.com #dogtraining #Riverside #InlandEmpire #SoCal #California #Superdog #Superhero #HanSolo #Rey #TheLastJedi #besomedoggy #idratherbewithmydog #domorewithyourdog #blackbeautybreed #dogtrainer #showdog #servicedog #SD #dogsocialization #DisneyDogs #RawFed #NutritionConsultant #ProtectthePets #myhero #belikelu (at At the end of your leash) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsbMfiWAZhr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1efszoic69u0g

Do you go? I just read a post on Next-Door about a person having their 16-year-old blind dog attacked at a off leash dog park… While it must’ve been traumatic. And I feel very sorry for the owner and the dog. And quite honestly, the other owner and the other dog… This is not that shocking to me. This was my response. Not to shame, but to educate. “Sorry to read about this. And sorry to hear that this happened. Though I am not shocked about the incident quite honestly. As tragic as it must have been… Introducing dogs is a process that shouldn’t be rushed. And in dog parks… There are no slow introductions. All the dogs are thrown together and expected to get along. Dogs are dogs and will always be dogs. If you put 20 random people in a room… turn up the excitement level… Not all of them are gonna get along either. Unfortunately, dogs at times use their mouths and teeth to communicate. And tragically often it escalates quickly. As someone who volunteers as a local shelter, where we run playgroups, we always do slow introductions and make sure that the play styles are appropriate for each other. There are certain dogs that will play rough, certain dogs that want to be left alone… Certain dogs that will pick on frightened dogs… Certain dogs overreact to excitable dogs… If you mix the wrong dogs… It can go sideways fast. It requires skilled handlers to read the yard constantly and be ready to step in before an issue happens. I have seen too many dog parks where animals are a 100 feet from their owners and their owners are not looking at all. I would never suggest someone bring a senior dog who is blind to a dog park… The risks are way too high. Not every dog in there is going to be the best, most social dog. Not every owner is going to be paying attention. Not every animal is going to play the same way. Or be respectful. Sorry to read about your dog again. I just hate hearing about things like this. I’m not trying to shame anyone. I’m trying to save you and other people from having this happen in the future.” #dogpark #dog #dogsofinstagram #dogs #doglover #playsafe #dogfight #dogsocialization (at Dog Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaNFd03J8Td/?utm_medium=tumblr
