very basic explanation: Shuya, the youngest child, was killed during a mission Sanemi was leading & Kyogo was very disrespectful and dismissive about it bc he doesnt see them as anything other than fodder. Sanemi, overcome with the grief of his latest sibling's death and the years of abuse, lost his shit and lunged at him with intent to kill.

His arm went through Kyogo's chest and together they went through the window, Kyogo briefly fought back and Sanemi used a wind jutsu to utterly shred the inside of his chest cavity. He sits back and processes what just happened and realizes that the pain and grief hasn't gone away.

Shizu finally gets to him- Genya close behind though I didn't show it -and he breaks down over the fact he just killed so brutally so easily. He's become a monster just like Kyogo shaped him to be. Shizu calls for some water & washes the blood off, then gets the bone fragments out and heals him.

     It isn’t any secret that Genya, his siblings, and his mother were abused by his alcoholic father. Kyogo is deeply hated by the family, especially by Genya and Sanemi, but he often disappeared for days or weeks on binges to spend almost every cent they had.

     The time when Kyogo was gone gave the family time to care for itself as a unit, for wounds to be patched (certainly on their mother, who always tried to protect her children from that man), meals to be made and money to be found. Genya had to grow up much too quickly in order to be able to provide for his brothers and sisters, but he never once complained.

     His mother’s smile and his big brother’s encouragement was all he needed to keep going, no matter how hard or laborious the work was. Genya often had to help their mother cook, clean and take care of the siblings even after coming home with Sanemi after a day of odd jobs and farm work in the village.

     Because of all this Genya is actually incredible with kids, can cook decently well, and tends not to complain when he’s made to work hard as long as he has someone to back him up. On the flip side, the smell of alcohol sends his stomach into cartwheels and he will step in when he sees violence against women. (He apologizes to Kanata for pulling her hair during the Final Selection, and immensely regrets allowing his anger to get the better of him like their father.)

Sanemi & Giyuu were about 16-17 when they both individually went on an undercover mission in the Kaze no Kuni capital city, they henged/disguised as fake personas Kazura (vaguely derived from kaze, wind) and Nakuu ('to lose')

Kazura is supposed to be darker skinned + two-toned eyes like that of Kazan no Kuni descendants & is sensible and confident but lazy, Nakuu has a hairstyle + facial shape from Mizu no Kuni & an outgoing enthusiastic and pretty sly personality

Giyuu put some particular effort into his disguise and really got into the character he was playing up, he also had fun with it where he could- and thats how he met Kazura. i dont have or really want specifics of why where how or such bc it ruins the imaginative bit of it ig? but while they were on the mission they were meeting up, they both knew the other was disguised but neither pried about it. they fell in love a bit, however it means, but as Nakuu's namesake they were never going to last. it was a mission and when it was done they would leave for home and never meet again.

but then they did :)

at 19 sanemi and giyuu had a political marriage arranged(forced) by Kyogo being a greedy fuck and wanting more trade from the Tomioka, in both the Happy & Broken marriage paths giyuu's the one who notices sanemi acting the same way as kazura in some ways and realizes the two are one in the same. In the Happy marriage its a thought that brings a smile to his face and a jest about how they fell in love twice, in the Broken marriage its only twice the heartbreak after the apathy sanemi regards him with and the loneliness that consumes him

CL Meta, S2E9: A World Without Circles

So I just rewatched s2e9 bc i was trying to figure out what the hell the Moonlight Musik actually does, and holy hell the character interactions in that episode are So Good I felt the need to type words about them. The writeup will be mostly centered around Beet, tho, because, well, you know.

First we got Choppin’, the insecure shut-in who’s probably more aware than any of the Classicaloids about their legacy, because he’s so insecure (nice consistency! logical! i love it!!), discovering that people think he ripped off one of his Musiks, one of his essential parts of himself, from another Classicaloid, who he Does Not Like and Never Liked That Much in the past (as compared to literally every other Classicaloid who came after Beet lmao). And fortunately, no one in the mansion knows about it, and Beet seems to have forgotten about this piece, so it might be Ok? People online might shit talk, but no one he interacts with in real life is gonna think he’s a rip-off/fraud?

