Dr. Victoria. Wanted your approval before I put her into a part AFTER the contest. I see you decided to keep the werewolf legs from this old partial transformation pic you did.  I have to say, I like it.  Different and interesting, likely with a bit of story behind it.
Tumblr media
Also, I love how she looks and I can’t wait to see how you user her in your tale.  I just wonder if she’s still as abnormally tall a Victor..  XD

Fictober 2022 12: You're making my head hurt.
Prompt number: 12. “You’re making my head hurt.”
Original Fiction
Rating: M
Warnings/Tags: Death, Gore, Haunting, vehicle accident, horror story
Old John had seen a lot over his years of long-haul trucking, but the accidents were always the worst. He’d been hauling sheets of steel from Pennsylvania up to Detroit when he’d gotten caught in traffic during rush hour. He decided that he’d fudge the numbers on his swindle sheet a little and drive on through the night so his delivery wouldn’t be late. He just marked down that he’d been parked and sleeping when he’d actually been caught in the traffic jam. Almost four AM on a road in the middle of nowhere he heard one of the restraints start flapping loose. He knew he was going to have to stop and fix it, but there was a rest stop about two miles up the road. He could hold out until then, surely. Then he heard a motorcycle come roaring up behind his truck. He had no idea what in the world they were doing out that late at night, but they were in one hell of a hurry. Dropping into what would have been oncoming traffic, they gunned the engine to pass John’s truck. That was when disaster struck. Another restraint snapped, sending a sheet of steel flipping up into the air from the wind breaking around the cab. He swore he saw it strike the cyclist why went rocketing past him, only to miss a turn and crash into the bushes. Slamming on the brakes, he wrestled the old truck to the edge of the road. As he put it in park the air brakes eased with a loud hiss. Hopping down out of he cab, he called out to the cyclist. He could see the mangled remains of the bike itself wrapped around a tree. Imagine his surprise when the rider pushed himself up off of the ground. He looked a little odd, his helmet sitting so low it looked like it just sat on top of his broad shoulders. He was carrying a second helmet in his hands as he approached. John called out to him, “Hey, sorry about that. Lemme get this load secured and we can gather up your bike and I’ll get you into town, okay?”
His voice a little muffled from the closed visor on his helmet, the rider waves with his free hand. “Yeah, thanks. Say, could you toss this in your truck for me?”
He underhand tossed the helmet to John who tried to catch it. It was a lot heavier than it looked, however and slipped from his hands. His blood ran cold as he looked down to see his hands covered in slick, red blood. The cyclist’s voice came, not from the form standing in the road, but from the helmet on the ground in front of him. “You’re making my head hurt.” Through the broken visor, he could see the dead, empty gaze of the rider’s head. Looking towards the body standing about ten feet away he saw the helmet perched oddly on his shoulders totter and fall away to reveal his ragged neck stump. His arms thrust out in front of him as he ran blindly towards John, who bolted for the cab of his truck! He dove into the cab, slamming and locking the door behind him. Deciding to hell with the load, he turned the key, the engine roaring to life as he heard fists banging on his door. He slammed the rig into gear and took off down the road, scattering more sheet metal in his wake.
He was a good half hour down the road when he heard something that made his blood run cold. “Hey buddy, thanks for the ride.” He turned his head to see the helmet in his now bloodstained passenger seat, the decapitated head peering up at him through that broken visor. He let out a bloodcurdling scream just before his rig slammed through a guardrail and into a tree.

Fictober 2022 06: "Adaptable, I like that."
Prompt number: 6. “Adaptable, I like that.”
Original Fiction
Rating: T
Warnings/Tags: Transformation, Pain, Implied Nudity
Tricia banged on the heavy wooden door with the flat of her palm as she shouted at the top of her lungs, “Edward! Edward you let me out of here right now!” Grumbling to herself, she pressed her ear against the door, trying to hear a response or movement from the other side, anything. “Edward, damn it, I know you can hear me! Open this door!” Still no answer at first, just a faint chuckle was all that gave him away. She was getting angrier and could feel a familiar warm ember building up in her chest. She tried to fight it down, but she knew she couldn’t hold out much longer.
