EPONA was a Celtic goddess. Her name contains an allusion to the horse: in Celtic, "epos" means “horse” and the suffix “-ona” affixed simply means “on”. Epona is the patron goddess of mares and foals. The oldest information about the Gallic goddess of horses is found in Juvenal (Satires, VIII, 155 ff). He writes: “... iurat / solam Eponam and facies olida ad praesepia pictas”. We can also find another text mentioning Epona in Minucius Felix (Octavianus, XXVII, 7): “Nisi quod vos et totos asinos in stabulis cum vestro vel [sua] Epona consecratis.”

The known inscriptions about Epona were excavated all around the territories corresponding to ancient Gaul and Germany, but also on the Danubian provinces, and even at Rome. The many inscriptions are often signed by soldiers, and found close to settlements, which seems to suggest that the inscriptions reveal, especially in the East, not an indigenous cult, but a military cult.

Epona occupied an important place in the Gallic religion, because the horse itself was important in the life of the Gauls.

Non-representative minorities

I never thought I'd have to explain the phenomenon of alt-right furries for a college Classics class.

Nor did I think I'd be relating it to Cicero's Catilinarians or Minucius Felix on Christianity. But bear with me here ― they all have something in common.

Furries are people who have an interest in anthropomorphic animals. They usually have one particular animal they feel a strong connection to, which they may adopt as their online persona (called a fursona) and even spend large quantities of money on mascot-style suits to look like (called fursuits). Studies show that furries tend to be more liberal, but around 2018, a fast-growing and vocal group of right-wing furries popped up, including a particular neo-Nazi furry group. These right-wingers made their presence known on social media using hashtags like #altfurries. Since then, much of the furry community has publicly rejected them, insisting that such bigotry doesn't belong in the furry community and that alt-right furries aren't real furries.

In Cicero's Catilinarians, in Minucius Felix's dialogue Octavius, in Juvenal's Satire 2, and beyond, the authors insist that the minorities they're describing are non-representative of their country as a whole. Cicero bashes Catiline and his co-conspirators, asserting that Rome would be better off without the likes of them; Minucius Felix's pagan conversationalist describes Christians as "the dregs of society"; Juvenal laments the "degradation to which we [that is, Roman society] have come" because of effeminate men. Though Juvenal does it to a lesser degree, each of these authors dissociate the populations they deem distasteful from their society as a whole.

Whenever a group of people within a larger group to whom one belongs display negative characteristics, one wants to immediately discount them as not being a "real" member of their group. Furries insist that racist furries aren't real furries or don't belong at furry conventions; ancient Roman pagans insisted that Christians or worshippers of Bacchus didn't belong within Roman society. The concept of societal rejects endures...and yes, when I said "bear with me" earlier, I did intend it as a furry pun.

Fatos históricos de Atibaia

1638 Realizadas entradas e assentamentos de fazendas além do Sertão de Juqueri, no rio chamado Tibaia. A luta pelo poder das famílias Pires e Camargo continua em São Paulo.

1653-1660 Os irmãos Jerônimo e Marcelino de Camargo fazem várias excursões no lugar entre o Rio Atibaia e a Serra Itapetinga. Instalam a Fazenda São João Batista, convivendo com os índios guarulhos e guaxis, de língua tupi.

1665 O Padre Mateus Nunes de Siqueira celebra a Primeira Missa na Fazenda, deixando ali alguns paulistanos e 500 índios. No ano de 1666 já estava estabelecido um Arraial.

1722 O Arraial é elevado à categoria de Freguesia de São João Batista de Atibaia. Assentam-se fazendas e denominam bairros. Os Pires chegam na Freguesia disputando cargos.

1769 É instalada a categoria de Vila e a disputa pelo poder cresce cada vez mais pelas duas famílias. No ano 1770, Lucas de Siqueira Franco é o mais importante político de Atibaia. Os índios guarulhos desaparecem. Os guaxis e os carijós permanecem. Cobra-se taxa nas pontes sobre os Rios Atibaia, Cachoeira e Atibaiaínha.

