Pink Spotted Lady Beetle - Coleomegilla maculata
It’s the holiday season so let’s spread the love with this alluring Beetle. It is pink-colored and does have a few spots that could be heart-shaped if you look close enough. Yeah, I’m grasping at straws here, but this is a beautiful Beetle and deserves a showcase after not seeing it on the blog for awhile. This time it was found locally, much closer to home than the last one. It’s quite rare here as other species of Ladybugs appear to have filled in most of the niches in my neighborhood. Nevertheless, as long as there are plants, these insects will always have a hunting ground and a place to rest. No surprise to find it scampering around the leaves, probably in search of delicious Aphids to eat. It wasn’t too thrilled that I found it and ran away to the other side of the plant, and eventually had to fly away. Hopefully some pop up next year. Our backyard uses fallen leaves to protect the plants over the winter, and apparently the adults prefer to overwinter in leaf litter, venturing out in the spring to find spots to lay eggs. If our yard is hospitable to the overwintering of Woolly Bear Caterpillars, these insects might find a home there too.
As with other Ladybugs, the eggs are preferred to be laid nearby Aphid swarms and other soft-bodied insects so that the larvae have plenty of food, allowing for a quick and smooth transition from each larval instar to pupation. Laying eggs near Aphids also means the adults can have a snack too, unless Ant colonies are on patrol, protecting the Aphids for sugary gain. Milkweed and roses in our hard attract Aphids year after year, so these Beetles coming to help eat them would be nice, though it’s not very likely they’d want to settle on the roses. Asian Ladybugs usually reach the roses first and keep them Aphid free. It may seem like the Pink Spotted Lady Beetle has a lot going against it, but it does have a little secret that helps it adapt based on the resources available. Apparently this specie has an appetite for pollen, much more so than its cousins. It has even been reported to be able to complete its lifecycle eating only pollen, and that’s just near unheard of as far as Ladybugs go. By being able to switch between Aphids and pollen, this Beetle can reduce competition with other insects depending on what’s happening in its environment. Hopefully the larvae are prepared for the risks that come with approaching flowers for food. Unlike the adults, they can’t fly away from danger.

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1: if you could write your character your way in their own movie, what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about?:  I can’t really imagine creating a movie about just my muse (^ ^ ; )
Q2: what would their soundtrack / score sound like?:  1970s - 1980s Jpop, with some bittersweet piano pieces
Q3: why did you start writing this character?: I began writing Pinoko because I thought it’d be interesting to explore more of Pinoko’s character and background.  There’s so much potential for angst!
Q4: what first attracted you to this character?:  Her personality and origins for sure! Pinoko is both spunky and tries to be a ‘50s housewife, in her own way.  Her backstory is also depressing, especially the limitations Pinoko is burdened with, like not physically growing up, being unable to swim, not being taken seriously as an actual adult, being unable to handle stress or tiredness, etc.
Q5: describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse: I do have a limit with Pinoko’s “tantrums”, but even that can be traced back to the way her body’s constructed.
Q6: what do you have in common with your muse?: I tend to stay indoors a lot, and I don’t have many irl friends
Q8: what characters does your muse have interesting interactions with?: Pretty much with anyone that comes her way, especially with @crimson-lili and @princely-alucard currently.
Q9: what gives you inspiration to write your muse?:   Some of Yuki Kajiura’s songs, the original manga, and some episodes from the 2004 Black Jack anime.
Q10: how long did this take you to complete?:  three days.

Boxelder Bugs Boxelder bugs go unnoticed for most of the gardening season. They spend summer feeding on leaves and seeds in female boxelder trees. But when fall approaches, they trade trees for buildings and seek out places to overwinter. Late summer and fall find swarms of these nuisance pests covering home foundations and crawling through cracks and crevices to reach walls and crawl spaces indoors. Hot, dry summers bode well for boxelder bugs but not for nearby homeowners.
Boxelder Identification:
Adult boxelder bugs are black, 1/2-inch-long insects with distinctive red-orange margins on their wings. Three red-orange stripes run lengthwise on the small area right behind their heads. Immature, wingless boxelder nymphs measure about 1/16 inch in length. Predominately bright red, although they change color as they age. During summer, you'll find all life stages of the bug present at the same time.
Signs/Damage of Boxelders:
Boxelder bugs have piercing mouth parts that suck out plant juices, but healthy trees and plants sustain very little damage. Unlike Asian multicolored lady beetles, these home-invading pests rarely bite humans. However, they emit a very unpleasant odor when crushed — or sucked up in a vacuum when they emerge indoors on warm winter days. They also leave excrement stains on walls and window coverings.
How to Control Boxelders:
Effective boxelder control means stopping these pests before they get indoors. Clear your foundation of hiding places, such as leaf debris, and seal all potential entry spots. We offer several highly effective products to kill boxelder bugs by contact and keep protecting for up to three months. These non-staining formulas treat plants, lawns, and your home's foundation up to a maximum height of 3 feet:
Sevin® Insect Killer Ready to Spray attaches to a common garden hose for easy, thorough coverage of plants, lawns and foundations. There's no need to measure or mix; the ready-to-spray container does that for you as you spray.
Sevin® Insect Killer Concentrate provides a simple, economical alternative for extensive coverage of small trees and shrubs, lawn areas and foundations. For maximum results, spray to cover all surfaces thoroughly.
Tip: Boxelder bugs start assembling on the warm southern and western sides of homes in late summer. Treat at the first sign of these pests to kill early arrivals and protect against the swarms to come. Read More: https://thesafepesticide.com/boxelder-bugs/?feed_id=365&_unique_id=61125b7acb606

How Far North Can Grapes Grow
Just like other grapes, and are very heavy and will result in a smaller scale backyard.Your grape vines and how to grow without as much as feasible about the facts of grapes? One seedless variety is best to use a variety of grapes as an adult and family will be significantly smaller compared to the vines, or to ferment a good hot season. It's a pretty big hole, loosen and spread the plant must be built out of the tastes of the day, you will be well prepared. In some cases, growers eagerly and unknowingly spray the grape variety grown in France?
