REVIEW: HTI's Fun Home - An Ambitious and Heartfelt Premier for Hamilton's Theatre Community
Tumblr media
Adapted from Alison Bechdel’s groundbreaking graphic novel, Fun Home is a refreshing original musical about the power of memory and how it helps us shape, reexamine or even destroy our identity. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. It was the unexpected winner of Best Musical at the 2015 Tony Awards, championed the underrepresented (specifically women writers and directors) and has become a sorely needed addition to the musical theatre zeitgeist.
Hamilton Theatre Inc. has taken an ambitious risk with producing Fun Home as part of their 65th season. It is Hamilton Ontario's premier of the show and there has been a great deal of anticipation regarding its opening. After several health based challenges leading up to opening night, the show finally opened its doors to Maple Avenue and the Bechdel "fun home." While the production has its flaws, it ultimately grants audiences a brave, humourous and heart-felt look at the lives of the Bechdel family and how tragedy can lead to healing and hope.
Director Tyler Collins has staged Fun Home to incorporate all the memories present-day Alison recalls. The main set is the house, which begins as a dusty relic and is unveiled as Alison's father's passion project and, as we discover, a way to express his closeted queerness. The set design has some effective reveal elements to it which I won't spoil here but shows the ingenuity in how to make larger scenes work on a small stage.
HTI often faces the challenges of spacing and this time, the orchestra is affected. Some members were in the loft and some were on the ground floor which often made the sound levels uneven and several songs were very difficult to hear over the instruments. Lesson 101 at HTI is always the power of projection as the cast is not mic'd and the hanging mics only provide so much assistance. Due to many cast members recovering from illness, this may have affected their ability to project so bravo to those who pushed through. That being said, audience members who are not familiar with the songs and story may find difficulty in hearing several cast members throughout. The production features some moody lighting that adds to the overall atmosphere of the show but is also underlit for several scenes. The actors faces were often so dark that the emotional impact was frequently lost. Perhaps, for the remaining shows, some extra spotlight usage or warm washes would help resolve this.
Where this show shines is in its casting. It is no easy feat to cast three individuals to play the same character at various points in their life. Collins and the creative team made brilliant choices in casting Kristi Boulton (Present-day Alison), Sabrina Gabrielle (Medium Alison) and Ariana Abudaqa (Small Alison). Each of these actors bring charm, humour and nuance to their performances and they even match one another in stature and vocal prowess.
Boulton interacts with the other versions of Alison in an endearing way while making hilarious quips about situations as she tries to make sense of her past. Boulton impresses with her deep understanding of the source material and channels the emotional impact of the story with deep respect and soaring vocals, particularly in Maps and the gut-wrenching Telephone Wire. Gabrielle embodies the nervous energy of Medium Alison perfectly while they accept their sexuality and their awkwardly joyful Changing My Major is equal parts funny and relatable. I hope to see more of Gabrielle on stage in the future. Small Alison is energetic and sassy, almost to a fault. There is undeniably a great deal of talent in Abudaqa but her performance of Ring of Keys comes off a bit too manic and less reflective in the realization of Alison's sexuality. It is a pivotal moment in the show and it doesn't have the impact it should. All this to say that at the finale, these three will have you tearing up with their powerful performance and gorgeous harmonization. Bravo.
While Alison is our protagonist, the show ultimately focuses on the strained relationship with her father Bruce, his closeted sexuality and the deeply concerning (and ultimately tragic) decisions he makes. Ian McKechnie is another strong casting choice in this role. He understands the levels needed to make this role work so that the audience never hates him but like, Alison, never truly understands him. The moments of rage and intensity delivered by McKechnie shows off his skilled acting ability and the tension and despair never feels phoned in. Very impressive work.
There is a great deal more to praise about HTI's Fun Home. Amber Mill's breaks our hearts with her tragically resentful Days and Days. This song is a key example of why musical theatre exists: to show emotion and reveal one's self when words simply aren't enough. Mills demonstrates the heartbreak in this song and it is delivered beautifully. The Bechdel brothers (Gretchen Tellez and Olive Millie) deliver some refreshing moments of levity in Come to the Fun Home and Raincoat of Love and Jackie Mahoney and newcomer to the stage, Ivan Bond provide balanced support as Joan (Alison's girlfriend) and various characters throughout. The costumes are period accurate for the 1970's and the colour matching for the characters, particularly the Alison trio, is creative and clever.
Tumblr media
HTI's Fun Home is a welcomed piece of musical theatre in our community and almost a decade since its original debut, still has a story that needs to be told. Audiences will come to understand more about the rollercoaster of emotions while discovering one's sexuality, the hardships associated with it and how the past can be our greatest resource to accepting ourselves and those who impact our lives. Tickets are selling quickly for this Hamilton premier. Go to the Fun Home.