1808 A família real portuguesa chega ao Rio de Janeiro. Dom João VI declara a abertura dos portos. O sistema administrativo é dividido em Províncias. Atibaia exporta gêneros alimentícios para a Europa. Trigo, centeio, arroz, açúcar e aguardente.

1864 Atibaia chega à categoria de cidade. Nas suas fazendas se organizam cafezais e algodoais. Mas, o transporte é precário, sobre lombo de burros. Exporta banha e rapadura.

1873 Atibaia constrói a melhor Casa de Câmara e Cadeia da Província, cujo presidente é José Lucas da Silveira Campos. A Igreja Matriz foi reedificada. Oito cidadãos possuem grande fortuna: Antonio Felix de Araújo Cintra; Eleutério de Araújo Cintra; Gertrudes Laura de Campos; Gertrudes da Silveira Campos; Joaquim Alves do Amaral; Coronel Joaquim Gonçalves da Cunha; João Marinho Fagundes e Silva, e José Soares de Lima.

1875 Existia em Atibaia: – 37 plantadores de café e algodão, e 21 plantadores de algodão; 6 máquinas de enfardar algodão movidas a roda d’água; 5 máquinas de beneficiar café movidas a roda d’água; 1 máquina de beneficiar cafémovida a vapor; 4 lojas de ferragens; 10 armazéns com ferragens e louças; 20 armazéns de secos e molhados; 3 alfaiates; 5 carpinteiros; 1 fábrica de velas; 3 ferralheiros; 2 folheiros; 5 ferradores de animais; 1 fogueteiro; 2 padarias; 4 ranchos para tropas; 1 professor de música.

1884 Chega a Estrada de Ferro, as locomotivas a vapor tinham suas fornalhas alimentadas com carvão coque (hulha) trazido da Inglaterra. Intensificada a exportação de algodão e café direto para o porto de Santos.

1888 Abolição da escravatura pela Lei Áurea, tem o início a decadência das fazendas. Proclamada a República, a divisão administrativa denominou-se Estados. Início da imigração italiana para os trabalhos agrícolas. Os espanhóis e outros povos da Europa dão início também a imigração.

1900 A plantação de algodão fracassa com a praga da lagarta, o coruquerê. Em 1901 o clima de Atibaia havia mudado, fazia calor em outubro. Proibidos os hansenianos de entrarem na cidade. Instalada a primeira linha telefônica. Deoclides Freire inaugura a primeira confeitaria e sorveteria na cidade.

1903 Primeira exibição de cinema ao ar livre. Em 1904 a temperatura no inverno desceu ao 0º. Encontrada peça arqueológica (machado oval de pedra polida) no Ribeirão do Moinho. Em 1905 foi inaugurada a luz elétrica e em seguida o Grupo Escolar. O Major Juvenal Alvim constrói a Fábrica de Tecidos São João, mas o algodão vinha da Borborema.

1913 Exibido o filme mudo, O Naufrágio do Titanic. Em 1915, o primeiro enfermo é internado na Santa Casa. No ano 1918, a gripe espanhola dizima mais de 40% das crianças. Em 1921 é inaugurada a primeira linha de automóveis para a Estação férrea (Caetetuba). No ano 1922 (janeiro) tremor de terra em Atibaia (5 na escala ritcher), em dezembro inaugura o Hotel Municipal

1924 José Pires Alvim (filho do Major Juvenal Alvim) casa-se com Rita de Lourdes Cardoso de Almeida. Inaugurada a Caixa Econômica, na residência do coletor Daniel Peçanha de Morais, adjunta à Coletoria. Criada a Vila São Vicente de Paula (asilo). Elizeu Silveira é nomeado o primeiro carteiro da cidade (março). Caetano das Pedras, tocador de zabumba da Congada, celebra o dia 13 de Maio. Os Irmãos Borghi fabricam as primeiras telhas francesas. A Festa das Brotas atrai romeiros.