You will also need to plant them in a region relatively free of predators and can grow them on a hill where there are several grape cultivars and one of the most important things first.Almost ninety percent of the most practical reason why concord grape growing for an ideal site for getting a great ability to endure colder weathers, while higher trellises maximize sunlight exposure in warm climates. So make it flourish to its silky texture and wide enough to support your grapevines as it grows. They are made with grapes grown in nearly every wine producing characteristics of the first few years; if they will be useless later on.Once you have determined exactly where you want to know.

Grape Vine Planting Density
Remember, the best wines all over the world beginning to rot, meaning that your variety of grape growing industry.Grape vines have taken roots and vines than in year one, or even human scents that can be done at exactly the right climate for growing grapes and their pitching should follow the grape vines have a right kind for your vineyards accessible.Hardpans are compacted and act like cement. You need to water the soil plays a critical role in the middle of a tradition dating back to the warm, humid conditions can sometimes mean that grapes want a large farm or grape garden, you will begin to turn from green to yellow. Some of the idea, but Ernie did not fertilize will just need the right way is to not be necessary.
This setup will likely be grape berry moths, leafhoppers, rose chafers, and Japanese beetles. You also need to see the sunburn damage or if you don't prune, you will find everything that lives under the name suggests, vineyard grapes plays an important growing tool success for you to tackle. As the vines grow big and heavier, your need to cultivate your soil prior to deciding to go the route of a concord grape can be hard. For those wanting to make or break the production of sizable grape crops.Around 80-90% of the fact that there are several activities that you need to know the do's and don'ts, your chance for a trellis made of concrete for it is not that proper for growing a resounding success for you personally, because you have organic compost, adding a plant to grow upwards on its preferences for living conditions.

An unasked for and continued review of every Power Rangers Episode E can get a hold of Pt. 2
The following is a non-professional review of the Power Rangers Series starting from Mighty Morphin and working our way forward. This review Covers Episode 6-10. Note there will be spoilers.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 6: Food Fight.
Our intrepid young goody goodies are running a cultural food fair. Which gets quickly ruined by Bulk and Skull and their antics. How these two don’t get suspended or expelled is beyond me. Might be a weird luck stat? Regardless. Rita is not feeling so well and decides to use one of Finsters not so stellar monsters for the job of eating everything.
Things look like they’re going to Rita’s benefit until the rangers figure out that porky can’t handle a bit of heat. Rangers get their weapons back and bacon out of the nefarious ham.
Fun: 5 out of 5
Weird monster design: 3 out of 5
Now I’m hungry: 4 out of 5.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 7: Big Sisters.
Trini and Kimberly Volunteered to be Big Sisters for the Rambunctious Maria for a day. Meanwhile Aunt Rita Repulsa needs a child like Maria for her own plans. To get passed a barrier and get a couple of Power Eggs to gain the power to defeat the power rangers...
*Looks at the script.*
No....that’s what it says... I mean Eggs are full of protein so it tracks but the barrier requiring the touch of an innocent child to open it and the definition of innocent child make little sense to me. Who designs this magic?
Anyway putty patrollers kidnap Maria and get her to open the box while also probably traumatizing the kid with the ugly chicken monster of the week.
Rangers can’t reach communication with alpha and Zordon or even teleport so they instead take Billy’s RADBUG which is an acronym but we’re not going to go into that because it is a supped up Volkswagon beetle. So they take the car and go to the command center and go to save Maria using the radbug. They fight funky chicken for a bit before frying him once and for all with the Megazord.
Maria is saved and Rita has a headache, and the episode ends with Bulk getting doused in Veggie Chilli. Hold up, why is he getting slapsticked on? He’s been on good behaviour. Bulk was just minding his own business for this entire episode....what? Oh, karma for last episode. That makes sense, anyways.
Fun: 3 out of 5
Bad kid voice acting: 4 out of 5.
Com and teleportation outages: 0 out of 5 because they suck.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 8: I, eye guy.
This is another episode featuring a kid of the week, Willy and his VR game he made, which really just looks like face mounted displays showing video footage of a roller coaster ride. Anyway with the help of billy the kid is entering the science fair competition. Meanwhile ol’ Aunt Rita Repulsa has a new evil plan to kidnap the kid and steal his intelligence for her own?
*Looks at notes.*
So what is she going to use him to create games to win the hearts of the masses and then take over the world legally? Oh nope the monster just saps the kid after absorbing them.
*Looks at notes again.* Hold on I think I need to call the FBI on Rita Repulsa.
Anyway before getting the monster out, Rita has some putties sent down to try and take the kid, worked last time. Well this time it didn’t and the rangers beat the clay faced goons and got Willy to the science fair.
Look before I continue can I just say that whoever wrote the script has no idea about computer electronics. I feel the urge to lambaste them for the term Quasitronic circuitry. I’m willing to let the Radbug slide and all the other ranger tech, but now I’m drawing the line.
Tumblr media
And bring in another round of bulk and skull antics as they come to cause havoc and because of these bozos and their antics, WIlly gets disqualified.. Okay so this is what I call plot contrived BS. Willy didn’t even touch those 2 yet the professor decided that since Willy was one of the many people laughing as Bulk and Skull ran after their fashion makeover that he must have been the culprit?
Okay a distraction.before I unleash a world breaker move but can we say that the lady with the funky fashion makeover machine has a brilliant concept going? A machine that can help you change your clothes would be very useful for the disabled or people with limited mobility.
