Summary: When a Witcher finds Jaskier trying to feed behind the tavern, he thought it was over, finally. His secret was out. But the Witcher surprises him and proposes something completely different, bringing him home to Kaer Morhen instead.

Turns out, some of the Witcher mutations leave them in a tight spot of their own. Vesemir proposes to help Jaskier learn about himself so he won't become a danger to others if he helps them through the winter season.

It really works out better than planned.

Geralt/Jaskier/Eskel

Emotional hurt/comfort, self-hatred, self-esteem issues, angst with a happy ending. Geralt runs himself into the ground trying to pick up the pieces of his family, sad and self deprecating at first but the fluff does get there... at the end, as well as the smut.

Ch 1. Golden Repair and Other Arts

Geralt headed down to the hall to eat supper, it'd been about a week since Eskel nearly died in their home. The second Eskel was strong enough he had shut himself away. Geralt knew why, knew he felt like a monster, like he was too dangerous to be around. As witchers they had been trained to follow by logic, knowledge, facts alone. With the little they knew about Leshens there was no point in trying to comfort Eskel, it’d be based on feelings; trying to comfort him while also being unsure of the future themselves.

Vesemir had been frustrated through the healing process, usually when a Leshen takes over a human the original body dies before the transformation finalizes. There are no texts of a witcher that had been turned before, so there was no way to know if Eskel was still in there during the fight, no way to know if they were hurting him. If Vesemir lost another, if he wasn’t able to save Eskel, he’d blame himself. As would the rest of them.

Ciri was just as terrified of herself now as she was of the world. Her power held so tightly she was having trouble doing even the simple things that Yennefer was teaching her. Thankfully, what she had already learned hadn’t been affected much, though it did take her longer to do them. Ciri always had trouble with the texts. Vesimir, Geralt, and Jaskier (to a lesser extent) had had issues getting her to focus before Voleth Meir. Now it seemed the only lessons she cared for were Jaskier's writing lessons, writings which she only let Jaskier read. He’d not pushed her nor went behind her back to read them. He doubted Jaskier would tell him either, besides he’d not seen enough of Jaskier to ask about them anyway.

Jaskier had sequestered himself in a room far from Geralt’s from day one. And he definitely succeeded in whatever it was he was doing as Geralt found it hard to find Jaskier. Geralt could circle the keep three times over and not even catch a whiff of Jaskier’s familiar scent. He also hadn’t been eating much. Geralt had taken a while to notice, but he realised that Jaskier never grabbed a full plate of food, even that abysmal amount he wouldn’t finish. He’d give it to the goats Eskel kept. He’d also wear every layer he seemed to own yet never smelled of firewood and he’d barely spoken a word to anyone outside of Ciri’s lessons, let alone sing.

Yennefer seemed the most adjusted out of everyone. She was the only one who gained anything from the turmoil, after all. Her chaos was mostly back, occasionally it would crackle and leak, only to have something burst into flames then fizzle out or some bit of food turn to ash only for someone to later find something transformed or floating in place. She seemed frustrated by it, but Geralt could tell she was holding it together for Ciri’s sake.

Lambert’s intact sanity and lack of literal explosives were purely due to Aiden, a friend he brought up to the Keep the past few years. The cat witcher seemed an odd mixture of a calming force and an instigator for Lambert. This didn’t stop Geralt from keeping an eye on Lambert. Geralt had seen first-hand what almost losing Aiden had done to him, he doubted Lambert was dealing with nearly losing Eskel, nearly killing him, any different.

Once sat at an empty table Geralt had thought this through many times and had thought he had no way to fix anything. He’d be forced by destiny to watch the ones he cared for destroy themselves. Sitting by as he saw the cracks in the pot get worse.

Or.

Fuck destiny. He can’t make them a new pot or erase the cracks that are already there, but he can keep the cracks from getting worse. Geralt grabbed an empty piece of parchment left on the table from Ciri’s lessons and began to write.