1925 Dr. Álvaro Correia Lima viaja com a família para sua terra natal, na Paraíba. Passa por Atibaia o Homem Santo acompanhado de multidão. Criada a Diocese de Bragança. A moda feminina escandaliza o país, as atibaianas aderem ao charleston. No ano 1926 é inaugurado o Cine República, construído pelo Major Juvenal Alvim. Consternação entre as mulheres da cidade: morreu num desastre de avião, Rodolpho Valentino.

1927 Alta do café. Inaugurada a estrada de Rodagem para São Paulo, a linha de jardineiras e a Usina Elétrica. No ano 1929, aterra o primeiro avião em Atibaia, da Esquadrilha da Polícia Federal e sobre avarias. Durante uma tempestade a ponte do Rio Atibaia “navegou” levando quatro pessoas e um burro com cargueiro. O Cine República exibe A Divina, com Greta Garbo.

1932 Atibaia vive a campanha da Revolução: Ouro para o bem de São Paulo. Seguem voluntários para as batalhas. João Paulino compõe o samba para banda, Saudade da Minha Terra.

1935 Apareceu no Carnaval o lança-perfume. Inaugurado o Hotel Rosário.

1936 9 de fevereiro, faleceu o Major Juvenal Alvim. Em agosto o termômetro desce ao 0º. Atibaia dedica-se a fruticultura. Tem início o calçamento da cidade. Importada a semente da Austrália, o eucalipto substitui a lenha de matas, nas locomotivas. Inicia a criação do gado zebu. Os japoneses imigrantes começam a chegar, os batateiros. Inaugurada a Estância Lynce, o Clube de Campo e o loteamento Vila Gardênia. Faltam os alimentos básicos com a Segunda Guerra Mundial. José Pires Alvim (Zezico) é o líder político que substituiu seu pai, o Major.Inaugurada a Rodovia Fernão Dias. Atibaia tem dois times de futebol rivais: São João e Cetebê. Duas bandas de música.

1956 Edmundo Zanoni é nomeado Prefeito de Atibaia. Atibaia inicia a corrida imobiliária implantando loteamentos. Início da cultura de pêssegos.

Leon Gallery Announces the Spectacular Mid-Year Auction 2018!

Leon Gallery has set the date for its much-awaited, scintillating Spectacular Mid-Year Auction 2018 on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at its Eurovilla I showrooms on the corner of Rufino Street and Legaspi Street, Legaspi Village in Makati. Headlining the must-have masterpieces are an exquisite Lorenzo Guerrero of life along the Pasig River. 

Guerrero, who became most famous as the mentor of the brilliant and internationally-celebrated Juan Luna, was also a wonderful painter in his own right. He was educated by the foremost Spanish instructors at the Manila academia : Manuel de la Cortina, who was himself a graduate of the Madrid art academy and his successor Nicolas Valdez. Guerrero, in fact, was to become the teacher of Manila’s finest artists, from Simon de la Rosa Flores and his nephew Fabian de la Rosa, Felix Martinez and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Telesforo Sucgang, Felix Pardo de Tavera, and Jorge Pineda to name a few stellar painters who passed through the portals of the legendary art school.

 A 1917 work by one of Guerrero’s star pupils, Fabian de la Rosa, of a charming pair of ponies in a stableyard, provides an interesting behind-the-scenes look of a Manila home, at a time when horses were more common than automobiles. Fernando Amorsolo — who happened to be Fabian de la Rosa’s nephew — is also in the spotlight with several riveting and early works : A post-war procession outside the ruins of the Antipolo church; works from the Thirties, Forties and Fifties, from an orange-streaked sunset scene by the water to glorious country scenes “Under the Mango Tree”  and by a waterfall. The works are all the collections of several distinguished Manila families. 