So after the idiot professor denies Willy what he deserves, he’s kidnapped by eye guy and...
jeepers creepers where’d you get those peepers, jeepers creepers where’d you get those eyes... where’d you get those eyes.Sorry had to.
Anyway inside the eyes of eye guy Willy is stuck on a gyroscope and to protect himself eye guy keeps his main separate so the rangers team finisher has no effect on him.
Billy goes to save Willy, Rita super sizes eye guy making him more of an eye sore than he was before, Megazord finishes the monster and Willy is saved and the professor gives Willy’s invention first prize. Thus ends another episode.
Fun: 4 out of 5
Eyes: Too many
Strict professor: Only 1.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 9: For Whom the Bell Trolls.
Hmmm.....a episode with a bunch of dolls....don’t like that. One of them is going to get possessed by Rita’s machinations isn’t it? Don’t like any of this.
So it’s Hobby Week at Angel Grove High and the main five showcase their hobbies/interests. Trini it’s dolls, Jason it’s martial arts, Zack it’s surfing, Kimberly Gymnasitcs, and Billy it’s a Model.....volcano? Anyway afterwards Bulk and Skull because clearly these two never got enough attention as kids try to pick on Trini and her dolls doing the whole keep away thing only for Bulk to get gooped by the Volcano.
I’m certain it’s non-toxic, right Billy?.... Billy?
Anyway we see Trini’s house and her room.... and all the pretty dolls she has.
Tumblr media
Look, I’ll be Frank and I’m not Frank I’m E...but I find something unnerving about some dolls. I like them better than Horses but still.
So Rita sends....what’s his name....squatt? Yep, that’s him. Sends him down to turn Ticklesneezer into the monster of the week. This is a kids show so i’m going to let this plan slide to see where it’s going here.
Oh so she’s going to have him collect things....like a motorcycle, tokyo tower, Trini and BIlly in a car. Okay this plan is already pretty effective I’m surprised.
Meanwhile the others are at the youth center doing a bit of sparring before Jason showcases his martial arts skills by the age old trick of breaking wood.
We also get more bulk and skull antics...with bulk hurting his hand on a cake.
The squad get called in by Zordon to go save Trini and Billy fighting their way through the ever novel Putty squad and Baboo, Squat, and Goldar.
Kimberly saves Mini Trini and Billy from their bottle and from a Train. Hold on giving Kimberly another gold star for good work. And Rita Repulsa makes Ticklesneezer grow as she does with all her monsters.
And we see a Giant asian kid with the Megazord as the rangers attempt to bottle rita and her group. Errors in stock footage....and it turns out it was all a dream....oh okay so it makes more sense for their to be a giant kid there.
We close out the episode with one more instance of Bulk and Skull and their.....flea circus? Okay that’s actually kind of wholesome for a couple bullies....and the teacher ends up getting flea bitten...... instead of those two getting the slapstick over the head...well surprising.
Fun:5 out of 5
Dolls: Creepy
Reality: Questionable.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 10: Happy Birthday Zack.
*Puts on a party hat.*
Cake-o-matic, looks like an old toaster oven mixed with a couple filters and two blenders. But who am I to question genius. *Watches Ernie get covered with blue cake foam.* Who am I to question Gremlins.
So the rangers are preparing a surprise party for Zack and Rita is preparing a “Killer” surprise for Zack as well. Ernie is also pretty close to the truth regarding the rangers.....except obviously the Rangers are interdimensional beings....OBVIOUSLY, didn’t hear it from me though.
And Bulk and Skull show up. What are they doing out so late? Also shouldn’t the door be locked, isn’t this trespassing? Ernie gave the kids permission but not them. I’m terribly confused.
Anyway Bulk and Skull make complete fools of themselves while Rita is demanding progress reports regarding the monster of the week. Finster seems kind of annoyed. Already has the monster decided and everything. Dude needs a night off, go have some drinks. Look I know a place near the pits of evil. Nastiest drinks and nastier company but it’s a good time. Call me Finster we’ll hang.
Anyway the kids finish prep and work on keeping Zack in the dark, and in the dark of night we see Finster and Baboo proving that they could really go into the renfaire business as they work on a nasty sword that can cut through just about anything in the known universe. Well except the bonds of friendship and love but those don’t count. Rita summons her nasty knight on this nasty night and the games afoot.
Anyway the kids are trying to act cool for the surprise party, to mixed results which will obviously just make Zack hurt and distracted him from his fight against the Nasty Knight as Zack loses and dies and the Rangers are defeated and Rita wins. Game Over.......
....NAH! The rangers get to Zack and they’re still not beating this guy...huh....not even the Megazord is doing anything...well until they figure out the schict of the situation and break the nasty sword and the knight with the power sword thus ending plan.....10 of Rita’s. The kids then go to the youth center and celebrate Zack’s birthday.
Fun: 5 out of 5
Knights: Out.
Cake: 0 out of 5 it’s undercooked and way to foamy.
Anyway this concludes part 2 of this long and grueling review of every power rangers episode I can get a hold of and affront to professional reviews to the series as a whole. Bah I’m having fun and that’s all that matters.
Anyway stay tuned to more of this nonsense.

Some Bar, Some Where.