“If you don’t let me out of here, you’re not going to like what happens!”
Just that laughter again, this time ringing in her ears as they became more sensitive. Grinding her teeth, she began pounding on the door with the balls of her fists, her shouting becoming more incoherent as her anger grew. Until finally that ember inside finally ignited. Her chest heaved as she panted, gasping for air. Wincing in pain, she stared at her hands. Her nails slowly lengthened, curling into wicked claws as her fingers stretched out longer and thinner. Her posture changed as she was thrown off-balance. Her feet burst through her shoes in a matter of moments as they extended, lengthening, the toes and ball of the foot growing larger and becoming more paw-like. Her hands battering the door slowly started to strike the wood higher and higher as she continued to change and grow. Her sleeves tightened over swelling biceps, the seams starting to pop and tear as she felt the clasp of her bra snap apart and slide down her back, useless. She cried out in agony, clasping her hands to her face as it slowly pushed out into a long muzzle filled with wickedly sharp teeth. He dress slowly began to split up her hip revealing powerfully muscled thighs being covered in rapidly growing golden fur. The tear didn’t stop, however, it continued to rise until it met another tear caused by her expanding chest, letting the remains of her clothing flutter to the ground. Her head slammed up against the ceiling, causing the now towering werewolf to duck her head a bit and growl in annoyance. Snarling in anger, she stalked back over tot he heavy wooden door. Swiping a hand at it, she ripped a series of four massive gouges in the wood with her claws. She ripped and tore at the wood, digging her way through it before finally slamming her fists against the weakened door and smashing it to pieces, sending chunks of wood flying into the next room.
She sniffed at the air, a growl rumbling deep in her chest. Her voice was gravelly and had dropped several octaves as she snarled out, “Edward, where the hell are you?” She made her way back to the front room, which was now strangely empty, like he had removed all of the furniture from it. He smiled and waved at her as he appeared in the doorway holding some sort of remote control. “Oh Tricia,” he grinned at her, “Adaptable, I like that.”
She let out a roar and charged towards him as he hit the button and stepped back, heavy iron bars dropping from the ceiling in both doorways, trapping the werewolf once more. “Good thing I’m adaptable, too. Now, let’s see how I can go about getting a blood sample while that virus of yours is active for a change...”

Fictober 2022 13: I don't want you to do that.
Prompt number: 13. “I don’t want you to do that.”
Original Fiction
Rating: M
Warnings/Tags: blood, violence, artificial intelligence, mad science,
“Okay Birdy, how do you feel?” He smiled to himself about the nickname he had given the B.D., or Bionic Dry-run project. It was a bit of a mad experiment, piecing all of their various bionic replacement parts together with an artificial intelligence to see If they could create a working robot. “Still a bit off, Dr. Hinks.” Birdy’s voice was still a little unnerving, oddly deep and heavily modulated. He really needed to work on that as soon as the current problem was taken care of. “My battery power still seems to be draining at one-hundred-fifty percent of the projected rate.” “Damn… That means there’s still a short somewhere. I’m afraid I’m going to have to shut you down for a few moments to diagnose the problem again.” Birdie’s mechanical eyes went wide, the disturbingly realistic structures almost seeming to bulge from metallic sockets. “But… I don’t want you to do that.” Dr. Hinks blinked. This was a new development. He reached out to pat the back of the nu-flesh covered robotic hand, leaving the exposed one untouched. “Why not? I’ve done it many times before to diagnose problems, after all.” “I just… I don’t want you to do that.” The creature leans back a little, pulling its hand away from the doctor. “I don’t like the shutdown process, just slowing down as functions are taken away from me. Then it’s like a chunk of time vanishes and I always feel strange when I am started back up! Plus, what if you DON’T start me back up?” “Feel?” The doctor blinked a few times at the choice of words. He certainly hadn’t programmed the AI with the capacity to feel anything, at least not yet. What was going on here? “If you’re feeling off, then that is something even more important to check. You know that I can’t do that while you’re active because I might short something vital out in the process.”