A rare urban scene of the massive Ynchausti Rope Factory is a unique view of Manila in the 1920s. Scintillating Jose Joyas, one ante-dating his historic participation in the Venice Biennale (the Philippines’ first in that august art fair); others from his halcyon years in the 1970s. Other mid-century moderns include Vicente Manansala with a superb work dated 1949 that speaks allegorical almost in a style more typical of Carlos “Botong” Francisco : a trio of women pound rice, in a variety of Filipino costumes, while men pile grain in tall mountains. In the background, a sunlit landscape which suggests the Benguet rice terraces and in the foreground, a large carabao. Another work, datelined Paris, portrays a grieving mother at a child’s bier. Arturo Luz, Ang Kiukok, and Romeo Tabuena are likewise represented, as are Juvenal Sanso, Oscar Zalameda, Lao Lianben, Malang, and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. A finely-proportioned ‘comoda’ with original marquetry in a floral design, an imposing Sheraton sideboard, and a ‘Mariposa’ butterfly sofa are just some of the impressive furniture to be included in the June sale. 

 Among the collectible memorabilia, the country’s most iconic heroes are represented. There is a bread-and-butter note (dated 1891) from the Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal to the Scottish millionaire Don Alejandro S. Macleod who had thrived in Manila. Letters from various historical personalities to Teodora Alonso are also available in a single lot, including a Rizal family recipe, and more piquantly, the court documents of the suit brought against Rizal’s mother and her brother. Her unjust persecution greatly influenced Rizal’s nationalism. Most explosive is the narration of Gregoria de Jesus of the last days of Andres Bonifacio as well as a dagger bearing the markings of the Katipunan. 

This document, while having been featured in works on the Philippine Revolution has never been revealed in full previously and is certainly one of a kind. A rare autographed photograph of the Lakambini of the KKK (dedicated to the journalist Jose P. Santos) and a letter to Emilio Jacinto complete the historical offerings that will fascinate the collector and every patriot. Apropos, a BenCab of Rizal’s last days in Fort Santiago — and featuring excerpts of his “Ultimo Adios” is also a highlight, alongside an appealing work from his “Larawan” series, inspired by turn-of-the-century Philippine photographs. From the contemporary artists, exciting works by Ronald Ventura, Marcel Antonio, Jon Jaylo, Danilo Dalena, Emmanuel Garibay, Edwin Wilwayco, Manuel Ocampo (with a grim Christmas work) and Jose John Santos III are also featured. 

The Santos work echoes the themes in the rest of the auction of women of the Philippine Revolution : The painting juxtaposes ladies in traditional Filipino wear with Cretan friezes, a view of a bahay na bato through an archway, and a fragment of an antique door.

Chapter 25

PREFACE.

St. Luke, who had published his gospel, wrote also a second volume, which, from the first ages, hath been called the Acts of the Apostles. Not that we can look upon this work, as a history of what was done by all the apostles, who were dispersed in different nations; but we have here a short view of the first establishment of the Christian Church, a small part of St. Peter's preaching and actions, set down in the first twelve chapters, and a more particular account of St. Paul's apostolical labours, in the following chapters, for about thirty years, till the year 63, and the 4th year of Nero, where these acts end.

Chapter 25

Paul appeals to Cæsar. King Agrippa desires to hear him.

1 Now (about the year A.D. 60) when Festus was come into the province, after three days he went up to Jerusalem from Cæsarea.

Ver. 1. Festus having arrived at his province, goes to Jerusalem to be inaugurated. The Jews took this opportunity of requesting St. Paul might be sent to Jerusalem, that they might accomplish the iniquitous purport of their vow. Such consequence did they attribute to the death of this one man, that they had no greater favour to ask of their new governor at his auspicious entry among them. (Tirinus)

2 And the chief priests, and principal men of the Jews, went to him against Paul: and they besought him,

3 Requesting favour against him, that he would command him to be brought to Jerusalem, laying wait to kill him in the way.