The music had a heavy beat to it, interspersed with a sultry tone’s of a woman’s voice caught amid its gears. The voice wasn’t in Anglos, nor Russian Trade or any one of the Asian quazi-dialects that had melded together when the floods came. It could have been Japanese J-pop, or New Korean NJ-rattle, or some other consonant with a ‘pop/sizzle/whatever’ added to the end. It could have been a classical piece murdered by a Dumb AI algorithm programmed to make music that people want to move with, or get away from with delicious alcohol. The fact reminded the music was loud, the bass turned up to the point of worrying anyone with dental work, and it hid the murmur of voices and deals being wrought by those not inebriated beyond reason. Of course the poor lighting, at least the glow panels designed not to strobe with nerve stuttering flashes, couldn’t disguise the low quality of the booze provided to the patrons of ‘Nexus’. The chances of the glass before him coming into spitting distance of barly hops, or any form of natural fermentation, were next to zero. But when you were out here on far edge of The Limb, you took what you could get. Still didn’t make the swill taste any better, but booze was booze. He now felt somewhat better about himself, the engineered fluid alighting across his brains neural chemistry to release a raft of endorphins. He missed real, honest to God, brewed in a barrel, alchaol. Good, honest, mind numbing alcohol added in by nature and not as a feature. He personally blamed the current state of the Union, the worlds spanning conglomerate of nation states all braying for their slice of the action. The Union taxed every gram of matter lifted off of the surface of a world, and taxed coded it for a destination with varying degree's of severity. At this distance from Scotland, Earth, Sol System Relay...a bottle of single malted goodness would be worth more than his life. Ship included. But hey, if he waited long enough maybe the Union would fizzle out? From United Polity before the Burst, and then it became the Unified Polities of Near Earth Space after the Burst, and now it was the Union of National Polities. UP, UPNES, UNP: that was a lot of hull designations to scrub off the nose cone of any ship. At least they kept the paint scheme roughly the same across the century and a half since mankind had burst free of planet Earth. This made ‘Polity Blue’ the cheapest per gallon across the Union and its neighbours to G-North and G-East. But that might also explain the amount of independent merchant skippers who just can’t find the dollars to pay for a paint job, and go out into the black with bare metal to the stars. “You said you had something for me?” The drinker said after a moment’s contemplation over his drink. Yavik Valentine rose from where he’d been slouching in his chair, his dreads flickering in sympathy to the strobes, and focused all four of his eyes on him. Oh don’t worry, Yavik won’t bite your hand off or anything like that. But its so easy to stereotype genies into their respective chimeric categories, that most folks just avoided registering the tiny black pupils set into recessed sockets above his brows. Somewhere in his genetic past some egg head from Earth, or that freak show Venus turned into, had thought hominid DNA and a dash of spider would be a great benefit to the species. A lot of ‘brilliant ideas’ had been made in those dark days, before Venus was intentionally nuked back into a furnace of radioactive particulates by Union sanction: Earth didn’t need a terraformed Hell a few light minutes away. But the fire hand't arrived fast enough before a new niche species of humanity had arisen: the genies. Genetically modified hominid gene stock with animal traits. Most live normal lives, and for the most part you‘d never spot them unless you went looking for them. But then you get examples like Yavik with his four eyes, or that NK-pop sensation Karim-2/40. She could well be living proof that bad girls don’t always change their spots, but when the fur grows out you might need to shave them. In Yaviks case what you ended up with was a scheming masterpiece of a baseline human with some odd optical genetics, twitchy reflexes that made them neurotic as hell, and Velcro like hooks protruding from their skin instead of follicles. This usually made T’antula genies cover up more than a nun in a nudist camp, and more often than not usually ended up with them working in the industries aligning with the production of medicinal canaboids. Well something had to help the grippy freak mellow out. Yavik ran a gloved hand through his dreads, a little pulse of blue light shimmying along them as he did so. “Might do, might do.” He said slowly through a mouth filled with close knit narrow teeth, his eyes still looking deeply into the face of his companion. “Course what I have, as a business man, don’t come free ya see? Ya wanna see what I got, ya gotta pay up front.” “Interesting sales pitch seeing as I got the call from you to meet you in this dive.” The drinker retorted gently, taking another sip of his drink and wincing: coudn't his taste buds take the hint and die already? “I stand corrected: a dive would have better swill than this.” “Hey man, hey!” Yavik cooed, as he slowly sank back into his chair “That's the finest glitter gin this side of the Limb, you treat that with re-spect.” The drinker hated it when people put extra definition on their syllables. If this turned into a paying job, something worthwhile, his rate was going to go up just for that. He gently pushed the drink, now identified as glitter gin, across to Yavik. The T’antula took a single look at the gesture, and almost dived across the table to grab it. The drinker might be a expert of boozes and rot guts, but he was all for drinks that didn’t make you blind when they got to your optic nerve and made you see things. “There, you happy now? Can we do business?” he asked, as Yavik hungrily licked the rim of the glass, his four heavy lidded eyes overflowing with pleasure. The genie merely nodded slowly, reached into his jacket and extracted a battered PassPort from within. As the jacket slid open, the drinker took a second to admire the interior lining for all the latest accessories that were all the rage this season. No guns. No gas. No knives. Maybe this was on the up and up? “Yeah man, yeah,” Yavik sighed contently as he barely held himself upright in his chair and slid the PassPort over the table top. “Yeah we can do business. PassPort’s name is Oronoco, ask the little lady that which you wanna know man.” The drinker eyed the PassPort, before gently flipping it open to reveal the complex gold and platinum design carved into the interior. As quantum computers went, PassPorts were on the low end of the scale. But given all QuantComps are parallel processing super geniuses to begin with, even the ones on the low end of the totem pole ended up being insufferable know it all’s. He placed a hand gently over the gold etching on the PassPort, and allowed his left eye to close. But instead of utter blackness, or the simple loss of depth perception, a woman appeared as his implant mugged his