When you agreed to go to Duskwood, you had no idea what you were getting yourself into. You had assured Jake that you'd never go there, but that was no longer the case. He as well promised you that he wouldn't just vanish once this was over, but just after the accident in the mine, he didn'tansweredyour texts.
Lilly told you that both he and Richy had been declared dead, but they couldn't possibly do this to you, could they?
Jake assured you that everything would be fine. And what about Richy? He promised you that he would no longer run away. And although you didn't want to think about that, they never replied, and you eventually gave up on both of them..
When the bus finally came to stop, however, all of your worries disappeared.
"Last stop, Duskwood!", the bus driver yelled.
Everybody was rushing to get out of the vehicle as soon as possible. Duskwood attracted a great number of tourists after the night, which has been a part of your nightmares ever since. So you were happy to get off the bus. It took you some time to find your friends because of the large number of people at the bus stop right now, but you eventually did.
"There she is." Dan grinned and immediately took your luggage after a quick hug.
Jessy quickly took his place, followed by Cleo, Lilly, Thomas, and Hannah. You thought it was crazy to see them in person now. Hannah in particular. After the incident, you wrote with her. She was quite lovely, and you got along well so far.
Jessy grinned when she said, "It's so good to actually see you in person."
Even though, two males a little further away drew your attention, you all started walking away from the bus stop . You still took a moment to look at them. Both were wearing hoodies and buried their hands deep in their pockets. Their hoods were tucked down far enough that you couldn't see their faces. They appeared identical to one another since there was nothing remarkable about them. The only thing that separated them was their height, as well as the color of their hoodies. The taller of the two was dressed in a light-blue hoodie, while the other was wearing a black one. You just continued walking, regardless of how strange they were. Given how odd Duskwood was in general, it wasn't surprising.
Everyone thought it'd be a great idea to celebrate your arrival, so the first stop was Phil's bar.  Even Phil was overjoyed to meet you in real life. He  flirted with you whenever he wasn't busy with other customers. The rest of your friends sat a little further away from you so you could have some alone time with the bartender.
"Action or horror?" he asked.
He's been doing this for several hours. He'd pick two options for you to choose from, and you'd have to choose which one you preferred.
"I think it depends on the movie."
"Chocolate or Dogs?"
You laughed. "That isn’t even the same category anymore."
Phil smiled at you before he served a random guy a drink. But it wasn't just any random guy; it was the one with the black hoodie from the bus stop. He still wore it and his hood was still pulled up, but you didn’t want to ask him about it.
"You haven't answered yet." Phil leaned over the counter with a smirk on his face.
"Hmm, I'm not sure... Perhaps chocolate dogs?"
"Way to go."
"So, do you know who this person is?" You nodded to the guy, who was sitting a few tables away with his blue hoodie-wearing companion.
He shrugged. "This is the first time I've seen them here. They're strange, but I don't see why they shouldn't stay as long as they don't cause any problems."
"I saw them at the bus stop, too."
"Perhaps they noticed the same gorgeous girl I did and followed her, hoping she would notice them too."
"You think? But I didn’t recognize anyone else from the bus stop except my friends. "
Maybe you weren’t the best at flirting, but Phil liked it and laughed it off.
"I'm talking about you, silly."
"Oh... I- thank you."
"Well, as much as I like seeing my brother and best friend joyfully flirting with one another, we'd want to spend more time with Y/n as well." Jessy grinned and dragged you back to their table.
Phil was mad at first, but the customers managed to divert his attention.
"You see those guys?"
Jessy pointed that out after you sat down. She wasn't directing her comments at random individuals; she was directing them towards the hooded dudes.
"Um, yeah, they were at the bus stop."
"Good," Cleo sighed, "so you recognized them as well."
"We didn't say anything sooner because we didn't want to scare you," Lilly explained.
"We were being followed. They also never let you out of their sight. "Dan, too, made a point.
"That's something Phil mentioned as well. He claimed it's possible they think I'm attractive or something. Maybe I should just talk to them? "
"Are you insane?" Lilly inquired.
"After all, what should they do? You and Phil are watching me closely. It would also be better if we knew what they want. If they actually intended to harm me, they'd follow me around until I'm alone anyway. Oh, and look at that; Alan Bloomgate himself appears to be in the mood for a drink. "
You pointed at the door, which had just been opened by the police officer.
Dan shrugged. "She's right. We are at least eight against two if something goes wrong."
"That's a yes, in my opinion. Nothing will happen."
You gave them a kind grin before heading over to the hooded men. Phil saw you moving and decided to go over in five minutes, just in case there was something wrong.
"Hi.", you simply said when you sat down on the empty chair.
"I assumed you'd be over here an hour ago," said a voice you're all too familiar with.
Even though you would never hear it again. But here he was. Richy.
"Richy? Jake? Is that really you?" you wondered.  You've already realized that the other person must be Jake. Otherwise, who would Richy be going out with? When everybody assumed they were dead.
"As much as we enjoy seeing you. It would be better if you didn't mention our names. "
"I-... Okay, I get it. You were declared dead. But then why didn't you write me? "You promised not to just disappear," you said to Jake before turning your attention to Richy. "And how about you?  Didn't you say you weren't going to run away any longer?" "
"It's a long story, and we'll tell you everything," Jake replied. "Someday."
