Makarov: Ussuri Brown Bear "Russian Grizzly Bear"
Ursus arctos lasiotus
Also known as the Ezo Brown bear or Black Grizzly bear, this subspecies of Eurasian Brown Bear is one of the largest, with some individuals approaching the Kodiak Bear in size.
Similar to the Kamchatka Brown Bear, it differs with an elongated skull, longer nasal bones, elevated forehead and is darker in colour with some individuals being pure black.
Siberian (Amur) tigers and other bears are it's only natural predators, with documented tiger and bear interspecific competitions. Ussuri brown bears will often scavenge tiger kills and or kill smaller tigers, while Tigers are known to hunt young and sub-adult bears (bears making a significant portion of their diet).
Graves: Louisiana Black Bear
Ursus americanus luteolus
A subspecies* of the American Black Bear (U. a. americanus), the Louisiana Black Bear has been historically found in Louisiana, Mississippi, East Texas and Arkansas.
It is not substantially different from the American Black Bear, though it has a longer, flatter, narrower skull and larger molars in comparison. It's colouration is typically black, though some individuals have been known to be brown/red-brown cinnamon. It is Louisiana's official state mammal.
*The validity of this subspecies has been repeatedly debated.
Valeria: Sloth Bear "Indian Bear"
Melursus ursinus
A native species to the Indian Subcontinent, this medium sized bear feeds on ants, termites and fruit. It is also called the "labiated bear" due to its long lower lip and palate which is used to eat insects.
It's fur is pure black aside from the white "Y" or "V" patch on its chest though this can be absent in some individuals. They are similar in size with the Asian Black Bear though distinguished with it's shaggy mane, white 'sickle' claws, and rangier build.
This species is the most aggressive to humans with the largest number of recorded attacks due to a combination of close human cohabitation and a theorised predisposition to aggressive behaviour from constant attacks by tigers, leopards, rhinos and elephants.
Captain Williamson in his Oriental Field Sports (1819) wrote of how sloth bears rarely killed their human victims outright, but would suck and chew on their limbs till they were reduced to bloody pulps.
They are not known to be man eaters despite attacking humans. One individual in Mysore (Mysuru), India was recorded to have killed at least 12 people and mutilated 24 before it's death in 1957.
Shepherd: Koala "Koala Bear"**
Phascolarctos cinereus
**not a bear
An arboreal marsupial native to Australia that feeds primarily on Eucalyptus leaves. Koalas are asocial with bonding only taking place between mothers and dependant offspring. They are largely sedentary and will sleep upwards to 20 hours a day.
The word "koala" came from the Dharug word "gula" - no water. The 'u' sound was originally written phonetically as 'oo' and then became 'oa'. The three syllable pronunciation may be erroneous as a result.
White settlers adopted the 'koala' indigenous loan word in reference to the animal, where it was also referred to as, the "native bear", or the "koala bear" due to its supposed bear-ish resemblance.

I was lucky enough to visit Hokkaido for a few days, so of course I had to go look at some Golden Kamuy related places!
1. Hokkaido Kaitaku village is a big outdoor museum that archives old historical buildings, many of which appear in GK. So many, in fact, that the museum handed me a map where they list the buildings that appear in the manga and it was most of them.

I even saw two cosplayers dressed up as Inkarmat and Suenaga doing a photoshoot together in an old clinic!
I couldn't not buy a box of GK Tsukisappu Anpan too.
2. The old Sapporo Beer factory
A lot went down here...
3. I went to an Ainu cuisine restaurant. I had a bear meat hotpot, deer meat skewers, tonoto (Ainu wine made from millet), ento herb tea, among other things. They were all amazing.
They had copies of GK volumes as well. I miss you Kiroranke.
4. I soaked up in an onsen at Noboribetsu.
The beautiful sulfuric Hell Valley at Noboribetsu.
Here I went to the Noboribetsu Bear Park and saw many Ezo Higuma bears. The males are so big, and while they are cute they would be utterly terrifying to encounter in the wild.
The park also had exhibits showing Ainu living spaces, tools, clothing, and explanations about the Iomante bear ritual which were really interesting.
This was my first time in Hokkaido and it was an amazing experience. I only had a few days so I only saw Sapporo, Otaru, and Noboribetsu. I really wanted to see Abashiri prison but Hokkaido is a big island and I wasn't able to this time, but I aspire to go one day!

Hijikata, Sannan and Souma's Stories from the Manyo no Shou Stellaworth Booklet
Souma's story takes place in Ezo!