And then. Beet starts being weird about circles, and Chopin picks up on what Beet was trying to remember within, like, 5 seconds, when it takes Beet himself a day and a half and a Deus ex Mom to figure it out (although tbf, the “moonlight” sonata wasn’t “inspired by moonlight,” that was a music reviewer’s invention and the title stuck). Has Chopin been watching out this entire damn time?

And then there’s Beet’s point of view here - imagine how goddamn frustrating it would be to look down at your breakfast one day and be like ...do i remember something from my past life? what the fuck?? is up with circles??? No one around me will shut up for one damn second while i try to remember through a haze of memories to something that may or may not have happened in my past life? And now someone has stolen my goddamn breakfast?????

And then Chopin, in good ol’ panic mode, steals everyone’s stuff (sidenote I love how Liszt knows she can get him out of his room with his favorite food) and rains on first everyone, and then when he appropriately gets yelled at, just on Beet. What a good exchange for all involved.

Liszt: if u got shit with Beet have it out with him, don’t rain on us Chopin: ... *rains on Beet* Beet: Why Are You Doing This Chopin: ... Beet: Ok You Can’t Stop Me From Circles

And, contrary to stereotype, Beet isn’t really that angry at Chopin!

Look at him this is just a 3 or so on the Beet Anger Scale. He’s more frustrated and determined to get to the bottom of this. It’s sort of the positive side of him not caring about people - even if you’re directly attempting to prevent Beet from reaching his goal, he’s not necessarily going to be angry at you, just determined to overcome the obstacles you put in his way. I mean, he’ll be irritated - he’s annoyed the scene before the Musik and when Mozart suggests forgiving Chopin and making peace he finds it ridiculous - but both times he shrugs off the irritation in pursuit of what he’s trying to figure out. Unstoppable force indeed.

Sidenote: Chopin’s music might be mostly triggered by fear, but he can control it really well (refining the target area, keeping it up for an entire damn night). 

ANYWAY SCHUBERT. One of the best parts of s2 were Classicaloids acknowledging each other’s Musik! and Schu is So Good here!! this ep almost singlehandedly makes me want to believe in schupin. Even when he doesn’t know that Chopin’s fear is basically exactly what Schu himself struggles with, he tries to help and honestly almost hits the nail on the head, it’s just that Chopin’s probably not thinking too clearly at this point seeing as he’s stayed up ~36 hours stealing stuff and Musiking.

And after Deus ex Mom triggers the climax, oh man what a resolution. Chopin’s voice actor pulls off a great performance of sincere panic and fear. And Chopin pretends he don’t care about the other ‘loids BUT HE DO !!!

Anyway Beet’s entire speech is 1. bangin’, because on a meta level it sort of works as an explanation of what Musik is? I mean, we learned that the entire damn reason the Classicaloids are, uh, themselves is Kyogo played them music pieces, which somehow imbued them with the composer’s soul and also Musik powers - so some of their souls *magically* transmuted themselves into the music itself, makes sense. 2. It shows Beet’s really pretty egalitarian theory of music in general, and 3. Beet’s music itself is a great example, from his general use of mastering and then bending sonata form and later tonality itself to greater express content, and also more specific examples of him using inspiration from another piece (Mozart 40!) to create one of his own (the Fifth!)! TL;DR I want to print this speech out and staple it to the forehead of everyone who shit talks sonata form!!!

i’m basing this headcanon off two quotes from episode 12 because i literally fUCKING SAW THEM AND WAS LIKE OH MY GOD WHAT IF THESE QUOTES WERE SAID LITERALLY INSTEAD OF FIGURATIVELY LIKE I THOUGHT THEY WERE.