He turned towards the computer to initiate the shutdown process when he was roughly grabbed by the shoulder from behind and hurled to the floor, landing painfully on his hip. “I said I don’t want you to do that.” Birdie had stood up from its stool, wobbling on mismatched legs. Dr. Hinks pushed himself up off of the floor. He decided to not take the attack personally. If his creation really was beginning to develop feelings it would be something he could study from the memory logs when he got Birdie shut down. “Birdie, please. I understand you don’t like it, but everyone has to deal with things they don’t like. I don’t like getting shots or a lot of the exams I go through with my physician, but I go through with them anyway because they keep me healthy.”
The creature stopped for a moment, seeming to consider the doctor’s words.
Dr. Hinks smiles and turns towards the computer once more. “Don’t worry, Birdy. As long as I’m still breathing I will make absolutely sure that you’re in perfect working order.”
Suddenly he felt hands grip his neck from behind. Fingers crushed deep into his trachea, cutting off his air entirely. He could feel fleshy fingers crushing in on one side while cold skeletal fingers of plastic and metal cut into his skin on the other, blood running down the side of his neck. He struggled and pulled, reaching for the computer to shut the creature down. He felt something pop as his vision turned red and began to darken around the edges.
The last thing he ever heard was that deep, modulated voice in his ear. “Dr. Hinks, you’re still breathing. I don’t want you to do that.”

September Feature: A Tribute to Silver Spanner
A couple of years ago, Emperor Bugle logged on to Reddit and posted the solicitation for the first fully online tournament that had ever been run for the MLP CCG. It would be conducted over the course of three weeks, with matches played over Skype and reported back on the thread. Most audacious of all, it would be conducted according to a quirky ruleset that Bugle had come up with himself. He made the commitment that once this tourney had run its course, another would follow, with a completely different quirk on the rules. He called it Silver Spanner’s Deck Building Tournament, the name coming from a pony who by that point in time had a couple of cards to her name, and seemed a tinkerer of a sort.
By the end of October 2019, Silver Spanner will be embarking upon its 30th iteration, and in spite of having fluctuated somewhat in popularity and participation over the course of that time, it’s still going just fine all these years later. Perhaps even more impressively, Bugle has kept to his promise, delivering not only a brand-new and creatively interesting rule set with every tournament, but also nine especially tough rule sets to really test builders’ creativity. #30 of course promises to another doozy like all of them.
Having been witness to the beginning myself, and having enjoyed several of the earlier instances of the tournament, I thought it appropriate to spend an article looking back on the history of Silver Spanner. This turned out to be even more fascinating of a pursuit than I had expected it to be, as it turned out that a history of Silver Spanner is also a history of the community itself. Finally, I had to pay tribute to the tournament using the method that I know best: by compiling the statistics. Join me, if you will, for a walk down memory lane.
Triumphant Beginnings
It may seem strange when put into perspective, but Silver Spanner has now been around for a little more than three full sets. It was the days of Marks in Time when it first got started, and needless to say, back then things were a little different. Harmony format was still the only way to play the game, and what a different game it was. In fact, I think this line from Bugle’s FAQ on the first tournament might present the best perspective:
Q: Okay, well.. what about the Orange Manes? SOme of them seem pretty strong!
A: Limited options. Unfortunately, almost all of Orange’s Manes are good, and it didn’t feel right to have fewer Orange Manes than any other colour, so I made the best judgement call I could at the moment. However, if enough people ask me to replace Luna: Dream Guide with Apple Bloom before tournament starts, I will do so.