(I can’t believe this is happening…)
I secretly sighed as I beheld a nervous Yukimura Chizuru standing right next to me.
Yukimura’s room had a leak, so she had to stay in one of the soldiers’ rooms for the night. Souji found it amusing, and he said, “Why don’t you let her stay in your room, Hijikata-san? She’s your page, after all”. In the end, I couldn’t refuse and agreed to let her stay in my room.
“Um… Hijikata-san, are you sure this is okay? I don’t mind sleeping in my room, actually…”
Yukimura said that hesitantly, but…
“If I send you back to that room now, who knows what Souji will say. My room may be a little cramped for two people, but just bear with it for one night.”
“N-no, I don’t mind the space…! I’ll lay out the futon.”
After her swift denial, she started laying out the futon that Yamazaki brought here earlier.
“Hey, I can do the futon myself…”
Before I finished my sentence, Yukimura already laid out both of our futons. She’s always good at this kind of thing.
“Well then, let’s go to bed, then.”
“Y-yes!” I heard Yukimura’s nervous voice.
“…Just so you know, I’m not going to do anything weird just because we’re sleeping in the same room. I’m not that desperate to lay my hands on you.”
I said that to reassure Yukimura, but…
“I-I understand…”
Yukimura’s reply sounded like 70% relief and 30% disappointment.
(Wait a minute. Why does Yukimura sound down after what I said? I only said that to make her feel better.)
As I was thinking, I realized something and said, “…And don’t get me wrong, it’s not like you’re not attractive or anything. I said that only because of my current position and how the situation is.”
“A-ah… Yes! I understand.”
The voice that answered me sounded a little relieved.
(Why does she feel relieved by my words, anyway? Does she somehow want me to see her as a woman? ……No, she would not think like that.)
I thought so to myself and said, “I’m turning off the light.”
“Ah, yes!”
After hearing Yukimura’s reply, I blew out the oil lamp.
The room was enveloped in darkness and became very quiet.
After that, I got into the futon, but it was still the time of the night when I usually worked, so I couldn’t fall asleep, but tossed and turned all the time.
“Um…”
From the other side of the darkness, I heard a hesitant voice.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Are you really glad to let me stay in your room, Hijikata-san? If I didn’t stay, you could have focused on your work.”
“Well, while that is true, it’s okay to have a day like this once in a while. Yamazaki and Shimada also tell me to go to bed early sometimes.”
“…I see.”
“Yeah. So don’t worry about it and just go to sleep. I’ll arrange for the leak to be fixed tomorrow.”
“Thank you very much.”
After hearing her words of gratitude, the conversation came to a halt and only the sound of her breathing could be heard.
(Even though she kind of lives in confinement, she’s always concerned about us.)
As I thought so, I finally felt sleepy and closed my eyes.

“Sanna-san, are you awake? I've brought your meal."
Hearing the voice from outside the shoji door, I paused the writing that I had been doing.
"Yes, I'm awake. Please come in."
In response, the door quietly slid open, and Yukimura Chizuru-kun stepped into my room.
"I'll leave your meal here…” she said as she placed the tray with food in the corner of the room.
At that moment, a small yawn escaped from Yukimura's mouth.
"You seem tired. Did Hijikata-san give you a lot of errands to run again today?"
"Uh, I'm sorry! Actually, Hijikata-san didn’t ask me, but I volunteered. After all, I'm always grateful to all of you for your help."
"I see. You're still as kind-hearted as ever."
I spoke what was on my mind while continuing with my writing. She seemed slightly puzzled, tilting her head in wonder.
"Kind-hearted... you think so?"
Yukimura didn't seem entirely convinced, but then she seemed to think of something.
“If you don’t mind, please have your meal before it gets cold.”
"I'll have it once I finish this paragraph. Don't worry."
I replied without turning around, continuing with my documents.
It seemed that Yukimura-kun was sorry to disturb me, and she fell silent.
Time passed, and after a while, I thought, "Shall I take a break now?"
Setting my pen aside, I turned around.
"I apologize for making you wait. Shall I have the meal now? ...Oh?"
Perhaps tired of waiting, Yukimura had fallen asleep while leaning against the wall. She was breathing softly.
(If she was sleepy, she could have gone back to her room... Unless she wanted to hear my thoughts on the food?”
For a fleeting moment, I considered waking her up, but I was reluctant to do so when I saw how peacefully she slept.
"I can't let her catch a cold, and maybe I should cover her with something."
With that thought in mind, I draped my robe over Yukimura's body.
Then, I began to eat the meal placed on the tray.
Although the food got cold for a bit, Yukimura's cooking was still impeccable.
"It would have been better to eat it while it was still warm."
As I pondered, Yukimura’s eyelids slowly opened, and our eyes met.
After a brief moment, she seemed to have finally taken in the situation.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I just fell asleep..."
"It's okay. You can go back to sleep. I'll wake you up when I'm done."
"But..."
“Just have some rest. Is that okay?”
"Yes, thank you, Sannan-san."
She said bashfully and closed her eyes again, beginning to doze off.
Looking at Yukimura-ku peacefully asleep like some kind of small animal, I continued with my meal.