first bach says, “Music is a manifestation of the passions deep in the heart. In fact, you could say it is the soul itself.”

and when beethoven fights bach, he refers to his mujik as “True music--true expression of the soul--Musik made from the whole of who I am.”

and now i can’t unsee it and so here’s what i wrote.

the soul is the source of creativity and the conduit of mujik users’ supernatural power; in other words, mujik comes from the soul. the mujik dimension, a blank slate reservoir of unlimited power, is shaped entirely by the souls that act upon it, so it can also be accurately referred to as the soulscape. when classicaloids access the soulscape, they are traveling outward and traveling inward at the same time--it is a place where the self and the externals are inherently connected. and as i (probably) said before, the soulscape’s infinite magical energy is fueled by the infinite creativity of human souls. why creativity? and why are arts such a good channel for the soulscape? caring about creation and caring about creation’s meaning are what makes our souls human rather than animal, and so the powers connected to what make us most human are the most powerful of all. 

this would explain not only why the classicaloids seem to have superhuman strength (since the soulscape’s unlimited energy is channeled through them) but also why liszt was spontaneously able to carve the merleopon and penis statues. because the soulscape is not just a place for music users--it is for any act that is creative, and sculpting is a creative act. therefore, liszt can spontaneously gain a talent for sculpting from the mujik dimension/soulscape.

in addition, so long as one is inspired, one can always rely on it as a place from which to draw strength. the classicaloids could 10000% make new compositions and channel their powers through those, since everything is connected to the same force of human desire to invent. 

oh yeah and did i mention this also factors into the classicaloids’ creation? as my friend @oktova and i were discussing, the literal souls of the composers were probably “streamed” into their artificial bodies through music. which means when one has a strong enough creative impact on creative forces in the world, one’s soul can be “stored” there by sheer artistic influence, and then retrieved. which would mean, by extension, that even if you somehow managed to kill a superhumanly strong classicaloid body, they will never actually die because their influence on creativity is far too strong. as long as someone is willing and able to provide a new body for them, they will live again. and as long they can influence the art world by six degrees of artistic separation (and by that i mean their influence as composers), their souls will never fade from the soulscape. their genius literally makes them unkillable.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE.

music would probably be the most effective channel of the soulscape, because 1) music was associated with heavenly spheres by the ancient greeks and by j.s. bach & others in his time, more than any other art form. as we all know, heaven >>>>>>> everything. and 2) as franz liszt said, music is the universal language and expresses what words and even other art forms cannot. in fact, he and his art son wagner both sought in their own ways to bring together music with other arts, wagner going further than liszt’s symphonic poems by pursuing “total art” and doing Literally Every Single Fucking Thing(TM) for all of his music dramas. now, one could debate forever whether this opinion about music is actually true, because it is after all a subjective opinion. but because of my personal beliefs, i will side with liszt and wagner and make this the official headcanon:

music is the most powerful channel of the soulscape because it is the universal language, as well as the most basic unifier of magic and the soul.

plus, have a nifty little extension headcanon: any skill can be spontaneously learned through the soulscape, but creative skills are the most common.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S STILL MORE.

this means theoretically a stage 3 mujik user could LITERALLY CONTROL SOMEONE’S SOUL THROUGH MUJIK. THEY COULD TRAP SOMEONE ELSE’S SOUL IN THEIR OWN THROUGH MUJIK. THEY COULD MANIPULATE MULTIPLE PEOPLES’ SOULS THROUGH MUJIK AND EVEN THE ENTIRE COURSE OF HISTORY by making that strong an imprint on others’ souls the musical dimension. in fact, given the soul-origin nature of music and mujik, a stage 3 mujik user’s control of others would most likely go DIRECTLY to the soul unless the user directed it elsewhere.

tl;dr these shitfucks are INCREDIBLY OP. no wonder kyogo doesn’t want to take responsibility for them lmao.

