Head canons and Backstory I gone and done

So I wanted to flesh out his backstory and try to make it a bit more…. Well. Coherent. I do have so many headcanons so i figured I’d just write the basics.

for now.

He was born and raised in Gridania, the eldest of three. His mother was a skilled alchemist and taught him how to make pomanders. It’s something he still does to this day.

At the start of the lancer questline, he’s around 24. He joined the guild at 19 and was there for about 3 years before he was betrayed and jailed. He got about 18 moons (months) for it, and it wasn’t entirely pleasant. He does not want to go back. He avoids Adders as much as he possibly can but he’s not afraid he swears.

He was recently out of gaol when the WOL turns up. He had several months to ‘temper his courage’ before storming the lancer’s guild.

That all went down as canon. He wants the WOL to pledge themselves to him so he can tell them everything, but he can’t trust them yet. The events leading to his arrest, unfortunately, have left him with massive trust issues verging on paranoia. He is absolutely convinced (and he was right, judging from what Ywain said) that Ywain is trying to kill him, more than likely as a cover up.

The effects you see in the final duty are all from pomanders he keeps on his person.

The fall happens and he is found and nursed back to health by a passer-by. (This changes depending on the universe). He is left with chronic pain and a phobia of heights, but he still wants to fight and train.

From here, he feigns his death. It’s the only way he thinks they’ll stop pursuing him. He remains in the South Shroud as a sellsword, and joins the Redbelly Wasps although he keeps his distance. He thinks they’re idiots for the most part, but it’s a living and a roof over his head.

He has a chocobo he called Courage. He absolutely dotes on her. She’s incredibly wary of people for the most part.

I was actually really disappointed when Estinien turned up in the post-ARR quests after finishing the Dragoon quests. I thought the story, as it was presented originally, was a tragic allegory to the Lancer questline.

While the situation was wholly different, both Estinien and Foulques were struggling long before you met them and fell to madness only after you seemed to give them a glimmer of hope that could be taken away.

I thought the story was so good if you think of the Dragoon quests as a continuation of the Lancer quests. I wanted so badly to save Foulques. We may have truly been his only friend (even if it's in a... Zenos kind of way). He wanted to be our mentor, to prove his own worth, to be right, to be validated. His death was tragic because it left you thinking, "if only Ywain had apologized or been more sympathetic. Maybe we could have saved Foulques." You couldn't save him alone.

And with that in mind is how I approached this scene when I first played it. I thought it was equally tragic. You gave Estinien hope that the two of you would kill Nidhogg and avenge his family and village. Set things right, finally. And then to find out the man that took him in and trained him was (in his mind) partially at fault for Ferndale. Just broke him. And you defended him. Thinking that we killed him, way up there, overlooking a long drop JUST like with Foulques felt so poetic. It was a great story. You couldn't save Foulques alone. But you also couldn't save Estinien even WITH help. It was such a dark tone from a lot of the game. The feeling that sometimes, no matter what you do, you can't save everyone.

That's why I thought it was brilliant. Well until he showed up with Aymeric and my little "oh this is an amazing story, so tragic" was just casually swept under the rug.