"When you say someday, what do you mean exactly? For a month, I believed you were dead. Do you have any idea what I was going through? I thought I'd have lost you, and now you want to tell me about it "someday"?!
"We're sorry, Y/n, but this isn't the right place for a discussion like that," Ricky said, looking down at the table when Phil approached them.
"Is everything okay here?", he asked, more Y/n than the other two.
"It turns out you were right." You stood up with a fake smile on your face. "They're weird."
"Wait!" Richy called out to you in a deeper voice, hoping Phil wouldn't recognize him.
In his hand, he had a piece of paper. You were furious, but you wanted to give them a chance to explain themselves, and the piece of paper most likely had a phone number on it, or at the very least a location and date where they wanted to meet, so you accepted it. You returned to your friends after following Phil back to the counter and thanking him.
"And? How did it go?", Cleo asked.
"They're just a bunch of jerks. There's nothing to be concerned about."
You remain in the bar for a little longer, until Phil closes for the day. He also gave you a tour of your new "apartment."  He had a free one over his bar, that you could use. Because you owned your own little business and didn't need to work from home, you could stay here as long as Phil was okay with it. You and your friends agreed to meet up the next day, before they went home too.
You were ready to go to bed after a brief shower, but something stopped you. The ringing of your doorbell kept you up. Who rang your doorbell at two in the morning? Normally, only your friends would be aware that you were there, and they would all be at home. They made sure of it by writing messages once they arrived.
But who could it possibly be? Fortunately, Phil's door featured a peephole, so you could see who was bothering you without having to open the door. However, when you looked through, you saw... nothing.

Chapter 6 - Disquiet minds.
“I’m going to set off now.” The man wearing a black hooded figure took her in his. His hands were affectionate, holding hers as if they were made of glass.
Faye didn’t need another moment to know who this man was. Her eyes widened; her chest tightened.
Jake! Don’t go! The FBI will show up!
No matter how hard she tried moving her mouth, she failed. Soon, her lips moved on their own accord, “You don’t have to do this… I can still go.”
“I told you, I cannot allow you to put yourself in danger.”
Richy is our culprit! Please, Jake! Richy won’t harm me! You’re in worse danger!
Tears escaped her eyes, unable to convey her words to him. Again, Faye spoke, raising her voice as she did. “But I have to allow you to do so? Why don’t the same rules apply for the both of us?”
It was then.
Faye realized. This conversation occurred before Jake left for the Iron-splinter mine instead of her.
It was useless. This isn’t the reality. Yet, Faye looked at his face attentively. She had to see his face. At least for a split second, Faye wanted to lock eyes with his. This could be their first and last meeting.
But she couldn’t.
No matter how hard she looked, his face was blurred.
“Because I have made the decision to protect you.” He declared. Gently taking her hands to his lips. The warm lips touched her skin, spreading warmth to her heart.
“At any cost.”
Don’t! Jake!
Please don’t go!
Extending a hand, Faye ran towards the distancing hooded figure. She screamed his name.
Jake!
Yet he didn’t seem to notice her voice at all. Faye ran harder.
However, he was always faster.
Always…
Faye stopped for a second to catch her breath. Suddenly, a gunshot ran through her ears. Faye looked up; her tired eyes widened.
She was at the Iron-splinter mine.
Jake’s lifeless body fell before her feet.
Faye gasped for air. She felt as if she was being choked. Clutching her neck with both hands, Faye ran to get the pills out of her handbag. Tripping over her legs several times, she finally succeeded. Roughly shoving the pills into her mouth, Faye gulped down the water, spilling almost half of it.
Minutes later, which felt like years, Faye could finally breathe.
Faye calmly raised herself to her feet. Her body was damp in a cold sweat. Sighing, Faye walked to the bathroom.
***
Sleep and Kyle did not seem to know each other these days. He finally stood up after spending who knows how long just lying on the bed.
5:40 a.m.
Exhaling aloud, Kyle rubbed his tired eyes. After gulping down a glass of water, he sat down again. Soon, Kyle was lost in thoughts.
Jake…
Three years ago, when they finally got a hold of him, Jake escaped yet again. But they succeeded in finding his weakness.
The mysterious woman who worked together with Jake.
They found this through a public video uploaded by Lily Donfort. The first speculation was that they were partners or she was his underling.
This was soon proved wrong as Faye Evans had no initial connection to Jake. By the time they moved to investigate Faye, the incident at the Iron-splinter mine had already happened. Unfortunately, they were too late.
They should’ve targeted Faye Evans from the beginning.
Soon, Jake cut off his every relation with everyone in Duskwood as well as with Faye. With such circumstances, they lost the chance to seize him once again.
The relationship between Faye and Jake could not be cleared as well.
However, there was one thing out of the ordinary. Jake protected Faye’s phone for the past three years. Like a maniac.
Thus, their focus turned towards Faye once again. By collecting information through the phones of those around her, they could find their relationship.
Lovers.
Jake? Love?
Honestly, those two words didn’t go together. The Jake Kyle knew was nothing of that sort. He was not in a position to object anyway. Kyle was almost forced for this task.