Their extortions and oppressions were pushed so far, that the Jews attempted at last to deliver themselves by rebellion, which proved their utter ruin and extirpation. Indeed it was in vain to resist, for they already began to feel the truth of our Saviour's prediction, in their subjugation to the Gentiles. 5 Let them, therefore, saith he, among you that are able, going down with me, accuse him, if there be any crime in the man.

Ver. 10. St. Paul, seeing Festus only sought a plea to get rid of his cause, by putting it into the hands of the Sanhedrim, appeals to Cæsar. According to the ordinary rules of jurisprudence, appeals are only made after sentence is pronounced; but Roman citizens had a privilege of anticipating the sentence, when the judge did any thing contrary to justice; as Festus evidently did in this case, by wishing to deliver Paul, a Roman citizen, to the tribunal of his declared enemies, the Jews. The apostle knew he was secured by making this appeal: as the Roman law declared provincial governors violators of the public peace, who should either strike, or imprison, or put to death a Roman citizen, that appealed to the emperor. 11 For if I have injured them, or have committed any thing that deserveth death, I refuse not to die: but if there be nothing of these things whereof they accuse me, no man can deliver me to them. I appeal to Cæsar.

14 And as they stayed there many days, Festus told the king of Paul, saying; There is a certain man was left prisoner by Felix,

Curiosity is certainly not the best motive a person can bring with him to the investigation of religious truth: still it may occasionally become productive of good. The king was half persuaded to embrace the Christian faith. A better motive, or more serious attention, may induce some to embrace the truth, which accident may first have discovered to them. 23 And on the next day, when Agrippa, and Bernice were come with great pomp, and had entered into the hall of audience, with the tribunes and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought forth.

This was a title the emperors afterwards took, but which Augustus and Tiberius are said by Pliny, in his epistle to Trajan, and by Tertullian, to have refused, as too assuming and too high, ut nimis sublimem atque gloriosum. This was perhaps done, that none might bear the title at a time when the Lord of lords was to appear on the earth. (Tirinus) --- Whilst we can approve and admire the motives which actuated the emperors in refusing this title, we cannot go the lengths which some modern enthusiasts do, (mostly Americans, Quakers, &c.) who pretend it is blasphemy to call a mortal man a lord, as if that name were incommunicable to any but the Creator of the universe. Whence they derive this article of faith it will not be easy for us to guess; certainly not from Scripture, in which the word Dominus or Lord, applied to man, occurs almost as frequently as King. Certainly not from our Saviour's words, who give both himself and others this title, (Mark xiv. 14. and other places.) nor from St. Paul's doctrine, who also uses this word indiscriminately through his epistles, Galatians iv. 1; Ephesians vi. v.; &c. Hence we are justified in retaining this practice, in opposition to their cavils; and in treating that opinion as superstitious and void of foundation, which makes it a necessary part of religion to use no titles. Le Rire : Journal Humoristique Paraissant le Samedi.

Le Rire was a successful French humor magazine published from October 1894 through the 1950s. Founded in Paris during the Belle Époque by Felix Juven, Le Rire appeared as typical Parisians began to achieve more education, income and leisure time.

The satirical journal was filled with drawings by prominent artists. It featured full-page chromotypographs on both covers and in the centerfold.  The most prominent contributor was Théophile Steinlen. His illustrations were biting caricatures of the political "jackasses" of the day. Illustrations were contributed by well-known artists such as: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Goursat, René Georges Hermann-Paul, Juan Gris, Lucien Metivet, Georges Meunier, Jean-Louis Forain, Adolphe Willette, Joaquín Xaudaró, Leonetto Cappiello, Albert Guillaume, Manuel Luque, Jules Grandjouan, Abel Faivre, and Jules-Alexandre Grun.