So, indeed, it was a different time. Yet, thinking about the cards and the meta alone doesn’t quite capture everything that was special about that point in the community’s history. Another important distinction was that at that point we didn’t have our Discord server to chat in yet. In fact, most of the community discussion was taking place in Skype at that point. That venerable old Skype room played host to the hype around the Marks spoilers at least, and while I don’t remember exactly when the exodus to Discord happened, it was still a long time before I stopped checking Skype to see what was up.
In those days (as today, really) there was already a thriving trade for casual pickup games over the Internet. With all that was happening, it probably isn’t surprising that Bugle felt there could be room in enough people’s lives to support a single game every week. Clearly he wasn’t wrong, as the first iteration of the tournament attracted sixteen participants, enough for a well-seeded bracket in both the Regular and Novice leagues.
And it is with mention of those leagues that our first pieces of history start to come up. For while in that first tournament the Regular league was highlighted by a number of notable names, it’s the Novice League that I found to be the most interesting.
Tumblr media
For some of the names on that list, this was a first humble step in what would eventually turn into a highly successful tenure. For one, woodgazer didn’t spend too much time in the Novice League, and indeed remains one of the most successful Silver Spanner players in the community (more on that at the end). Yet that’s not the most impressive result on this list. I’m looking at /u/ImPancake, who after a few short years would go from Silver Spanner Novice to Continentals Semi-Finalist (and top seed overall) in 2018. Indeed, for many competitors, Silver Spanner was one of the first steps taken on a long road that ended up in physical tournaments and convention playoffs.
The Second Era
When I was going through the various Reddit posts in order to compile the results into a nice neat chart, I was struck by an interesting phenomenon. See, for the first eight tournaments, the player base stayed about the same, fluctuating in size within the group that might be called the Silver Spanner Old Guard. (I was one of those people before surrendering my seat around SS VIII, unable to find the time anymore.) Then, from SS IX to XII, there’s a sudden flurry of new entrants, and some really notable names on that list. Some of them would go on to be pillars of the community, yet here are the first marks they made in online play:
Tumblr media
Silver Spanner X was Hithroc’s first kick at things, aside from his own (just as venerable) weekly draft series. Just as with others before, it didn’t take long for him to climb a little higher. He entered into the Regular League almost immediately after his first stint, and hasn’t looked back, even while participating in every Silver Spanner since then. Come November, he’ll have his first foray into a physical tourney in North America when he comes to Ciderfest 2019, and it will be a journey that all started in Silver Spanner. Other notable names that first show up in this era include anamoy, mrzodo aka Joking Luna, Dratta Arcana, Smithers888, and kluij98, most of whom continue their participation up to the present day.
It was also around this time that one of Silver Spanner’s most consequential pieces of legacy first showed up. After its impressive string of success in holding onto a player base and staying active for what was now nearing a year, the tournament was joined on Reddit by another repeating event, that of course being the Core Constructed or “CoCo” events put on by Commentary is Magic. While CoCo is a very different event from Silver Spanner, aiming for nearly the opposite purpose, it is still undeniable that the earlier tournament blazed the trail, in showing that there was a sufficient online community to allow a repeating online tournament to succeed. Both have held their own in the online space for the community, catering in their own way to the desires of its players.
The Third Era
Nor indeed was the sudden onset of new participants that happened around Silver Spanner IX-XII the last time that was going to happen. It was only a matter of time before there was another changing of the guard of sorts, with a new crop of participants coming in around SS XX. This new freshmen class has been a bit more of a steady trickle than a sudden rush like the start of Era 2, but it too has its share of notable names. People like Fizzban, elfinpen, and Horceye, names that are now commonplace on Discord, getting their start here.
Silver Spanner really has been a chronicle of the growth and development of the online community for the game. The record of its history is the record of the game’s history, and surely it brings up fond memories for everyone who has participated in it up to now. I know that it does for me. So, as promised, in celebration of the upcoming 30th running of the tournament, here are some stats.