“It's snowing again today. I can't help but feel gloomy thinking that I'll have to shovel snow again tomorrow."
As I gazed at the silently accumulating snow outside the window, I spoke.
"That's right. I was prepared for this, but I didn't expect that winter in Ezo could be this harsh."
It had been nearly half a month since we had come to Ezo in pursuit of Vice-Commander Hijikata. While the bitter cold and the snow confined us indoors, which could be frustrating sometimes…
(Still, it's been a while since I've enjoyed such peaceful days.)
Just as I was thinking so, something caught my attention.
"Huh?"
I noticed something and paused.
"What's wrong?"
“Senpai, your hands..."
Perhaps due to the usual chores, Yukimura-senpai's fingertips were bright red from frostbites.
"Oh, this? Don't worry about it. It'll heal if I apply some medicine," Senpai replied with a smile, but I took Senpai's hand in mine.
"Souma-kun?"
Senpai seemed a little surprised, but I held Senpai's hand in both of mine and rubbed it between my fingers.
However, since my own hands were cold, Senpai’s hand wasn't warming up.
"I-It's fine, Souma-kun. I'm okay."
Perhaps out of concern for me, Senpai said that, but...
“Please let me take care of you, Senpai. I've been causing you trouble all along."
"..."
Senpai seemed bashful.
After rubbing our hands together for a while, warmth finally returned to Senpai's hand.
“I think I’m fine. Thank you."
Saying that, Senpai let go of my hand and turned away shyly.
"I should go back to my room soon. I need to get up early tomorrow.”
Senpai began to leave the room.
"Wait, Senpai!"
I inadvertently grabbed Senpai's hand to stop her from leaving.
"Um... could you stay a little longer? I... I would like to be with you a bit more, Senpai."
Senpai seemed a bit surprised by my words, her eyes blinking.
"Oh... Of course, I didn’t mean anything weird! I mean, I just thought it would be nice to chat more and spend time together! Of course, if it's inconvenient for you, I can understand..."
As I stumbled over my words, Senpai gazed at me with a somewhat bashful expression, but...
"Is that so..."
Senpai murmured. I thought I detected a tinge of disappointment in her tone, or perhaps it was just my imagination?
But before I could voice my doubt, Senpai smiled and said...
"Well, I felt the same way, actually. So, let's chat a bit longer, shall we?"
With a gentle smile, Senpai said those words.

i did a lil search before asking this question so hopefully it's not redundant !! but as a crescent blade + palace guard + all friend possibilities (lol) enthusiast ... among those who would be comfortable with it, which of the platonic crew would give the best hugs? fingers crossed for heval, i think they deserve a big bear hug <3
Heval is definitely okay with giving/receiving hugs!! But they tend to reserve it only for people they've known for a long time.
Tûjo actually likes to receive hugs, but he doesn't initiate it much.
Ishrah and Kaja are the most enthusiastic huggers, but that also means they tend to hug a little too hard lol.
Ezo and Ziryan don't like hugging much, though they'll still hug close friends and family.
I'd say Siham is the best hugger, actually 🤔 Their hugs probably feel very soothing.

So since in the Kemono Friends game the protagonist has a party made up for five Friends, I wanted to give my thoughts on what Kaban's party might look like based upon characters she's met either in canon or fanon.
Kaban - Party Leader and strategist
Serval - Kaban's party has to include Serval and she is the best choice for speed and agility probably
Brown Bear - Brown Bear would be the main offensive choice, if a mission is important as a high ranking hunter she would also probably be the first to join up.
Donkey - Donkey would probably be good at defense and also as a traveling merchant would probably be good to travel with story wise.
Toki - Toki is probably the bird Friend Kaban is closest to so she's the best choice for arial combat
Red Fox (not to be confused with Ezo Red Fox my usual fox muse) - Red Fox was shown to have pretty much the same skill set as Serval in the chapter in which she appeared and I personally value agility in combat a lot but also she can be Serval's rival on the adventure.
If I where to try to tackle @sins-of-the-sea's main storyline plot this would also be my 'crew' for the thread as well.