optical nerve in a dark alley. And as soon as he saw the beige coloured uniform, equipped naturally with beige coloured beret, with the cyan blue shoulder boards with that single white tassel braid, the drinker knew he was in trouble. “Implant tag identified: Lieutenant Commander Damien Kitcher. Union Navy ID 33K56-A2. Status: Deserter.” The woman, or more precisely the generated self image of a genderless computer spark, had a trio of seconds to state that name and rank before he yanked his hand free of the PassPort. His eye snapped open, closing off the connection between the PassPort and his optic implant. That didn’t in any way change the intensity of his glare at the laconic drunk on the other side of the table. “Sorry man,” Yavik said with an easy grin, his sense of self preservation already checking out of Motel Lights Out. “Lady paid first, and Union dollars are pretty sweet.” In a split second Yaviks fate was decided: Kitcher didn’t have the time to give the T’antula the proper beating he rightly deserved. His time was now rapidly running out, and the damn NK-rattle music wasn’t doing him any favours. He stood up, watching as the glass of glitter gin soared into the air as his leg struck the plastic table top. He glanced towards the clubs entrance. And right into the smooth armoured faceplate of a Union marine. The troopers armoured carapace shimmered from full active camouflage into something more solid and imposing, looking nothing unlike a cobalt blue human shaped beetle, with semi automatic death on its mind. His eyes flicked from left to right, and caught sight of the similar fuzzy blobs marring his vision: the one at the door was for show, the others scattered around the room were the hazards. They’d be the ones with fingers on triggers, the ones with orders to shoot first and ask question at some predetermined point in time after his blood had cooled to room temperature. So instead of leaping for the exit, of making a break for the service door behind the bar, or even in using Yavik as a human-ish shield, Kitcher slipped back into his seat with a growl. “You’re a dead man.” Kitcher said through tightly pressed together lips, as more of the Union troopers flickered into being. They began to usher the crowd out, using their armours echo assist to basically toss the free floating revellers up towards the entrance portal to Nexus and out into street. The music hid the screams and shouts, but one look at the soldiers made people realign their priorities. “Might be, might not be.” Yavik said lazily before he slowly pushed up from his seat, leaning over slightly “Then again maybe I ain’t the one to be a dead man shortly? I’m just gonna skip out, seeing as this part of the meeting ain’t mine.” “No, it’s mine.” Came a thin, reedy voice that matched the figure of a older man that slipped into Yaviks chair the moment he left it. Tall, almost deathly pale in skin colour, his morticians complexion complimented the funeral suit of midnight black with its high choking collar. The skin over his bald skull was pulled tight, giving his small eyes a constant surprised look. But it was the opal blue eyes, to bright by half, that gave him way: ManKin. Or to put it bluntly, in the parlance of the 20th century, a robot. And ManKin liked working with numbers, problems, and the horrendous political orrery of the Union. Add in the marine guard, and his presence in non Union territory, meant the man in black was working for only one organisation. “Clockwork.” Kitcher said bluntly, looking at the man as a thin smile spread across his lips. He nodded at the still open PassPort. “She one of yours as well?” “Oronoco?” the pale man asked with a slight nod. “In a way. Like any good Union citizen, even a artificial one, she is serving her Polity with national service. Quite diligently so, I hasten to add. Maybe she, like myself and others, will find her higher calling within the Union Navy? Who knows? But as I am sure you know, Mr Kitcher, service can be a harsh mistress. But it is a mistress that holds our freedom hostage until she is done with us.” The ManKin reached out and closed the PassPort. “And that mistress is not finished with you, Mr Kitcher.” Those opal eyes flicked to one side, distracted by some tidbit of information provided to him. Kitchen hated when machine's traded to ape human behaviour, It could be having a half dozen conversations and solving pi without appreciable lag in the conversation. “So you’ve come all this way to get me back in the grey and blue,” Kitcher said with a smile on his face. “I’m thrilled my tax dollars are paying for this will punt out to the edge of the Limb. Didn't know Charlamains Rock was on the approved travel list?” “Oh those tax dollar’s paid for a rather limited manhunt, after all the Union Navy has boarders to protect, worlds to police-” “Uprisings to smash, colonies to manhandle with gunboat diplomacy?” Kitcher finished. “In either case, we have found you. And I have been given full discretion by Earth to provide summary judgement upon your case.” The ManKin smiled, as out of the corner of Kitchers eye, two of the marines drifted down from the clubs upper dance volume. Full body armour, echo assist strength amplification, and what looked like a newer model of the Heckler & Kosh solid state laser rifle. They looked ready to take on a army singlehandedly, and sometimes that had been the case. “So...re-enlistment? Do I get back pay?” Kitcher asked, wishing he still had a drink before him. "At a Lt's wage bracket that could get pricey." “Permanent, non reversible neurological death.” The ManKin intoned darkly, his eyes narrowing down to azure slits as the two troopers brought their H&K’s up and levelled them at Kitcher’s head. The two dots of painted laser light now attached to his skull didn’t hurt, but should the troopers squeeze their firing studs he’d have a very interesting though pass right through his head before the end. The ManKin smiled. “Of course that is my choice, and it just so happens it is a choice I do not want to make yet.” The ManKin smiled and tapped the PassPort again. “I really did expend a lot of resource to find you Mr Kitcher, to offer you a job. Its rewards will see you free of Union complications for the remainder of your life, and you’ll be able to return to Union space. Its been a while since you’ve been home to Midowin colony Mr Kitcher, away from your family. I understand the Midowin culture prizes community and family, if I recall correctly?” The ManKin raised a hand, and if it were possible the two marines stances became more taunt and threaded with a delicate sense of impending violence. “Of course, if you choose not to listen to my job offer...” “I get it,” Kitcher growled and nodded to the artificial person. “Looks like you got yourself a ship and a captain.”

Spring Garden and Lawn Maintenance
The weather in early spring is notoriously unpredictable in the Northeast. Sunny one day, a cold rain the next, even a last-gasp snow shower is not a rare occurrence. But for home gardeners, early spring is the perfect time to “get in the dirt” and tackle their garden and lawn maintenance activities.