Impersonating Jake.
Kyle was chosen for the job for two reasons, the similarities in their overall appearances, and their relationship. Jake and Kyle were close friends once. That was before Jake betrayed them and turned his back. That was almost seven years ago.
Recently, many foreign governments seemed to show a surge of interest in Jake. This raised the urgency to seize him as soon as possible.
Honestly, dragging an ordinary citizen to this matter was their last resort.
It’s too late to worry now anyway.
Either way, Faye Evans was an interesting person. Her dark emerald eyes seemed to have an immense depth. She held a tragic past from her parents' death, grew up in an orphanage, and managed to get accepted to a prestige university and even a decent job. The only thing that connected her to Jake was Duskwood. But other than that, there was nothing out of the ordinary in her life.
That means Jake is connected to Duskwood… Somehow.
But how?
The only one he could gain those answers from was Faye. If only he could get a hold of her phone, he could gain all the answers he needed.
She didn’t let go of her phone for a second.
A vibrating noise jerked him back to reality. Kyle dragged himself to unlock the phone.
-Faye Evans is at Duskwood.
Duskwood? At this time?
-To be Continued.

I've been busy for the past few days so writing and editing has been slow. Please enjoy a longer chapter to make up for it.
Also I decided now to clearly state that Duskwood is in Germany... (while using the US parole system as headcannon cause I can't be bothered researching the German system...) This is why you shouldn't start fanfics before an episode release! 🤣 Maybe one day I'll feel motivated enough to fix up the inconsistencies throughout the series.
Unrecognisable Part 22
The sound of bird morning calls woke me up. Initially I thought I had left a window open as they were so loud. Then I saw my surroundings and remembered where I was. I was still lying on top of Jake in an old barn that had miraculously not fallen down on us through the night.
“Good morning,” Jake kissed my head.
I squinted at him, “Oh God, what time is it?”
He was doing something on his phone, but I couldn’t make it out. He swiped to check the time, “Almost 6.”
“Mmm, I can’t believe I actually fell asleep,” I nuzzled my face against him to block out the light. “You should’ve woken me up.”
“No, it was fine. You needed the rest,” he rubbed light circles on my head with his fingertips.
“What are you doing?” I tried to work out what was on his phone screen.
“Playing Candy Crush,” he answered nonchalantly.
“Wait, what? Seriously?” I lifted my head up. “You’re wasting your phone battery on Candy Crush?”
“Well, no, this is your phone,” he admitted.
“Hey! Give me that!” I grabbed the phone from his hands and sat up.
“I was bored!” he defended. “Bored and trapped!”
“You could have pushed me off and gotten up!” I shook my head as I closed the app.
“You were too cute,” he smirked.
“Here I thought you were doing something sensible like working out how the hell to get out of here and… shit! We’ve got like 10 hours to get to Colville!” I exclaimed.
“We only need four,” Jake assured. “And yes, I’ve already checked our location.”
“We still need to get out of here,” I looked around the barn, then back at Jake. “How are you feeling?”
He sighed and lifted himself to a sitting position slowly, wincing as he moved his limbs, “I’ll live.”
“That’s as reassuring as ever,” I rolled my eyes.
“And you?” he gestured to my lower back.
“Sore,” I touched it gingerly. “But I'll live.”
“Think you can ride the bike again?” he questioned.
“Hang on, it’s you we should be worried about!” I argued. “You really think you can get back on?”
“I have endured far worse,” he pointed out. “I'll go slower this time.”
“You most definitely will!” I glared at him.
He tried to keep a straight face, but started laughing, “You saw me kill seven people yesterday and yet you don’t hesitate to threaten me. It’s cute, endearing even.”
“I'm not scared of you,” I shrugged. “Especially in your current condition, I could out run you.”
“Maybe I let you believe you could out run me,” he smirked. “Who doesn’t love a good chase?”
“You can’t fool me,” I got up and stretched my back. “I know you’re in a lot of pain.”
“But I know how to shut out pain to get what I want,” he grinned devilishly.
I poked his shoulder and he yelped in pain, “Real scary, monster boy.”
Jake grabbed my wrist with a growl and yanked me down to the ground beside him. I hit the hay on my side, then was immediately forced onto my back. Jake pinned my limbs down with his before I could react. I tried to move my arms, but he held them down firmly.
“That hurt, you son of a bitch!” I yelled.
“Remember who you’re dealing with,” he hissed. “I got myself out of those mines, I can ride that fucking bike.”
“Give me the other Jake back,” I frowned.
“No, he’s weak,” his expression grew darker. “If it wasn't for me, he would’ve died in those mines.”
“We’re not in danger, give him back,” I insisted.
“Maybe I don’t want to,” he leant over and licked my cheek. “Maybe he doesn’t want to, either.”
“We don’t have time for this,” I struggled to remain calm. “Fine, you can handle the bike. Point proven.”
“Do you think anyone would hear you if you screamed right now?” he smiled sadistically. “There’s no one for miles! You could scream all you want and no one would hear you.”
“Are you done?” I raised my eyebrow. “We have to get to Colville, remember?”