this is what i mean by 'the clan au doesnt have a set story'. theres all these places that it can branch off of and the possibilities r endless and i have *counting* ..14 scenarios/storylines so far and every time i think of a new scenerio another gets added<3

i havent done much with the kny-canon leaning ones they're more just like if i did follow canon thats how it'd be done ykno? im thinking they get raided by the shinazugawas for control of the trade routes and either they both survive like that one post or only giyu survives, either way Sakonji takes in the living tomioka(s)

most of the stories arent tied down to canon theyre more whatever worldbuilding i have and stories pop up from them- one of the first ones was the shina-tomi failed peacetalks bc i wanted to draw sanemi & giyuu fighting (i just realized i placed the branches perfectly bc thats closer to canon than the others lol)

if the peacetalks worked(wouldve been later/after sanemi took over) then it kinda snowballed into a few nearby/allied clans forming a village, then from that theres the Tomi-Daki diplomat/trade envoy w the fox trio(giyu makomo & sabito)

the rescues are like. little to no formal interactions between any of the three clans(shina-kumeno is always allied), in the first one its winter and giyu's on his way home when he catches the trail of bloodline hunters and saves Genya & Masachika.

in the other one giyu's pinned by a rogue shinobi and sanemi & sabito both find him at the same time and they make a lil truce bc giyu has severe chakra exhastion and cant make it home

undercover mission has one thats purely sanegiyu; sanemi is disguised as Kazura & giyu as Gikuro and actually i looked back at my notes and this ones like. in the past before the village branch. so it connects to that one but it can also be a standalone. the other undercover mission is sabisanegiyu where sabito & giyuu went undercover as a master/servant thing and sanemi was disgusted by it and didnt know that it wasnt Real so he tried to 'save' giyuu and got invited to the polycule<3

the lil unnamed branches inbetween is that one where giyu got chased out the clan by tsutako for killing their mom, there was a spy who had taken her place and giyu noticed and killed the spy but tsutako only saw him killing their mom and she lost her shit in dispair & heartbreak. theres a branch for Giyu staying alone, Sabito ditching the urokodakis for his packmate while makomo stays behind to fix things with tsutako, and both Sabito & Makomo ditching the urokodakis for their packmate

the arranged marriages are sanegiyu with the first branch being after sanemi takes over and giyu asking for it ot of goodwill & he likes him(his pack gets to stay w him). other two Kyogo requested(demanded) it for trade routes, he doesnt allow the urokodakis to go with bc theyre Not Tomiokas and these routes more heavily portray the different biology of the southerners/mountain-pass(a/b/o)

ones angsty bc sanemi is like. CRUSHED that he cant find love on his own. his father takes literally everything away from him. while sanemi is kind & respects giyu he doesnt really care for him. and for giyu to go from a very close-knit family-oriented culture to the stone cold-cutthroat/conservative/severely traumatized/individualist culture of the shinazigawas with literally No One there for him he gets pretty fucked up w the emotional neglect

the other ones less angsty bc sanemi actually Tries in their relationship and finds that he actually enjoys giyu's company- and cuddles. the cuddles r fuckin great. but kyogo's still a cunt and a massive hindrance to emotional and mental healing of everyone around him. but sanemi's not alone now so its Better

I NEARLY FAINTED WHEN BACH SAID THE GIRLS WERE GETTING A NEW PRODUCER BECAUSE THAT’S LITERALLY THE SAME PREMISE AS THIS MULTI-CHAPTER STORY I’VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR CLASSICALOID. Kanae’s mom is being written sympathetically, like Kyogo, except her Mom dumps her responsibility on to Kanae and doesn’t even try to help her, like Kyogo, and leaves her daughter alone for months on end and doesn’t even try to contact her, like Kyogo!

And her mother is #theworst, LIKE KYOGO!

I will continue feeling bad for this teenage girl who really didn’t deserve to have these terrible, awful parents! <3