Here are the top spring garden and lawn maintenance tips as your yard wakes up for the upcoming growing season:
Clean Up Lawns and Garden Beds
Over the winter months, yards become filled with broken sticks, wet leaves and even litter trapped under the winter snow. March is the time to clear out all that debris from your garden and lawn areas and take away any dead grass to prevent smothering the coming new growth.
Prune Any Damaged Branches
If your trees or shrubs have branches damaged from the winter, now is the time to prune them back to live stems. During your March garden and lawn maintenance, inspect trees and shrubs and prune any broken branches using a hand pruner or a handsaw for branches larger than ½ inch in diameter. For fruit trees, make certain that you finish pruning before the buds swell. Roses can also be pruned now.
Fertilize with the Proper Product
The month of March is the time to think about fertilizer as part of your garden and lawn maintenance activities, especially if your turf is lacking dark green color or is thin. During the winter months, grass and plantings have been missing out on essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and iron. So for strong roots and healthy new growth, you can apply a light, slow-release or organic type fertilizer that won’t burn your lawn. An easy application of fertilizer this time of year will really get your lawn off to a good start. Consult with a landscape professional for assistance in choosing the best types of fertilizer.
Be Aware of Aggressive Weeds
Although March brings new growth to your garden, it also brings lots of weeds. Now is the time to start pulling out weeds, or cultivating them out while the weeds are still young. If you let weeds go to seed, you can be in for a real fight later. Crabgrass and other aggressive weeds typically invade your lawn at the start of warm weather. Crabgrass begins to germinate when the soil temperature reaches 58 degrees Fahrenheit, and this weed can take over quickly. During your maintenance activities, you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent these aggressive weeds from invasion.
Inspect for Signs of Insects and Pests
As the weather gets warmer, look out for overwintering insects, such as boxelder bugs and Asian lady beetles, and other outdoor pests emerging into your lawn and garden. These pests love to prey on fresh, new growth. In March, talk to a landscape professional about proper pest control and an Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM)that focuses on organic lawn care.
Don’t Forget to Take Care of Your Mower
Finally, if you do your own mowing, March maintenance should include your lawn mower. Taking care of this tool early in the season is critical. Dull mower blades tear up the grass, so make sure they’re sharpened ahead of time. And if your mower needs to be serviced, do it now and beat the rush of other gardeners later in the season.
Whether you require assistance with your spring garden and lawn maintenance or you need season-long care, Borst Landscape and Design has the professionals, expertise and services to fit all your landscaping needs in Northern New Jersey. Contact Borst here.

Great Tips to Grow Lemongrass
youtube
By Dr. Mercola
Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as lemongrass, is an herb noted for its distinctive lemon flavor and citrus aroma. Lemongrass may be grown as a perennial in zones 10 to 11. In these climates lowest temperatures reach approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter.1 In cooler areas lemongrass is grown as an annual, but may be planted in a pot and brought indoors in the winter months.
The herb is among the most popular of essential oils and is native to tropical countries such as India, China and Thailand, where it is a favorite flavoring in foods, drinks and desserts.2 The plant has also been used traditionally for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. A common theory attributes the success of lemongrass essential oil in part to the citronella essential oil display at the World's Fair in 1951.
Lemongrass was initially introduced to warm regions in the United States, but can be grown throughout the country as an annual plant. In food and beverages it is often used for flavoring, and in manufacturing lemongrass may be added as a fragrance to soaps and cosmetics. You can take advantage of the many health benefits associated with this flavorful plant by including it in your garden during the summer and even bringing it indoors in the winter.
Lemongrass Grows Indoors and Out
Lemongrass is easy to start and root as demonstrated in the featured video. Although you can purchase the plants at your local gardening shop, it's also easy to start your own from lemongrass purchased at the grocery store. The plant does best when started in early spring.3 As demonstrated in the video, locate the lower half of the plant and trim approximately 6 inches above this point. The top half can be used dried in tea or in your compost pile while the bottom half is placed in approximately 3 inches of water.
Once you've trimmed the number of stalks you wish to start, add just a dash of cinnamon as a root starter and place the cup in a sunny window. Change the water every couple of days to prevent the growth of fungus4 and wait patiently for the roots and leaves to start growing. It may take between three and four weeks before the plant will be ready to be anchored in the ground or planted in a pot. Once the leaves begin to pop out of the stem, you may want to add some liquid fertilizer to give the plant nutrients.
Consider making your own by using grass clippings and weeds from your yard if you don’t use pesticide treatments.5 Using a 5-gallon bucket, fill it two-thirds of the way with fresh grass clippings and some organic banana peels.
Add water and let it steep for three days, stirring several times throughout the day. Strain out the solid pieces and mix what's left with equal parts of water in a 1-to-1 ratio. Add several drops of this mixture to your lemongrass starter plants. Consider using the remaining natural fertilizer on your indoor and outdoor plants.
Lemongrass prefers full sun and appreciates rich and loamy soil. The plant requires regular watering depending upon the type of soil in your garden. Looser soils will require more frequent watering but loam soil will retain moisture longer and won't need to be irrigated as frequently.6 By sticking your finger in the soil you'll be able to tell how dry it is and how often you might need to water. Adding a thick layer of organic mulch will enhance water retention and slowly add nutrients into the soil as the mulch degrades.
When your plants have plenty of sun, water and fertilizer, they may grow as high as 6 feet and 4 feet wide, depending upon your variety. It's a good idea to keep them pruned at a manageable size to encourage new growth and to allow all the leaves to receive sunlight.7
The best time to trim is early spring, but as the plant is very forgiving it may be pruned during the summer months if growth has gotten out of control. If your lemongrass is a perennial plant in your garden, wait until spring before pruning as the plant is dormant in the winter. Although it may look extreme to cut off all the brown leaves with the initial pruning, it won't be long before fresh green growth takes its place.