“But look,” Jake gestured to the side with his head. “You'd look so beautiful tied to the wooden beam there. I could’ve done it while you slept, you know. You wouldn’t have even noticed.”
“What, do you want a cookie for being a good boy?” I rolled my eyes.
“I don’t think you understand how much I have to restrain myself with you,” he turned back to me. “You act so strong and brave, but you're oh so vulnerable. It’d be a pity if I were to abuse that.”
“Stop,” I bit my lip.
“Stop,” he mocked. “Make me.”
Jake leant down and started alternating between kissing and sucking my neck. I wiggled underneath him, but I couldn’t escape his hold.
“Red light, Jake,” I shook my head. “We need to go.”
Jake immediately pulled up and pouted, “Mood killer.”
“Save it for after we get Richy denied parole!” I poked his stomach. “Think of it as motivation.”
Jake laughed and stood up to stretch out, “I didn’t need any, but I'll take it. On a more serious note, we need to work on your self-defence because that was pathetic.”
I got up and dusted myself off, “Gee, thanks. How about you teach me a few things then?”
“Gladly,” he smiled as he picked up his helmet. “When I'm not so sore. For now, let’s go find something to eat and maybe pick up a new ride on the way.”
“Sounds like a plan,” I chuckled as I bent over to grab my helmet to put it on. “You have a place in mind already?”
“Yes, there’s a rest stop with a diner not far from here, which meets both requisites,” he explained as he put his gloves on.
I lifted our bag off the ground and slung it over my shoulder while put his backpack on. He grabbed the dirt bike and pushed it across the barn. I held the door open to give him extra clearance while he exited. Before joining Jake on the dirt bike, I took one last look at the old barn that had sheltered us.
Jake rode considerably more slowly and carefully across the empty fields until we finally reached the road 30 minutes later. The one lane road was empty and weaved through densely forested areas. On a normal day I'd appreciate the clean, fresh air. However, that day was anything but normal.
Eventually the road merged with a busier two-lane highway. Not even five minutes later, the bike started to sputter. Jake pulled off immediately to the side.
“That's as far as the tank can take us,” he sighed as we got off. “Help me move it into the bushes.”
With one of us on each side, we pushed the bike through the trees into the middle of dense bushes and dumped our helmets with it. Jake grabbed some fallen tree branches and tossed them on top to cover everything a little more.
“The diner shouldn't be much further,” he assured me as we took off on foot again.
Truck after truck sped past us as we walked down the shoulder of the highway. Thankfully, Jake was right, the diner was just around the bend, but given the last day of travelling, I was already feeling rather worn out.
Navigating through the parking lot of the diner, Jake scoped out potential new rides. Most of them were trucks of all sizes, some with trailers and some without. There were only a couple of cars, which meant his choices were limited. Breakfast first though, then car theft.
Being the gentleman he was, Jake opened the door of the diner for me to enter first. The inside was like a normal trucker's diner with a long bar space for individuals and a few booths for the occasional group when they had them. Beside the kitchen window a TV was mounted to the wall airing the morning news.
The bar itself was full of truck drivers shovelling breakfast into their mouths in silence with one lone middle-aged waitress refilling their coffee mugs. She looked at me and said something in German to us. I barely knew any German, but by the tone of her voice I could tell it wasn't a greeting.
“I have no idea what she said,” I commented quietly to Jake.
“She said we look like shit,” Jake put a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
He responded to the woman in German. It was the first time I heard him speak his native language and although I had no idea what he was saying, I felt like I understood him just by watching him. They spoke back and forth a few times until Jake responded with one of the few words I knew, “Danke.”
“I told her that our car had broken down and we've been walking all night to find reception,” he explained. “She said the bathrooms are at the back, if you want to freshen up.”
“That sounds good,” I smiled at the woman. “Danke.”
The waitress kept her eyes on us as we headed to the back. Even the truckers started giving us sideways glances. I wasn't sure if it was because they don't get many tourists or if they had somehow recognised us, but Jake was calm and collected so I tried to mirror him.
There was a single stall each for men and women so we went our separate ways. Washing my hands after using the toilet, I eyed myself in the mirror. The woman was right, I did look like shit. I only had a few hours sleep in the barn after all. I washed my face as best as I could, then applied some basic make-up up to try to resemble a human being again. It wasn't the best transition, but it'd have to do.
After I finished up, I surprised to find Jake wasn't waiting outside the bathroom. Stepping out, I spotted him sitting at the closest booth facing the front door. He was busy reading the menu, or at least trying to pretend he was. One of the more hardened trucker’s was watching him from the bar. Surely Jake had noticed, right? He just determined the driver wasn't a threat, right? I rejoined Jake at the table and tried my hardest to not look back at the driver.
“Anything good?” I asked picking up my menu.
“Just your standard range of breakfast food,” he shrugged.
“I, uh, can't read any of this,” I admitted once I realised it was just a laminated text printout with no pictures, all in German.
“What do you want? I'll order for you,” he offered.
“Eggs, bacon, toast... the works really,” I sighed. “I feel hungover without the alcohol. Where's the fun in that?”
Jake lowered his menu and smirked smugly at me, “I'm glad you're starting to appreciate the necessity of food and eating well when you can.”