1869-Hijikata Toshizō,(土方歳三) Japanese commander
Hijikata Toshizō (土方 歳三, May 31, 1835 – June 20, 1869) was a Japanese warrior. As Vice-Commander (副長, Fukucho) of the Shinsengumi, he resisted the Meiji Restoration and fought to his end.
Following the Boshin War in 1868, Kondō and Hijikata led the Shinsengumi in their final battles against the new government and fought in the Battle of Toba–Fushimi in January 1868. The Shinsengumi returned to Edo and was later reformed into a unit known as the Kōyō Chinbutai (甲陽鎮撫隊, "Pacification Corps") and departed from Edo for Kōfu Castle on March 24 upon orders to suppress the uprisings there. On March 29, 1868, Kondō, Hijikata and the Kōyō Chinbutai resisted an attack by the Imperial forces at the Battle of Kōshū-Katsunuma for about two hours but lost, and they were scattered and fled to Edo.
In October 1868, Hijikata and Ōtori Keisuke led Shogunate forces to occupy the fortress of Goryōkaku in the Battle of Hakodate, and continued to eliminate local resistance. When the short-lived Ezo Republic was founded in December, Hijikata was made a Deputy Defence Minister (Vice-minister of the Army).[6] Imperial troops continued to attack by land and sea.
During the Battle of Hakodate, the final battle of the Boshin War, Hijikata summoned his 16-year-old page, Ichimura Tetsunosuke on June 14 (lunar calendar May 5), 1869, to a private room in an inn. There, he entrusted Ichimura with a death poem, his katana, a letter, a photograph of himself, and several strands of his hair. Ichimura was instructed to bear them to the home of Hijikata's brother-in-law Satō Hikogorō in Hino. The death poem entrusted to Ichimura reads:
Though my body may decay on the island of Ezo, my spirit guards my lord in the East.
In the final conflict of the revolution, on June 20 (lunar calendar May 11), 1869, Hijikata was killed near the Ippongi Kanmon (一本木関門) by a bullet that shattered his lower back while leading his troops on horseback. His body was later claimed by Koshiba Chōnosuke and others.

Kumano-dake, A Misty Walk to the High Point of Zao-san
We woke up in our Ryokan in Kaminoyama, a medium sized town in Yamagata prefecture. Our goal for the day was to climb Zao-san then drive back home to Utsunomiya. Asaka told me that Zao-San was famous, to which I replied, of course it is, since it’s included in the Hyakumeizan, which documents the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. Kumano-dake is the name of the highest peak on Zao-san, so multiple names are used to describe the top of the mountain. Such is the case with many peaks in Japan. There are several ways to climb this peak, but since I had with me a toddler, a pregnant woman and a unstable weather forecast, I planned for the easiest route which started from Zao Kattadake Sancho Parking Lot at the end of Zao Highline. We paid 550 Yen to park at the end of the toll road where there was a restaurant and visitor center. We walked by this large building and turned left at a T junction, heading for the highest point of the volcano.
There were bear warning signs, which had me a little concerned because of the limited visibility. I had no idea what was more than 20 meters away from me. In Japan there are two types of bear, the Asiatic Black Bear and the Ezo Brown Bear. The latter is closely related to the Siberian Grizzly Bear but found only in Hokkaido, while the former is allegedly much more aggressive and dangerous than the American Black Bear that I am familiar with.
Aside from my irrational paranoia, the hike was super easy and straightforward.
The vividly colored Okama crater lake was to our right, but it was too foggy to clearly see the reportedly spectacular sight below.
Leif did a good job walking but eventually he asked to be carried. After about a mile of mostly flat walking, the trail started to climb more steeply. We would hear bells in the distance, and moments later other hikers would emerge from the mist. Leif started demanding that I summon more bells, as if I had the power to do so. Leif didn't want to get in the carrier so I carried him in my arms, and after a bicep workout we finally made it to the top.
There were several markers, rocks, shrines and a shelter atop the summit.
I climbed the tallest of these rocks, which was more of a decoration that a natural feature.
We then entered the summit shelter where we had our lunch protected from the elements.
After our lunch, we headed due east aiming to take a slightly different way down.
On the way down we visited Zao-San East Slope. I’m not sure why this location is marked on Peakbagger, but my guess is that it is possibly a contender for the Miyagi prefecture high point. It’s a liner so I wandered about somewhat aimlessly until I felt satisfied.
On the way back down we got a better view of the Okama, which is the main attraction of the area.
After returning to the visitor center, we decided to continue up the bonus peak Kattadake.
There was a shrine at the summit, but sadly we still had no views.
As we returned back to our car the weather started to clear. We would have had much better views if we started off an hour later. Oh well, at least we avoided the crowds.
We then had a long drive back to Utsunomiya, ending our hiking trip with successful attempts of three Hyakumeizan peaks; a P2k, P3k and P4k respectively.