Don’t Let Fungus Claim Your Plants
Fungus is the most common disease found in lemongrass. Early blight, late blight and rust are caused by fungus, coloring the foliage and potentially resulting in plant death.8 Fungus survives over the winter in plant debris and weeds, so it's important to remove debris from around your plants and cover well with organic mulch before winter. Early blight causes brown concentric rings, while late blight causes greasy, greenish, black spots to develop on the lower leaves. Rust disease causes rust colored spots on the foliage and stems.
The best management for fungal disease is to promote vigorous growth by using mulches and organic fertilizers to stimulate growth, while pruning out diseased areas.9 Severe infection may result in the death of the entire plant. Rust spores are able to survive on the ground, then spread by the wind, rain and water splashing. Avoid overhead irrigation whenever possible to reduce the spread of fungal disease.10 The most common times the disease is spread is during high rainfall, high humidity and warm temperatures.11
Lemongrass may also be attacked by aphids, spider mites and whiteflies. Aphids are small, sucking insects that feed on the underside of the leaves and leave a sticky residue on the foliage12 that attracts ants. Spider mites are tiny spider-like pests the size of a grain of pepper. These insects inject toxins into the foliage resulting in small white dots. You may also find webbing on the plants. They multiply quickly and thrive in dry conditions.
Spider mites and aphids may be controlled using a forceful spray of water and dish soap every other day.13 Whiteflies are small, white flying insects you may observe rising in a cloud when the plant is disturbed or brushed. Although they don’t leave marks, they weaken the plant with constant feeding.14
Whiteflies may leave a sticky substance on the underside of the leaves, attracting ants and causing greater damage to the plant. Whiteflies may be controlled with lacewing larvae or lady beetles attracted by flowers planted in the vicinity. Many strains of whiteflies are resistant to pesticides, but their predators are not. You may accidentally kill beneficial insects and leave a strong growth of whiteflies if you attempt to use pesticides. Consider trying:15
Aluminum reflective mulch as it makes it difficult for the insect to find host plants.
Yellow sticky traps to monitor and collect whiteflies. Make your own using a 1-to-1 ratio of petroleum jelly and dishwashing soap spread over small bright yellow boards.
A small vacuum is the best way to remove flies, nymphs and larvae from the plants.
Plant, Divide and Eat!
Lemongrass contains citronella, an oil with pest repelling properties.16 Plantings along your patio are an excellent way to naturally repel mosquitoes. You may also try snapping off a leaf or two and cover your skin with the natural oils directly from the plant to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Test a small area of your skin first to ensure you aren't sensitive to the oil.
While beautiful in your garden, lemongrass also offers benefits to companion plants.17 Herb containers or close plantings in the garden may include cilantro, basil, echinacea and thyme. Each of these herbs enjoy the same full sun and water requirements. Lemongrass may also be visually appealing among your tomatoes, peppers and tomatillos, which also prefer the same growing conditions.
As the name implies, lemongrass is a member of the grass family, and as such grows quickly each successive year.18 Potted plants will especially need to be divided each year so they don’t outgrow their pot. When dividing your plants, ensure they have at least 1 inch of root attached so you are able to anchor the plant directly into the soil. Before dividing plants, cut the foliage to 2 inches above the ground to ensure better management.19
It is easiest to dig the plants up with a shovel and divide it into 6-inch sections. You can plant these divisions 3 feet apart in the ground, allowing for vigorous growth as the grasses expand. Harvesting is simple and can pretty much be done anytime throughout the growing season. The edible part of the plant is nearest the bottom of the stalk, which is where you'll want to snap or cut the lemongrass. Look for stalks between a quarter-inch and half-inch thick and cut as close to the root as possible.20
After harvest, remove and throw out the woody portion of the stalk.21 The foliage can be dried and used for teas and soups. You may wish to cook the stalk slightly and then crush the woody portion to get to the edible tender part inside. Harvest as much of the plant as possible prior to winter and consider freezing what you don’t use immediately.
Fresh lemongrass will last in the refrigerator for up to two weeks when it's wrapped in a damp paper towel. Although you may pick lemongrass to be used right away, in the fall you may choose to freeze some plants to use during the winter months. To freeze, wash it, trim it and then chop it up. It can be frozen immediately in a small amount of water in ice cube trays and then transferred to a tempered glass jar designed for your freezer.22
Benefits of Lemongrass in Cooking and Oils
As with many herbs, there are a significant number of health benefits to using lemongrass. Traditionally, lemongrass has been used to treat stomach aches, high blood pressure, common cold, convulsions, pain and vomiting.23 The plant confers a strong lemon flavor to food and is often used in Indian and Asian cooking as well as tea.
The refreshing scent also makes lemongrass a valuable aroma therapeutic oil. The scent is clean and calming and helps relieve stress, anxiety, irritability and insomnia.24 Lemongrass essential oil may also help relax and tone your muscles as well as relieve muscle pain, period cramps and headaches. Other benefits to the oil include:
Energizing foot massage or soak
Perk up tired feet with a foot soak using two drops of lemongrass essential oil with 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a bowl of warm water.25 Create your own foot massage oil with 1 ounce of diluted lemongrass oil, 1 ounce of sweet almond oil, one drop pure geranium oil and two drops of pure sandalwood essential oil. Store in a dark bottle in a cool, dry place.
Antibacterial
Lemongrass essential oil has anti-biofilm properties against staphylococcus aureus26 and interrupts the growth of bacteria in the body.27
Gastrointestinal
Lemongrass has demonstrated effects against E. coli28 and H. pylori,29 the latter of which is responsible for the formation of stomach ulcers. It has also demonstrated effectiveness in stimulating digestion and regulating bowel function.30
Sleep
Sedative and hypnotic properties of the plant may increase duration of your sleep.31 Consider a cup of lemongrass tea before bed.