“I'd rather not think about it right now,” I shook my head. “Is it just me or are they staring at us?”
“Oh, they’re staring. Truckers don't really care for civilians invading their hangouts. It's like we're interrupting their secret club meeting,” he answered nonchalantly.
The waitress came over to take our orders. Jake ordered for us in German. There was something about the way that he spoke the language that had me entranced. Even though he was just literally ordering breakfast, I was hanging onto his every word.
“Is my Deutsch making you that flustered?” he laughed.
“Um, the language just sounds better from your lips,” I blushed.
“Ich liebe dich,” he smiled.
“I have no idea what that means,” I looked at him confused.
“Guess,” he teased.
I stared at him and tried to read from his expression and the context the meaning of what he said to me. “You think I'm cute?”
He chuckled, “No, I definitely think you're cute, but I said ‘I love you'.”
“Oh! I love you too!” I felt so bad for not getting it. “I am glad though that you remembered to say it outside of a life threatening situation.”
“See? I'm trying,” he joked.
“Oh my God! It just occurred to me that the hearing is going to be in German! What am I going to do!?” I gasped. “It’s not like you can go with me!”
“While I'm sure the board can understand English, your friends will be there and they could translate for you?” he suggested.
“Oh, of course,” I rolled my eyes at my own stupidity. “What am I even going to say?”
“The truth? That he betrayed and used you to bring a legend to life in order to terrorise you and your friends just because he couldn't face his own guilt. That he used his good nature to deceive all of you, so even now, any good behaviour should not be trusted. It is just a show to get early release. He doesn't actually feel remorse,” Jake suggested.
“Yeah, I guess,” I sighed.
“You'll work it out,” he put his hand over mine assuredly.
A special news bulletin suddenly interrupted the morning news. I couldn’t understand what was being said, but it was very clear to me that they were issuing a warning to the public that dangerous fugitives had crossed the border and they were to be on the lookout for us. To my surprise, they were still using the old photo of me and the police sketch of Jake. They showed some of the CCTV footage of the train, but the quality was so poor that you really couldn't make out our faces. Nevertheless, I turned back towards Jake and sunk into the seat, hoping that no one in the diner would put two and two together. Jake squeezed my hand to get my attention. Glancing up at him, he held himself with confidence and strength, but his eyes were piercing, as if he was telling me to get my shit together. He was right of course. Every time I panicked I risked us being exposed. I took a deep breath and tried to relax. Out of nowhere our waitress plopped down our dishes, catching me by surprise and nearly causing me to jump out of my seat. She looked at me oddly, like I had three heads, then said something in German. Jake responded in German, obviously trying to cover for my skittish reaction.
“You need to get a better handle on this,” he whispered while frowning at me. “If you keep acting guilty, people are going to know you’re guilty and that will expose us both.”
“But I'm not even guilty,” I whined. “Well not until yesterday.”
Jake sighed and said nothing. He just ate his breakfast while avoiding eye contact with me.
“What? You’re meant to say something snarky or whatever,” I pressured.
“It’s nothing,” he lied. I kicked his leg under the table. “Ow! What the fuck was that for?”
“I am a woman. It is never nothing so spill,” I glared.
“Just wondering if I should’ve just killed you,” he mumbled.
“What for?” I narrowed my eyes.
“Maybe asking you to handle this is too much for you,” he grumbled. I kicked him again. “Ow! I am definitely going to kill you if you keep kicking me!”
“I can handle it,” I gritted my teeth, then started eating
“Good,” he went back to eating.
I glanced up from my plate and realised I needed to cut the tension between us, “Any thoughts on a ride?”
“Well I always wanted to drive a semi,” he mused.
“You’re not serious,” I laughed.
“How hard could it be?” he shrugged.
“Uh, very?” I shook my head. “Besides, I don’t think we should be crossing any of these guys.”
“I could take them,” he insisted. “But you’re right, their cabs are probably vile cesspits.”
“So a normal sedan?” I proposed.
“Unless you want to walk all the way to Colville,” he said sarcastically, earning him another kick. “You’re really asking to be punished later.”
I stuck my tongue out at him like a true brat and kicked him under the table again.

"Sometimes, it's surprising how you were able to talk to these people and get what you want," Jessy suddenly commented, pulling your attention away from your phone.
After sharing the details of your conversation with Alan in the group chat, Thomas finally calmed down and is now contently back in his position on the ground floor. You haven't heard anything from Jake after that call, and you assume he already knows word by word what transpired in the call. All you have to do now is wait, and that's what you are doing right now. You went back upstairs with Jessy while waiting for an update.
"What do you mean?" You asked with a puzzled look.
"Well, you know how my brother is with everyone, and you were able to talk to him without pissing him off. Then, you were able to talk Thomas out from leaving the cabin. And now, you were able to persuade Alan, the Duskwood Chief Police to go to Grimrock." she said, looking impressed.
"Maybe it's my charm?" you grinned, wiggling your eyebrows in a poor attempt to seduce her.
"Is that what you used to me?" she let out a soft laugh at your antics.
"Hmm," you pretend to think. "Is it working?" Just as she was about to reply, your phone rang, and your expression shifted dramatically. Back to business, it seemed. "That was fast."
