The Monk That Shook the World
In a sermon in 1883, Charles Spurgeon said, “four hundred years ago, there came into this wicked world the son of a miner, or refiner of metals, who was to do no little towards undermining the Papacy and refining the church. The name of that babe was Martin Luther: a hero and a saint. Blessed was that day above all the days of the century, which it honored, for it bestowed a blessing on all succeeding ages, through ‘the monk that shook the world.’ His brave spirit overturned the tyranny of error, which had so long held nations in bondage. All human history since then has been more or less affected by the birth of that marvelous boy.”
This son of a miner was born November 11, 1483 in the German town, Eisleben. Martin Luther was from a humble background, "I am a peasant’s son,” Luther said. “My father, grandfather, all my ancestors were genuine peasants.” He was the first born of eight children.
Martin was highly intelligent and was going to be the shining star of his family through academics. At 14, young Martin was sent to the school of the Brethren of the Common Life for a year. Considered one of the forerunners of the Reformation, you have to wonder about their influence on the young Martin; very little is said about it.
A year later, he went to school in Eisenach and lived with relatives. Because he was not of a privileged class, Luther sang for bread and begged for money to help pay for living expenses. (A common practice for students at that time. Jon Hus did the same a century before Luther).
Luther later said, “Do not despise the boys who beg from door to door, saying, ‘A little bread for the love of God’; and when groups of poor people sing before your house, think that you hear great princes and lords. I myself have been such a beggar pupil, and have sung for bread before houses, especially in the dear town of Eisenach….for a time I was a 'poverty student,' and I have risen by the pen to a position which I would not exchange for that of the Sultan of Turkey, taking his wealth and giving up my learning.”
A humble beginning for someone who would become such an influential person!
Historian Phillip Schaff writes: “All the Reformers, like the Apostles and Evangelists, were men of humble origin, and gave proof that God’s Spirit working through his chosen instruments is mightier than armies and navies. But they were endowed with extraordinary talents and energy, and providentially prepared for their work.”
Young Martin was a gifted singer and lute player. One woman, named Ursula Cotta, saw him singing in church and took pity on him; she took him in her home and took care of him for the rest of his time in Eisenach.
Martin went to the university at age 18 to study to be a lawyer and, by all accounts, he was on his way to becoming a great one. Luther quickly earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. He was very talented and became a great debater at the university. He had become so good at public debate that the students started calling him "The Philosopher."
Music, poetry and theology were his interests in school, but his father steered him towards law. Luther was the pension plan for his mother and father, Hans and Margaret. He was their ticket to a comfortable life. Hans wanted Martin to continue his studies in law, and Martin was on the path to certain success.
At age 21, young Martin was on his way back to school from a home visit when he got caught in the middle of a violent thunderstorm. Luther was thrown from his horse as a bolt of lightning struck nearby. He was terrified, and he swore to St. Anne that if he lived, he would become a monk. And, of course, he lived. Being a man of his word, two weeks later Martin joined a monastery, to the bewilderment of his father.
Luther joined an Augustinian monastery in 1505. Young Martin strived to be a great monk—but above all he wanted to be right with God. In those days it was thought that there was no surer way to be right with God than to give up all, be a priest, monk or nun, and live a life of poverty and suffering. In the monastery, Luther tried to be as perfect as he could be by obeying all the rules and living as pure a life as he could. “If ever a monk got to heaven by his monkery, it was I," Luther later wrote.
But the more Martin tried, the more condemned he felt. He was bewildered. He just couldn’t be good enough for God as much as he tried, and he tried harder than anyone! If Martin thought he could achieve peace with God, and attain holiness and righteousness through being a monk, he was sadly mistaken.
“I crucified Christ daily in my cloistered life, and blasphemed God by my wrong faith. Outwardly I kept myself chaste, poor, and obedient. I was much given to fasting, watching, praying, saying of masses, and the like. Yet under the cloak of my outward respectability I continually mistrusted, doubted, feared, hated, and blasphemed God. My righteousness was a filthy puddle. Satan loves such saints. They are his darlings, for they quickly destroy their body and soul by depriving them of the blessings of God’s generous gifts.”