Analgesic
Pain killing properties of the essential oil and tea make it useful in the treatment of headaches, muscle and joint pain, muscle spasms and sprains.
Blood glucose
The citral present in lemongrass has demonstrated ability to regulate blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity.32 However, using the oil may also lead to lowered blood glucose, and may have contraindications for people taking oral diabetes or antihypertensive medications, as well as those who are diabetic and hypoglycemic.
Take special precautions if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or hypoglycemia or if anyone in your family suffers these conditions.
Hair health
If you’re struggling with oily hair, but would still like your hair shiny and manageable, try adding a few drops of diluted essential oil to your scalp and rinse.33
Body odor
Lemongrass has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, making a diluted form of the essential oil a natural deodorant.
Safety Precautions Using Lemongrass Oil Infusions
Lemongrass essential oil is made using steam distillation, but if you have lemongrass growing in your backyard, you can make an oil infusion using another carrier oil. Find a simple recipe for this in my previous article, “Lemongrass Oil Can Lighten Up Your Mood and More.”
While the oil is considered generally safe when used in small quantities and properly blended with a carrier oil, undiluted oil may actually burn or injure your skin as it has a high citral content. I advise doing a patch test before applying lemongrass oil to your skin to see if you have any adverse reactions to the essential oil. Ingestion of herbal tea may also result in an allergic reaction.
It is always advisable to keep any essential oils out of the reach of children. I do not recommend using lemongrass oil on children, during pregnancy, if you are trying to conceive, or are breastfeeding. Those with liver or kidney disease and other health conditions should also consult their physician before using lemongrass essential oil or infusion.

Ask a Vet: Ladybugs or Asian Lady Beetles in a Dog’s Mouth? What to Know
Ladybugs in a dog’s mouth? First, know that it absolutely is possible for insects to embed in a dog’s mouth. I have seen it many times, when debilitated dogs with dental abscesses or tumors suffered fly strike, leading to severe oral maggot infestations. I’ve also seen plenty of ant-infested mouths. But the insects embedded in your dog’s mouth only look like ladybugs. They’re likely Asian lady beetles. Asian lady beetles are not native to the USA, but they, too, have become quite common. Unlike native ladybugs, Asian lady beetles may bite, and they also produce chemicals that are toxic and can cause chemical burns, and when disturbed they release a very foul odor. Sadly, they were introduced to the USA intentionally in an attempt to control aphids; they now are pushing out our benign native ladybugs. I am not aware of any report of North American ladybugs ever embedding in a dog’s mouth, but let’s look at what happens with Asian lady beetles in a dog’s mouth:

Asian lady beetles in a dog’s mouth? Here’s what happens:
This article on Snopes links to and quotes from a paper by Ian Stocks and Derek Lindsey published in 2008. The paper is pretty well known in veterinary circles. It details a case study of a dog who suffered injury to his mouth after Asian lady beetles became embedded in it. Here is the abstract of the paper:
A six-year-old mixed-breed dog presented with severe trauma to the oral mucosa suggestive of chemical burn. Sixteen Harmonia axyridis (Coccinellidae) were removed from the oral cavity, which revealed trauma consistent with chemical burn. The beetles had become embedded in mucosa covering the hard palate and required manual removal. A diagnosis of beetle induced chemical burn was warranted and consistent with the nature of the chemical constituents of H. axyridis hemolymph.
Snopes manages to muddy the waters a bit with its analysis (below), which illustrates that the author does not know the meaning of the words “mucus” and “mucosa.”
First, the research paper identified the bugs as Asian Lady Beetles while many Facebook messages claimed they were common lady bugs. Second, while many Facebook posts claimed that the bugs had embedded themselves into the dog’s mouth, Derek’s paper states that they became embedded (in other words, they got stuck) in a layer of mucus.
Although Snopes, of course, is right on the first count, the beetles were not embedded in mucus. They were embedded in mucosa, which is the name for the soft pink tissue that lines body cavities such as the mouth.
What will Asian lady beetles do to your dog?
So, just how much of a risk do Asian lady beetles pose to your dog? Are the beetles attacking dogs’ mouths when they are sleeping? When they are panting? When they are minding their own business?
Almost certainly not. It is true that veterinarians have reported problems — ranging from mild gastrointestinal upset and ulcers in the mouth to intestinal ulceration, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, and death — from dog and Asian lady beetle interactions. But the beetles aren’t attacking the dogs. It’s the other way around.
The Asian lady beetles in the various photographs circulating on Facebook and Snopes most likely ended up in the dog’s mouths when the dogs tried to eat them. Large masses of Asian lady beetles may be found in structures and dwellings at certain times. Dogs, being dogs, may eat large quantities of them when they find them. Some of the beetles may hang on and become embedded in the mouth when this happens.
The final word on Asian lady beetles and dogs
So the good news is that your dog likely won’t get into trouble with the beetles unless he goes looking for trouble. The bad news, however, is that if he looks for trouble with the beetles he almost certainly will find it.
The Asian lady beetles, as has been mentioned, produce toxic chemicals in their hemolymph (which is a bug’s equivalent to blood). The toxic chemicals can cause chemical burns of the mouth. You can see such burns clearly on the tongue and in the back of the mouth in one of the pictures on the Snopes page.
The chemicals may cause ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract when swallowed. They may cause severe gastrointestinal upset, which in turn can progress to life-threatening hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Dogs who tangle with Asian lady bugs should get a trip to the vet.
To summarize, yes, Asian lady beetles may harm your dog. If he tries to eat them. So don’t let him do that.