🎶✨✔️ for the Lupin asks?
🎶favorite track/ost?
All versions of the core Lupin III Theme. It's iconic for very good reasons.
I have a special affection for the 2014 theme, which plays while Lupin and Jigen do something particularly cheeky to the ostensible Macguffin of the film:
youtube
✨favorite thing about the franchise?
The way it's proven capable of remaining itself while also taking on elements of the creative staff at the time.
Yamamoto Sayo's noir-y Fujiko feat. Lupin III is very different from Miyazaki's more round-edged, gadgety visuals, both of which differ from Monkey Punch's original hard-nosed and stylized imagery, but you never lose the core joy of Lupin III having a fun crime adventure, sowing chaos and doing it for the thrill of it.
I'll watch a Lupin film from 1990 with friends and we'll be able to enjoy it in the same way as one plus or minus a decade in either direction, owing to how well it adapted to the zeitgeist over the decades. On a meta level, it really does feel like people retelling a myth to the kids. Sure, maybe dad's story has more explosions and maybe the samurai is more of a dork in grandma's version, but both are telling a story about about the one time they met Arsene Lupin III, and that counts for a lot on a deeper level.
I think Green vs. Red says it best in what I might be misremembering as it's final lines.
Pops: "There's another new Lupin on the loose!"
Some cop: "Another knock-off, sir?"
Pops: "Nope, this one's the real-deal reboot!"
There is no one real-deal Lupin, but every face of Lupin III is authentic. (Even his "real" face is literally a mask.)
✔️movie/special you’d recommend others watch (& why)
Castle of Cagliostro is the answer you might be tired of hearing but it's absolutely the correct one. It's a banger of a film and features cuts that still looks impressive 30+ years later. It's funny and fun as all-get-out, just make sure you're watching one of the dubs where Zenigata's VA really hams up the Printing Presses scene.
Otherwise, I'm partial to Dead or Alive as just a put it on and have fun adventure movie, preferably with the lights turned off and your drink of choice in hand. The way the prison break and car chase in the first couple of minutes ramp up takes you in, and it keeps things fresh throughout. (And it's got the tidbit with Zenigata deciding to name his autobiography "Love and War With Lupin III", so there's that for the Lupin/Pops contingent to which I belong.)

why i think about this song: this song is fun to listen to. i also appreciate the zeitgeist this song embodies when it came to natural disaster relief in 2017. this remix was an effort to raise relief funds for three major areas affected by natural disasters: houston, puerto rico, and mexico, a fact that i didn't really think too much about due to the fact that i was in the process of recovering from the damage that hurricane harvey wrought on my hometown (h-town till i drown baby!!). listening to it now doesn't have the same kick as it did in 2017, but then again there's not a lot of songs made to fill such a niche demanded at the time that hold up at all.

The New Pornographers — Continue as a Guest (Merge)
Tumblr media
Photo by Ebru Yildiz / Composite by Nicole White
youtube
At their best, the New Pornographers are an architectural feat. Were not the various pieces so perfectly arranged, the collective of musical heavyweights might collapse under its own density.
2001’s manic, tart debut, Mass Romantic, is now (as it was then, to an extent) hailed as a powerpop landmark. Listening back, I’m still slightly amazed at the circus-level balancing act achieved by three remarkably distinct, powerful voices, A.C. Newman, Neko Case and Dan Bejar.
By the time they released Twin Cinema in 2005, the NPs had ripened from a scrappy supergroup (a term they never liked) into something more comfortable, a band. Since then, amicable lineup shafts notwithstanding, the group has continued to release good records on a semi-regular basis.
But as anyone who has held a job can attest, being consistently good at what you do generates diminishing returns. The handful of six or seven-point-whatevers awarded by that one music website reinforces the narrative that the New Pornographers peaked with Twin Cinema. I can’t decide whether or not that’s true, but it’s beside the point. Continue as a Guest sounds exactly like a New Pornographers record. It’s energetic, insanely catchy and occasionally thrilling pop music. The compositions are dense and clever and complex, but not too much for their own good. Newman has been the primary songwriter since Bejar’s temporary-ish departure in 2014 and, while he might be consistent he – like the rest of his cohort- is incapable of phoning it in.
Playing with the light and shadow of modern life, Continue as a Guest offers a gratifyingly hot-blooded exploration of socal decay and isolation (“I don’t want to go by myself/Come with me,” Newman and Case implore against the glimmering shuffle of “Last and Beautiful”). Of the  title anthem, Newman says that the phrase “felt very apropos to the times. Feeling out of place in culture, in society—not feeling like a part of any zeitgeist, but happy to be separate and living your simple life, your long fade-out.”
That’s not to say Continue as a Guest is a bummer. Power-pop connoisseur Tom Scharpling described 2014’s Brill Bruisers as the Drive soundtrack by way of ABBA, and that spirit persists via shiny production, neon disco beats, retro horns and gorgeous, exuberant vocal harmonies. It might not be zeitgeisty, but it certainly sets a nice tone. We’re all struggling, why not see if we can still enjoy ourselves?