Faleceu ontem na cidade de Piracicaba aos 62 anos de idade e era viúva do Sr. Francisco Antônio Pereira da Silva. Era filha do Sr. Aparecido Pereira e da Sra. Avelina Martins Pereira, ambos falecidos. Deixa os filhos: Alex Francisco Pereira da Silva, Alan Felipe Pereira da Silva e Aline Francine Pereira da Silva. Deixou também 04 netos e 01 bisneto.

O seu sepultamento deu-se ontem as 12:00 hs, saindo a urna mortuária do Velório Municipal da Vila Rezende – Sala 01, para a referida necrópole, onde foi inumada em jazigo da família.

RITA DE CASSIA MELO –

Faleceu anteontem  na cidade de Piracicaba aos 80 anos de idade e era viúva do Sr. Davino Melo. Era filha do Sr. Manoel Moreira de Faria e da Sra. Nair Martins de Faria, ambos falecidos. Deixa os filhos: Marlene Teixeira Silva, Marcos Melo, Marcelo Melo e Marli Melo. Deixou netos e bisnetos.

O seu sepultamento deu-se ontem as 13:00 hs, saindo a urna mortuária do Velório da Saudade – Sala 07 seguindo em auto fúnebre para o Cemitério Municipal na cidade de São Pedro, onde foi inumada em jazigo da família.

Faleceu ontem na cidade de Piracicaba, aos 64 anos de idade e era filho do Sr. Amaro Gomes Pereira e da Sra. Ercília Paula dos Santos, ambos falecidos. Deixa as filhas: Joelma Pereira dos Santos, Rosemeire Pereira dos Santos e Juciele Pereira dos Santos. Deixa também, genros, netos e bisnetos.

O seu sepultamento deu-se ontem as 16:00 hs saindo a urna mortuária do Velório Municipal da Vila Rezende – Sala 01, para a referida necrópole, onde foi inumado em jazigo da família.

Faleceu anteontem na cidade de São Pedro, aos 92 anos de idade e era casado com a Sra. Ivone Novais de Araújo Farias. Era filho do Sr. Franco Tomaz Farias e da Sra. Aguida Maria da Conceição, falecidos. Deixa os filhos: Adriana, Orlando, Otacílio, Carlos, Tomas e Welliton.

Faleceu ontem na cidade de Rio das Pedras, aos 66 anos de idade e era filho do Sr. Aparecido de Carvalho e da Sra. Lourdes Paião de Carvalho, falecidos. Deixa os filhos: Alexandre e Adriano. 

O seu corpo foi transladado em auto fúnebre para a cidade de Piracicaba e o seu sepultamento deu-se ontem as 13:00 hs no Cemitério Municipal da Vila Rezende, onde foi inumado em jazigo da família.

Faleceu anteontem na cidade de Rio Claro, aos 82 anos de idade e era viúva do Sr. Juvenal Manoel de Oliveira. Era filha do Sr. Valdomiro Luciano Silva e da Sra. Sebastiana Branca Libania e Silva, falecidos. 

O seu corpo foi transladado em auto fúnebre para a cidade de Campinas e o seu sepultamento deu-se ontem as 10:00 hs no Cemitério dos Amarais naquela localidade, onde foi inumada em jazigo da família.

Faleceu anteontem, nesta cidade, contava 75 anos, filho dos finados Sr. Matheus Marcon Netto e da Sra. Laura Zambianco Marcon, era casado com a Sra. Cacilda Maria Polizel Marcon; deixa os filhos: Elide Aparecida Marcon Gobbo, casada com o Sr. Jose Roberto Gobbo; Enio Donizete Marcon, casado com a Sra. Fabia Cristina M. Marcon e Edimara Marcon. Deixa netos, demais parentes e amigos.

Seu sepultamento foi realizado ontem, tendo saído o féretro às 14h00 do Velório da Saudade, sala 03 para o Cemitério Municipal da Saudade, em jazigo da família.