"Is it Alan?" she inquired.
"Yeah. Excuse me, I'll take this call outside." You stepped out of the room, closing the door behind you to ensure privacy. "Hello."
"I'm here now. Well, I'm at the end of the road. I'm going to have to go the rest of the way on foot." Alan's voice sounded on the other end, confirming his current location. Of course, he wouldn't have arrived already. You recalled that reaching Grimrock required some walking.
"How far is it to the Grimrock?"
"About 800 meters. Maybe half a mile," he replied. You could hear the subtle sounds of his movements. You can hear him going out of his police car, and then not for long the sound of his boots hitting dried leaves was heard. You knew he was on the right track. The familiar sounds of the night surrounded him—the chirping of crickets, the hooting of owls—the audio matching the environment.
"Well, why are you already messaging me?" you asked impatiently, not really caring that you're talking to a police, and a chief police no less. Alan doesn't seem to mind anyway. "To make sure I haven't gone anywhere?"
"Not necessarily, no. I just thought the two of us could have a little chat In the meantime," he responded after a brief pause. "Now that you're no longer hiding from me."
You raised an eyebrow at that. It wasn't exactly unexpected, but you knew that a casual chat could easily turn into something more. At the same time, this could be a chance to gather more information, especially about Hanson since Alan was the one who interrogated him all those years ago.
"I suppose it depends on the topics," you replied cautiously. It was a measured response, giving the impression that you might be open to answering his questions while subtly planning to steer the conversation to your advantage.
"Maybe you'd like to tell me how you got involved in all of this." A straight-to-the-point question, you see. You guess that's the number one question everyone has in their minds including Jake. "You're not from Duskwood, are you?"
"No idea," you shrugged. "As you can see, I have no idea who these people are until I got involved in this case— which until now, remained mysterious for everyone else. All I want right now is to find Hannah and keep my friends safe at all costs."
"Then why did you avoid me so persistently?"
"I think you already know the answer to that," you retorted. "I'm well aware that as of now, I'm one of your primary suspects in Hannah's case."
"You do realize that only made things worse for you, don't you?"
"To be frank, I couldn't care less. I know I'm innocent. And I can't continue this investigation if I'm gonna be put behind bars for a crime I never did."
"Nonsense, we just need your statements that's all. We can't put you to prison without valid evidence."
"I could have believed that if you hadn't arrested Phil Hawkins." Sarcasm was heavily noted in your voice.
"He was arrested for an entirely different reason."
"I think I know but we can discuss that further in the precinct." Regardless of Phil being an ass to Jessy, you still want to get him out of there. Somehow, you think you have an idea how he got involved in this. He wasn't arrested because of a different reason, he's obviously connected to Jennifer Hanson's case. But not in a way that some people expected him to be involved, that's something you have to gather evidence at but you can only do that after you solve Hannah's case. "Anyway, as of now, you haven't really given me an impression that you can handle this case."
"Excuse me?" His voice was tinged with offense. "If you didn't trust us to handle the case why did you call us concerning Hanson's house? I know that you and your friends are behind that anonymous call."
"Correct, that was us." You answered. From where this is going, you already knew they didn't find anything from that house. "Because we already found the culprit, it's your job now to capture him. Yet, I guess you weren't fast enough."
"Is that so? And what did you think we would find there?" He asked in a tone that completely says his unimpressed. "I'm very much happy I only sent one of my men to investigate."
"Let me guess, the house is empty," you responded, matching his tone.
"Of course it was."
"I have pictures as proof." You began to send them to him, providing evidence to back up your claims. The images depicted a blanket with ropes, presumably where Hannah had been restrained, barrels containing a toxic chemical, and a desk cluttered with pictures of your friends, various documents, the raven symbol, and other items that seemed to be part of Hanson's personal investigation.
"This doesn't really prove anything," he said, unamused. "I have to work hard for my current position. And I've always been very passionate about my job. Duskwood has always been my number one priority. Only for me to slowly but surely become the joke of the town. Can you imagine the kind of things the mayor has been saying about me about the poison at the Grimrock?"
You couldn't help but let a small grin form. It seemed you had struck a nerve.
"You're making it sound like this is my fault," you scoffed. "I've done my research. You've only blocked off the Grimrock instead of looking for the culprit. The same way you're just pointing fingers out to anyone that seemed suspicious instead of actually investigating."
"Do you really think it's that easy?"
That sounded like a rhetorical question and you would have probably said yes either way if it's not. Actually, this case would have probably been a walk in the park if the police here were competent enough, however, for you guys, none of it could have been easy. You and Jake have to hack your way into things to get information which is highly unethical and illegal which is why he's wanted in the first place, the others have to break into someone's house and basement just to gather information but the police? They literally have the right to investigate, they could poke into things and no one will bat an eye and yet they do nothing. And they even have the audacity to be dramatic when a group of friends started to do the investigation on their own saying they are literally mocking them.
"I really have quite a few questions I'd like to ask you, you can believe me," he says suddenly. "Let's assume I actually find Miss Donfort at the location described by you. Then you will have the knowledge only the culprit could have possessed. What, then, should keep me from issuing a warrant for your arrest?"