Player records up to SS XXVIII
On the linked sheet, I have a couple of statistics tracked, and you’re more than welcome to sort by the various columns to see how you stack up when compared to all of the other players who have played in the tournament. These numbers are pulled from all twenty-eight results posts that Bugle has put up over the years. In addition to the main numbers, I thought that I would give out a few awards of recognition myself, for the few who have earned their fame (or infamy):
Silver’s Best Friends (Most tournaments entered) Woodgazer & KingUtopia (tied at 27)
Most Total Wins Woodgazer (55)
Highest Overall Win % Grand Pause (88%)
Highest Win Differential (+/-) (explanation below) Godot (+26)
Bane of the Scorekeeper (Most Ties) Hithroc (5)
The “+/-” metric above is one that perhaps bears a little explanation. This is a new one that I’m trying out, where each win is worth +1 point, each tie is worth +½ point, and each loss is worth -1 point. Thus to an extent one’s +/- score is the differential between one’s total wins and one’s total losses. This has an advantage over win percentage since players that don’t play a lot of games can’t have a high score. The downside is that if you do play a lot of games, it’s easier to get a high +/- score even if your win rate is only marginal. In this case, Godot’s 60 SS games compares with GP’s 25. Thus even though GP’s overall win rate is higher, the absolute difference between the numbers is higher for Godot. I haven’t yet decided if there is any extra information being offered in the new metric, but I thought I may as well include it here.
In any event, Bugle, the conclusion of this article has to go to you. Thank you for all of the work that you’ve put in to keep Silver Spanner going over the course of these years. It’s served as a convenient vector to get more people into the online community, a great way for veterans to test out their deck building skills, and of course a venue where we all can just revel in some absurdity now and then. Never mind the anticipation over the new set; there’s always been a surprise every month, as we’ve learned whatever the new rules are going to be.
So here’s to 30 Silver Spanners, and here’s to many more!

Celebrating 150 Episodes!
In television, 150 isn’t typically a huge milestone. Historically speaking, 100 used to be the number ideal for syndication, so that’s usually a much more sought after number to measure the success of a series.
But that’s from a network perspective. As a fan, 150 episodes of my favourite show is absolutely something worth celebrating! We’ve come quite a long way, and that’s awesome.
Speaking of which, this time ‘round it’s a Dash episode, featuring the Dash family for the first time ever! Can’t get more awesome than that (unless, of course, you add Scootaloo into the mix).
Rainbow Dash’s Family
Tumblr media
I once did a very long write-up on how awesome the families are in MLP at explaining why a character turned out the way they did. Often times, we don’t even need flashbacks to figure out how the character developed the way they did. It’s just easy to see from the personalities they grew up around.
Depending on the family, you can even see a mix of nature and nurture---both the traits they inherited, and the ones they developed as a result of their environment.
Taking Rainbow for example, we see how she grew to be so egotistical: she was constantly praised from the time she was in diapers for every little thing she did. Plus, her dad seems a bit proud himself, so there might be some heritability there.
But more than that, we also see that even though Rainbow grew to be embarrassed and annoyed by her parents’ over-enthusiasm, that’s ironically where she herself got her passion. Every time we’ve seen her dork out over the Wonderbolts or Daring Do, we now know where she got that from.
And, I really have to applaud the likable balance writer Josh Hamilton struck for all four starring characters here. You can understand everyone.
Rainbow’s parents are over-the-top, but you can see the love and support from a mile away. Rainbow Dash herself snaps at them, but at the same time, you can understand why growing up surrounded by that much coddling would be hard. Scootaloo gets fed up with Rainbow’s unappreciative actions, but (in addition to Rainbow’s shouting being understandably shocking for a kid) she flat out says she would’ve killed for that kind of support growing up.
Everyone is sympathetic, even when they’re misguided or frustrated, and it makes the narrative that much more heartwarming.
On top of that, Rainbow Dash’s parents are both really fun, endearing characters. We’ll mostly remember them for their incredible enthusiasm which provides plenty of great gags and passionate line deliveries, but there’s also little moments that just make them super likable ponies.