Then as Luther was studying the Scriptures—something snapped—something revolutionized his life and, as a result, the whole world. Usually when he would read Romans 1:17, “The righteous (just) shall live by faith,” he had been drawn not to the word “faith” but to the word “righteous,” It terrified him.
Luther remarked, "I hated that word, 'the righteousness of God,' by which I had been taught according to the custom and use of all teachers…[that] God is righteous and punishes the unrighteous sinner." Only the righteous could have faith and the young Luther could not live by faith because he knew he was not righteous. Luther was bewildered.
But unlike the lightning bolt that missed him that led him to the monastery in the first place, this one hit him. He started to see the passage differently. "At last,” he said, “meditating day and night, by the mercy of God, I…began to understand that the righteousness of God is that through which the righteous live by a gift of God, namely by faith…. Here I felt as if I were entirely born again and had entered paradise itself through the gates that had been flung open."
Justification--the righteousness of God--is by faith! Not just being forgiven-–that is a part of it--but given the righteousness of God by faith. It's a gift, not an achievement. Martin found the gentle yoke of Christ and was free!
"This one and firm rock, which we call the doctrine of justification," says Luther, "is the chief article of the whole Christian doctrine, which comprehends the understanding of all godliness."
This truth was the beginning of a tidal wave that was out of Luther's control. It never was in his thoughts or desires to start a revolution. But in God's providence-- a combination of technological advances, philosophical shifts, Middle Age fears and frustrations, superstitious religious practices and general angst against the Church of the day thrust Martin Luther to the forefront of the movement that sparked the Reformation and moved the world from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age.

Esta película basada en mostrar la vida de Martin luther, (cuya biografía ya se las deje brevemente en la imagen) y del contexto histórico en el que se encuentra, rompiendo esquemas religiosos, aunque luego sus pensamientos se masificarían y afectarían también a áreas sociales y económicas.

Martin Lutero, nace en Eisleben (Alemania) en 1483. Luego de terminar sus estudios básicos y secundarios, entra a estudiar leyes (El sueño de su padre), sin embargo este abandona la carrera por una experiencia “religiosa”, en la cual su vida corre riesgo y este promete convertirse en monje si con ello salva su vida, (Todos siempre cuándo estuvimos a punto de perder la vida reflexionamos sobre nuestra fé y devoción).
Lutero da un cambio en su vida y entra al monasterio agustino de Erfurt. Dentro del monasterio Lutero comienzan sus estudios de teología, (en verdad Lutero reflexionó). A pesar de que Lutero tenía mucha fé en Dios, sentía que la iglesia católica estaba teniendo prácticas que no iban de acuerdo a lo que la biblia decía, (todos hemos escuchado aunque sea alguna vez sobre ciertas prácticas de la iglesia católica), el creía que lo único perfecto era la Biblia y el mensaje divino, no el papa ni los representantes de la iglesia. (Ya en este punto entendemos un poco más sobre el papado).
Obviamente estas ideas fueron tomadas de mala forma por sus superiores, ya que claramente atentaba al orden jerárquico y eclesiástico de la iglesia, sin embargo esto no trascendería más allá, aunque esto no duró mucho ya que luego fué enviado a Roma por encargo de los conventos observantes, con la finalidad de entrevistarse con el prior general de la orden y la santa sede. (Spoilert alert, aquí se pone buena la cosa).
Durante esta visita a Roma Lutero observa una situación desagradable, el cual era la venta de indulgencias ofrecidas al pueblo para comprar el perdón de sus familiares muertos, prometiéndoles la salida del purgatorio y el descanso a sus almas. (Sólo espero que sus familiares sí estén en el cielo). Obviamente esto a Lutero le causa molestia, pues consideraba que el perdón no se podía comprar, al igual que también le causó molestia que con las recaudaciones de la venta de indulgencias se financiaran obras arquitectónicas, como la construcción de la basílica de san Pedro,(aunque no era para lo único que se utilizaban, te apuesto que ese dato no te lo sabías ¿cuántos indultos crees que venderían?, re turbio).
Los métodos utilizados para que la gente comprara las indulgencias fué provocar miedo con pinturas para que así accedieran a comprar una indulgencia, a pesar de la condiciones sociales y culturales que pudieran tener.