You already expected him to say this, the others, too. That's why they were so against your plan. But you wouldn't really do this if you haven't got plans ahead for this conversation. It looks like Alan has got you where he wanted you but in fact, it's the other way around.
"Why don't you find Hannah first before saying that to me? As promised, I'll stop by your precinct. Once you met me, then you can decide if you can really issue a warrant of arrest against me."
"How am I supposed to trust you to keep your promise? The video of Miss Lilly Donfort releasing any information about you isn't as vital as we thought. You have no social media connected to your number, we only know you as Y/n. Your last name remains unknown. No one knows your face," you scoffed at that. The others, except Lilly, have seen your face even before Lilly uploaded the video. You just avoided being seen by Lilly during that time as you had the feeling she'd do something as reckless as that. "You're practically still a stranger to us. If you are the culprit, it would be easier for you to run away after all this."
"Look," you said with growing impatience, "if I were the culprit, why the hell would I be telling you where Hannah is? From all the investigations we have, this Grimrock is what where it led to. As obviously, this is now a job for the police, we called one."
He sighed, "this is crazy. Yet, I find myself stumbling through the forest, following your orders."
Seemingly, as he's following your orders already, according to him, you decided to use that. "Tell me something about yourself."
"About myself?" He seemed genuinely surprised. "Why?"
"This is a little chit-chat, right? It wouldn't be a chat if I was the only one being questioned."
"Very well," he hummed. "If you're interested, my family originally came from Grove springs. I went to college there and underwent my training. One day, on the way to work, I met this gorgeous woman in the subway," you raised an eyebrow at that. Not expecting him to tell you about his love life. "Before I knew it, I married her, pulled up my stakes and got myself transferred to Duskwood. A year later, we got divorced. She took both my dogs, half of what few savings I had and I never see her again. But I stayed here, in the sleepiest, strangest place in the world."
"Sorry to hear that," you say. Especially about the dogs but you decided not to say that aloud. That must have been more tragic than being divorced by your wife.
"It's all ancient history now. Anyway," he went on, "have you ever been to Duskwood?"
"Not yet," you answered. It would not have been wise to say you are here right now.
"Then you don't really know what I mean by 'strange'."
"Believe me, I know." You haven't been here for a day and you already feel the strangeness. But it wasn't unpleasant. "Once you've finally made Duskwood a safe place, maybe I'll come and visit."
There's a moment of silence, making you wonder why he hasn't mentioned anything about Hanson. He was the one who handled Jennifer's case before, and he probably knew there was a connection between her and Hannah's case.
"Let's talk about Michael Hanson," you announce, shifting the focus back to the matter at hand.
"It took longer for the topic to come up than I had anticipated," he mused.
You rolled your eyes even though he's not actually seeing it. "You know he's one of the main suspects in this whole thing, right?"
"Listen, I'm going to have to disappoint you." he paused for dramatic effect, "The reason why I find your findings impossible is because Michael is dead."
You almost dropped your phone. What the hell?
Out of all the information you expected to get from him, this one is at the bottom of your list. It did cross your mind a few times because you did suspect that Hanson being the culprit is too easy – like he's being framed. But at the moment, all of your evidence leads right to him. If he's dead, then you're back to square one. Fuck.
"Are you still there?"
"You're kidding, right?" you inhaled sharply.
"It's like I said."
"At some point I did consider the possibility of him to be dead, to be honest. But," you let out a harsh breath, " it still threw me off a bit. He's the only lead we got. How did he die?"
"Counterquestion," he avoided your question. "Why did you contact Iris Hanson?"
"Because I was hoping for information." You replied almost irritated.
"And did you get what you were hoping for?"
"Somehow."
"Life broke Michael apart, Y/n," he told you. "Do you know what that means? Is that something they say where you're from?"
A thought passed through your mind, something you've been trying to repress for so long. It's been a year since that incident happened, and you can barely do your job the way you used to. Life broke you beyond what you expected.
You shook your head, not wanting to dwell on that thought for more than a few seconds. You only managed to reply with a single, barely audible "yes."
Fortunately, Alan didn't seem to notice the slight vulnerability you had shown. "Michael disappeared back then. One night, he closed his bar, went home, and was never seen again. Some 'witnesses' claim they saw him going into the forest. But well—"
"Did he fall victim to some sort of crime?" you inquired.
"No, because there was a testament," he said. "Michael's old employee found it."
"Phil..." You found yourself muttering.
"Yes, Phil Hawkins." He affirmed. "Michael had hired him shortly after Jennifer's death. Michael once said to me that none of this would have happened, had he only employed the boy earlier."
"Because then, Michael could have left the Aurora to pick up Jennifer." You continued.
He hummed in approval. "Mister Hawkins claimed that it had been his job to open the Aurora that day, which is when he found the testament. Apparently, it had been lying on the counter."
"'Apparently'?" You repeated, that sounded weird. You can't just find it randomly place there. "As if it had been placed there for him."
"Please don't interpret anything into that. I only said that because his statement is the only thing we have to prove it." You want to object because it seemed they are still tight-lipped on why the hell they arrested Phil. "And that's when the trouble started. You were the person Mister Hawkins called from prison, isn't that correct?"