The way Bow Hot Hoof lovingly refers to young kids as stuff like “little trotter” and Windy goes out of her way to tell the Wonderbolts they’re all doing great even though she’s so proud of Rainbow specifically. It’s just all really sweet.
And that’s not even the most likable part. The way they immediately treat Scootaloo with kindness, encouraging her even in small ways all throughout the episode, it’s just about the sweetest thing you could ask for.
Tumblr media
Please have these two show up at some point supporting Scootaloo again. Please let this be an on-going thing.
It looks like she’s got some honorary parents to go along with her honorary sister, and the fact that it was her maturity in handling the situation that won the day and mended that family is just... good. This is a pure, good story.
And I have to admit, I was a bit worried from the synopsis. The last Wonderbolts episode centered around Rainbow Dash getting embarrassed became my least favourite in the series. But, they certainly managed to do that story right this time, and I’m certainly glad for it.
Details, Thoughts, and Whatnot
Trying out this format for the smaller stuff I noticed, we’ll see if this works:
That slow progression of Derpy’s eye crossing is adorable (Gif courtesy of nygip on Derpibooru)
Tumblr media
Although, one thing I’d like to point out is that even though it definitely affects her performance, she always at least places in the race
Speaking of, I guess she tried to get corrective surgery as a teenager; when I first saw Where the Apple Lies, I thought the implication was that she got in an accident, but if her eyes were already progressively doing that from when she was a filly, it must’ve been some kind of corrective measure that didn’t work
Also: Soarin is always so happy to place, he’s the sweetest one there (Spitfire never gets first, that’s cool, too, and Lightning’s pissed when she gets dethroned by Dash)
Tumblr media
Nice lighting you got there. Makes the moment of the reveal that much more well-paced
A part of me wonders if Rainbow Dash was named after her dad. If she ever got the nickname Little Bow in the family, or if her dad’s full name is Rainbow Hot Hoof (because it is spelled that way). Just a thought.
I also have to wonder if ‘hot hoof’ is referring to a sports career, or if it’s just one of those vague names that doesn’t really tie into his talent (I find it to be a pretty odd name).
What’s kinda neat is that because Rainbow takes after her mom so much, we have a pretty good guess as to what she’ll look like when she’s older: greyed coat, bags under the eyes. I’m the kind of person who find tiny things like that neat, makes the characters feel more real to me if I know they’re not always going to stay the same age.
Tumblr media
Maybe Bow and this member of the family (who, by the way, was invited to Hearth’s Warming at Twilight’s castle last year) are twin brothers?
He could be a brother, but he seemed significantly older than Dash, so my guess is Uncle
So, it seems like Dash’s parents know she’s “saved Ponyville” but I wonder if Rainbow Dash underplayed some of the bigger events to keep them from going nuts at ceremonies and stuff (like the ceremony they had for defeating Discord, Twilight’s coronation---which they probably would’ve gone to because they seem to be royalists, but if they knew Dash had a part in that...---etc.)
We don’t know if Scootaloo’s parents are neglectful, dead, or just plain rotten, but it’s interesting to have a set of parents on this show that aren’t all that great [even if it’s probably best to keep them off-screen]
They kept it vague enough that you can say your orphan fanfics are canon! You clever writers, you...
“What’s wrong with a little support?” is a heartbreaking line when you remember she’s Dash’s number 1 fan and has been supporting her since they met
I absolutely adored seeing the Wonderbolts not be jerks, like, at all. It was glorious.
In fact, now that they’re past the hazing phase, you kind of even see them being supportive. Fleetfoot tries to tell Dash her parents’ cheering isn’t that bad (before they’re nearly shot out of the sky by fireworks)
Tumblr media
Here’s a tiny insignificant detail that I LOVE: when they’re making the pyramid, they made sure to show you that Applebloom is stronger than Sweetie Belle, which makes perfect sense because of AB’s farm chores
Also, what up, my theory that the mane 6 were born in the equivalent of the 80s (same as the franchise) is alive and well
So, while this milestone may not have been a big one in a lot of people’s books, it was definitely well celebrated.