De vuelta al monasterio Lutero hacer notar su molestia, sin embargo él creía que esto solo sucedía en Roma y que el papa no estaba atento de las acciones de algunos predicadores romanos, (pobre, tuvo mucha fé), sus ideas reformistas se sustentan más cuándo se entera que esto era legal y que emanaba del papa, es así como comienza a formular una serie de tesis y postulados en contra de la venta de indulgencias, el poder del papa, su infalibilidad y los métodos utilizados por la iglesia y su orden jerárquico. (“Ya nos exhibiste”, se les cayó el negocio).
Fue entonces cuando Lutero escribió y clavó en la puerta de la iglesia del castillo de wittenberg sus 95 tesis. (Tenía mucho que decir, ¡Bien por luther!). Bueno, obviamente sabemos que esto traería consecuencias, sus tesis no solo lograron la discusión deseada, si no que también causó la apertura de un tribunal de inquisición que culminaría en la excomulgación de Lutero. (Qué podíamos esperar, por suerte solo fué eso).
Federico el sabio organizó un “secuestro” para salvar la vida de Lutero, Lutero se quedaba en el castillo de wartburg cómo doncel de Jorge, y fué allí donde tradujo el Nuevo Testamento a alemán. (Una de sus obras más importantes y aplaudidas). Esto marcó el quiebre de la iglesia católica y nace la nueva forma de organización cristiana denominada como reforma protestante. (“Pude, no pudieron”).
Ok.. ya llegamos hasta aquí, eso fué intenso jajaja esos fueron los aspectos más relevantes de la película claramente basados en la historia. Qué bueno que Lutero puso un alto y expuso estas malas praxis detrás de la iglesia católica, si no bueno, la iglesia católica sería aún más rica de lo que es hoy en día, (que se note la ironía).
Pero bueno vamos al grano… Entremos en materia;
¿Cómo esto afectaría a la historia que cambios produciría y de qué forma nos conscierne a nosotros?
A raíz de esto toda Europa durante el siglo xv en adelante vivió transformaciones políticas y sociales, pasando de la Edad Media a la Edad Moderna, la cual estuvo marcada como ya sabemos primeramente con el renacimiento y todo lo que esto conllevó. Ahora todo tiene sentido, importante lo que logró, no?
Lutero pertenecía al grupo de intelectuales que comentábamos en clases que cuestionaba el poder y los abusos de la iglesia, sin embargo fué más radical que muchos de sus amigos, y ya vemos por qué.
Probablemente varias de las edificaciones que vimos en clase también fueron construidas por esos indultos. Ahora ya sabemos otra historia de detrás de las edificaciones de la historia.

In Jekaterinburg, östlich des Urals, lag vor zwei Wochen bereits Schnee, meterdick. Jemand hatte aus Spaß einen Riesenpenis aus Schnee gebaut, der Bürgermeister beschimpfte die Bastler heftig als Heimat Verräter und schickte die Polizei, den Penis zu entsorgen. Es kam zu einer Kettenreaktion, die Schneepenisse verbreiteten sich wie eine Seuche über die Stadt, auf den Höfen der Wohnhäuser, auf den Autos und sogar vor dem Rathaus. Die Polizei strengte sich an, vergeblich. Auf den zahlreichen Konferenzen "Für freies liberales Russland" in Prag, Riga und Berlin, deutete die demokratische Opposition diese Penisse als mögliches Zeichen des Widerstandes. Vielleicht will das zum Schweigen gebrachte Volk uns damit eine Botschaft schicken, seine Unzufriedenheit mit der politischen Situation im Land ausdrücken, dachten die Exilpolitiker. Doch einige Tage später kam auch in Jekaterinburg die Sonne, die Penisse verschwanden. Nun werden wir nie erfahren, was das Volk Russlands wirklich denkt.
In Deutschland bleibt Schnee nur ein Traum, aus der Sicht der Natur war der Herbst ein voller Erfolg, die Menschen frieren trotzdem, sogar unter der Decke. Wie immer wenn es draußen kalt und dunkel wird, gehe ich auf Lesetour, diese Woche in Gera, Erfurt, Eisleben und Wurzen.