Harmony in Contrast: E. L. Lutyens and the Checkerboard of Progress
E. L. Lutyens, the renowned architect, stood at the threshold of a burgeoning era, where industry's relentless march forward promised a cascade of technological enlightenment. His architectural vision mirrored not only the present but also anticipated the future, like a symphony conductor sensing the crescendo before it arrives. Lutyens' ethos was one of duty-bound expression, a commitment to embody the zeitgeist of his time and to project it into the future.
In his designs, Lutyens encapsulated the duality of progress, much like the checkered pattern he so admired. Black and white, symbolizing contrasts, coexisted in harmony under his meticulous gaze, reflecting the binary essence of computational logic. His architectural language wasn't just about erecting structures; it was about orchestrating a dialogue between tradition and innovation, between the tangible and the abstract.
In the checkerboard motif, Lutyens found a metaphor for the evolving landscape of his era. Just as each square in the pattern harmonized with its opposite, Lutyens sought to blend the dichotomies of his time – tradition with modernity, craftsmanship with industrialization. His checkerboard designs weren't just aesthetic choices; they were architectural allegories, telling stories of adaptation and evolution.
As industry surged forward, Lutyens didn't resist change; instead, he embraced it with open arms. His designs reflected the industrial pulse of his time, incorporating elements that hinted at the mechanized future awaiting humanity. But amidst the steel and concrete, Lutyens never forgot the human touch. His structures weren't just feats of engineering; they were vessels of human experience, inviting occupants to navigate the labyrinth of modernity while anchored in timeless principles.
Lutyens' Page Street Housing in London stands as a testament to his foresight and diligence. In its checkerboard patterns, one can discern the echoes of a culture on the cusp of technological enlightenment. Each square, meticulously placed, tells a story of progress – a story of a world hurtling toward a future where industry and technology would reign supreme.
But Lutyens' genius lay not just in reflecting the present but in shaping the future. His checkerboard designs weren't mere echoes of the industrial age but harbingers of a new era, where architecture would become a symphony of technology and tradition, each note harmonizing with the next to create a timeless melody.
In the grand symphony of architecture, E. L. Lutyens played the role of the visionary composer, weaving together threads of tradition and innovation, industry and craftsmanship. And as his structures endure the test of time, they stand not just as monuments to his genius but as beacons guiding us toward a future where the checkerboard patterns of progress continue to shape our world.

sometimes i think about trying to get a post popular on purpose. not for fame or clout but just like - could i do it. am i adept at figuring out the statistics and following the trends. do i know tumblr dot com well enough to predict what will make millions of people go "yeah i'll reblog that" instead of just liking it or scrolling by. i feel like on a webbed site where the most random shit will suddenly catch the zeitgeist and absolutely destroy someone's inbox, it would be a great feat indeed to purposefully make a post blow up just for the hell of it. the reward is nothing but the risk is also nothing and additionally it would be satisfying as fuck. i'm too tired to do it anytime soon but someday....maybe someday......

100 Year Old Movie
Why Worry? Released Sep 2, 1923
Today is Silent Movie Appreciation Day, September 29, and in honor of that I watched Harold Lloyd's 1923 silent feature Why Worry?. This is an hilarious comedy that showcases Lloyd's talent for physical humor and daring stunts.
Tumblr media
Why Worry? tells the story of Harold Van Pelham, a wealthy hypochondriac who travels to a tropical island for his health. There he finds himself in the middle of a revolution, and befriends a giant named Colosso, who helps him rescue his nurse and stop the rebels. Along the way, Harold discovers that he is not as sick as he thinks, and falls in love with his nurse.
Tumblr media
The film was directed by Fred Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, who also collaborated with Lloyd on many of his other films, such as Safety Last! (1923) and The Freshman (1925). The film was shot in San Pedro, California, and featured some impressive sets and props, such as a replica of a South American town and a 12-foot-tall mechanical giant.
Harold Lloyd was one of the most popular and influential comedians of the silent era. Lloyd made nearly 200 comedy films, both silent and talkies, from 1914 to 1947. His bespectacled "glasses character" was a resourceful, ambitious go-getter who matched the zeitgeist of the 1920s-era United States. His films frequently contained "thrill sequences" of extended chase scenes and daredevil physical feats. Lloyd performed most of his own stunts, despite having lost two fingers in his right hand in an accident with a prop bomb in 1919.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film also stars Jobyna Ralston as Harold's nurse, who was Lloyd's frequent leading lady. Ralston appeared in seven of Lloyd's films, and is remembered for her on-screen chemistry with him. She also had a featured role in Wings (1927), the first Oscar-winning film, where she met her future husband Richard Arlen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The giant is played by John Aasen, who was one of the tallest actors in history. He was born on March 5, 1890, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to a very tall Norwegian mother and an unknown father. He grew up in North Dakota, where he helped out in his family's restaurant and attended school. He was a Freemason and a sideshow performer before he became a film actor.
Why Worry? Was his film debut. He appeared in several other films, such as The Soul of the Beast (1923), Bengal Tiger (1936), and The Son of Kong (1933). He was known for his gentle and friendly personality, despite his imposing stature. He died on August 1, 1938, in Mendocino, California, at the age of 48. His skeleton was donated to Loma Linda University, where it was confirmed that he was 7 feet 4.8 inches (2.26 m) tall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why Worry? is a classic example of silent comedy that still entertains audiences today. If you are looking for a fun and funny way to celebrate Silent Movie Appreciation Day, I highly recommend watching this film.