You were right. They monitored who Phil called that day, and there's no way you can deny that. "Yes, that's correct."
"What did you talk about?"
"He talked about his suspicions concerning his arrest."
"You can trust me, Y/n." Trust is a word you find hard to give anyone. And right now, you cannot afford to give that away. "And I'm in no way interested in hurting you whatsoever."
"We'll have to see that, Alan," is all you could say.
"Anyway, the days passed and we were unable to find Michael or his corpse. And it actually seemed like the forest had swallowed him alive." He continued. "All the while the rumours in Duskwood get louder. Phil apparently knew beforehand that he was named as a beneficiary in the testament."
"So, you're saying that Phil could have killed Michael?" you asked in disbelief. Your eyes wandered to Jessy's door, hoping she wasn't overhearing any of your conversations. You had to confirm if Phil was innocent or not, for her sake and his own. "That's impossible."
"That's why I said it was rumored," he emphasized. "But the circumstances certainly helped fuel those suspicions quite rapidly. Anyway, you can't just pronounce someone dead. Not if there's no corpse."
"Which was necessary for the testament," you said, finally getting it. He had been giving you leading questions for a while now as if you wouldn't notice. It was your turn now. "So, you helped out. You wanted to help your old friend Michael, didn't you, Alan? To apologize for never being able to find Jennifer's killer."
"I..." he hesitated. "Let's talk about the hacker in your group."
You expected as much but that doesn't stop you from going into protective mode. "No, absolutely not."
Ignoring your objection, he continued. "I've made some inquiries. But there's one thing that doesn't quite add up. How did he get involved in all of this?"
You chuckled dryly, "Haha, like I'd tell you."
"I can assure you, his case in no way part of my range of duties. It's just," he paused. "The connection of someone like him to this small case in the even smaller town of Duskwood... it just piques my interest that's all."
"Respectfully, Mister Bloomgate," you prompted. You resorted back to formalities in the hopes he'll drop the subject. "I shall let your interest be piqued as I am in no place to tell you the hacker's motives. All I can tell you is that he's helping us solve the case."
"You're really quite interesting, Y/n. I've expected you to be a little bit fearful for us police, not that you have to, mind you. It's just a normal response when police started to contact you first. That's why I do not get why would someone like you be involved with the likes of him?"
"I guess trouble goes with trouble, too," was your only reply. "I know all I need to know now."
"I hope for your sake that is the truth." He said. "I've told you all I can about Michael. Are you happy now?"
"Happy is not the right term." You said. It seemed like when you're getting closer to the truth, the more complicated it gets.
"He was a good man, you know."
"Until he tragically lost his daughter," you finished for him. "And what if," you began to consider a new possibility, "what if Michael is still out there, wandering the woods to this day? There was no body after all."
He was quick to reject the idea. "Nonsense."
"Are you saying that as Michael's friend or as Duskwood police chief?"
"The latter," he replied. "We're not talking about a couple of days here, we're talking about years! Nobody could hide in the forest for such a long time without being noticed. And completely unprepared at that. Let's just leave this topic behind us. You're giving me a headache."
"Well then," you say. Now you know the reason why they weren't able to find Jennifer's killer nor find Hannah. They immediately shut down ideas that seemed impossible without actually investigating them. "What did Hannah want from you when she called you?"
"How do you know about that?"
"She called you the same day she disappeared." You answered your own question. "She wanted to make a statement, didn't she?"
"I think I know how'd you knew that, and I'm not sure whether I should be angry or impressed."
"That's entirely up to you."
You could almost hear his frustrated sigh on the other end of the line. "Alright. According to Miss Donfort, there was a man who had been following her for some time."
So, she did make a statement. "Did this man wear a mask by any chance?" you questioned. Because if he were—
"She didn't really tell me anything. But she asked me a strange question."
"What did she ask?"
"If she brought me a receipt, and I mean a regular receipt, you'd get at a check-out. Would I be able to find the buyer who received this receipt?"
"So, Hannah had something up her sleeve against her pursuer?" you questioned. "Did you ever get to see this receipt?"
"I've really told you enough," he told you and you rolled your eyes for the nth time since you two talked. "Besides, we have to end our conversation. I have reached the waterfall."
You want to tell that all he did is tell you information that you already know but when it comes to the one you need answer the most he deflects it like the plague. But since he's there already maybe you'll have to question him some other time. "What do you see?"
"I'm going to need some time to look around here. After all, you didn't give me a precise location. And it's not exactly made easier by it being so dark."
"Fine." You say. "Please tell me once you are through."

Helloooooo, so I'm currently at episode 6, but I really want to know what's going on!! Because I read something about a new chapter? Chapter 11? And also something about a new game, but people don't know what's it going to be about, but knowing the end of chapter 10 (I read a spoiler) it can't end like that, right?? RIGHT??? LIKE I WOULD DIEEEE. So yeap, hope you can answer my questions <3
No more new chapters after 10 I’m afraid. Buuut there might possibly be some more Duskwood stuff in the new game they are making where old characters might return! 😁 So everyone is excited for that possibility, and we might get more answers in the next game too.
I’m sorry you got spoiled for the ending 😔 I always want to kick myself when I read something I wasn’t supposed to yet.
